| Neo-Tokyo (movie) | So-so | Anthology similar to Robot Carnival. Discussed here. Hmm. The first segment is more showing off neat animation than any kind of story. Impressive when you realize it was done by hand, but otherwise not really interesting. The second segment is again visually very impressive, but doesn't really have much of a story. Segment 3 does have a story, but it's not a very deep one, with a predictable ending. Again, the animation is very good. At the end there's a short bit of segment 1 to frame things off. Overall this is worth watching for fans of animation (the technical/visual aspect that is), but if you're looking for an entertaining story or interesting characters, look elsewhere. |
| Neuro - Supernatural Detective (TV) | Very good | A fun anime, with a likeable main character. The final arc was a bit weird though. 2nd time: yep, still a fun anime. |
| New Dominion Tank Police (OAV) | Decent | It's only a few years younger than DTP, but the quality is much improved. Did I just see a prototype tachikoma? O_O The subtitles often don't exactly match the spoken Japanese. They're probably just a copy of the English dub :/ |
| New Game! (TV) | Very good | Slice-of-life:comedy. The manga I read was mildly interesting, so let's give it a try. First ep. seems to stick pretty close to the manga, but that's not really surprising. It did feel like they covered quite a bit of manga in the first ep. Maybe it just felt longer there? Was ep.7's fanservice also in the manga? I don't recall that part. And as expected, it ends with the release party of Fairies Story 3. Well, that's a good ending point. I seem to recall the manga playing up the Kou/Rin relationship a bit more. Maybe it's just me. A nice anime. Wouldn't it be nice if all-women game companies like that existed IRL? Minus the crunch part of course, that'd still suck. Guess I'll comment on the OVA here since it doesn't have an ANNcyclopedia entry yet. It seems familiar, like I've seen it before, but I guess that's just from reading the manga. Well, they did pick a part with more fanservice opportunities of course, without really moving the story ahead, so it's quite suited for an OVA adaptation. |
| New Game!! (TV 2) | Good | It's been just long enough since I read the manga and watched S1 that I've forgotten the exact events, but not the characters. Hmm, there's quite a few things that I'm pretty sure I didn't see in the manga. Either a lot has been added to that since I read it or this is anime-only. I don't think they'd do that, so it's probably the former. Oh, did they add more fanservice this season or did I forget about that too? Some scenes are a little too much really. It doesn't get explicit or anything, but some of these scenes really have no other point than fanservice. The ED too. I'm not sure if this second half / ending is a definite way to end the series or a hook for another season. On one hand Kou is more or less written out of the story, and with two game cycles covered there wouldn't be that much new for a third season, on the other hand there are Momiji and Tsubame who haven't gotten all that much development yet. Maybe I should check up on the manga. Aside from the fanservice this was another good season though. Maybe not as good as the first, but pretty good still. |
| Nichijō (OAV) | Very good | A quick taste of what Nichijou will be like. It looks like another Azumanga Daioh / Lucky☆Star style comedy, but with a slightly different visual style. Looking forward to the main TV series. |
| Nichijou - My Ordinary Life (TV) | Very good | There are times when this anime is awesome, and there are times when it is only extreme reaction shot after extreme reaction shot. On average, it's still worth it, but don't expect to be entertained or amused all the time. |
| NieA_7 (TV) | Not really good | Yoshitoshi Abe's character designs are easy to recognize. I hope Niea becomes more likeable, because so far she's only annoying. Halfway through, and it doesn't look like Niea's getting any better. The comedy in general consists of a lot of screaming. Not exactly my kind of humor it seems. Pity, because the aliens being treated as second-class citizens could've been an interesting plot element. And finished. All in all it doesn't actually go anywhere. Slice-of-life, I guess, but usually those anime have humor or beauty or wit to make up for it. This one doesn't. |
