Mission-E (TV) Decent The last episode finally got subbed. This is not the direct sequel to Code-E I was expecting. It's set several years later it seems. They've certainly turned up the action and fanservice content compared to Code-E's calm nature.
In the end it wasn't too bad, though it did feel like a lot of background story and details were left out.
Mitsuwano (OAV) Decent Like Kurage No Shokudou an award-winning manga/LN adapted into an anime OVA. It's only one ep., so let's check it out.
Wow, that's a terribly strict lifestyle. They must really love it to choose that. I don't really see the appeal of maiko. Decent slice-of-life, but the animation was a bit stilted in the beginning, and the central problem felt a bit contrived with how quickly it was resolved. Nice, but not great.
Miyori in the Sacred Forest (special) Excellent I came across this while looking up Chitose Hajime, the singer of Ayakashi Horror Tales's ED theme.
Whoa, hidden treasure! This is one gorgeous movie. The story isn't super deep, but that's okay for a fairytale. It's like a Miyazaki movie (especially Totoro and Mononoke Hime), or Mushishi, or Arjuna (art and theme, not preachiness). This really deserves much more exposure (only 37 ratings yet).
Miyuki-chan in Wonderland (OAV) Not really good Yuri. Very Clamp style, although the animation is quite minimal.
Well, that was very short and very random.
Modern Magic Made Simple (TV) Good Ooph, lots of pointless fanservice. I was expecting something like Someday's Dreamers, but it seems that this anime will have a little more plot.
Okay, it was a little hard to follow for the first few episodes because of flashbacks and a bit of time travel, but there is a decent plot. There is quite a lot of action too, which I hadn't expected at all. The fanservice and male gaze were very annoying at times. The rest of the anime is not bad at all though. I hope to see more like this. The combination of magic and a modern urban setting is fun.
Mokke (TV) Good Reminds me a little of Mushishi. Supernatural phenomena and a beautiful countryside setting. The animation isn't bad, but there are a lot of still shots or pans, which seems kinda cheap.
This anime is really slice-of-life in that there is no ongoing plot whatsoever. Except for the explanations/background in early episodes and the rare reference to earlier events, you could watch this series out of order. It's entertaining, but not riveting or anything. Like I said, the backgrounds look very nice, but the faces switch between one expression and another without any transition, which looks rather cheap. Dialogue is also sometimes a bit stiff.
Second time watching. I'm not sure what that was about the faces. The animation is noticeably limited a lot of the time, but the faces don't stand out really. The bonus ep. is a flashback to four years before present, so it can be watched at any point really.
Momo: The Girl God of Death (TV) Very good Sweet little slice-of-life stories where Momo passes by. Reminds me of Shigofumi a little, except this is all sweetness (well, with a little sadness too) so far, and no suffering and madness. I wonder if we'll get to see more of Momo later on.
Hmm. I wonder if this was an adaptation of a longer manga or so. It was mostly sweet, but there really was very little about Momo herself and the work she does.
Momoiro Sisters (TV) Weak Why did I get this again? Oh yes, it was recommended as being all about women. Hmm. A lot of it wouldn't pass the Bechdel Test I think. Well, at least the eps. are short, so it goes by quickly enough.
Moondrive (movie) Bad Part of Genius Party Beyond. Oh blegh, one of those anime. Reminds me of that "Sex & Violence With Mach Speed" entry from Japan Animator Expo, with a gang treating its lone female member as a source of money.
MoonPhase (TV) Good Weird/creepy, but with loli, so, not really creepy. Hmm, a few eps. in it seems to be more of a magical girlfriend anime.
The repeating nekomimi and tsundere comedy is getting a little tiresome halfway through. The surreal art style is certainly unique among anime (it seems to be a mixture of various 20th century modern art styles), but kinda hampers immersion in the story.
Luckily, after the first arc the art shifts to a more normal style and the anime becomes quite enjoyable. Overall, it's not top entertainment, but definitely not bad.
Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit (TV) Excellent It has a strong female protagonist, and gets a lot of praise. Sounds interesting, ne?
The first episode looks very good indeed. The animation is smooth, with 3D and 2D blended seamlessly. And Balsa is very cool and confident.
Yes, this anime deserves its reputation. It's indeed of top quality. The last episode (post-ending conclusion) could've been a little better I think, but otherwise this series was very satisfying.
Morita-san wa Mukuchi (TV) Very good Nothing much, but quite relaxing. Is there no ED? Looks like it. That makes it even shorter than Aiura, even though I think the actual stories are slightly longer.
