5 Centimeters Per Second (movie) Masterpiece To be honest, I get the characters/plots of this movie, "The Place Promised in Our Early Days", and "Voices of a Distant Star" mixed up all of the time, but i gave them all 10s anyway, so who cares! Seriously though, you should see them all if you liked any of them. What can I say? I'm a sucker for these types of movies.
Afro Samurai (TV)
Afro Samurai: Resurrection (movie)
Aim for the Ace! (movie)
Air (TV) *finishes last episode* What!? WHAT!?!?!? WHAT THE FUCK?!?!? Fuck this show and its stupid characters. *goes to watch Air in Summer* ----- If you're gonna watch ONE show like this (ex: -ef- a tale of memories, Clannad, or Kanon) I would recommend you skip it, but if you're in to shows like Air, at least watch the first episode.
Air Gear (TV) Very good Even though the series ends in a "ok guys, you don't get to see what happens next if you don't read the manga sukz0rz hahahah!!12!@oneone1" style, it's still a great anime. (great, oh great!, get it? I crack my self up) Warning: this series might make you stupider. You have been warned. ----- Watch if you like: -"Ima beat you up for no reason!" "no, im gonna beat YOU up for no reason!" -crappy plots that are compensated for with boobies -series that make you read the manga if you want to get the "real" story
Air In Summer (special) wtf. If you're going to go through the trouble of adding two more episodes to a series already lacking an ending, AT LEAST MAKE SOMETHING CONCLUSIVE. Completely pointless story-wise, but it included my favorite character group (Kanna, Uraha, that one guy... you know who I'm talking about, right?), so not utterly awful.
Air Master (TV) Good Most annoying creature known to man: Renge. Maki has the worst friends I have ever seen in any anime. The fights are cool though.
Akira (movie)
Amagami SS (TV) yep, the first episode definitely qualifies this show for my "fuck you, Japan" category. But I'm a terrible person and watched the whole thing.
Angel Beats! (TV) Nowhere near as terrible as one would expect from reading the synopsis and looking at the character designs. TK is definitely one of my favorite characters in anime in terms of comedy, only slightly edged out by Isaac and Miria from Baccano. Having watched this along side Durarara!! I would actually prefer this show in hindsight; despite Angel Beats' tendency to be completely ridiculous on almost every level, it is better than Durarara's lack of stuff actually happening. At first I felt that the "serious" moments would be unbelievable due to being interjected between a bunch of high school kids shooting guns at some super powered sword-arm angel and traversing an underground passage full of Indiana Jones-esque traps to a giant weapons factory run completely by punk kids, but the scenes that were supposed to be emotional actually were. There was very little in the way of "hey look! we totally subverted this thing you thought was coming, isn't that funny?" bullshit that is too often used in modern anime. While it was there in VERY FEW cases, it was nothing that made me go, "fuck this show and it's stupid characters" as I so often have felt watching other anime.
Angel's Egg (movie)
(The) Animatrix (OAV)
Another (TV) so fucking terrible. well, at least it has a certain comedic value.
Appleseed (movie) Good I saw the English dub on TV, and it was a giant steaming pile of meh. you can't really tell what the **** everyone is talking about until the end. Overall, average story with rather shallow characters, but look at it this way, I've heard the sequel (Ex Machina) is better! Update: it is. ----- Watch if you like: -alternate timeline futures in which humans are slaves to thier robot overlords (well, sort of...) -rather spectacular CGI sequences -the movie "Wild Wild West" (you'll see what I mean)
Appleseed: Ex Machina (movie) Very good The plot elements of this one feel sort of ripped off of the first movie, but who cares? It's better, yay!
Arakawa Under the Bridge (TV)
Asura (movie)
Baby Blue (movie)
Baccano! (TV) Masterpiece Miria and Isaac are my two favorite characters of all time. This is also the best anime ever (along with Speed Grapher, Ergo Proxy, and Gurren Lagann).
Bakemonogatari (TV) A cat is fine too.
Basilisk (TV) Pretty heavy-handed in most of the dramatic scenes, but enjoyable nonetheless. Not that you'd be watching Basilisk for the drama, as the "ninpou battles" are the main draw. [SPOILERS]At first I thought the ending was really stupid, but the more I thought about it the more it made sense. Sorta necessitates the viewer being spiritualistic to some extent, which isn't really my thing. "Ok, I guess their spirits get reunited somewhere down the line and blah blah blah it all pans out in the end," or something. [END OF SPOILERS]
(The) Beast Player Erin (TV) This is the only anime to be good in a long time. Beast Player Erin has an ACTUAL PLOT with REAL CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!! Astounding indeed, in this day and age. Not only that, but it ISN'T TERRIBLE!! Q: "how i good animu?" A: "YOU DON'T FUCKING MAKE YOUR SHOW ABOUT SCHOOLGIRLS OR TITS!!" The fact that Beast Player Erin even exists is an astounding leap forward for the anime industry and the sexually-repressed nation of Japan in general. Fuck everything else that has come out in the past decade. That's right, fuck you, Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Durarara!!, Full Metal Alchemist, Code Geass, and Death Note. If you wonder where your fucking moe bullshit -- K-on!, Clannad, Kannon, and so forth -- is, go kill yourself now before I hunt you down and do it myself. As is evidenced by this list, I pretty much hate everything. As of writing, Beast Player Erin is the only exemption from my loathing. Had I known it was 50 episodes from the beginning, there was no chance in hell I would have watched it all. But knowing now where the show goes, the length of it is no reason to not watch it. It isn't perfect. But everything else is terrible, so deal with it.