| Night at High Noon and the Wonder Gate (movie) | So-so | This is part three. Part one, two. And here's the conclusion. Which is kinda similar to the rest of the trilogy. Bits of adventure without much between them, that's drawn out to fill the length of the movie. And it's not very long even. All three parts are ~45min. not counting the 5min. ending credits. This part fills in Sana's backstory, there's many loaded silences, halfway through Sindbad and the big bad (Galip?) have a strawman argument about travel vs. watching TV that feels crammed in to satisfy someone's pet annoyance, there's a battle at the end that is fairly meaningless but fills the action quota. And then at the end Sana goes to live with what's said to be her people (even though her parents are dead and half of the city-state she grew up in consisted of non-magical folks who are elsewhere), thereby removing her mcguffin self from the world, magic disappears everywhere because apparently her presence was all that was needed to make it work even half the world away, and Sindbad goes against his reputation as an adventurer and goes back to his mom, even leaving the Bahr. Oh, and underling villain Daal joins the Bahr's crew for some reason, without any punishment for his role in the bad stuff that happened. Well, at least him switching sides when Galip fires on him too is a little satisfying. I guess from the above it's clear I found this movie trilogy a bit lacking in coherent plot and story. |
| Night of Taneyamagahara (movie) | So-so | It's more like a picture drama than an anime, but they're very nice pictures. Kazuo Oga is a Ghibli background artist after all. The story is slice-of-life, without a plot or resolution really. Just some farmers talking and the dream of one of them. Nice for people interested in the works of Kenji Miyazawa, or those who want to see everything from Studio Ghibli. |
| Night on the Galactic Railroad (movie) | Good | Wow, this anime moves slowly. Maybe appropriate for a Kenji Miyazawa story, but this slow? :/ Aww, that was a sweet story. A little sad too of course. And indeed very Miyazawa. Nice to see this, because obviously the story itself has influenced other stories and anime, but I think this movie has too. |
| Night Wizard The Animation (TV) | Decent | I wonder why this was on my to-watch list. It looks like a generic school/fantasy anime. Well, not too generic then. It wasn't bad really, but the characters lacked personality. |
| Noir (TV) | Excellent | Another top anime. Great characters, intriguing story, cool soundtrack. The characters especially are good. You can't help but identify with/root for them, but at the same time all the cold-blooded killing is jarring. Too bad they killed Chloe and Altena in the end. I would've liked for them to have triumphed over the Soldats. Watching it for the second time, I find the development of Mireille & Kirika's friendship over time interesting. At first they're quite cold to each other, with Mireille threatening to kill Kirika a few times, but gradually they come to depend more on each other, and show that they care. Third time already? Wow. This time I noticed more that there's a lot of repeated or very slow animation, and the soundtrack, while it has some cool pieces, also has some meh parts. Still bleh that Altena and Chloe weren't more likeable, and the Soldats bigwigs survived at the end instead of them. |
| Non Non Biyori (TV) | Excellent | Wow, this is very slice-of-life ^_^ Pretty, and so relaxed you'd fall over if you'd relax any more. And it's not super moe, yay :) The OVA isn't in the ANNCylopedia, but it's cute as well. |
| Non Non Biyori Nonstop (TV 3) | Good | And here we go with S3. Huh, I thought the new character was going to be someone ~Renge's age, not a highschooler. Ep.2 preview shows her again too :? Ah, it's two new characters, Shiori, who's a year younger than Renge, and Akane, who's the same age as Hikage and a year younger than Konomi (and attends the same highschool). Konomi also shows up more of course. This season feels a little different from the previous two, but that's to be expected since those covered the same year actually. Otherwise it's still the same Non Non Biyori. Not a lot of animation, but pretty scenery. Appropriately (for maybe the final season? not sure) it ends with a graduation. I like how this anime shows kids (and some adults) of very different ages hanging out together. You don't see that very often in anime. At most it's two years difference or so, not like 14. Not super fond of this season repeating Natsumi & Hikage getting in trouble. It was an okayish gag once, but three times (or so) is a little too much. |
| Non Non Biyori Repeat (TV 2) | Excellent | First ep. of this season takes place before the start of the first season. Are we getting a Hidamari Sketch / ×365-style interlacing? Appears that way, but unlike Hidamari Sketch no dates are mentioned or shown here, so you can only guess by the holidays and seasons. The OVA (not in the ANNCyclopedia) consists of short stories from all four seasons. They're cute ^_^ |