Morita-san wa Mukuchi. 2 (TV) Very good More of the same. I guess I'm a lot like Mayu, never saying much ^_^;
(The) Morose Mononokean (TV) Very good Tagged as iyashikei/supernatural. It's a bit like Natsume Yuujinchou, but also reminds me of xxxHolic. MC is a bishounen, second MC is an ikemen, supernatural/exorcism stuff.
But it was really cute. Unlike Natsume, there aren't any bad youkai here. The last part about Hanae not being able to see youkai anymore was drawn out a bit too long for an ending, that's about the only minor flaw. I wonder if the manga will give more background, like why Ashiya is such an important name or what happened between Itsuki and Aoi.
(The) Morose Mononokean II (TV 2) Very good Ooh, more Mononokean. I've already read all this in the manga, but it's nice to see it animated. The personalities seem a bit exaggerated. Maybe it's just the first ep., to introduce them? I wonder if there'll be an anime-only climax again.
Hmm, not really an added climax, they just used the spider youkai exorcism story, which is plenty dramatic already. Before that though, the bit where Itsuki snuck into the Justice's library seems to be anime-only. I can't find it around that point in the manga at least. Maybe they wanted to have the Underworld folks show up one more time in the anime? The section of the manga that this season covers didn't have much Underworld action besides Hanae's visit to the Justice, so that might be it. Otherwise it seemed fairly faithful to the manga. It probably skipped some minor stories though. Anyways, this was another nice season of a good anime. I hope it runs as long as Natsume Yuujinchou (which it definitely resembles).
Moyashimon (TV) So-so The art looks a little cheap in places, and I'm afraid they'll run out of plot quickly. Well, let's see where it goes. I hope no cheese shows up :(
Hmm, I think it's more the character designs of Itsuki, Kawahama and Misato that bother me, as well as the others when in face-fault mode. They look like they escaped from an American cartoon. As for the story, it does get better, although it focuses a little too much on the oh so wonderful world of sake and nattou of course. In the end, I would've liked to see more of Yuuki and Oikawa's stories, but they get very little time, and get cut off by the anime ending at only 11 eps. Not a bad anime, but it could've been much better.
Rewatched this before S2. It doesn't treat the female characters very well at all. They're basically there to be lectured, ogled, or act as motivation/prize/victim for the male characters. Well, let's see how S2 goes.. :/
Moyashimon Returns (TV) So-so Yah, Yuuki's intro in the first min. of ep.1 is complete fail. All the others get just a name label, and only Yuuki gets a ♂ symbol added :( From what I read the icky stuff (i.e. the men treating women as non-sentient aliens stuff; not the fermentation stuff, although that is a different kind of icky) continues too, so I have low hopes for this.
Well, the festival part had some questionable stuff, but the rest was okayish. They only sent Sawaki and those two guys to France though, which made that part more boring. It also didn't really fit very well into the rest of the anime. There was some stuff about wine, but it didn't go as technical as the sake and miso stuff were. Only the second half of the last ep. did the whole gang get back together, basically only to summarize.
Overall I wouldn't recommend Moyashimon. The technical stuff gets a little boring, but is okay in general. The characters don't really have much depth, and the whole thing is very male-centric. Everything feels half auto-biographical, with some female eye-candy added. Pretty boring, and sometimes ugh.
Mo~tto! Ojamajo Doremi (TV) Very good And again everything's back in just one ep., including introducing the new girl. This season ending/beginning didn't mention the fairies at all. I wonder if they're forgotten :/
Well, apparently not, but this season feels like it has too many characters to give each one proper attention. It's not that Momoko gets in the way, she's fine and fits into the team quite well. But we hardly ever see Majo Rika, Pop and the fairies anymore :(
Ep.20 was a little weird. On one hand it's realistic that a problem doesn't get resolved in one ep., on the other I fear we won't see Kayoko again.
Ep.28 was all about Hana, with only Doremi appearing in the second half. Please don't leave out Hana's other moms like that :(
I take back what I said about characters being forgotten. Everyone still gets their turn in the spotlight. The only one that's flanderized is Majo Rika. Feels like all she does is shout "bakamon!" at the girls.
Hmm, Kayoko unexpectedly got three eps. after all. The third one resolves things a little too easily and dramatically though.
Oh, this season's ending is a bit different. Well, having a reset ending for a third time would've been a bit much. Instead we got a bit of a cliffhanger. Anyway, this was another great season of Ojamajo. Next up is Na-i-sho I think.
