| Princess Connect! Re:Dive (TV) | Good | Seems to be good. Made Andrea's top15 of 2020. S2 already announced though. Hmm, not so sure I like Kokkoro apparently devoting her entire life to this random guy for no reason. It's mostly a "don't worry about the details it's all comedy" story so far though, so I guess we'll see where it goes. (btw, what's up with Itou Miku playing Kokoro (BanDori), Kokkoro (PriConne) and Kukuru (Aquatope)? weird kind of typecasting?) It takes until ep.6 for the plot to get going, which is a tad long for a 13 ep. series I think. Oh, it only lasted 2 eps. Ep.8 and 9 are back to the usual slice-of-life comedy stuff. What's up with the setting btw? It looks standard fantasy European medieval, but there are also modern items like thermos flasks, inflatable plastic pool rings and sunglasses. Either a lot of people didn't think about this at all, or they're very clumsily hinting something's off about this world (as if the Ameth scenes and Shadows didn't do that better already). Finished. Oh, so it was a game originally. That explains the slow and fast pacing (RPGs are like that), and the oodles of characters that appear and don't play much of a role, and the very game-like setting that doesn't get justified the way it would if this weren't actually a game. It's a good thing a season 2 has been announced by now or this would just be another example of "play the game/read the manga to get some answers to all the questions this anime leaves you with". Still, it was entertaining, the characters were nice, and the animation&art quite pretty. So let's watch season 2 as well and hope it explains more. |
| Princess Jellyfish (TV) | Excellent | Hmm, those are some pretty geeky characters allright. I'm not sure I like where Kuranosuke is going with them though. I don't know what it is, but Tsukimi and Kura* are just so cute. Even Shu has some endearing moments. Hmm, the ending was slightly inconclusive (although that's to be expected if the manga hasn't finished yet), but otherwise this turned out to be a really great anime. I didn't expect that from something categorized as josei. |
| Princess Minerva (OAV) | Decent | Old, but all female cast apparently, and it's a prequel to the SNES game. Well, you can't call it a panty shot if they're only wearing bikini outfits I suppose. For some reason all the women of the main cast wear them, now and then augmented with some shoulder armor or a cape. The few men are fully clothed. It's an interesting group they end up with, should make a versatile RPG party. At 43min. there isn't too deep a plot, it seems to be mostly an introduction for the game. |
| Princess Mononoke (movie) | Very good | A really cool movie, but it would've been better without Ashitaka. As it is it's too much "two hotheaded women fight and a sensible man saves them". Bleh. The art & animation is really good of course. I think I'll replace the DVD with a BD anyway even though this one didn't skip or hiccup. I hope the Japanese release has a better translation (it wasn't bad, but there were still a few spots where I noticed it missed details or changed what was said). |
| Princess Principal (TV) | Very good | Yuri according to Andrea. Series of sequel movies announced for 2020-. F*in anachronic order again >:( Correct order should be 2-3-5-4-8-1-6-7-9-10-11-12 for the BD sourced versions (switch 6←→7 and 8←→9 for the broadcast sourced versions). I'm not usually a fan of steampunk, but this was pretty cool. Not sure I'd call it yuri, but it's easy to see it that way. Most episodes have a lot of background on each of the girls (only Beatrice doesn't get much beyond her introduction), except for the last three. Zelda is added as nemesis a bit too sudden though. She felt too forceful to be believeable among the otherwise quite subtle cast. Anyways, recommended, and I look forward to the sequel(s) next year. I hope the movie format doesn't hinder an ongoing plot. |
| Princess Tutu (TV) | Very good | Ahiru is cuute! ^_^ I like the way she sounds duck-like even when she's speaking normally. This anime is a really nice take on the magical girl genre. It combines fairytales with ballet, making it quite unique. Although it was a little deeper, I'm not sure the second half of the series was as good as the first. It was a little chaotic at times. |

| Project A-ko (movie) | Weak | Yet another anime that was reported to have some shoujo-ai. It's there, sort of, but the characters are so lacking in depth that I never actually cared for them. Shiko is an annoying (I wanted her to die from the first five minutes) crybaby who is protected by her friend Eiko. For no apparent reason, Eiko has superhuman strength. There's also Biiko, who for no apparent reason wants to defeat Eiko and steal Shiko away from her. Yep, that's the plot. Oh, there are also aliens who kidnap Shiko, again for no apparent reason. The art style is Ranma ½ meets SDF Macross, the music is 80s synth-pop. All in all I'd say this isn't really worth watching. I didn't bother with the three sequels, the last two of which apparently turn the girls straight anyway. |