| Non Non Biyori Vacation (movie) | Very good | Ah, another lovely Non Non Biyori entry. Okinawa looks really nice. Is it me, or did it look like Natsumi felt more for Aoi than just friendship? Anyways, with this the year covered by NNB, NNB Repeat and this movie is over. Next up is a new year in Nonstop. |
| Nurse Angel Ririka SOS (TV) | Weak | Might be an interesting variation on the magical girl genre? (link) Well, so far it looks like a poor imitation of Sailor Moon. Obnoxious childhood love interest, heroine needs to be told what to do or think by male mentor, the character types are very '90s. And the transformation/attack phrases are very Engrish. "Angel Aid Bomb Beam".. can't help but snort every time that one comes up. Ep.12. Blegh. Obnoxious brat gets promoted to 'team member'. I was hoping he'd get written out of our misery instead. And of course after he gets powered up Ririka needs saved all the time. Mentor love interest is killed off for real too, so we'll probably be stuck with obnoxious brat for the rest of the anime. It feels weird that Ririka has to transform to be able to fight, and needs to shout attack phrases, while obnoxious brat can just teleport or energy blast whenever he likes. Every male character telling Ririka what to do or feel or think is getting on my nerves. It's not just dead-for-real mentor and obnoxious brat, but all guys, from her little brother to neighbors. So frustrating that she's not allowed to just kill them all. Huh. What looks like the final battle in eps.25-26, with mentor love interest again disappearing, now back to his world (which was supposed to be dead) for no apparent reason. 9 eps. before the end we suddenly get a new character too. This last part is pretty meh in general. The new character appears only a few eps., the older heel-face turned comrade also kinda goes missing, and several eps. are basically MotW filler, this late in the series. Then the last ep. tries to turn the drama up to eleven, but it's really too much told not shown to take seriously. The ending is weird. First we get all the drama about Ririka dying for everyone, then at the end one single line that she's still alive after all, without any explanation or epilogue. Well, in general, this anime is really pretty bad. Unless I misremember, it doesn't even pass the Bechdel test (or if it does, it's on a minor technicality), which for a magical girl anime is just unbelievable. |
| Nyaruko: Crawling with Love! (TV) | Not really good | Yeah, Nyarlathoteps are aliens here. And the subbers didn't bother to check their sources, calling a shantak a shantaa :( Looks like it's going to be mostly a magical girlfriend comedy, with a few Lovecraft refs sprinkled in. Specifically the COC tabletalk game. Well, aside from occasional references this is just random nonsense comedy with some ecchi hints and otaku references thrown in now and then as extras. The subbers didn't know how to spell Hastur either, spelling it as Hasuta most of the time. Leaning toward disappointed half way through. Yeah, that was mostly disappointing, waiting for the Lovecraft refs now and then while watching a boring comedy. Well, I guess I can watch S2 as well just for completeness. |
| Nyaruko: Crawling with Love! (TV 2) | Not really good | Hmm, at least the art has improved a little in S2. Or maybe they just spent half the budget on ep.1. The refs to otaku stuff fly by really fast, with occasionally even some Lovecraft refs. I didn't get that third Nyarlathotep ref though.. :? Let's hope this season has more of a plot. Hmm, the animation budget seems to hold for ep.2. Not only does the art look better, there's more movement and action too. Too bad about the Derleth stuff :/ Oh, btw, figured out why Hasuta and Shantaa are spelled that way in the subs. It's because the Japanese spelling uses 太 as pun in their names. The on-screen English text uses Hastur and Shantak though.. Yeah, this season was better technically than S1. Still just a huge pile of references to otaku stuff that includes some Lovecraft ones here and there. The romcom base is more annoying than endearing really in how the characters are forever stuck in the same status quo. As for the Lovecraft references, this is about as indirect as Demonbane was. A bit more open about referring to the tabletalk game's version of the Lovecraft mythos though. I'm not sure this was (part of) the cause of the game's popularity, more likely it was the other way around. It might've helped boost/maintain that though. It might be an example of the general attitude toward the mythos and game in Japanese media too: mostly silly fun and memes. |