Mo~tto! Ojamajo Doremi Kaeru Seki no Himitsu (movie) So-so Again a very short movie. Basically just one ep. As such, the story is quite rushed (and doesn't really have a point; it's just a little adventure).
It's interesting how often death is mentioned in Ojamajo Doremi. It doesn't get a whole lot of attention, but the subject is not avoided either the way it is in most anime.
Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood (TV) Decent Vampire yuri. Well, it doesn't seem to be very deep. Typical 4-koma fare really. It also feels like it already put all its vampire jokes in the first ep. The yuri aspect is more Akari forcing herself into Sophie's life and both of them being okay with that. Well, it's not bad at least, so let's watch it.
From ep.4 on there's double the vampires. Basically every half-ep. is a new short story.
Well, that was decent I guess. Nice, but the problem with 4-koma-based anime like this is always that they run out of gags pretty soon. After that it's just repetition. That's not necessarily bad if the characters are nice, but it gets a little boring if there are never any new developments. There's a half-ep. about a vampire hunter visiting, but it's just a few weak jokes and then she gives up on hunting vampires because she found out there's nice ones too. The 2nd-to-last half-ep. finally brings up Sophie and Ellie maybe sucking Akari's blood, except they don't because they don't want to depend on a friend that way. Lots of vampire stories do exactly that, but here it gets excused because it would change the status quo. There's some vague hints at yuri, but even that is just suggested, not shown. So all in all it's merely nice.
Mt. Head (movie) Decent Unusual bit of anime, mentioned here. It's short, so why not.
Yep, unusual indeed. A very sketchy art style, and shamisen&voice-over narration. The story itself isn't very interesting, and the ending not surprising, but overall it's a nice little curiosity.
Mugen Shinshi: Bōken Katsugeki Hen (OAV) Bad Yet another anime where I have no idea why it was on my list. It was quite bad too. Distressed damsel is saved by cunning detective and bumbling police chief. The villains are primitive caricatures of Chinese. The plot is typical for the detective-vs-villain genre, a mad scientist trying to sell technology to revive the dead to several warring countries. Bleh.
Murder Princess (OAV) Excellent Coincidentally, another Bee Train anime. The OP has the same problem as Claymore's: the music rocks.. until the singer opens his mouth.
Whoo, now that is one kick-ass princess :) I wonder what'll happen to the original princess now.
Aw, why do the best anime always have to be the shortest? This was so awesome, but only six eps. long :(
Mushi-Shi (TV) Excellent This is a bit of an odd duck. It has no ongoing story, so each episode stands by itself. Each little story centers around mushi (literally 'bugs', but in this 'verse they're some sort of slightly supernatural proto-lifeforms) of course, and it often plays out like a mystery story. If that doesn't sound appealing to you, so be it, but you'll be missing out on gorgeous art and very good music.
Mushishi Tokubetsu-hen: Hihamukage (special) Excellent A double length special ep. Standalone story, but a few characters from the first season appear. I wonder if the ending is a setup for the second season.
Mushishi Zoku-Shō Tokubetsu-hen: Odoro no Michi (special) Excellent Another double-length ep., like the one at the start of S2. ANN lists all three (there's another one at the end of S2) as specials, but they're really just part of S2.
This one shows some more of Tanyuu and the background she has with another clan of mushishi. I notice that she, Ginko and that collector/doctor whose name escapes me atm are the only characters who do face-faults.
Mushishi: The Next Chapter (TV) Excellent Nice to see more Mushishi, and in HD too now. The three double-length eps. that ANN lists as specials are really just part of this season. "Hihamukage" goes before the first ep., "Odoro No Michi" goes between eps.10 and 13 (11 in ANN's numbering), and "Suzu No Shizuku" goes at the end after ep.22 (20 in ANN's numbering). Although they're standalone stories as usual, so it's not very important to watch them at those points.
This season continues the adventures of Ginko. Not much is different from the first season really, including how the characters who are victims or afflicted with mushi are rather often women. That's really the only flaw of this anime; otherwise it's really pretty and captivating.
Mushishi: Zoku-Shō: Suzu no Shizuku (movie) Excellent ANN lists this as a movie because it was shown in theaters, but it's just the third of three double-length eps. of S2. This ep. somewhat harks back to the first eps. of S1, what with the river of light thing at the end, which is probably intended.