| Psycho-Pass (TV) | Decent | This got good reviews. I'm not completely convinced on the setting, but maybe it's worth watching. S2 also got listed by Friedman as #3 of 2015 yuri anime. Hmm, it's pretty dark, and not just literally. Will this be GitS:darker&edgier? If this is supposed to be set in 2098 then it's not very convincing to have everyone over 25 treat the internet as a complete enigma like it's 2000. There's also a bit too much philosophy (with name-dropping) for my taste. GitS was also law enforcement in a cyberpunk setting, but it didn't wallow as much in being philosophical and shocking. Ep.6A ends the hunter arc, then ep.6B is suddenly a flashback showing Yayoi's past. Which leaves Shuusei and Shion the only unknown characters. Shuusei gets his very short flashback in ep.8B. As this series progresses, it focuses more and more on Kougami and less on Akane :( And in ep.10A we get some technobabble with all the philosophical wax. This anime's backstory doesn't really hold water. Well, near the end we did get a litle more Akane, but mostly it was still Kougami vs. Mishima. In the end nothing was changed about the system, and considering the rest of the series, the ending was kinda disappointing. Let's see if S2 improves things. |
| Psycho-Pass (movie) | So-so | Oh, it seems that S2 was so incoherent because it was by a different writer. And now Urobuchi is back for the movie. So, will this have the endless philosophy spouting and name dropping again? From the image on ANN it looks as if whatshisface, the black one from the spotlight-stealing angsty duo, comes back from being absent, and Akane gets promoted to action hero. It looks like they'll be playing up the romantic angle between Akane and whatshisface, plus the setting moves to SE-Asia. Way to leave the old setting unaffected? Philosophizing also comes back. We'll see how heavily. Hmm, not as badly as expected. It's pretty annoying how in movies the volume varies so much between quiet scenes and loud ones (plus when the BGM swells up). And of course you can't have a cyberpunk setting without a lot of darkness, which means you have to turn up the brightness/contrast too to see anything. Anyway, if this were a Western-made movie people would accuse it of white savior complex. Japan being the only place in the world with peace, a random Japanese police officer becoming leader of a guerilla group, the dictator begging Japan for help, it's not only farfetched, it's also rather arrogant. Well, at the end we got to see the rest of the team again for a few moments, but otherwise it was all just Akane and Kougami. Like Mika said, the whole plot wasn't really necessary to begin with. And it didn't change the status quo at all. As movies of TV series usually don't of course. On its own it was kinda meh. Not as much philosophy as S1, but still a lot, plus the action scenes were a bit uneven. A lot in the beginning, and very little at the end. |
| Psycho-Pass 2 (TV) | So-so | Last season's bad guy and two team members are gone, one demoted, and one promoted to outsider. This season adds three new team members to fill out the ranks. At least one of them is a woman so that balances things a bit. They've toned down the philosophizing and don't draw as much attention to the plotholes in the backstory, but in exchange they've also turned the gruesomeness way up. Oh, ep.8 has some infodumping (with plotholes) again. And finished. Well, it ended up being less nonsensical than I expected from the end of ep.8, but the ending still leaves a lot of things open. As for the yuri that was reported to be in this anime, I can't say I've seen much of it. There are two short scenes (one in S1, one in S2) that show Shion and Yayoi in bed together that imply a relationship, but nothing more than that is ever shown between them (they hardly interact at all). I just checked, and Friedman only put Psycho-Pass on her top ten lists because they're a couple and they don't die. Putting aside that it's a bit of a jump from those two scenes to calling them a couple, that's a disappointingly low bar for inclusion. |
| Pucchimiku D4DJ Petit Mix (TV) | Decent | Or as someone described it, Garupa Pico D4DJ version. That's basically it, short and silly vignettes of various characters. This one covers all the bands, even those which didn't appear (much) in the regular anime. Finally watched the last eps. Well, it wasn't bad, but not great either. Guess you'd have to play the game (or read its stories) to get more out of it. |
| Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) | Good | Character designs by Ume Aoki, music by Yuki Kajiura, .. This has got to be good ^_^ Whoa.. That's just so psychedelic. Whoever designed the visuals must've been on some really trippy mushrooms. Let's hope it doesn't turn into a bad trip. It did turn into a bad trip, but mostly for the characters. I think there were a few plot holes, but otherwise it was a decent, if a little short story. The ending was a welcome relief from the darkness of the rest of the series. |
| Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 1: Beginnings | Good | I think this follows the series quite closely. The total duration of the two movies is about the same as 12 eps. minus OP/ED and recaps too. |
| Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 2: Eternal | Good | Part 1 was mostly Sayaka's story, with Mami and Kyouko as extras. This part is mostly Homura's story, at least so far. Okay, Homura & Madoka's story. But I guess the whole series/set of movies is Madoka's story. The first half of this part is Homura's story, the second half is the ending. Yes, they stretch it out that long. There is some extra detail, and explanation of how Madoka came to be so powerful. Or maybe I just missed that aspect before. The extra parts also emphasise Madoka's messiah status more, so that's a bit meh. There was some filler too, the ending theme was repeated twice for example, and this movie was shorter than the first by about 20 minutes even so, so I guess it's more correct to say the first movie covers about 2/3 of the series. There was a short teaser for the third movie at the end, so I guess at least by the time the movies came out they planned to do a third one. |
| Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion | So-so | Okay, this movie is just weird. The ending of the series/second movie was kinda difficult to understand in parts, but this just never makes sense. As such, it feels like they were just trying to milk the cash cow a third time, not really add anything to the story (which was pretty much finished really). There are some cool battle scenes, but mostly it's just a whole lot of that weird artsy-fartsy scrapbook pseudo-animation. |

| R.O.D -The TV- | Very good | Pretty good. The OVA was a little over the top with the superheroics, but still enjoyable. I liked Yomiko Readman's cuteness, but her clumsiness was too exaggerated and made her more of a caricature. R.O.D. The TV was a lot better than the OVA. At first I thought it would be kinda silly, with the Paper Sisters' living with Nenene, but it got better quickly, even if the twists in the story were kinda abrupt sometimes. |
| Ray (TV) | Decent | Not a bad anime at all really, it's quite interesting, but you need to be able to ignore the abuse of biomedical science, because that's simply atrocious. Other than the main story and character, the characters are pretty flat and unexplained though. So it isn't actually great, just okay. |
| Re-Kan! (TV) | Decent | Came across this by coincidence. It looks kinda cute/funny? Well, it doesn't look very deep so far. I hope the pervy cat doesn't become a regular character.. Unfortunately that was too much to ask. I dunno, this anime is nice, but it's lacking something. It tries to be sweet and funny, but it just doesn't quite pull it off completely. Maybe it's the characters lacking depth? The cat and the two boys keep getting screentime despite their being not funny. There's some heavy hinting at Hibiki and Narumi being a couple, but nothing explicit. The characters get some depth, though not all, but the comedy and tragedy both keep not quite hitting it. That was also mentioned in the ANN review. It's nice, but not really memorable. |
| Re: Cutie Honey (OAV) | Weak | Fanservice gone wild = ecchi. Any excuse will do to strip the heroine (and many other women) of her clothes. The story is as flimsy as a random episode of Powerpuff Girls: villain wrecks city, heroine fights villain. The art shows a large American influence. Why did I watch crap like this? Because it was said to have some shoujo-ai in it. Isn't it sad that we have to stoop this low to find characters that remotely resemble lesbians? *sigh* At least the heroines do love eachother, even if they don't exactly say it. |
| Re:Stage! Dream Days (TV) | Decent | More idols. This one's gay according to Andrea. Hmm, it's only 12 eps. long, so I guess they have to speed up the getting the group together part a bit. The first ep. has two girls who are already really good at dancing&singing, so that cuts down on the practice time needed. I guess this is from a larger established franchise? There were several groups who didn't get much screentime but looked very well designed and developed. Ah, yes it is. No other anime were made, but a mobage, manga etc. were. Well, that was enjoyable. Not super great, but still enjoyable. The hints at gayness were subdued, but definitely there, with the six KiRaRe members clearly grouped into three pairs. |