| O-jii-san no Lamp (movie) | So-so | Seems a little farfetched that a village would go from not having any kind of lamps to electric lighting in less than one generation, at first, but this is explained by the Meiji Restoration almost coinciding with the advent of electric lighting. Not a really interesting story, just a bit of historical drama. |
| Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror (movie) | Decent | Another one of those 'not sure why I put it here' anime. The 3D is hi-res, but movements are clumsy sometimes. The plot is very predictable most of the time. At least Haruka is (partly) self-rescuing. Well, in the end it was okay. Enjoyable enough, if a bit childish, but not really worth watching more than once. The animation has good and lesser sides. The plot isn't great, but enough for this movie. |
| Ocean Waves (movie) | Decent | A nice how-I-met- story. Told from the boy's perspective, so we don't really get to know the girl, even though it's mostly about her. It's nice enough, no annoying moments, but not all that much happens really. |
| Oh My Goddess! (OAV) | Good | :) It's nice to see the goddesses and Keiichi again. So far, these OVA episodes seem to be much like those from the TV series, except they leave a lot of details out and move the romance along quicker. Hmm, I guess that means they're not all that much alike actually. Well, anyway, that's what it reminds me of because I saw the TV series first. The art here is a little more detailed in places (mostly the characters), but the animation isn't as smooth. The OVA is about twelve years older than the TV series after all. After seeing all of this OVA I can't say I saw anything new that wasn't in the TV series. The last two eps. mixed things up a very little bit by combining two stories (one about Keiichi and Belldandy getting each other presents for Christmas, and one about Belldandy having to leave), but the few details that are OVA-original are there to make do without all the background that is present in the manga or TV series. Overall, I'd recommend this OVA only to hardcore or completionist fans of the franchise. Casual fans can watch the TV series without worry that they're missing anything. |
| Ojamajo Doremi (TV) | Very good | Only low-res hardsubs are available it seems. At least it's only the first several eps. that are very low-res. And so we start a new magical girl anime. Looks like this is more old-school, non-sentai. It's interesting to see how this has influenced PreCure. The school that the girls attend looks quite similar to the one in Splash Star. And Smile's Miyuki has several mannerisms in common with Doremi. I love that Hazuki's a yuri fan ^_^ Hmm, an unexpectedly dramatic (in a good way) finale, then a reset ending? That's kinda disappointing. I wonder how they'll fix that in #. |
| Ojamajo Doremi # (TV) | Very good | And just like that, it's all taken care of. Instant return of witch apprenticeship, just add a baby. Or something like that. Hmm, ep.2 got surprisingly serious discussing (briefly, but still) depression and suicide. What I like about Ojamajo is that there are lots of recurring secondary characters. It makes the setting come alive much more than having almost no recurring extras. Ep.20 again touches briefly on some serious stuff; miscarriage this time. Interesting change from the usual light-heartedness in anime like this. And after the movie (between ep.21/22) we get some larger plot going, with the mid-season upgrade. Unfortunately, the creepy old guy is back too, and they even added some annoying young guys :( Ojamajo is pretty good at continuity in general. There are little references back to earlier events all the time. Pity that Toei ditched that in later PreCure seasons. The finale goes a little weird. Ep.47 has the climax and solution, then there's two more eps. to fill? I guess they needed another definitive (but not really) ending like the first season. I wonder what excuse S3 will start with. |

