| Short Peace (movie) | Decent | Anthology, discussed here. Possessions is 3DCG. Pretty good, but still noticeable in the character's movement. Hi No Youjin doesn't really have much of a story. Ganbo is medieval supernatural fighting; cool looking, but very gruesome. Buki Yo Saraba is urban combat. Very hi-tech confusion, with a wtf ending. The first and last ones had only male MCs, the other two, female secondary MCs at best. Overall, the animation is impressive, but except for the first part the stories were kinda meh. Worth watching only for the animation. |
| Show By Rock!! (TV) | Good | Ah, it looks cute. The CG segments are a bit weird, as is the manager. The ED looks almost like a CM for the figurines, and they're not shying away from a little fanservice now and then. Nothing too bad though so far. It really seems like K-On! meets Jewelpet. Cyan × Retoree and Retoree × Moa are nice ships ^_^ This anime was pretty good. Tsurezure was the best band, but Plasmagica wasn't bad either. ShinganCrimsonZ got way too much screentime for a comic relief group. I'm guessing there's more backstory and such in the games? Ah well. I might need to buy this. Second time. Lol, it's interesting to read my earlier comments from before I got into the music and game. Rewatching it now many details make more sense. This anime basically turns Cyan into an isekai heroine. The finale lays it on a little too thick. It's interesting to see which bands are or aren't in this season. You'd expect all the original (non-tie-up) bands, but Ninjinriot, Dolly Dolci, Studdobangash and Baiganba V don't appear except from being listed on a billboard. Shinimonogurui on the other hand has a tie-up artist, but appears anyway. They're the only ones though. And half of Shizuku Secret Mind doesn't appear either. Uwasa No Petals appears now and then, but never plays as a band. Neither do Shinimonogurui and Shizuku Secret Mind. The latter are introduced with their backstory, but Rom and Shuuzo's past is only hinted at. Moa's origin is revealed but doesn't get any more attention beyond that. It's nice to watch this again. I wish they'd included more songs though. There's some room for it even without hindering the story. |
| Show By Rock!! Mashumairesh!! (TV) | Good | Hmm, the first ep. didn't give us much excitement yet. Howan goes to the city, the other three hang out as a band, they meet. Well, let's give it time. Ep.2 still didn't have much excitement. Ep.3 got more rock with the introduction of DokoYubi. Yeah, I get why it's called Mashumairesh!!. That's basically what this season was about. The Cyan we were teased with in the announcement video showed up at the very end. Just a short cameo though. Hopefully the next season (Stars) will have more bands. |
| Show By Rock!! Short!! (TV) | Decent | Contrary to the synopsis on ANN, this series of shorts focuses on each band in turn. Basically a set of DVD extras. And finished it in one go. The Tokiko eps. are mostly bleh, some of the others are nice. Tsurezure best band ^_^ |
| Show By Rock!! Stars!! (TV) | Good | Yay, new SB69 ^_^ Mashumashu goes Shibuvalley, and gets into trouble. Jiipe appears as monster, Plasmagica just missed Mashumashu, and Rikao is called in to get them out of jail. From the ED it seems that only the first-class bands from the new game will appear, minus Zerotickholic and ¾ of Yokaze. I miss the old bands :/ Also, mini-SB69 Short 2 skit at the end of each ep. apparently, although the first one doesn't look very promising. Hmm, the second ep. spends basically its whole length on the court case. It's decent, but that's two eps. spent just on getting the two main bands together and hardly any plot development. If this is a short one quarter anime, that's a bit long, isn't it? the Short 2 ep. is all about Rikao. I feel like they could've spent that better on all of Yokazenohorizon. Oh, ep.3 was really good. They're really not hiding Howan&Himeko being a couple. Retoree&Cyan was still as one-sided as always. The Short ep. was nice this time. Looks like ep.4 will be about the boy bands again though :/ Oh, it was all about the boys as expected, but it actually had a decent plot. Still boy bands, but not as bad as I feared. The Short ep. was just boy band silliness. Ep.5 was Reijing vs. CriCri (nice), with a little bit of Shingos as Short (okayish), ep.6 had MashuMashu visit Tsurezure's themepark (nice), with the Short an ad video for it (kinda meh), ep.7 was Arcarea vs. DokoYubi (better than expected), with Titan's little brothers as Short (kinda meh). Ep.8 was again one of the better ones, with a joint MashuMashu × Plasmagica concert for the DevilmintKiryuu tribe, as expected