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (TV) Excellent Definitely one of the top 50 "startup-indie-bands-in-japan-trying-to-make-it-big" anime I've seen. ----- But in all honesty, its pretty damn good. A lot of the elements are fairly generic, but the basic premise is rather unique. The animation can sort of trail off in the non-musical sections, but most of the art is great when the beats start playing. [SPOILERS] The ending was so-so. I wish they'd have done it differently, but it was still pretty solid (I like to think that Koyuki and Maho got married and now live in a giant mansion after a BECK world tour, but that's just me). [END SPOILERS]
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I - The Egg of the King (movie)
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc II - The Battle for Doldrey (movie)
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III - The Advent (movie)
Beyond (OAV)
Birdy the Mighty (OAV)
Black Lagoon (TV) Excellent Honestly I can't remember too much about the actual things that took place during the series, which is mostly because it is rather episodic, which makes me forget anything specific after awhile. It is similar to GITS:SAC and Darker Than Black in that sense, where you can't really remember what happened, but you know the characters quite well and if someone says "hey, remember the time when Revi and Rokuro did such-and-such?", you'll be like "oh yeah, i remember that episode! they also..." ----- Watch if you like: -Guns shooting guns that explode into guns which shoot guns. -explosions and general bad-assery (with arguably the most badass characters in anime) -good overall story where there isn't any convoluted logic
Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage (TV) Excellent (see my "Black Lagoon (TV)" comment for more info) Same as the first season, but with fresh stories (well, new for Black Lagoon at least). Depends on if you liked the first season. 'nuf said.
Black Rock Shooter (OAV) SYMBOLISM!!! ----- Well. I guess it looks pretty dec... maybe... . There definitely needs to be more black rock shooting and less melodrama. I'm not really up on the Black Rock "lore", if there is any at all, but what the hell are these high school kids doing in what is ostensibly a show about fighting? It's mostly my fault for not knowing what the show is about, so I'll concede that the OAV was not as bad as I'd thought it'd be. And the ending = Dawwwww.
Bleach (TV) Excellent
Bleach the Movie: Fade to Black (movie 3) laughably terrible.
Bleach the Movie: Memories of Nobody Excellent
Bleach: The DiamondDust Rebellion (movie 2)
Blood+ (TV) Excellent
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan (TV)
Blue Exorcist (TV) Yeah, the first episode was kinda terrible, but the second episode was pretty cool. This series could be ball-bustingly awesome, but I feel that hope is merely that of Bleach syndrome, i.e., there is one really cool moment followed by endless crap I don't care about but I keep reading/watching because I continually reminisce about how cool that one moment was.
Blue Submarine No.6 (OAV) Kinda ok. Wished the fish lady and the main guy woulda boned down. Don't actually remember if it ever happened. CG looks like ass though.
Bobby's Girl (movie)
Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan Second (OAV)
Broken Blade (movie series) HNNGGGG!!! <--- my boner for this show ----- Break Blade shaped up to be pretty cool after all. I mean, there's some modern-anime trope bs, but it is almost exclusively in the earlier movies. More than anything that this show has that other modern anime lack is atmosphere. Scenes in the throne room feel important. Battles have weight to them. Furthermore, character interactions ACTUALLY INVOLVE INTERACTING. Whoever writes the dialogue is not retarded, an element which is painfully hard to come by these days. The fights are cool, the plot is solid, and there are novel aspects to the Break Blade world that keep it entertaining. It's sad to see this anime ending after only 6 episodes while the manga continues. While there is always the possibility of more movies, the production quality is so high in Break Blade that I'm not sure the series was profitable enough for Production I.G. or Bandai to justify another series. Of course there needs to be an adequate amount of source material, but I am not particularly keen on reading the manga and would not know how far along it is. My main question is, how the fuck has this not been licensed? Either the foreign publishing rights are exorbitantly expensive/not even on the table, or American publishers don't think an action-drama with giant robots can make money, which is a frightening prospect in multiple regards.
Cannon Fodder (movie)
Casshern Sins (TV) This show is pretty interesting, but only when granted a rather large number of concessions. Firstly, the show should not be interpreted literally; it is a generic action adventure anime when taken at face value, and the explicit plot has unforgivably large plot holes. Secondly, the characters, as suggested by the first concession, are not rational actors but merely conduits for the show's philosophizing. And Finally, Sins repeats itself numerous times, both story-wise and in terms of deeper context, so be prepared for slow progression on all fronts. With these guidelines for what I would consider an "enjoyable" viewing of Casshern Sins in mind, the show's (unfortunately expected) xenophobia, archaic notion of gender roles, and (some may argue) blatant racism affront the viewer in otherwise tolerable scenes of navel-gazing, putting into stark relief the craftsmanship that went into producing this show's extended metaphor of a plot.
Cencoroll (movie)
A Certain Magical Index (TV) Dude, friggin' magical assassins from the british church and misapplication of legitimate scientific theories!!!.... wait, what? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. And Touma has the most retard strength since Shirou from Fate/Stay Night, perhaps even surpassing him in the "people die when they are killed" category.
A Certain Magical Index II (TV)
Chihayafuru (TV) "The heart of the cards, Yugi. The heart of the cards."
Chihayafuru 2 (TV)
Children Who Chase Lost Voices (movie)
Chobits (TV) Very good The ending was awful. Just Horrible. Other than that, the series is very good if you like the genre I guess... If you somehow are able to never watch the ending. ----- Oh yeah, and see my "Welcome to the NHK! (TV)" comment on people who piss me off.
Cipher (OAV)
Claymore (TV) Excellent
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) Masterpiece Kicks the 2nd season's ass.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV) Excellent Every character is an asshole... most of the time. The animation quality practically falls off a cliff midseason, but picks up by the end, and apparently the DVDs will redraw a bunch of scenes so you're better off buying those. ----- ending = meh [MEGASPOILER] Lelouch isn't dead. If you say he is, fuck you, you're wrong. [END SPOILER]
Colorful (movie)
Comedy (OAV) Yay.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Masterpiece
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Hells yeah.