| Ojamajo Doremi DOKKAAN! (TV) | Good | And once again they find a way to not let the gang become witches. I wonder if Pop will finish her exams before Hana. Oh noes, it's those Flat 4 guys again :( Hmm. Not so sure I like Pao. She's a little too much and too sudden, it just feels a little fake. Are the face-faults more extreme than before? Feels that way. Well, what do you know, Pop did show up again, and she got to do her rank 1 exam before Hana. For no reason actually. The other girls did their rank 1 all at once, so why not Pop and Hana? Then Pop passed the exam, but suddenly there's an unspecified other thing she must do before becoming a witch.Huh? The others never had to do that before becoming witches. Basically, we got to see Pop again for one episode, but the status quo hasn't actually changed. Meh. I don't like how this season so many characters have disappeared into the background who were more important before. It's understandable that they have to make some room for the new ones, but it feels like a little too much. It's not Hana's fault. Like Onpu and Momoko before her she merges into the team pretty well (although she matured a little too quickly to be entirely believeable). And it's not just the secondary characters either. It feels like we hardly hear or see from Aiko and Hazuki as well. Even the every-so-often plot progression bits (weaving cloth this season) feel rushed. Maybe there's just too many characters to do them all justice? Hana does get a lot of screentime. Ep.46 was weird. Finally everything's done, and now they suddenly bring up that the girls will live as long as regular witches if they become witches. That was never mentioned before, even though they graduated several times already. I hope they don't go for the reset ending yet again. Well, at least Pop got to graduate along with everyone else. Strange though that Hana is to become Queen right away :/ Well, that ended a little disappointingly. And the ending was too drawn-out. Eps. 49 and 51 could've been left out easily. This season I wasn't worried so much about the troubles the girls got into, but about how the writers would mess up the story. Kind of explains how I felt about this season. The overall story was okay, even Hana, but the ending sucked (and contradicted earlier events) and the focus was too much on Doremi and Hana. Makes me wonder though how the manga continued things. This ending closed off any kind of sequel quite resolutely. Maybe they declared S4 non-canon? |
| Ojamajo Doremi Na-i-sho (OAV) | Good | Hmm. It feels like something's different in this OVA. Voices, art and behavior are just a little off. Maybe it's me, but it feels like this OVA is doing more and more silly jokes, at the expense of more serious stories. Well, there were some more serious stories too. The art style here is definitely a little more deformed/silly than the previous seasons though. The last two eps. go a little beyond the established canon I think, but they're nice anyway. |
| Ojamajo Doremi: Owarai Gekijō (ONA) | Decent | Oh, looks like this finally got an ANNcyclopedia entry. Nice try, but it's really just milking the nostalgia cow. And using the Na·i·sho manga style too, which I don't like much. |
| Ōkii Ichinensei to Chiisana Ninensei (movie) | Good | Not sure if this is aimed at kids or adults. For adults the plot isn't very interesting, but some of the things the kids say make them sound a little older than they're supposed to be. Cute, but not really something that'd capture the attention of anyone over 4 years old. |
| Okko's Inn (movie) | Decent | The opening is weird. Did Okko's parents die or not? The scene of the accident shows they didn't, but then the story continues as if they have :? Huh, the movie is kinda different from the TV series., what with Okko's daydreaming about her parents all the time. Ooh, first time I've seen glasses that look like actual prescription glasses instead of like empty frames. Hmm, a lot of the TV series' story arcs were cut out or shortened, but at the same time they tried to up the drama with Okko's parents, and add some bookends like the dance and the other survivor of that accident. Uribo, Miyo and Suzuki are almost sidelined (even more than in the TV series), while Glory gets a larger role. Matsuki doesn't have much of a role either. It sort of works, but not quite perfectly. On one hand it's a decent, though shortish movie, on the other hand things grate a little where details are both left out and crammed in. Overall, it's okay I guess. |