it was all about Delmin, with Ruhuyu supporting. The Short was a funny fight between Delmin and Minpapa as imagined by Ruhuyu. Looks like ep.9 will pick up the plot again. Well, it didn't actually. Instead it was an all girls' bands sports festival ep. with Ailane going evil out of nowhere and Howan calming her down again. Nice to see BVL of course, but it felt like a let's quickly show off their darkness without explanation thing The Short was just CriCri recording an ad. Ep.10 was DokoYubi vs. ToraKuro, with Shuuzou making fun of the boss of Judas(& DokoYubi's school) in the Short, ep.11 was MashuMashu reminiscing about this season and getting ready for the finale/fes, with some classic Uwasanopetals Short (will they ever get outside their old school building? probably not). The finale felt pretty rushed. Jiipe (for some reason spelled as Ziipe by the official subs) turned out to be a Dark Monster, and most of the ep. was a concert to tame him. I was pretty disappointed that when Jiipe blasted MashuMashu, Howan wasn't the first person Himeko checked on. Major continuity error IMO. At the end Rameka showed up to explain Jiipe's origins, Jiipe went byebye, and then everything returned basically to status quo. Including MashuMashu going back to UNZ, and Jiipe showing up there as the fairy he is in the game (except it wasn't really a prequel to the game of course). Oh, and several of the bands not included in this season showed up in the crowd shots. Tsurezure was notably absent during the whole ep. though. This season had some good moments, especially ep.3, some parts that were okay, and some that were pretty meh. The Shorts were likewise hit and miss, although you can't expect as much there. The overall plot turned out to be basically nothing after all. No development, just showing all of the main bands (and none of the second class ones). Which makes it an okay enough season for the fans, but doesn't really draw new fans with a good story. |
| Show By Rock!!# (TV 2/2016) | Good | So in order to show things are serious, you flash forward to a future that the heroes want to prevent. Well, that's one way I guess. This season still wastes too much time on the boy bands. It's also starting to suffer from character overload. My favorite Tsurezure hardly gets any screentime :( The ending is pretty similar to the first season's. Everything's well again and then everyone's sad that Cyan goes back to the human world. Sanrio's approach to magical girls/worlds isn't really great. I kinda understand them wanting to emphasise that "anyone can connect to this magical world" (by buying our stuff), but it necessarily results in a sad ending when everyone ends up in their own world again. Anyways, SB69 isn't perfect, but it is fun. There are a lot of likeable characters, some pretty good music, and even the villains get redeemed. Maybe I'll look into buying it. |
| Shrine of the Morning Mist (TV) | Decent | Wow, this looks old. And a little silly. Ah well, the eps. are very short. Surprisingly, it turned out not to be a harem anime, and there's no fanservice at all. The short eps. make for a rather bare plot though, and the art isn't refined. |
| Shugo Chara! (TV) | Very good | Oh, this looks wonderful ^_^ Who said magical girl anime are all the same? This one's definitely cheekier than usual. Amu looks/acts like a mixture of Pretty Cure's Nagisa, Utena, and Nana's Hachiko. So cute ^_^ Nagehiko? o_o This is becoming a little too much like a harem anime now. I want more women, not more men :( Also, the blatant heterosexual overtones of the Humpty-Dumpty stuff are really weirding me out. It's icky creepy. Overall though, this is definitely one of the better magical girl anime. About as good as Pretty Cure, I'd say. In some ways it's not as good, in some ways it's better. |
| Shugo Chara!! Doki (TV) | Good | It feels as if this season has much less plot development than the first. Most episodes are just egg of the week without any plot progress. Well, it got a little better later on, but it was still uneven. Some episodes were really good, having important character or plot developments, then the story would be stalled again for a few. The conclusion, although it had a lot of flashy sparkles, wasn't really great either. Too many things were left unexplained until they were suddenly resolved without much effort. Overall this anime was still worth watching though. |