| Real Drive (TV) | Very good | Oh, this looks very nice. Modern production and a nice tropical sea setting. The character design is a little peculiar, round-faced, sometimes even a little plump, and the women often have half-open pouty ('pornface') mouths. So far (2 eps. in) the story is still mysterious, but looks to be unconventional. Hmm, I wasn't expecting this much slice-of-lifeness in a (post-)cyberpunk setting, but it is not bad. Not bad at all. The scenery is very beautiful, the music varies from regular classical fare to catchy. Near the end, the overarching plot gets a little out there, but overall I'd rate this series close to Excellent actually. Second time: Hmm, it's not bad, but not as good as I remember. Like I said before, toward the end (from the jungle ep. on) the sci-fi/fantasy goes a little overboard. The villain's motivation wasn't really clear, both in opposing the main characters the way he did and in just giving up at the end. Feels a bit like the writers chickened out at the end. What irks me most though is the way Horon was treated as only a prop for Souta's development. She didn't need to die/reset at all for the plot really, it was just pointless drama. So overall I'd now rate it closer to merely Good. Well, let's keep it at Very Good then as an average. |
| Red Garden (TV) | Good | Listed on Friedman's Okazu blog as 'yuri'. Whoa, shockingly uncute art style. Not precisely ugly, more like realistic in ways that anime usually isn't. And there's a bit of musical too. The first ep. is quite intriguing. A mix of mystery, horror, and a little drama. And it's set in America. I suppose that goes well with the art style :P There's not much horror after the beginning though, just a lot of drama. Some of it is interesting, some of it so-so. I'd like to see a little more action maybe, or quicker development of the plot. Only in the last ep. is there more action again, and even then the emphasis is on drama. So my first impression of this being a horror anime was quite wrong. There's mystery, but that's not the focus really. The ending was a little open, but okay considering the 'facts' revealed earlier. Overall, it is a good, well-made anime, but I don't think it's one I must own. |
| RedAsh -GEARWORLD- (movie) | So-so | Anime Tamago 2017. A bit confusingly named. Originally titled "-Magicicada-", it was changed to "-Gearworld-", but somehow the actual anime still shows the old title :? Anyways, it seems this is part of a game project that got crowdfunded a while ago (the last ~1min. is the list of backers). This anime is the introduction story I guess. It has an obvious "to be continued" ending. Probably because of the international crowdfunding, it also had English subs on the BD, though they're not without mistakes ("breaks" instead of "brakes"). The art style is 3D, but with an unusual rendering. Not the common "cel" style, but not quite realistic either. It looks kinda game-like in fact. Otherwise, I dunno, it's not bad, but it's clearly just the opening of something larger. Beck aka Red Ash is so obviously the Hero (capital H), the others are support characters. Call (yah, the names are a little meh) is the spunky love interest/sidekick who doesn't get in the way unless the writers make her. So, all in all, not really great. |
| Rental Magica (TV) | Good | It seems this anime also aired out of order, but fortunately, the filenames contain the correct order. So far it looks, okay. During the series I felt better about it. It's like a bunch of short stories, each going deeper into some characters' backgrounds. The ending was again a little off. The villain was hard to understand, and the climax lacked resolution. The final episode was also kinda meh. I could see the twist coming from the start, and because Itsuki's explanation for interrupting the ceremony was rather insufficient, it smelled a little of homophobia. Which isn't a good feeling to end a series that was already teetering on not good enough. |
| Requiem from the Darkness (TV) | Good | Oh, this looks interesting. An unusual art style. It reminds me of European comics. The supernatural trio remind me of the main characters of Hell Girl, but I can't find any actual connection between the two anime. This anime is pretty good, although it really doesn't shy away from nastiness. |