Daicon films (special)
Darker than Black (TV) Excellent
Darker than Black - Kuro no Keiyakusha: Gaiden (OAV)
Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor (TV) ... wat? [SPOILERS] yay, Hei X Yin baby ftw! [END SPOILERS]
Dead Leaves (OAV) Masterpiece
Deadman Wonderland (TV) Didn't get into the manga, but the anime of Deadman Wonderland gets better each week. So good. So terrible. I sort of want to read the manga now, but I don't want to lose the superb production values of the anime in spite of the occasional censoring in the aired version. This show is full of shitty people doing shitty things, but I can't help but continue watching. The numerous mysteries coupled with the depth of character interactions make Deadman Wonderland a compelling show.
Death Billiards (movie)
Death Note (TV) Masterpiece
Deathtic 4 (movie)
Denpa teki na Kanojo (OAV) Yeah, another shitty "horror" and "suspense" anime. The only thing I found horrifying about this show was the stupidity of the main characters. For example, they are tracking down a serial killer or something and go to the perpetrator's house, and the perpetrator is all like, "yeah, I did it. what'cha gonna do about it? You have no proof! I left no evidence behind, especially not that cellphone that has my prints all over it that I used to set off a FUCKING BOMB IN A FUCKING HIGH SCHOOL. And I'll never admit to doing it, like what I'm doing right now. There's no way that any of this is being secretly recorded." And the protagonists are like, "well, (s)he's got us there." That's pretty much the whole show. Also, all of the characters are so inhumanly incoherent that I fast-forwarded through the whole thing (x4) because seriously, don't fucking waste your time. @ last scene in ep2: epic lulz were had.
A Detective Story (OAV)
Detroit Metal City (OAV)
Dimension Bomb (movie) what is this I don't even --
(The) Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya (movie)
Doorbell (movie)
Dragon Half (OAV)
Durarara!! (TV) "Onii-san, hisashiburi!" ----- Not that good. Compared to Baccano, that is.
Eden of the East (TV) Sorta lacking on the story side of things (fairly obvious plot holes), but had nice visuals for the most part. Though, the ending = lolwut? Definitely could have done better with more episodes (only 11), probably leaving room for the two(!) movies that are out soon.
Eden of the East: Paradise Lost (movie) Way to go, you made the ending (even) worse than that of the TV series.
Eden of the East: The King of Eden (movie)
ef: a tale of melodies (TV) Excellent Yep. That's ef all right. Same thing again. ----- *watching ef - tale of melodies* "OMG!!... wait, didn't this already happen?" "no dude, that was last season."
ef: a tale of memories (TV) Masterpiece *moe-gasm*
Elfen Lied (TV) Excellent
Ergo Proxy (TV) Masterpiece Good god this is brilliant.
Eureka Seven (TV) Masterpiece In my top 5 favorite anime, don't feel like doing full comment. Go Watch. Now.
Fate/stay night (TV) Good "Heh, You lost me."
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) Masterpiece Favorite video game of all time continued in movie-form? How dare you, sir, accuse me of being a fanboy!
(The) Final Flight of the Osiris (OAV)
First Squad - The Moment Of Truth (OAV) Metro 2033... ...god I loved that game. Best game since Oblivion. Need a kick-ass computer to appreciate it. The only reason I bring it up is the common thread of Russia. This show sucks tho.
Five Numbers! (OAV)
FLCL (OAV) Should get around to rewatching one of these days...
Flowers of Evil (TV)
Fractale (TV) cliche as fuck, but there's nothing else remotely watchable this season. and of course, being the kind of show that it is, Fractale's end is insane bullshit.
Freedom (OAV) Looks beautiful in BluRay... other than that the anime was pretty so-so, not particularly notable.
Ga-Rei-Zero (TV) The first few episodes are deceiving. It's actually boring as hell. It isn't THAT boring of a final episode, but for the love of god do not watch this anime.
Gala (movie) Probably my least favorite of Genius Party Beyond. Traditional art direction with generic characterizations and symbolism doesn't really cut it when compared to the rest of the collection.
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV) Excellent
(The) Garden of Sinners (movie series) Cool show. Exceedingly complex in its narrative, but cool nonetheless. SPOILERS Yeah, so... how about that epilogue. Given the indefinite nature of reality in this show, you might as well interpret the final scene to mean Shiki, in all her forms, was merely a figment of Kokuto's imagination. Fukkin' Freesia, an' shit. But I can't imagine this show is pulling a Ciguratera on us. Whenever I cannot fully grasp the meaning of a show, particularly the ending, I, depending on whether the show was worth pondering not -- not necessarily the same thing as a show being good -- stay up for hours lying in bed, just thinking. What did that mean? What is the symbolism behind ______? or is it just bs? The final question is that of a last resort: once I realize I've lost dozens of hours of sleep over a single show, I forgo hard logic and tell myself that half of it is complete bs -- often it is -- and the rest just works out; of course I must conceive of a way for it to "work out" first. In the case of Kara no Kyoukai, I would say neutral-Shiki returns to dormancy, girl-Shiki comes back, and she and Kokuto have make crazy-hot love and live out their lives with little further conflict. There. Resolution. END OF SPOILERS
(The) Garden of Words (movie)
Genius Party (movie)
Genshiken (TV) Excellent
Genshiken 2 (TV) Excellent
Ghost Hound (TV) The psychological and philosophical elements make this anime far more engrossing than anything I've seen in the past year or two. Ghost Hound has a way of creating a deafeningly silent atmosphere, similar to that of Serial Experiments Lain; this can be a pro or con depending on who you are, but if you dislike Ghost Hound you are wrong. [SPOILERS] The ending is balls, in a bad way. [END OF SPOILERS]
Ghost in the Shell (movie) This movie put me off a bit in the beginning due to the aesthetics being so different from SAC, but that feeling quickly faded. I have to say I found the major to be much more interesting in this incarnation. The art style is quite different, but it still has the 3D vehicles/backgrounds seen in SAC.