My Dear Marie (OAV) So-so A short OVA that has some mildly interesting stuff, especially in the third ep. There is fanservice though, and if it passes the Bechdel Test, it's just barely.
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) Excellent This is a really cute movie. I'd love to show it to my nieces. I wonder if there's a Dutch dub. It is a Ghibli movie, so there's a chance there is one.
I guess big trees are another Miyazaki thing? Nausicaä and Laputa also had them.
I also need to replace this DVD; it hiccuped twice. Hmm, both this and Nausicaä (also defective) are Disney releases. I wonder if Kiki's and Porco Rosso will have the same problem.
My Neighbors the Yamadas (movie) So-so
My-HiME (TV) Good Interesting story if you look past the juvenile humor and fanservice of the earlier eps. The reason for the fighting between HiMEs in the second half of the series wasn't sufficiently explained IMO, which weakens the story. Soundtrack by Yuki Kajiura too.
My-Otome (TV) Very good Better than Mai-HiME. This is one of those stories/series where you wish you could explore the setting/background/world a little more.
My-Otome 0~S.ifr~ (OAV) Very good Looks like it might be an interesting prequel that gives some answers as to how things got to be the way they are in Mai-Otome, but I'm afraid the OVA format will lead to rushing of the storyline again. There's only one episode so far, so we barely get to know the main characters.
Well, all three eps. have been released for a while now, so it was time to watch this again. I haven't watched Mai-Otome again though, so I was a little uncertain about the relationships. I'm sure there is more info to be found if I did that.
There is a lot of action of course. It's only a short OVA after all. Lots of fanservice too unfortunately, but I suppose it can't be helped. It was nice to see Miyu again, as well as to get some more hints at a connection between Mai-HiME and Mai-Otome. I'm not sure what to make of the Schwartz and Aswad. They don't get much screen time except as cannon fodder. The biggest mystery I think was the origin of Lena's 'unauthorized Robe' at the end, unless I'm missing something. Maybe there's a connection to the rumored new anime?
My-Otome Zwei (OAV) So-so Not all that interesting. The story is told in a somewhat disjointed way, making jumps that only make sense later on. There's a stupid fanservice bath scene somewhere, etc. It's nice to see the characters from Mai-Otome again, but at this rate they shouldn't have bothered. No answers were given to the political developments (Aswad-Windbloom relationship, Otome technology being publicized) either.
Mysteria Friends (TV) Decent aka Manaria Friends. Yuri slice-of-life. Spin-off from Rage Of Bahamut. It's pretty short. Only 10 eps., of 14min. each. I wonder if I need to watch the main series first.
I dunno, it doesn't feel like the main series would focus much on these two. Anne and Grea are really cute together, but it all feels very male-gazey, from the visual focus to some of their behavior. There's also a creeptastic stalker/protector hanging out in the background all the time. It's pretty and well-made though. There's not much depth, and the ending isn't optimistic about their future together. All in all, it's merely nice.
Mystery of the Necronomicon (OAV) So-so Found this reviewed on a Lovecraftian blog. Mostly horror/mystery, with a side of hentai. One ep. in it's no more porny than the average western movie though, and the gruesome murders totally offset that. Not much Lovecraftian mythos yet though.
Well, that was.. just okayish. They went for Herbert West as the story to base this on. One of Lovecraft's stories that doesn't involve what he later became famous for. Well, there's the horror aspect of course, he's also famous for that. Somehow the Necronomicon gets brought up as a devil's book several times, but it doesn't really play any role in the story. The few sex scenes barely fit into the story at times. Feels like they added them to draw in a bigger audience, but they weren't the primary reason for the anime. The ending didn't kill off any of the main or suporting characters. I expected the lesbian woman to heroically sacrifice herself, but that didn't happen fortunately. Overall not really great, but it's interesting to see that apparently Lovecraft was known enough in 1999 in Japan to base an anime even on one of his lesser-known stories.
Nandaka Velonica (TV) Decent Cute, but at 10×10min. it's a bit short. Feels like a child version of Space Channel 5 at first, but after that it's only the ED. There's too much (straight) romance for a kids' anime really.
Naria Girls (TV) Weak 2016-07. From creators of Gdgd Fairies. Mentioned on #precure and seemed interesting.
Yeah, definitely a parody of magical girl anime from the Gdgd folks. They just give the seiyuu prompts to ramble on about to fill major parts of the "story". The magical girl thing is just scaffolding, so bare it automatically becomes a parody. Well, at 8½min./ep. I guess I can finish this.