| Restaurant to Another World (TV) | Very good | Slice-of-life/supernatural. Review indicates it's not great, but moderately entertaining. Hmm, the first ep. looked nice. It's just introduction of the characters, but nice enough. From the review it seemed we never learn much more about them, which would be kinda disappointing with such an interesting concept. Hmm, so basically, every ep. showcases two guests of the restaurant. None of them seem to be related, although I get the impression some of them live in the same worlds. Hey, that ended up being quite enjoyable. A nice relaxing anime without any conflict (or not between the portrayed characters anyway). There are hints of ero-poi eating now and then, but it's nowhere near Koufuku Graffiti's level. Turns out the characters all live in the same world after all btw. Well, except for the restaurant and its owner of course, although even his grandma was from the other world. We don't learn very much about each character, but between them we learn a bit about the other world's structure and history. |
| Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV) | Weak | This goes from making little sense to not making sense at all to being boring and disappointing. It's also very formulaic, constantly reusing parts of the storyline along with their animation and music. There are also no less than three clip episodes. There are lots of girls who, given a mere look from one of several obnoxious playboys, swoon and throw themselves at their feet. At first it looks like Utena is going to be different from those girls, but in the end she can't withstand the boys' looks and behavior either. The other main character, Anthy, has the kind of personality the average doormat would sneer at. And she's blamed for it too. All in all it's no small feat that I actually finished this long series. |

| Revue Starlight (TV) | Good | Highly recommended by Ritsu. Well, that first ep. was.. pretty weird. Very strong Utena/Penguindrum/Yuri Kuma Arashi vibes now and then, but I've heard that's not what it'll be like. I'll give it a chance, but I'm not really sold on the whole stage-acting thing yet. Ep.2 didn't really make things much clearer. It all looks cool (although the setting is kinda empty), but I've no idea what's going on or why. I feel like with each ep. this anime is making less sense. Is this maybe one of those anime that people call 'deep' or 'symbolic' without being able to explain? That would fit right in with the surreal Utena etc. etc. feel :? Hmm, ep.4 was kinda nice, showing all of the characters being themselves, without the giraffe contest. They should've opened with something like this. By ep.5 it's finally beginning to grow on me. The characters are nice, but the whole giraffe contest thing still doesn't make sense. The battle scenes seem to be best taken as Looney Tunes-style "anything can happen, just because it's fun/looks cool" interludes. Looks like this template of "character or couple doubt themself/get frustrated with eachother, argue, realize what they should do, then act out the last half of the argument/make up in a stage battle, HEA" can continue for several more eps. Daiba Homura? I was wondering why they only now got to some backstory, but this is certainly an unexpected and interesting way to frame it. And again with the flashbacks in ep.8. It's not in completely random order, but I think this anime would make sense a lot quicker if they'd stuck to a more chronological order. And that's most of the backstory finished I think. Back to the present with the two girls we haven't seen much of yet, then the finale where they stick it to the giraffe. Or something like that. That ribbon on its tail just reminds me of Eeyore's :þ Uh oh. Bad End? I hope someone saved before the last battle. It looked like there wasn't a savepoint after it. Ah, I see. They're extending the anime by two eps. with this extra drama. Begs the questions of why no one noticed the diff between the book and the play before, and why they didn't check the elevator first thing. They totally nicked that phone thing from Yorimoi btw. And that was the last ep. of #RevueStarlight. With the ending we kinda expected from the start*, except more convoluted and slightly less spectacular. The giraffe and setting still haven't been explained though ^_^; (* To be fair, that expectation was based on some vague memory of a review saying something about the girls escaping their fate or something. Doesn't take a genius to figure out that the exit is through giving the tragedy a happy end though.) Overall, it was a nice anime. I don't think it'll be one of my favorites, but it was nice. Bananaisu if you want (^_^)_v Kidding aside, good points were the visual polish, the cool battles (although they were pretty short) and the bananicely gay characters. Minus points would be learning what is going on only halfway through flashbacks instead of in chronological order (sure, it has more impact that way, but only because you confused the viewer in the first place), not enough interaction between the characters outside the story (okay, that can be saved for the slice-of-life spinoff I guess), and the giraffe and the point of the battles/magical stage not being explained. Okay, I guess I'll go check out Andrea's writeup now. Rumor has it she understands. Ah, so the giraffe is just an audience stand-in, and the magical stage battles are a metaphor for the Takarazuka's Top Star system. Well, it's still a metaphor after all, but I guess it's understandable in this case. |