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) That parade scene must've cost millions.
Ghost in the Shell: Arise (OAV)
Ghost in the Shell: Arise Alternative Architecture (TV)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Definitely watch this series when you get the chance. GITS is kick-ass when it comes to futuristic-yet-not-so-far-off tech, with cool concepts and ideas introduced all the time. I don't really read/watch much scifi stuff, so I can't say everything it does is original, but it sure as hell is awesome. The main characters are pretty interesting, to say the least. Story-wise, the show is broken up into two types: "Stand Alone" and "Complex" (I get it, it's also the name of the show!), stand alone being a "filler" episode (I use quotes because it's really more there to expand on the world and add character depth without detracting from the main story, not a naruto-style filler which has no purpose but to fill) and complex being part of an overarching plot. The only real problem I remember having with this series was that it started off slow, seemingly formulaic (conflict of the week + main characters = rather boring 23 or so minutes) until I realized that there actually WAS an overall plot, a damn good one at that. The final few episodes were, in understatement, fucking epic.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (TV) Just as kick-ass as the first season. In retrospect, it's pretty much the same goodness that Black Lagoon: Second Barrage was; new plot, same ol' awesome characters/world.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society (movie)
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) ... meh.
Grave of the Fireflies (movie)
Grenadier (TV) Weak Complete Faliure, will make you stupider in the process of watching. ----- Oh yeah, and see my "Welcome to the NHK! (TV)" comment on people who piss me off.
Gunslinger Girl (TV) Excellent Saw the English dub, and thought it was great (may seem like an odd premise at first, but I liked it). I thought it was so great that I was anticipating a season two, but when that finally came out I just didn't like it. Won't elaborate cause I'm lazy, see for yourself.
Gurren Lagann (TV) Masterpiece Holy fuck. The best thing I've ever seen.
Haibane Renmei (TV) Each episode also seems surprisingly short, in the sense that there is not a lot of content/character development per episode. All in all, it is not very memorable, but has likeable characters and a good, unconfusing ending. (Seems overrated, even though I hate to use that word)
Happy Machine (movie)
Haruka Nogizaka's Secret (TV) Serious anime is serious. Contrived plot is contrived. Yamato Nadeshiko character is Yamato Nadeshiko.
Heaven's Lost Property (TV) Best new series this decade. By best I mean worst.
High School of the Dead (TV) Fuck this show and its stupid fan service. ----- Somehow the characters are made worse in this adaptation than in the manga. The manga didn't exactly have the most enjoyable cast, but now they turn the "genius girl" into a fucking tsundere, the main guy into an emofag, the nurse into an EVEN WORSE bumbling idiot, and manage to ADD angst, which is perhaps the worst move imaginable if you don't want to piss me off. Anyway, this show sucks, but I continue to watch it due to lack of a single other decent show airing. You heard me, Occult Academy. It can be watchable... if you cut out the two-thirds that are just fan service. ----- Here are some choice moments in recent episodes: [ep 08] Here's a bunch of breast physics that don't even make any sense WHILE the characters spout one-liners shooting zombies. [ep 09] "I'm gonna grab your boob now, so... yeah." [pretty much all the episodes]: Look, a pantyshot! ... ... ... OF A FUCKING MUTILATED ZOMBIE.
Hotarubi no Mori e (movie) Pretty good. Y'know, it's whatever.
Initial D (TV) 90's CG animation is friggin' sweet. Pretty much your typical shounen fighting series, but the premise and characters were enough to keep me watching all of the way through. Initial D doesn't succumb to the faults that Akagi had, namely being boring as hell in the final episodes. Unfortunately I'll probably never watch 2nd Stage due to the repetitiveness of it all: the first season held out long enough for me to complete, but reading the plot summaries of all of the sequels and spinoffs, pretty much nothing interesting happens relationship-wise or other, one of the few reasons I would've watched any further.
Initial D: Extra Stage (OAV)
Initial D: Fifth Stage (TV)
Initial D: Fourth Stage (TV)
Initial D: Second Stage (TV)
Initial D: Third Stage (movie)
Jin-Roh - The Wolf Brigade (movie) Masterpiece Oshii, you've done it again. To use cliche review terminology, it is a must see for any fan of Oshii's works. TECHNICALLY he didn't direct it, but I don't care.
K-ON! (TV) moe moe... *sigh*... forget it. I'm going to sleep.
Kaiba (TV) Kaiba is one hell of a show. As AWO said, it's not for everybody, but it certainly did the trick for me.
Katanagatari (TV) whatever.
Kemonozume (TV) Masterpiece QUALITY. Memes aside, I found the visual style to be rather appealing after watching awhile. The plot is pretty simple, but nonetheless remained interesting all of the way through. Kemonozume goes from out-of-the-ordinary to just plain weird for the sake of weird, nurturing my love for it even more. Anyone looking for a unique/fresh (that's not vague at all!) show should at least watch an episode or two of Kemonozume.
Kid's Story (OAV)
Kill la Kill (TV)
Kimi ni Todoke - From Me to You (TV) CONFLICT!
Kimi ni Todoke 2nd Season (TV) how i shot ambiguity?
King of Thorn (movie) Pretty ok.
Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World (movie)
Kino's Journey (TV) I'm looking forward to watching more of this show but am not in the mood to do so.
