Hellsing Ultimate (OAV) Very good
Inuyasha (TV) Very good
Monster (TV) I tried watching the first few episodes of this dubbed. I seriously don't mind dubs if they are well done. Unfortunately, the scripting for this is simply not up to par. The distributer should have hired the person who did the fan translation for the manga when it was released back in the 90s. Or just used it since it was not the person's property to begin with. They were far better at capturing the spirit of this wonderful story in English. The dub on this is horrible. Awful. I have to rent or find the subs to watch it.

Akira (movie) Not really good I was really surprised that I disliked this anime. My husband liked it very much. It grabbed his attention and held it throughout, where I found myself wishing that the characters would just die already. When the action began to go mecha, I started rolling my eyes. The movie lost me completely at that point. My husband was only more interested in it on all levels - Spiritual and the mecha. It's a matter of taste.
Angel Sanctuary (OAV) Decent Some of the most beautiful animation on the planet. Unfortunately the plot of the manga is just too complicated for anime. Practically nothing makes any sense. It is nearly impossible to care about the characters unless you buy the premise that beautiful equals lovable. I don't. Sara is just as annoying in the anime as she is in the manga. I wish she would stay dead.
(The) Animatrix (OAV) Excellent
Appleseed (movie) Good I liked this quite a bit, but was distracted by the constant CGI. I'm not a gamer and it really stood out and after a while became very annoying. It was unfortunate because the story was fantastic, as I expect from a Shirow vehicle. I find I have more tolerance for mech from Shirow than I do in most sci-fi. Once again, my husband liked it quite a bit and didn't mind the CGI. I really must read the manga.
Ayakashi - Samurai Horror Tales (TV) Very good
Battle Royale (live-action movie) Excellent
(The) Big O (TV) Very good
Black Lagoon (TV) Masterpiece
Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage (TV) Masterpiece
Blood+ (TV) Very good
Blood: The Last Vampire (movie) Excellent Wow. Just. Wow. This is a Must Own. Oshii is one of my favorite creators in anime and manga. He has a fascinating thought process. This short movie is no different. It's violent, bloody, and gives you a glimpse into the human condition through a character that isn't quite human. Pure Oshii. The action sequences are stunning and well drawn. The VAs are spot-on. I particularly loved Saya's VA. I will be watching this one again. I am already craving more.
Boogiepop Phantom (TV) Very good
Corpse Princess: Aka (TV) Very good
Corpse Princess: Kuro (TV) Very good
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Masterpiece (dub & sub) It should be noted that I have an unnatural liking for the Bebop and all things Bebop. Nothing can compare.
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Masterpiece (dub & sub)
Darker than Black (TV) Very good
Dead Leaves (OAV) Very good (dub & sub) This is seizure-inducing eye candy with a screwy message that goes by so fast that if you blink you will miss it. The vivid characters will stay with you long after they should have faded into anime oblivion. There is a frantic pace to this one that makes it hard to watch at times. The characters are like that, frantic to live before they find out who, or what, they are. The pace reminds me of "Furi Kuri", as does the over-the-top style. The same people worked on both: If you liked "Furi Kuri", you will like this. Violence is just part of the landscape and barely there when you consider the surroundings. It's crude and rude at times, tender and touching at others. Sometimes at the same time. You feel for the characters when their dignity is stolen from them in crude ways, yet you laugh at their situation because it is a joke being played on us all. The dub is very good on this and the sub is first rate. The art is absolutely incredible. This is one to own.
Dominion Tank Police (OAV) Bad
Elfen Lied (TV) Awful (dub), Not really good (sub) This had such promise through the first disc! Really! The rapidly evolving subset of human who replaces us, is a common, but interesting, concept to explore in anime. Lucy's violent hatred and rage were curious at first, understandable after one saw how she was treated within the facility, and then we began to root for her. Once she became Nyu and the fanservice started, it was downhill from there. Maybe I missed something, but the incestuous overtones were completely out of wack with the story. I found myself hoping that Yuka would just die already because her English VA was so annoying. (We switched to the Japanese track with subs and I still hoped for Yuka's most painful death. Damn, she was annoying!) Yuka was only one of the fingers on the big bulletin board of Elfen Lied, however. There was also the question of story. I wanted to care about the humans, but I couldn't. They were all so pathetic. I actually found myself wanting them all to die. Or maybe I just wanted more bloody deaths. I dunno. EL was just a loser in my book.