| Silent Möbius (TV) | Good | Why did I add this to the to-watch list again? Oh, the main characters are all women, I see. Wow, ancient art style. I hope the story will make sense, because the first episode didn't really. The story starts to make much more sense later on fortunately. Near the end it sped up and left a few small things unexplored, but overall it is quite well-constructed. Character development varies from okayish to excellent. It's good to see a group of adults anyway instead of the anime default teenagers. Second time watching this. Katsumi has that main character vibe, but most of the team get their own focus ep(s). Lum Cheng gets introduced awkwardly in ep.15 and promoted to opening image in ep.16. So far Katsumi, Kiddy and Yuki have been shown as straight (or at least not gay). Can't we just write those guys out of the story and have them all be one family? I didn't remember it being this heterocentric. Also ciscentric I guess; at the end it's repeated that AMP are all women because procreation. *sigh* |
| Simoun (TV) | Very good | I would describe this anime as 'bittersweet'. Very interesting was the understated portrayal of a society where everyone is female until about age 17, when they choose to become either male or female. Becoming an adult is one theme, but more prominent is the theme of war and its effects on those fighting. This series is however not about the war itself and which side wins or loses. The large cast was handled fairly well with most characters having clear personalities, even if it was at times obvious that characters were absent for no other reason than the writers requiring it. Despite the interesting setting though, I wasn't completely happy with it. I found it rather disappointing that the ending once again showed love between girls as somehow very pure, but ultimately a childish, immature form of love that can only exist outside reality. Stop reinforcing that stereotype already. Watched this a second time. Hmm, I guess my impression hasn't changed that much. The war thing is quite prominent at times, especially the first ⅔ or so. The mysteries of the Emerald Ri Maajon and the Spring are also there, though they don't quite get satisfying answers. Mostly it's about the drama of going to the Spring and choosing a sex, or not. I suppose Yun, Onashia, Dominura, Limone, Neviril and Aaeru could be seen as enby in that respect, and seeing their struggles as avoiding being forced to become female or male is an interesting way of watching this anime, but it kinda explicitly states everyone's female before choosing in this setting, so that doesn't quite fit easily. One early scene in ep.5 mentions other countries forcing children's choice of sex less magically, but it's never referred to again. I wonder if this was based on a manga that has more details. Oh, and the soundtrack is also interesting. A mix of orchestral and synth music. |
| Sisters of Wellber (TV) | So-so | It's.. okayish I'd say. Some of the animation isn't so good (CG are too noticeable for one thing), and the series starts off quite badly (hardly any introduction of the main characters, they're thrust into the quest almost immediately). After that it gets better slowly (although there's a little too much unnecessary exposition I think), with the last few eps. fairly good. It reminds me of El Cazador De La Bruja actually, although the humor is different. |
| Sisters of Wellber Zwei (TV) | So-so | Yay, it's finished subbing :) The animation is the same quality as the first season (not quite top), but I don't remember the writing being this clumsy. It feels like the story was written by an amateur (fanfic writer or something like that). Halfway through, the romance seems to have taken a path that it will be hard to return from with any credibility. And it's not very believable now either. The ending is kinda meh, as expected. |

| Skip Beat! (TV) | Very good | Since I backed the KS project for this anime I guess I should give this a try. Hey, the first ep. looks fun. Very shoujo style, but Kyouko's pretty cool so far. Oh, that got cut off pretty quickly. And now it looks like Kyouko will spend most of the anime groveling to get by. Okay, finished. I have to admit, this anime grew on me a lot. At first it was like Kyouko went from one embarrassing situation to another. That sort of humor isn't my thing at all. But it got better, and by the end I was even cheering for her and Ren. There is a lot of humor, even if some of it wasn't great. And Kyouko really is pretty cool. The only flaws of this anime (besides the straight romance, but like I said, I got over that) are 1) nearly all of the characters in authority or power are men, and nearly all of those who are not are women, which kinda fed into that embarrassing situations thing to make it really uncomfortable; even though that aspect lessened in the latter half, it doesn't completely erase the gender power imbalance; and 2) the story is clearly unfinished; the last ep. ends with Ren about to overcome his earlier trouble, and both Ren and Kyouko beginning to realize their feelings for eachother, but doesn't actually show either. I read someone say that another season might be made after the manga finishes (which it still hasn't I think), but the first season was 8 years ago, so that doesn't sound very believable. Still, it is a very good anime in this genre. Good enough that I'm disappointed to see it end. I think I'll increase my KS pledge after all. |