| Rhea Gall Force (OAV) | Not really good | It's related to the earlie movies, but so far there's no space battles. Well, a battle for space maybe. And a rather desperate one too. Let's see if the next installment is back in space. |
| Rideback (TV) | Good | The action parts are pretty cool, but the characters are rather flat. I can't quite tell where the plot is going yet. Well, that ended up being quite good. It felt rather rushed at times, but in the end it was a pretty good story with believable characters. |
| RIN - Daughters of Mnemosyne (TV) | Not really good | Oy, lots of violence here, of the bloody kind. And lots of fanservice too, of the explicit kind. The story is intriguing though, and at 45 minutes per episode it's almost as long as a regular half-season anime. It's a pity that the fanservice is so extreme (it's almost porn at times), because the mysteries and science fiction are really interesting. The bad aspects completely overshadow the good ones though. The symbolism of the interactions between the main characters and their opponents is just disgusting in so many ways. |
| Rinne no Lagrange: Kamogawa Days (OAV) | Good | This is just an intermezzo between the two 'seasons'. It's completely slice-of-life; no story progress is made, it just shows the main characters going about their lives. |
| Robot Carnival (OAV) | So-so | Several short movies in one, by different directors. Goes with the Ani-Kuri 15, Japan Animator Expo, Anime Mirai theme? Wow, old anime looks old. In some ways the art is impressive, in other ways it doesn't look very refined. And the stories are just short sketches of stories really. With some questionable tropes like the kidnapped women in parts 3 and 5. Overall, like those other collections, it's pretty mixed. About all you can say for this is that it's cel-animated and has some interesting art. The stories aren't so great though. |
| Rocket Girls (TV) | Very good | Wow, the first episodes are totally weird. This is going to be fun ^_^ Yay, Yukari made it! \o/ But, oops.. Akane is too cute ^_^ The ending was a little abrupt, but that's okay. I think this anime goes on the to-buy list :) |
| (The) Rolling Girls (TV) | Good | Well, it didn't get very good reviews, but Tricky won't stop gushing about gay moms, so I guess I should check it out.. Oh, this looks very colorful. And the main characters seem pretty likeable too. I can feel the shipping potential. Wait, did they just write one of the main characters out of the story and introduce three new ones? Anyways, these subs suck. Typesetting is okay (or was for the first ep. at least), but the translation is typical Commie style of making up new key terms everywhere for no reason. Ah, Cthune's subs are better. So it's a road trip story, with the girls visiting all these prefectures (or provinces?) looking for these magical stones (of which they still haven't collected any five eps. in), then getting caught up in local shenanigans also involving said stones, before moving on again. Road trip stories aren't generally my favorite genre, but ah well, as long as it stays cute and colorful I can watch it. Wow, that was a long break I took after ep.10. Finally got back and finished it though. After a bunch of somewhat unconnected parts of the roadtrip, the last part takes up eps.9-12 and also finishes the story. The earlier parts don't do much to progress the overall story, which means the backstory and resolution are all crammed in just the last four eps. Which makes it a bit hard to follow now and then ^_^; I dunno. There are lots of cute and strong girls who are best friends or more with other strong and cute girls, and there's plenty of action and comedy too, but overall it's a little unbalanced. The early parts are very calm, plotwise, and then the last part is very heavy, and the ending is, well, it kinda fits with the earlier parts in an everything is okay and peaceful again way, but it's a little unsatifying like that. There wasn't really a reason for Chiaya to leave her friends (especially since that Otomo/professor guy didn't leave, and Chiaya had defied her mom already). I really liked most of the anime even if it didn't have a strong plot, but the ending is too frantic, and rather meh. I think I'll buy it on principle for the awesome characters, but I can't give it a super high rating. |