Ergo Proxy (TV) Masterpiece
FLCL (OAV) Excellent Furi Kuri rocked. At first it made no sense to me at all. Then I realized that it wasn't supposed to. After that, it made perfect sense and I adored it. Sit back and let it fuck with your brain. Quit being so worried about what it means, okay? You will laugh more that way and definately enjoy it more!
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Very good I keep wanting to give this a better rating until I realize that it is the manga that is the influence. The anime is good. The manga is incredible. Really. If you want to get something good, read the manga. The anime is very good, but the manga is so much better. I liked the anime a lot, the characters were fine, the animation was good, etc. But the manga is breathtaking. It really is a case of "the book is so much better than the movie".
Gantz (TV) Good Gantz cracks me up to no end. I love Gantz. I really do. Of course, that means I'm reading the manga. However. Unlike most, I have no problems with the last few eps of the anime. In fact, the last few are probably the most "deep" of all of the eps in the anime. They are the least video game of the entire series and actually bring closure to the series. Naturally, that means that it veers far, far away from the manga. Which, of course, means that there are no women with seven or eight breasts. (omg) I can't explain anything about Gantz. A person just has to watch or read it. Seriously. It's impossible to explain it without looking like a complete douche.
Gantz (live-action movie) Decent
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Masterpiece
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) Masterpiece I absolutely loved this movie. I don't know where to begin, really. The only complaint I have is that I was unable to focus all of my attention on the gorgeous animation when watching it. I had to read subtitles in order to know what was being said during any given scene. Often the dialogue did not match the animation, but a deeper meaning was revealed when a close eye gave it a fleeting glimpse. I felt that I could get so much more out of Innocence if I could just use both my sense of sight and hearing at the same time. The fleeting glimpses could examine as my ears did some of the work. It's a shame that pomposity and arrogance gets in the way of art so much. It takes so much away from everyone involved. It's sad.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Masterpiece (dub & sub)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG (TV) Masterpiece
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society (movie) Excellent
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Excellent (dub & sub) Before you pop this into the DVD player, make sure that you have at least two boxes of tissues at your side. This is one of the most emotionally moving movies I've ever seen. I think what is so difficult and heartbreaking about it is that every character is flawed and that no judgements are placed upon them by the storyteller. There is no judgement placed upon the world that they lived within either. No judgements except that war sucks for everyone and it makes people do horrible things to each other on both a large scale and a small scale. That children's fate is known from the beginning of the movie makes the journey no less heartbreaking.
Gungrave (TV) Good (dub & sub)
Gunslinger Girl (TV) Decent
Haibane Renmei (TV) Masterpiece
Hell Girl (TV) Decent
Hellsing (TV) Excellent I am going to pretend that the last two Orders do not exist. Neither does that THING that popped up in the end to do battle with Alucard. Doing battle with the gods? WTF? They left camp and went ice fishing. Bleh. The rest is brilliant as long as it followed the manga closely.
InuYasha the Movie: Affections Touching Across Time Good
Jin-Roh - The Wolf Brigade (movie) Masterpiece
Jyu-Oh-Sei (TV) Very good I didn't think I would enjoy Jyu Oh Sei as much as I did. I didn't know anything about it when I started watching it. It was truly a "test" screening of an anime. Outside of the obvious bishiness of all the male characters, the anime is well illustrated. Only secondary male characters or older male characters have scars or body defects. Movement is fluid and richly imagined. Sword and gun battles are finely tuned. The world the characters inhabit is well thought and finely detailed as well. The battles with plants are especially fun, although some of the plants and battles with them are recognizable in other forms from other sci-fi mediums. (The sandworms in Dune anyone? No matter - Inspiration. I'm not a person who really has a problem with that anyway.) It is a short anime and well worth the quick viewing time. The show moves along at a brisk pace, moving abruptly through Thor's years on Chimera, growing from boy to man. It wastes no time, that's for certain. Now we come with the single problem I have with Jyu Oh Sei. The horrid treatment of women throughout its eleven episodes. One of the reasons I watched the show for the entire eleven episodes is so that I could watch the women of Chimera rise up dump all of the men to the mercy of the carniverous plants. The women that inhabit the show are fabulous. They can fight, think, and lead without a problem. Yet when they come into contact with any testosterone, they become weak baby-making machines (Literally!), defending the man they want to reproduce with even to the death. The man can shun them, stab them, shoot them, exile them, humiliate them, and through it all, they stand by him, waiting for him to consent to sex with her for the purpose of making a child. Unlike the men of Chimera, the women abandon community, family, and friends to be at the side of the man they pick. Some give up their lives. The treatment of females in Jyu Oh Sei is horrendus. I wouldn't recommend that young men watch this series without a good sit down talk from someone who can explain that attempting to kill a girl is not a likely way to get her to remove her bra. Ditto with girls and explaining that hanging all over a guy who has just stuck a knife through your lungs is probably not a good way to carry on relationships.