| Sky Girls (TV) | Decent | OP by Mell :) Urgh, did we really need to spend half an episode on a stupid breast size joke? :( Well, overall the story was not bad, the characters we're also okayish, and the action was also okay. The fanservice was bad though. |
| (The) Slayers (TV) | Good | An older anime that was a lot of fun. A little too rowdy or slapstick at times, but overall pretty good. Very little fanservice too, and three of the five main characters are women. Surprisingly, the world is almost completely Western D&D. The only Japanese elements I noticed were Rezo's staff, Zelgadis and Amelia's magic being of 'spirit' type, and Sylphiel being referred to as a miko (a quite oddly-dressed one though). Oh, and Lina's fondness of hot baths of course. I'm not sure I would buy this series on its own, but I'll definitely check out the rest of the franchise. |
| Slayers - The Motion Picture | Decent | Sheesh. I spent over an hour searching for this movie, to find out that it's also called Slayers Perfect, which I had already downloaded. The art and animation are pretty good, as befits a movie. The story is not so special. The characters designs are a little Disney-esque I think. Naaga's only purpose seems to be fanservice. All in all you wouldn't really miss anything important if you skipped this movie. |
| (The) Slayers Evolution-R (TV) | Decent | Well, with some starts, stops and bad patches, that ended the Slayers series somewhat fittingly. I'm glad this was the last of it though. Time for something different. Looking back, the first installments (Slayers and Slayers Next) were the best, relatively speaking. I wouldn't call them top anime, but they're okay if you're looking for a diversion. I can't point out exactly where it went bad after that, the series just got worse progressively. The actual TV series that is. The movies and OVA episodes are stand-alone stories, and quite a lot worse than the TV series IMO. |

| Slayers Gorgeous (movie) | So-so | Another silly story of Lina and Naga. While the animation is decent, the story just isn't interesting. Silliness is okay here and there, but if I don't care about the characters, it kinda falls flat. |
| (The) Slayers Next (TV) | Good | Yay, the whole gang (except Sylphiel so far) is back. The comedy is still only so-so, but the action is decent at least. Naga's been replaced by Martina, who is only a little less annoying. The ending was a little too grand, but otherwise not bad. Overall this series is as good as the first. |
| Slayers Premium (movie) | Not really good | Oy, I hope this is not representative of the following series. Everyone is acting like a caricature of their previous self. The art is rather different, although that will just take a little to get used to. The story of this movie is on par with the other movies and OVAs. That is, it's too silly for words. |
| Slayers Return (movie) | Decent | Like Slayers Perfect, this is a story only about Lina and Naga. The other characters from the Slayers TV series aren't in it. It's about as silly as Perfect too. I don't really like Naga. Too much fanservice, too little character. I suppose the other stand-alone movies will be much the same. I hope the Next TV series is about the old group again. They worked much better as a team than Naga. |
| (The) Slayers Revolution (TV) | Decent | Is it me, or is this series becoming sillier and less serious with each installment? Pokota's voice and behavior are very annoying. Suddenly, it's ep.13 and the series ends. Continued in Slayers Evolution-R. Duclis wasn't very convincing as bad guy. Let's see if the robot maid does better. |
| (The) Slayers Try (TV) | Decent | It's sort of classic Slayers, but the story progresses a little too randomly. That is, plot twists or new elements are introduced that don't fit smoothly with the rest of the story. All in all, a decent Slayers entry, but not top entertainment. |
| Slayers: The Book of Spells (OAV) | Not really good | Yet another collection of three stories. The writers really seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel now. The second episode is just one gag repeated. The third takes the shortcut of having two very long insert songs. |
| Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle (TV) | Excellent | Very promising first ep. apparently, so let's check the reviews after it finishes. Hmm, the main idea is pretty good, a princess more dangerous than a castle full of demons who actually just wants to sleep. The short 'quests' seem more suited to a short anime though, not the regular 24min. I wonder if it'll run out of ideas soon. Well, it's still going strong in ep.2, so maybe it works after all. Could've done without the innuendo in the first part of ep.3 though. The princess looks like she's about 10 or so. These subtitles aren't very good. At first the choice to 'translate' names looks Commie-style, but I guess there are several demons with names that don't really make sense otherwise. Still not sure I'd have made that choice, but it's somewhat understandable. Translations of on-screen text are bad though. Incorrectly timed, and they leave a lot untranslated. Most demons get eye-catch descriptions, and only it's disappointing that only the names are translated (the first few eps. had the 'stats' translated as well, but even that stopped for some reason). The OP is pretty catchy and would've been more enjoyable with subs. Seems like the streaming subs are the only ones available though :( Despite the somewhat lacking subs this is really one of the most fun anime I've watched in a while. I'll have to look up the manga too since it seems it has more stories than were adapted here. Highly recomended. |
| (The) Slime Diaries (TV) | So-so | Broadcast between the first and second half of S2. The first 6 eps. or so only cover S1 though, so could be watched after that. This is kinda like an OVA or other cash-in product. It doesn't extend the main story at all, just adds fluff and service. It's not bad, but as it's completely slice-of-life, the mood is quite different from the main story. |
| So I'm a Spider, So What? (TV) | Good | Seems to be based on the LN version of the story, not the manga. Still, Kumoko is apparently just as cute here, so I'll probably watch this. Yeah, definitely the LN version. About a third of the ep. is spent on some other students from former Kumoko's class. Kumoko's story is as much of a page-turner as the manga though, so I guess I'll put up with the extras. Even putting aside the (so far not too frequent fortunately) rest of the cast, this anime seems to speed a bit through the manga's story. Ep.4 and she's already beaten the monkeys. I guess things go quicker in animated form than panel by panel. No, this definitely skips bits here and there. The manga was much more thorough in covering all the details. (ep.5) Also, did she pick up the Pride skill just randomly in the manga too? (ep.6) And was the Perseverance skill also a Taboo one? I should check the manga's details again. Yeah, I really should. (ep.9) The detail that the what's-her-name mini-dragon egg and Hero Julius's scarf both came from that early encounter with humans burning down Kumoko's home *fifteen years ago* was of course left out of the manga because it wasn't in Kumoko's story, but the later battle (ep.10) with the wizard and summoner that teleported away was given a little more backstory I think. Did I miss the detail that that was also ~15 years ago? Or was the reminiscing about it in present time left out of the manga? (ep.11) Then there's also the knowledge gained from maxing out Taboo. I think in the manga it was mentioned she gained it, but no details were given. Here there's a bit more about history, and Kumoko's decision to save the world later on which I don't recall from the manga. Anyways, ep.12 is already the battle with Araba (spelled Alaba in the fan translation of the manga). We're getting closer to the point I reached with the manga. Maybe it would be good to read that again before this overtakes it? Okay, started reading the manga again from the beginning. Yeah, there are definitely parts skipped by the anime. In particular, Mother showing up to take out the fire dragon's army and half its HP is omitted, as well as Kumoko's parallel attack through her mind link. Those seem like important details though. Kumoko's decision to save the world (or at least herself) after maxing out Taboo is in the manga though, and her encounter with the mage and summoner is told from both perspectives (theirs not as recalling old memories though). For other notes see the comments on the manga. Let's continue the anime now. (ep.13) Whoa, this restructures the story a bit. In the manga Kumoko discovered the link with Mother before the battle with Araba and the 3 parallel