Kino's Travels: Life Goes On (movie)
Kizuna Ichigeki (movie)
Kurenai (TV) Murasaki is an interesting character with the major setback of being a young girl in a modern anime. This means the plot will inevitably go down the route of "lol underage sex" while constantly alluding to it as well. Maybe if they hadn't botched the ending almost as bad as Witch Hunter Robin I would have remembered how good the first two-thirds of the show was. But alas! I won't go into the ending because I hate to give a bad impression of a show that was pretty solid until the final bit. Every one of the recurring cast have genuinely unique personalities that give the show a great interplay between characters without having to delve into hard-to-parse metaphors that add superficial "depth" to dialogue. If there was more time to develop each character, I'm sure this show could've really shined. ----- WOO 100TH ANIME FINISHED!!!
Kurozuka (TV) Not that bad, but not very good either.
Last Exile (TV) Excellent
(The) Legend of Black Heaven (TV) Well, that show was pretty OK. [SPOILERS] What the hell, Tanaka. Could you possibly have picked a worse course of action than kissing Yuki RIGHT AFTER YOU WON YOUR WIFE'S TRUST BACK!? Jesus Christ. [END OF SPOILERS]
(The) Life of Budori Gusuko (movie 2012)
Limit Cycle (movie)
Lucky Star (TV) Excellent
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (movie) fantastic.
Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine (TV) Wow. For all the star power of this show, I was expecting to be let down, but so far so good it would seem.
Lupin the 3rd: Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid (special)
Macross 7 (TV) Having finished Macross 7, I can say it's one of the worst shows I've ever watched. ----- This is one of the stupidest shows I've seen in a long time. The idiot plot is more idiotic than SDF Macross, which I thought would be nigh impossible to surpass. Macross 7 is on par if not worse in terms of stupid, contrived story elements, unbelievable characters that are never developed who have motivations that don't make sense (if they have a motivation at all), and reused animation every episode. Almost all of the Macross Universe is left unexplained when there is an absurd amount that could be fleshed out. See my SDF Macross comments, as I feel Macross 7 has the same problems as its predecessor.
Macross 7 Encore (OAV)
Macross Frontier (TV) Despite my hating on this show in the spoilers below, Macross Frontier was definitely worth the watch. The rest of the Macross franchise is kinda terrible, so if you want to watch Macross this is the one to see. There are a number of callbacks to earlier series, but nothing worth the pain of watching the old shows. You should watch Macross Zero, as it is short and too the point, but for Macross 7 and SDF Macross, do yourself a favor and read the plot summaries if you care that much about the fiction. [SPOILERS] wooo! no resolution; that's exactly why I wanted to watch a 25 episode show. You know, I was really enjoying Frontier, even with its absurd amount of angsty bullshit. I thought, "hey, at least he'll clearly end up with Sheryl considering Ranka has the hots for her brother." But no. This is by far the best Macross iteration, as the only thing that wasn't complete and utter garbage besides Frontier was Macross Zero. But the ending, oh god the ending. Every Macross has incorporated the "omg, who does the main character actually love!? well you have to wait until the end to see!". But until now whoever is in charge of the Macross franchise has never had the gall to say "well, let's not even pick an ending! either way we'd piss off a ton of fans!" Not that I know their reasoning, but there is nothing worse than this kind of open-ended "conclusion". It gives me the feeling that there was no point in watching the show in the first place. Screw up the ending and you tarnish how the series as a whole is perceived. Even in the case of Macross 7, it was clear that Basara didn't give a damn about no relationship and that's that. Frontier just tells you to fuck off if you come looking for closure. [END OF SPOILERS]
Macross Plus (OAV)
Macross Zero (OAV)
Magnetic Rose (movie)
Mardock Scramble: The First Compression (movie)
Maria Holic (TV)

(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Excellent
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV 2009 renewal)
Memories (movie)
Metropolis (movie)
Michiko & Hatchin (TV) Some people were really hyping this show when it was coming out, and these were the kind of people that don't like anything as far as I can tell. So I definitely had to check out Michiko to Hatchin. I watched it, the whole time thinking, "hey, this'll get to the good part soon, right?" But there was no good part. It was just, so.... middling. There was just no substance to it. The art and animation was pretty good, but where did this hype come from? I just don't understand.
Mind Game (movie)
Monogatari Series Second Season (TV)
Moondrive (movie)
Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit (TV)
Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku (OAV)
Mushi-Shi (TV) Masterpiece
Naruto (TV) Good Stupid fillers. Great if you can avoid all 100+ filler episodes.
Naruto the Movie: Legend of the Stone of Gelel (movie 2)
Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow
Nasu: A Migratory Bird with Suitcase (OAV)
Nasu: Summer in Andalusia (movie) Pretty great. As an added bonus, it's fairly accurate in its depiction of cycling.
Natsuyuki Rendezvous (TV) The first episode was great, and the rest of it sucked.
Nekomonogatari (Black) (TV)
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Masterpiece 10/10, it's revolutionary for its time. Didn't enjoy it as much as some other anime, but I can appreciate it for what it is. [glowing review here]
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) Decent Watch The End of Evangelion instead. Pt 1 = recap, Pt 2 = lesser version of The End of Evangelion
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Excellent Not really the ending I was looking for, but yep. I liked the original ending better.
Nisemonogatari (TV) HOLYSHITWHATISTHISOHMYGOD. I didn't think I would like Bakemonogatari when I first started watching it, but it turned out to be pretty much the best show that year. Everything else besides the movies that year -- Kara no Kyoukai, Redline, Evangelion 2.0 -- was crap. Obviously, I have the excite. ---------- In retrospect, the new series did not fully live up to what I had hoped for; there is far less metaphor and introspection in Nisemonogatari than in its prequel, much to my chagrin. While there are a number of climactic clashes of philosophy in Nisemono, they mostly end in the main character effectively saying "yeah, well I'm just gonna ignore whatever you say and do what I want, because that's my philosophy." And as the Internet will have you know, this show is fuck filled with fanservice, again, to my chagrin. Still, if there was ever any question as to Nisemono's relative quality, it is the only series I watched to the end this season.