Kakurenbo - Hide & Seek (movie) Good
Kite (OAV) Very good
Lady Snowblood (live-action movie 1973) Excellent
Metropolis (movie) Very good
Mezzo Forte (OAV) Decent
Millennium Actress (movie) Masterpiece This is one of the best animated movies I have ever seen. The animation is detailed, rich, and beautiful. Small details stand out. Every stroke of the brush is meaningful. I am not good describing art, but this is gorgeous. The story is equally important in Millennium Actress. Chiyoko took me from one time to another leaving me breathless. Each character was fleshed out. Only one character was two dimensional during the film - All the others were multifaceted, even the prison guard, whom we are supposed to hate. The two dimensional character spends nearly the entire movie off screen but for a few moments near the beginning of the film. The end is stunning and real.
Mushi-Shi (TV) Masterpiece
Ninja Resurrection (OAV) Worst ever This has nothing to do with Ninja Scroll. This is teh horrible. Random sex, violence, and religion. What a confusing mess. I think some kid is supposed to be the chosen Christ child for the Far East to spread Monotheism, but they rejected it or something and then he was a demon because of a warrior who was good and then bad and then good. Then the chosen soft spoken good kid had sex with/raped some priest's daughter. The movie ended. WTF? It was 40 minutes long. No, that wasn't a spoiler. Trust me.
Ninja Scroll (movie) Excellent
Noein - to your other self (TV) Excellent This is a truly beautiful anime. Every character is unique and fascinating. The story is unique. The animation eye catching and incredible. The music dramatic and appropriate, staying in the background where it belongs. It's an intelligent anime. It never talks down to the viewer, yet seems to explain complicated, scientific plot points in a way that everyone can understand. I have some reservations about the way that the Haruka's house is drawn, but they are minor. It doesn't blend with the rest of the series compared with the rest of the other intimate portraits of the characters and time-spaces. Each is unique, but the house seems out of place with all of them, however.

Puppet Princess (OAV) Good
Read or Die (OAV) Very good I watched this on Adult Swim. I liked it a great deal, but I think I want to watch the sub. Something felt "wrong" to me in spots. The relationship between the characters was slightly off center. Miss Paper didn't command the respect I thought she deserved. The American VAs seemed fine, I think the problem may have been with the translation to an American script. I shall surely rent this someday and watch the sub. I have a feeling that my rating will change. I would also like to see the television show!
Rurouni Kenshin (TV 1996) Good (dub), Excellent (sub)

Trigun (TV) Very good
Vampire Hunter D (OAV) Awful Will someone please tell me what is so wonderfull about this horrible thing? Really, just because it was a first, doesn't mean that it's the best. This one sucks.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (movie) Excellent This was *everything* the first one wasn't. The plot was excellent, I cared about the characters, the story moved along at a decent pace, and the animation was fantastic.
Wicked City (movie) Not really good
Witch Hunter Robin (TV) Very good
Witchblade (TV) Decent
Wolf's Rain (TV) Not really good You know something's wrong when you cheer as characters get picked off. I just wanted it to end. The show turned into a cliched marathon of endurance. For the first time ever, I was been on the side of evil. I despised all of the good characters because they were so boring and hackedneyed. Every single one was an anime stereotype with no outstanding feature whatsoever. The script for this anime was a horrible Trigun ying-yan rip-off. Yes, that was a spoiler. However, the art and the music are beautiful, and I felt compelled to watch it to the end because of this. The beginning is absolutely beautiful. I wish that the dystopia that was presented at the beginning and through glimpses during the anime could have been fleshed out, but the writers chose to focus on characters more than the world that they'd created. It's a shame.