| Okusama wa Maho Shojo (TV) | Weak | Argh, what's with all the fanservice lately? Ureshiko acts so coquettish even oversexed teenagers would find it too much. Pity really, because the premise of this anime, an adult magical girl who doesn't want to give up her 'job', is an interesting and refreshing take on the genre. Hmm, this is certainly a complicated dilemma that Ureshiko faces. Choose her job and she loses out on love, choose love and she has to give up her job. Either way she will have a part of her life curtailed. A forced choice that of course would never happen to a man. I really hope this anime will end differently, but fear that won't happen. Well, the fanservice at least got a lot less after the beginning fortunately. The conclusion however ended up framing Ureshiko's dilemma as passing on the 'job' (ring) to her successor. In itself it is not a bad thing to tell a story about elders making way for a new generation. It is however a bad thing to portray a woman as 'retiring' from playing an active role in the world upon getting engaged to a man (who btw continues his career the same as ever). I liked how this anime took a different point of view on an established genre. I didn't like how it started off with so much fanservice though. Most of all I didn't like how it reinforces stifling gender roles. |
| Omishi Magical Theater Risky Safety (TV) | So-so | 10 min. eps. are very short. The focus wanders a bit, and neither the comedy nor the drama are very engaging. The ending is decent, but that is as compared to the rest of this anime. This wasn't completely bad, but I could've spent my time better. Second time: It's hard to really call this anime bad or good. It isn't bad really, but it's a bit too lukewarm to call good. It's nice though, entertaining. |
| On Your Mark (movie) | Decent | Short movie that I came across by accident. It's not long enough to give all the details of the story, more like an animated music video. It is Miyazaki/Ghibli though, so the quality is quite good, and there's lots of flying, and the character designs are similar to those from other Ghibli movies. |
| One Off (OAV) | Good | "Round Table feat. Nino". That sets the mood the right way ^_^ Gee, I wonder if this was sponsored by Honda.. Lol. It could hardly be more obvious if it were a straight commercial. It's a nice slice-of-life anime, well made too, but the Honda advertisement is laid on a little too thick. Oh, it's Junichi Satou directing. Of course, that's why everything looks so familiar (like Tamayura and Aria). Ep.3/4 was more straight Tamayura, what with the girls creating and singing their own song. |

| Only Yesterday (movie) | So-so | Well, this time I made it all the way through. I came close to giving up a few times though. The flashbacks were pretty uninteresting/annoying. I don't get why that stuff was presented as nostalgic. The romance felt pretty forced at the end too. Overall, not a movie I'd watch again. |

| Origin ~Spirits of the Past~ (movie) | Good | The theme is reminiscent of Nausicaä (although this movie has a male main character), but it is a lot sharper due to modern technology. The focus in this movie is on showing its world. This leads to very pretty visuals, but leaves the story rather underdeveloped. Toola in particular seemed to behave only as the (fast-paced) plot demanded, not very naturally. You would expect her to be surprised after waking up, and to hesitate and contemplate before deciding to switch sides. Instead, she instantly accepted her circumstances, became friends with Agito immediately, and switched sides in the blink of an eye. She didn't seem to have much evidence to base her second decision on especially. As a whole, it's definitely worth watching, but I think the director still needs to learn that visuals alone don't make a movie great. |
| Otherside Picnic (TV) | Very good | Yuri. Not sure about the post-apocalyptic setting I think I saw. Apparently it's some sort of alternate world where creepy urban legends come from? Anyways, proper ep. order according to Andrea: 1-3,5,6,4,8-12,7. Hmm, which to choose, SubsPlease (i.e. unedited Funi) or Commie? From ep.1, Commie seems to be based on Funi too, but of course it changes some stuff. Good is it has slightly better typesetting (although Funi has subbed OP/ED too at least), although it gets excessive with replicating the wriggling effect on the title card and uses JP name order. Bad is that it misspells Sorawo's name as Sorao. The monster's name is changed from slightly more cutesy ("wiggle-waggle") than the original ("kunekune") to less cutesy ("wriggler") than the original. Considering this anime's unsettling creepy vibe I think that's not really a bad choice. So, I guess I'll go with Commie this time? Anyways, the first ep. is nice, though as I said unsettling creepy. Lots of hints at later developments (Sorawo's blue-flaming eye, Toriko's see-through hand, Akari overhearing Sorawo & Toriko's convo, Toriko apparently finding guns lying around, the monsters seen from the elevator, the blue fungus growing from victims, etc.). Oh, ep.2 clarifies the eye and hand, and introduces Kozakura. The gayness keeps up, although so far it's mostly from Sorawo towards Toriko. The other direction is only gestures that are easily misread (which Sorawo of course