No. 6 (TV) Yeah, the first episode is pretty cool. But literally nothing else about the show is good. Well, the OP is cool. Safu, poor safu.
Nodame Cantabile (TV) Nodame Cantabile was... pretty good. Firstoff, I enjoy classical music, which is necessary in watching this show given the genre. Many episodes have long, uninterrupted segments of various classical symphonies and the such, occasionally going on for 5 minutes or more. The characters managed to not piss me off, which is becoming more and more difficult in this day and age. I wish the characters had more depth, as there were numerous missed opportunities for exposition. Fixed in the sequel, I hope.

Now and Then, Here and There (TV) Spoiler free plot summary: "La-La-Ru?" "Abelia!" "Lala Ru!" "abelia Abelia ABELIA!" "Lala Ru, Lala Ru? Lala Ru!!!" "ABELIAABELIAABELIAABELIA A-B-E-L-I-AAAA!!!!" "... Lala Ru..." ----- Now and Then, Here and There is a pretty good show. Not great, but still pretty good. Few things differentiate what I consider good and what I consider great, leading me to much trouble in describing why I found one show to be more appealing than another. To elaborate, I had serious problems with some of the character motivations, not to mention the initial premise. On the topic of the latter, how the hell did an idiot like Hamudo ever come into power in the first place? Even if it were through inheritance, I find it hard to believe that he would ever be able to maintain any sort of order for more than a day. Tangentially, why would Abelia ever go along with Hamudo's idiotic incompetence? She was never given any reason for her blind devotion to him. [SPOILERS]And how could the "assassins" fail to to shoot Hamudo, despite somehow making it across miles of open desert and into an enemy base without once alerting guards? He was right there, for god's sake! Now's not the time to gloat with your assassin buddy in front of your target about how you totally stealth-killed the guy who isn't your target. [END OF SPOILERS] Although I appear pretty down on this show, it was definitely worth the watch. I'm just a lot better at ranting about what I didn't like.

Otona Joshi no Anime Time (TV)
Ouran High School Host Club (TV) Excellent The first true harem series I've ever seen, and I guess I was lucky in hearing about this one because most of the other harems I've seen have been crap. Actually hoping for a season two (that is, if the manga has enough material to work off of) ----- Watch if you like: -Umm... the genre, I guess? I've got nothing funny to say this time around
Pale Cocoon (OAV)
Paprika (movie)
Paranoia Agent (TV) Masterpiece
Parasite Dolls (OAV)
Perfect Blue (movie) I thought it was pretty mediocre for a Kon film until about halfway through, where stuff started to get interesting. I can't say I liked it more than Paranoia Agent, but it was still better than anything not a Yuasa, Kon, Oshii, or a select few others.
(The) Place Promised in Our Early Days (movie) Masterpiece See "5 Centimeters Per Second (movie)" comment.
Porco Rosso (movie)
(The) Princess and the Pilot (movie) I for some reason had pretty high expectations for this movie, but it turned out to be just mediocre.
Princess Mononoke (movie) Man, why does Ashitaka gotta be all "I'll save everyone"? He could have helped San kill whatshername, get cured by the Deer God, save the ironworks from the emperor's samurai, show the ironworks people the error of their ways in destroying the forest, and still been on good terms with a hot wolf-princess. Instead, he naively tries to save the insolent whatshername, doesn't get rid of his blight (not right away, at least), leaves the ironworks to fight an army by itself, and pisses off the hot wolf princess in the process. What a moron.

Queen Millennia Movie
RahXephon (TV) Excellent Well, what can I say about this series? It's rather confusing to say the least [NOTE: SPOLIERS BELOW] One reason is because I can never keep straight who is related to who... I mean, who the hell would have thought that Mishima Reika is a young Shitou Haruka? They look nothing alike!...and Quon is Ayato's biological mother? wth??? It's not as though this is unexpected, it's just that when you finish a series not understanding stuff like this it's rather annoying. Shouldn't watching an entire series in two days make it easier to understand? That brings me to another thing. It seems almost impossible with the information given throughout the series that the viewers were supposed to know that "tuning the planet" actually meant "time reversal where everyone comes back to life and they all live happily ever after", which EVEN IF you did know would make the ending even more confusing considering there is a baby Quon now (wewt, she's still alive! wait... WTF? isn't she Ayato's mother?! god this is confusing...) [END OF SPOILERS]
Read or Die (OAV)
REC (TV)
Redline (movie) Masterpiece yep.
Royal Space Force - The Wings of Honnêamise (movie)
Samurai Champloo (TV) Excellent
Scrapped Princess (TV) Eh. Pretty dec.
Second Renaissance (OAV)
(The) Secret World of Arrietty (movie) Yeah, it was pretty good. As good as any other older Miyazaki movie. Note that he was not the director for Arrietty.
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) Protip: You'll have no idea what the show's about for the first three episodes... and then some. I had less of an idea what was going on when I finished than when I started, and the ending's kinda lame. Uses a lot of pseudo technology which makes no sense if you have the slightest idea of how computers work. I think this series might be weird just for the sake of weird. Not too bad overall tho... definitely gives off that not-very-modern-anime vibe. The Knights symbol is totally ripping off the freemason crest. (you'll see about halfway in)
Shakugan no Shana (TV) Decent Was able to finish, but didn't like it. I mean, what the hell kind of ending was that?!? And seriously now, was there really a need for a season two? NOTHING HAS CHANGED FROM THE FIRST EPISODE OF THE FIRST SEASON. they could have had a great ending, but no, they failed. WARNING: Series will make you stupider, but less so than season 2.
Shanghai Dragon (movie)
She and Her Cat (OAV)
(The) Sky Crawlers (movie) Hmmm... I don't know what to think of it.