wills left on their own. The first battle with the arch&greater taratects happened in the labyrinth (not sure if it was before or after Araba). Here she doesn't discover the link until after she reaches the surface and *orders* the 3 wills to go. The battle with the arch&greaters happens on the surface too, though she does use the middle layer to fry them. From the look of the second OP the battle with Mother might get more prominence here too? Anyway in ep.14 she already meets the vampire baby, which in the manga didn't happen until after the battle with Mother and the first battles with the demon king. The rest of the ep. shows Shun battling some friends brainwashed by the grown-up vampire who is allies with the nasty guy (Shun's enenmy) and the demon king. With all the reordering of events and Shun's side taking up time it isn't until ep.19 that Mother bites it, just as anticlimactically as in the manga btw. Quite a lot of details are left out of Kumoko's side too. Looks like they're going for an ending with two large scale battles from the two storylines. Ep.21 is all Shun's side, no Kumoko at all. Ep.23 again so, and then ep.24 is nearly all Kumoko reviving after being killed by demon king Ariel and then fighting head elf Potimas before teaming up with vampires Sophia & Merazophis and Ariel. So the anime ended pretty much where the manga translation is at the moment as regards Kumoko's storyline, and Shun's storyline just reached the point where they meet Kumoko. Neither storyline has a real ending here. They haven't even properly connected. It's basically a 'the battle continues' ending. Well, it was kinda expected with the way the second half went, but I was hoping there would at least be more of a connection between the two sides. Besides all the heavy Kumoko's side is the past of Shun's side implications that is. Overall I liked the first half better than the second. Kumoko's battles in the labyrinth are more interesting than the fast plot developments without much battle later on, and Shun's side is only interesting because it gives some additional details about the setting. The elves being military-industrial evil kinda pushed the setting too far I feel, but I guess we'll see where the manga goes (or the anime if it ever gets a second season; seems unlikely though, considering how much of the story it covered). |
| Sol Bianca: The Legacy (OAV) | Very good | Recommended by Tricky. Female space pirates. This remake seems to be longer? Hmm, the first ep. was pretty cool. The pacing was a bit awkward sometimes, but otherwise it was really cool. I wonder what the rest'll be like. This feels a bit like Noir or Avenger. Maybe it's just the age of this anime. Looks like everyone gets their focus ep. 1 was April (or Mayo?), 2 was Jun, 3 was Jani. Jani's was the weakest so far. Her suddenly caring so much about Gwen felt out of character, and the pacing was rather uneven in general. Ep.4 was about Feb. Wow, that turned very dark and depressing, and straight. Hmm, is ep.5 Mayo's focus ep? Not sure if this still fits. Looks like Percy is now a regular character, and Feb's still not coming back. Only one ep. left to make things all right again.. Well, it wasn't without some weirdness and magic, but it did get a resolution. A somewhat reset ending, but that was to be expected. Overall it was pretty good. |
| Solty Rei (TV) | Good | A bit of a weird anime. It's not bad, quite nice actually, but it doesn't get the story-telling quite right I think. The first half of the series is all peaceful and nice, almost slice-of-life. Then there's a wham episode followed by some depression. Then it goes into the plot for the second half, with some characters we'd gotten attached to killed off for real without ceremony or second thought. The lead-up to the ending is a bit confusing, but the ending is satisfying enough. Then there's a second ending, which I think wasn't necessary for the story. All in all, like I said, it's nice, but I can't call it great. |
| Someday's Dreamers (TV) | Excellent | Ah, that's better. Nice art, and a sympathetic main character who, even while being a little naïve or clumsy at times, at least isn't too dumb to live. I like Yume's accent too :) Mmm ^_^ This is one of those healing type anime that put a big smile on your face. I love it. Highly recommended to fans of anime like Aria and Haibane Renmei. Second time watching this, this time from DVD. The subs weirdly translate 魔法 as "Special Power". Why not just "magic"? I'm also noticing that this anime has rather limited animation. A lot of shots are just slow zooms or pans of still images. |