| Ronja the Robber's Daughter (TV) | Very good | I'd really like to watch this with Swedish audio (Japanese just isn't the same with such a classic), but can't find it anywhere. Someone on BakaBT mentioned they're going to release a version with Swedish audio, as recent as 2018-02-03, so hurry up ^_^ Was about to give up on it, but w00t! new version with Swedish audio get! The English subs are based on the Japanese audio, so they don't match exactly, but eh, nbd. Ep.1- Somehow I remembered the big thunderstorm happening while Ronja was being born, not after it. I also remember it being more dramatic, with the birdwitches (now 'harpies', but maybe that was always the English translation) cursing Ronja or something. The robbers wearing masks while robbing people is something new too I think. Ep.2- Did Ronja grow up this quickly? I mean, the story did skip ahead, but I don't recall it going this quickly. Ep.11- So far it doesn't seem too different from the book. I mean, I obviously only vaguely remember the story, but most of the bigger events are ones I remember. Only now and then there seem to be some added details. One think that looks strange is Ronja talking out loud to herself. It's clear she's just thinking, but it's weird that her mouth moves as if she's speaking out loud, even when she's trying to be quiet. Did Ronja & Birk agreeing to be siblings happen after she got stuck in the nisse hole? In this version it looked almost like an afterthough, and fairly one-sided from Ronja too. In general she appears to be kind of obsessed with Birk after that. Maybe it's just my age difference between reading the book and watching this :? One thing that's anime-specific is how it often cuts events in two half-eps. instead of one whole ep., with the other half of each being something smaller that could've been moved. Ep.13- Could definitely have done without the overly long men-in-dresses joke D: I don't remember that being in the original either, but it was a bit too long/detailed to be a quick addition. And that was all. Overall it was pretty good, and nice to see a favorite childhood story in animated form. Some details were a little different, or differently interpreted. Mattis wasn't so extremely volatile in the original I think. He'd shout a bit sometimes, but not these extremes of sorrow or rage. I guess some details had to be added to animate things though. Maybe I'll look up the book some time. |

| Rozen Maiden (TV) | Very good | I finished the game Rhapsody a short while ago, so the premise of dolls coming to life and fighting seemed very interesting and cute and cool. It's nice to see an anime that's suitable for everyone again. No annoying fanservice. The casual comedy contrasts a bit with the more serious Alice Game, but not too harshly. |

| Rozen Maiden: Träumend (TV) | Very good | More fun with the Rozen Maiden dolls. Two more dolls show up for the Alice Game, and Suigintou somehow comes back too. The comedy is just as cute, but the Alice Game fighting becomes more grim towards the end of this series. The ending I found a little disappointing. It's partly a reset ending, but adds some unanswered questions. It doesn't look like there'll be another series either :( |
| Rozen Maiden: Zurückspulen (TV) | Decent | It looks like the first ep. is meant to be a super quick reminder of the original series. It barely manages to introduce all the dolls though, let alone explain what's going on. If the rest of this anime builds on that it's definitely not something to watch without having watched the original anime first. Oh, this looks fun. Sort of partial reset of the original? Not sure how to describe it properly, but let's see where this goes. Focus is more on Jun & Shinku for now, not the other dolls. Huh? I was about to say not a lot happened in this anime in the end, but then in the last half ep. we get a huge sequel hook that makes this whole season feel more like a pilot for something much longer :/ Well, can't say it's really great this way. Up until that ending it was pretty good, although the plot was a bit tepid. With it though.. I dunno. |
| Rumiko Takahashi Anthology (TV) | Good | Mentioned in the SloL recommendations thread. Every episode is a separate story, unrelated to the others. In that way this anime reminds me a lot of Hell Girl, although this doesn't have all the hatred and sadness in it of course. The stories are interesting. Not really comedy, not really drama, often based on misunderstandings between characters. Usually the characters learn something from the events. |

| Ryoko's Case File (TV) | Very good | Ah, a good old crime-fighting detective story :) The mysteries are solved rather easily, but the art is pretty good (and the French fake). From ep.9 onwards the plot is continuous. Although not everything is believable, the action more than makes up for it. Highly recommended to fans of the supernatural and detective/secret agent genres. |