Soliton no Akuma (movie)
Speed Grapher (TV) Summary: Best anime ever. Well, second best after Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann of course. ----- Anywho, the animation is horrible, the plot is generic, and the characters are generally cliched, but holy fuck is it awesome. I mean, the guy can make people's heads explode WITH HIS FREAKING CAMERA! How awesome is that? I might have been crazy at the time (I marathoned the series in ~24hrs) but it goes without saying you have to watch this. Less blood than Elfen Lied, but some of the deaths are more gruesome ("lolwut?" you say, but it's true). And nudity, it's got plenty of nudity. ----- Random note: Don't take this series seriously.
Spice and Wolf (TV) Excellent Pretty unique in most regards, and definitely lived up to my expectations.
Spice and Wolf II (TV)
Steamboy (movie)
Steins;Gate (TV) OH SNAP. Now, I was pretty god damn happy after watching the first episode of this show. Masamune Shirow-esque introspection and Hideaki Anno level imagery in the first two episodes got my hopes up to an unfulfillable degree. Since the first two or three episodes, this show has been total bs. Questioning how definite our sensory-based perception of reality is has turned into "oh no, bad guys are doing bad stuff. we're the only ones to stop them, so let's do that." I've watched about 15 episodes so far, and very rarely does a show go from good to worse to better again. Being based off of a visual novel, Steins;Gate will probably be total bs in the middle of the story, when the characters go about their shitty lives doing stuff no one rightfully cares about. But could the conclusion be totally fucking insane, in a good way? I hope so, but so far the central mystery of the plot seems to have been effectively solved, leaving only execution on the protagonists' part. While there is always room for plot twists, the show has already strayed so far from what made it interesting in the beginning I can hardly justify continuing to watch. Having taken a break from the show and now finishing it (along with bonus episode 25), the series was pretty ok up until the end. It did not hit the same high that the beginning of the show offered, but there was still drama and Kyouma's antics to be had. I don't regret the time I spent watching this show, but it -- or rather, the visual novel -- did not live up to its apparent potential.
Stink Bomb (movie) Wow. This guy is an idiot.
Strawberry Panic! (TV) Excellent Woot! The first un-confusing ending I've seen in months! (stupid RahXephon...) It's basically a romance/drama yuri series... not much to say, I can't think of anything. I liked it a lot more compared most romance series I've seen. The other two yuri series I've seen as of writing this (Simoun and ~Girl Meets Girl~) were just painfully bad in comparison. ----- Random Stuff: There is a book that says the word "French", written in English, in Japan. ----- Life lessons learned - "You can't repel from a second story balcony with an umbrella" "There is no reason to study for a test when you can pull an all night cram session" "In Japan, challenging someone to a duel means playing them in a tenis match" et cetera et cetera (forgot the rest already) ----- Watch if you like... well I don't know really. Just watch it.
Summer Wars (movie) So. Over-hyped. Can't. Write. Coherently. ----- Yes, Summer Wars has excellent animation quality. Yes, it has uncommonly good art direction; I'll even cope to enjoying the superb execution of -- almost -- every scene. The whole family-centric nature of the movie created a lively atmosphere and fairly believable characters that made for a good movie, but by no means "the best thing since Cowboy Bebop". Seriously, what the hell? I simply don't understand this feel-good sort of anime being considered amazing. It's very good, just don't be giving me any of this best-thing-ever stuff.
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross (TV) SDF Macross: unless you watched this show back when it came out and haven't seen a single anime since, you're stupid for thinking it's good. ----- Art/animation merits aside, the story is just a series of vaguely strung together events, which never even come to a decent conclusion. Pacing is almost nonexistent at times, especially in the case of major, turning-point events which are hardly even remembered ten minutes later. Odd choices in execution make you wonder how long writers actually thought about whether something made sense, as is often not the case in Macross. The same three--maybe four--music tracks are used from beginning to end: a somewhat comedic throwaway scene might have the same music as a "solemn" scene (if this show is capable of such a thing), noticeably lessening the impact of the overall experience. SDF Macross is not a bad anime in the modern sense, with your moe crap, generic shounen, and horrendous voice-acting, but it still manages somehow. Arguing that "it's good because of the mech designs" just doesn't make up for all of the problems with everything else in the show. ----- Space Fireworks. Yep, space fireworks.
Sword of the Stranger (movie)
(The) Tatami Galaxy (TV) This is the first time Yuasa Masaaki in a directorial role hasn't lived up to my expectations. I feel this is mostly due to the story being based off a book of some sort, so he doesn't have the same degree of liberty as in the past. But the whole late-middle part of the show is practically Endless Eight. Unlike endless eight, Tatami still changes some overt aspects of each episode, despite following the same ideas and plot development each time like Higurashi would. The reason I had a problem with this, and all shows like Tatami for that matter, is that I get the sense that there is no point in me watching the show, as inevitably nothing will count for anything by the time the next episode rolls around. The unnamed protagonist invariably falls to the woes of his shitty college life, and with nowhere to turn, the show just ends. Fortunately the last two episodes are ball-breakingly awesome, and the series comes to a satisfying conclusion almost completely making up for the suck. One redeeming feature of the middle episodes are the subtle allusions to the final two episodes, which I thought were a nice touch.
Teekyū (TV)
Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee (TV) I'm liking the food motif, but this seems to fall to the wayside after the first few episodes. The beginning and end of the series are the only parts with plot progression, with the majority of the episodes being nothing but filler. If you're looking for a nice, self-contained plot then you're out of luck, as the ending isn't really an ending either.
Tenchi Muyo! (OAV 1/1992)
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (OAV 2/1994)
Tenchi Muyo! The Night Before The Carnival (OAV)
Tenjho Tenge (TV) Good
Tenjho Tenge: Ultimate Fight (OAV) Weak Did absolutely nothing to add to the story. Completely pointless.