Done. That was a bit of a waste of time. The random chatting isn't really funny, and the story (if you can call it that) isn't really interesting either. The ending too was meh.
Natsuiro Kiseki (TV) Excellent I don't clearly remember what the plot of this anime was supposed to be. I mean, it's slice-of-life, but from the first ep. I've no idea where it's going yet.
Ah, so it's going to be a fun-with-random-wishes comedy. Still slice-of-life sort of though.
Pity this isn't licensed. I'd love to own this. It's just so lovely.
Natsume Yūjin-Chō Go (TV 5) Very good And this season starts right off with some details about Reiko.
And that was also about the only new info we got about Reiko. There were focus eps. for Natori and Touko/Shigeru, there was one Taki ep., and Tanuma appeared a few times. Overall a good balance between characters. It's still very slice-of-life; there's hardly any plot progress. Well, insofar as there is a plot of course. What I most want to see is more about Reiko (didn't happen in this season, except for the bit of info at the beginning), and more development of Natori and Matoba (there was some of that, though it's still not out in the open). Not that Matoba is a likeable character mind you, but he's kinda the biggest antagonist.
The two OVA eps. are stand-alone as expected. Overall it was a decent season. Not as melancholy as 3 and 4, and it gave a little more depth to some characters.
Natsume Yūjin-Chō Roku (TV 6) Very good Another nice season of Natsume Yuujinchou. Some focus eps., and some plot progress. In the last ep. Natsume finally tells Natori about his grandma, and we learn that Natsume might actually have had a grandpa. No details though. I think I read somewhere there will be two bonus eps. on the BDs again, but those aren't out yet.
Natsume Yūjin-Chō: Itsuka Yuki no Hi ni (OAV) Very good A cute little one ep. side story.
Natsume Yūjin-Chō: Nyanko-sensei to Hajimete no Otsukai (OAV) Good Nyanko-sensei helps some kids find the store they were going to. As expected of such an OVA, a lot of characters make short appearances. Nothing outstanding, but it's cute.
Natsume's Book of Friends (TV) Excellent A nice sweet slice of life / supernatural anime, somewhat reminiscent of Wagaya No Oinarisama and Mokke.
Natsume's Book of Friends (TV 2) Excellent The story of Natsume's friendships is moving forward very slowly. I hope the upcoming third season shows more of that.
Rewatch before S5&6. Ep.10 is quite off-model. It seems it had a different director and key animator.
Natsume's Book of Friends (TV 3) Very good This season seems to be a little more melancholy. I thought Natsume had gotten over that back in S1 already.
The NISA subs may have had a few minor mistakes, but this fansub group's are really quite bad. The alternative subs are slightly better. Ep.6/7 are more intrigue/mystery/thriller than slice-of-life.
Yep, definitely more melancholy/serious than the first two seasons. I dunno, it still ends happy, but they dwell on Natsume's sad past a bit much sometimes.
Rewatch before S5&6. Hmm, I guess this season was a little jarring compared to the first two seasons the first time I watched it? I didn't find it all that melancholy this time. It does spend rather a lot of time reintroducing all of the regular characters at the start, and the last ep. is just nice fluff.
Natsume's Book of Friends (TV 4) Very good Wow, we fall right into a longer arc in the first ep. Didn't expect that.
Hmm, like season 3 this was a little heavier on the flashbacks/melancholy than the first two, but not really bad. There were several longer arcs, including some with the Matobas and Natori. Not much about Reiko though :/ The ending was a little drawn out.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) Excellent A pretty cool movie. I'm especially impressed with the world it presents; quite different from the usual modern or fantasy worlds. Now that I've watched it again, some pieces of music reminded me of Chrono Cross, and the Sea of Corruption is quite similar to parts of that game's world too. The game was probably inspired in part by this movie.
The movie compresses and switched around some parts of the manga, which is much longer. And there's the messiah thing Nausicaä has going on of course, what with the legend at the beginning, and the explicit reference to it at the end, along with her dying and being revived by the ohmu. None of that's in the manga. The movie also leaves out a large part of the world and its politics. Still very good though.
Negima!? (TV) Very good Is this the version that's not so fanservicey/ecchi?
Whoa, character overload o_o It's just like Pani Poni Dash, with Becky replaced by Negi and all the students put in one class. And it's just as great and funny too :)
Ep. 19 is so adorable! ^_^ If the last few eps. don't mess it up, this anime will be even better than PPD. Yep, we have a winner here.