| Someday's Dreamers II Sora (TV) | Good | Backgrounds that are just filtered photos, but character art that looks rather crude most of the time. A clashing combination that makes the anime look cheap. The story is okayish, but not as good as the first Someday's Dreamers. |
| Sora no Manimani (TV) | Excellent | A cute little comedic slice-of-life anime. It is pretty good, but not among the top. Astronomy is an interesting topic, but it's hard to make a starry sky look exciting. Watching this again because I'm going to visit a planetarium later this week. It's actually a pretty cute anime, and Mii-chan can make anything exciting ^_^ For the record, "Summer Memories" goes between eps.5 and 6, "Ryuusei Distance" goes between eps.9 and 10, and "Twinkle Star" goes between eps.11 and 12. |

| Soul Eater (TV) | Decent | Leah commented on Maka & Chrona, which got me curious. Well, if the first three eps. are representative this'll be a slog. I hope they drastically tone down the male idiocy. Yah, like Leah said, after the first few eps. it gets less annoying. Well, except for the Excalibur eps., those are just bad (and can be skipped without any problem). It was all very shounen, with the more-talking-than-fighting battles, and random anything-can-happen magic or abilities. I liked the first half or so (⅔?) better than the last arc (after Asura's revival). Too much navel-gazy talk. I would've liked to see Crona more involved as an equal. The ending was well, okayish, but not really great. All of the big villains (Medusa, Arachne, Asura) were defeated/offed too easily. Medusa and Asura you'd expect to survive the puny battles they died in, given that they survived much worse before, and Arachne was played up as a big bad but didn't really play much of a role in the end. Black Star was too loud, Tsubaki too quiet. Overall, it was okay though. |
| Soul Eater Not! (TV) | Good | Separate continuity from Soul Eater, so maybe we can watch the yuri without watching the original? Also has that 'ecchi' tag though.. :/ Well, the first ep. isn't too bad. They don't really explain why these hero duos are needed, but the rest is at least understandable. Hmm, I get the impression this'll be a bit like Hidan No Aria AA in that it is more about girls hanging out than lots of action. Well, it had a little more action than expected from the first few eps., but slightly less than Hidan No Aria AA. The ending was a little tame compared to the long setup, but the three girls staying together as a trio throughout was really nice. Not quite as clearly poly/lesbian as Yuyushiki's threesome, but still very nice. |
| Sound of the Sky (TV) | Very good | When I started this anime, I was a little apprehensive of the mix of slice-of-life and military. It turned out better than I expected. It's not perfect, but the background is very intriguing, the setting very pretty, and the characters very likeable. Takemikazuchi and its ilk are an interesting take on spider tanks too. Overall, I liked it enough to want to own it :) |
| Space Camper Chicchi (movie) | Decent | Anime No Tane 2022 Didn't these entries use to be longer? Like, 20-24min. long? All of the 2021 and 2022 entries I have are at most 10min. long.. :/ I guess the camping part was inspired by Yuru Camp? The rest is just space adventure though. Also begs the question if he could reach the escape pods why didn't he leave? Ah well, it's okayish for what it is. |
| Space Pirate Mito (TV) | Good | Mito's son becomes a girl at the end of S1, stays a girl in S2. Old video is old. And dubtitles it seems :/ It looks like it'll be fun though. And the main character is a mom too, pretty unique in anime. The eps. feel quite short. That's usually a good sign (if they're actually normal length of course). Hmm, some of the flashbacks/explanations were a little rushed, especially near the end. And the ending itself was really rushed. It was still a pretty cool and interesting anime though. I wonder what'll happen in S2. The setup at the end of the last ep. looked a little iffy. |
| Spectral Force (OAV) | So-so | Came up in the character guessing game. Whoa, this art.. Half 3D? Wholly low quality in any case. I'm not sure why I put this on the list. Female MC maybe? This OVA tells only part of a longer story it seems, and in separate short bits at that. The story has potential, but that's about all you can say from this OVA. |