does). Hmm, not sure about putting ep.4 after eps.5&6. There's the hat from ep.2 in the intro, but also some refs to apparently ep.4 :? Well, I'll stick with it for now. And finished. It's true that ep.7 had some details (the automatic rifles, the hat) that would place it after ep.12, though there was also some attempt to fit it after ep.6. I'm not sure why Andrea wanted to put ep.4 after ep.6 though. There too, there was some attempt to fit it into that place. So if you don't mind some continuity mistakes it'd probably make most sense to watch the eps. in broadcast order after all. ETA: I checked, and it seems I was mistaken about ep.4 since I can't find her mentioning it should go after ep.6 at all. Anyways, this was somewhat scary in places, but more unsettling/weird and thriller/action. Definitely quite gay too. Nothing's stated explicitly, but Akari/Nattsun are definitely a couple, and Sorawo/Toriko are pretty much too. I'm not sure about reading a manga or LN version, but this anime was pretty good. |
| Otogi Zoshi (TV) | Excellent | The first (Heian) arc (13 eps.) was awesome. Just totally awesome. Characters, story, art, everything was great. Even if the second half would be a failure, I'd still buy this anime. The second (Tokyo) arc (11 eps.) was rather different. It reminds me a lot of Ghost Hunt: a group of friends investigating supernatural phenomena. It's not as full of action as the first half, but nonetheless quite good. Episode 25 was a short story about Urabe, set before the rest of the Tokyo arc. I think it could have fit as ep. 14 quite well, as it doesn't contain any spoilers for the rest of the anime. The last episode was all philosophical rambling by Mansairaku. The only bit of closure it provides is the observation that he is a guardian spirit of the city, otherwise it should've been left out entirely. All in all this goes immediately high on my to-buy list. |
| Otona Joshi no Anime Time (TV) | Decent | Reminds me a little of Diamond Daydreams, except shorter and with less resolution. Really slice-of-life that way. Not really special, but it's short enough that it doesn't matter. Nice to see some adults in anime. |
| Otona Joshi no Anime Time (TV 2) | Decent | More eps. The first one is a curious mix of animation and live action. Ep.2 is another one without a conclusion, which feels appropriate. And the third ep. was rather depressing. Overall this anime is sort of mildly interesting in being different from the usual fare, but I can't call it fun. |
| Our Home's Fox Deity (TV) | Good | I don't remember why I added this to the to-watch list. Fox spirits are kinda interesting, but this seems to be going for the harem genre, what with both Kuugen and Kou following Tooru and Noboru home. Oh, it seems it's going to be more about the spirit thing after all. Good :) Hmm, stupid fanservice keeps rearing its head from time to time, but it's mostly overshadowed by the fun supernatural stuff. Teenagers who are oblivious or can't spit it out are annoying though. The two eps. before the last are bad. There is no character development for anyone except maybe Kuugen and Tama. All in all this anime has some very good parts, but the bad parts drag it down to merely above average. |
| Outlaw Star (TV) | Weak | This is a cool action series. Unfortunately, it is also all about Gene Starwind, an arrogant, obnoxious asshole, who the rest of the crew, despite being treated rudely or ignored altogether, still treat as a hero (the story does too). If Gene's character was removed from the series completely it would have been a lot more fun and interesting. Melfina's character could do with some more backbone too. She's nice, but too nice even when threatened or hurt. Near the end of the series there seems to be an art shift, not for the better. |
| Pale Cocoon (OAV) | Decent | The synopsis didn't seem all that great, but it gets praised regularly, and it's only 23min. long anyway. Also, made by Yasuhiro Yoshiura and Studio Rikka, of Time Of Eve fame. As a short story, it's kinda hard to make sense of it at first. All in all, it's mostly world building and atmosphere. The world is kinda sad, being post-apocalyptic, and the atmosphere is vague and mostly indifferent, until the ending, when it shows a little hope. Overall, it's interesting as part of Yasuhiro Yoshiura's work, but not really great. |
| Pan de Peace! (TV) | Decent | Saw some silly subs tweeted, so since it's super short (3min. per ep. minus 30s OP) I decided to give it a try. Turns out those subs were icky joke subs though, but even with the real ones it's funny. Well, mildly funny at least. It's very cutesy, and there's bread of course. |