Texhnolyze (TV) Masterpiece Hell. Yes.
They Were 11 (movie) Surprisingly amazing.
Time of Eve (ONA)
Tohai Densetu Akagi -Yamini Maiorita Tensai- (TV)
Tojin Kit (movie)
Trigun (TV) Anyone who considers themselves well-versed in anime should see Trigun at least once; definitely one of those classics. By far the most lovable characters in recent memory. Vash + walkman = teh win.
Trigun: Badlands Rumble (movie)
Trinity Blood (TV) Very good The first vampire series I saw. ----- Trinity Blood: "Why do all of the critics hate me?" *gets teary-eyed* Me: "It's ok, it's ok... you'll always have a place in my heart, Trini-chan"
True Tears (TV) A laughably generic high school romance/drama. Definitely not -ef- level, but still okay I guess. Fun to laugh at with friends if you've got time to kill, but you'd have to be pretty damn bored to do so.
(The) Twelve Kingdoms (TV)
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) Excellent
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) Masterpiece See "5 Centimeters Per Second (movie)" comment.
Wanwa the Puppy (movie)
Wasurenagumo (movie)
WATAMOTE (TV) Watamote is a hilariously sad story about a high schooler that is the living embodiment of 2ch culture. She is inept at even the simplest of social interactions and yet is conceited to no end, putting her in situations that on first thought laughable but on second thought crushingly depressing for those who can relate to her life. Mako, the aforementioned high schooler, is a character I dearly want to see succeed in spite of her inner arrogance. Certainly she has some vile thoughts about the few people, mostly family members, that care about her, but her self-loathing paints her as a seriously depressed, rather than mean-spirited, person. Watamote will remind more than a few of incredibly lonely periods in their lives, but the show throws in enough goofs and gags to keep the show from being in any way a tragedy, even skewing towards a positive outlook at times. Watamote is a show that meticulously characterizes a very particular kind of person, and in that regard it succeeds spectacularly.
Welcome to the NHK (TV) Very good First thing's first: Catchiest. Insert-song. Ever. (Puru puru pururin pururin Puru puru pururin purupururin Puru puru pururin pururi... ok I'll shut up now.) ----- Interesting for the most part, to say the least. It nearly pulled a shakugan no shana on you (see comment), but ended in more of a "we'll just let you fill in the blanks as to what happens afterwords" sort of manner. The series itself contains rather erm... how should I put this? Well the philosophies of the supposed protaganists just piss me off sometimes, as do a lot of other series. This isn't the entire reason though; it doesn't have to be the philosophy, rather, it can be other elements I can't find the words to explain. ----- Culprits include: Tenjou Tenge (douchebags who beat up people for no reason), Shakugan no Shana (all of you are just horrible, even more so in the second season), Grenadier (I hate all of you.), Gankutsuou (rich jerks), Fate/Stay Night (Fuck you, Shirou, you get the #1 asshole of all time award), Chobits (tied for 2nd with shana is Hideki), and Air Gear (I can't remember if this is right, but I think I recall some assholes in this series too). Many of these series have sexist main characters too, adding to my hatred of them (Chobits, Fate/Stay Night, ect.). ----- Most importantly, Simoun: "No. Just... no."
When They Cry - Higurashi (TV) Decent Just really not that good. Some parts try to be dramatic, but made me want to laugh. Many times the facial expressions didn't really match up with the voice acting (leading to some lulz). I was hoping that the retroactive continuity would actually make coherent sense in the end, but the explanation was really weak and felt like it was just an excuse to re-use material. From what I've seen of the second season, it's pretty much the same thing despite going a little further in explaining why things are the way they are. Not worth it in my opinion. ----- [SPOILERS] Ok, spoiler territory. I do realize that there exist multiple "universes" in which this anime takes place, but what the hell kind of explanation is that? Is it just so they can kill off Rika for the third time? By the end I didn't care at all for the fate of the characters. After hearing about the stupid cameraman dying twenty times, I was glad it was over. I absolutely love the characters in the first episode of each part, but one inevitably goes crazy and kills a bunch of people, which doesn't fit their "daytime personality" whatsoever. Apparently everybody has a split personality. This series needs less assholes murdering people and more Rena moe-ing over how cute Rika is (Ni-paaa~~~). [END SPOILERS]
Whisper of the Heart (movie)
A Wind Named Amnesia (movie)
Witch Hunter Robin (TV) This show really pisses me off. Nothing happens in the first 11 episodes plot-wise. No time is taken in developing characters whatsoever (at least most episodes had one or two enjoyable moments). The ending sucks balls: a boring escape-from-the-enemy-base-before-it-explodes episode and a post-credits scene that doesn't even answer any of the completely obvious questions still looming. I wouldn't mind if it was just one of those open-ended closers that are quite common, but good god was that post-credits scene asinine. WHO THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO BE SEEING HERE? I wouldn't recommend it unless you're bored as hell; for reference, I'd say it's about on the same level as Kurozuka, average at best. And average for an anime means terrible.
Wolf's Rain (TV) Masterpiece Damn, good dub AND a good anime? Hells yes.
World Record (OAV)
Xam'd: Lost Memories (ONA) Good HOLY SHIT! What I say here isn't really important to the plot, nor is this anime very good, so go ahead and read spoilers if you don't plan to watch it (even if you do, I've omitted most details), because it's rather interesting: [SPOILERS] episode 26, ****** transforms, and the sphere of light turns inside out EXACTLY LIKE the solution to Smale's paradox! search for "everting sphere" on youtube to see what I mean. Fucking crazy I say. [END SPOILERS] ----- It started out with a lot of potential, but didn't really do anything with it. The episodes leading up to the ending sucked, and the ending was a meh.