| Speed Grapher (TV) | Decent | At first I thought the whole corrupt rich folks blackmailed about fetishes angle wasn't very interesting. Now (around ep.6) it seems that the anime focuses more on Saiga & Kagura vs. the evil empire, and there's enough suspense to keep watching. Not exactly sure about the whole superpowers thing though. That seems a little too American superhero comic book. *lol* Ginza said so too when Saiga explained to her what was going on. Hmm, towards the end the story slows down somewhat, so it wasn't as captivating anymore (there's even a clip episode). It disappointed me a little that the few women in this anime were all either victims or prostitutes or both. Even Ginza didn't really escape being a victim, and her character was all about getting Saiga back anyway. All in all Speed Grapher isn't worse than I expected, but not better either. Worth watching, but don't expect excellence. |
| Spice and Wolf (TV) | Good | I wonder why this anime is so popular. Not much is happening yet, and the conversations are kinda vague. Horo and Lawrence appear to have some special kind of understanding, until you remember that thing about horoscopes (and other vague fortunes like them) always being just the right mixture of vagueness and universal truisms that they feel uncannily accurate. When you look closer, each is really just uttering half of a conversation they have with themself, and it is the viewer who interprets that as a deep understanding and banter between them. Well, that is what I've seen so far anyway. Maybe it gets better. Or maybe it's really just the ears and tail that make Horo popular, who knows. Ah, so there was some action in this anime after all. Good, because I find economics, historical or not, rather boring. Sometimes it sounds too much like second-guessing, 'I know that you know that I know', etc. The interaction between Horo and Lawrence also got a little better later on. All in all, this anime is somewhat overrated, but not bad really. I think I'll watch the second season too. |
| Spirited Away (movie) | Excellent | See, this is better. Chihiro/Sen is the main and POV character. Karaji mentions it's love between Sen and Haku a couple of times, but I don't really see it as more than friendship. Chihiro at least looks too young for romance. Really one of the best Ghibli movies I think. |

| Squid Girl (TV) | Decent | This isn't a bad anime, but it certainly doesn't live up to the hype. The lack of any plot or character development makes it depend only on humor, and the jokes are merely okay. |
| Star Twinkle Precure (TV) | Very good | I like this season's style. I think it'll be one of the better seasons. And indeed it was. Really colorful and spacey. I don't think a PreCure season has spent so much time away from Earth before. It'll be hard for next year to compare to this. Elena's family felt a little stereotypical Latinx (while still not having characters with both darker skin and dark hair), but fortunately it didn't play too big a role. Elena and Madoka played second banana to the other three most of the time, and both Yuni and Lala kinda faded after their stories were presented. The final arc was nicely actionful, but the Ophiuchus-Princess-villain-behind-the-Darknest-villain thing felt unnecessary to me, drawing the ending out without adding much. Ep.49 had the same setup as the last three seasons', first half bonus villain defeated with help from next season's main Cure, second half flash-forward to show everyone's futures. It's a nice way to end a season really. |
| Star Twinkle Precure: Hoshi no Uta ni Omoi wo Komete (movie) | Very good | Oh, that was a nice movie. Much better than the All Stars one. Unusually for a recent PreCure movie, there was no call on the audience to use the miracle lights. There was one used several times in the movie, but it wasn't super plot-important. There also didn't seem to be the usual moment of desperation in a final boss battle. Both changes for the better imo. I wonder if Ann's recent introduction in the series was because of this movie. I guess I'll see when I get back to that. |
| Starship Operators (TV) | Decent | A nice anime. The premise is really far out, which is interesting. The bad thing is that this series is only 13 eps. long. That means that the characters don't get much depth, and the story isn't very complex. It could easily have been made into two 26 ep. seasons with the huge cast and intriguing setting and plot. The ending was a bit of a let-down, but otherwise this anime is very much worth watching. Second time: Well, it still has its moments, but it's not great really. Art is just passable, animation is often minimal, CG is also barely passable, the plot is sometimes very predictable (Shinon's new boyfriend for example), and the ending is kind of a letdown (the battles were the highlights early on, but the final battle is partly over too quickly, and ends disappointingly). So yeah, all in all it's still worth watching, but not great. |
