| Animation Runner Kuromi (OAV) | Good | Lots of fun, particularly for a fan of animation that would like to know more about the process. The art style wasn't my thing, but it's cute. The dub's not my favorite but it works. |
| Azumanga Daioh (TV) | Excellent (dub & sub) | Probably one of my favorites. It's so ZANY, I think it's hilarious. The music is very good, too, and the character designs are great. Plus, the dub is very well done, particularly Luci Christian's performance as Yukari. Definately worth a try. |
| Castle in the Sky (movie) | Excellent (dub), Masterpiece (sub) | One of my favorite Miyazaki movies. My only issue with this movie is that it isn't quite as original as some of Miyazaki's other films (like Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away), but it's a solid piece of work that ages well. The dub's a bit of a mixed bag--the leads are only OK, but most of the other characters are excellent, particularly Mark Hamil as the main villian. |
| (The) Cat Returns (movie) | Very good (dub), Excellent (sub) | I really enjoyed this movie, both in the sub and the dub (although the dub takes some liberties). Great animation (of course, it's Ghibli), and a really cute story. I'm disappointed Disney used dubtitles for this release, however--I'm glad the Japanese release has the real subtitles on the disk. |
| Chrono Crusade (TV) | Very good | Chrono Crusade is a good series and very entertaining to watch, with a dub I absolutely love. (In fact, the dub is the reason I rated this "very good" instead of just "good". Personally, though, I think the manga is much, MUCH better. The anime has a lot more weird Christian theology than the manga (which can make someone like myself, who is a Christian, cringe during some scenes) and some of the changes they made--particularly to Aion's personality and Rosette's background--aren't for the better. I recommend checking out the manga first, but the anime certainly isn't a waste of time. |
| Cowboy Bebop (TV) | Excellent | The ending for this anime blew me away, as well as the music. Definately deserving of all of the popularity it has, although I'm not obsessed with the show. |
| Cromartie High School (TV) | Very good | I definantely don't regret buying this series. Some episodes are slower than other, and there's no "story" to speak of, but for the most part the anime is absolutely hilarious. So far I've only seen the dub, but the dub was very well done (although not quite perfect). I adore Mechazawa. |
| Death Note (TV) | Very good | |
| Digimon Adventure (TV) | Very good | I aboslutely loved this show as a kid. I've never had a chance to see the original Japanese version, however. |
| Digimon Adventure 02 (TV) | Good | I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first season, but it was enjoyable. |
| Digimon Tamers (TV) | Decent | |
| Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (US CG movie) | Weak | Meh. Didn't really care for this movie at all. Very pretty to look at, but confusing, and I don't recall being very attatched to the characters. |
| FLCL (OAV) | Very good | |
| Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) | Masterpiece (dub & sub) | FMA is one of my favorite anime series of all time. It's not perfect, but it has excellent animation, great writing and characters, and a beautiful soundtrack. To top it off, the dub is possibly the best dub ever done for any anime. Definately check this one out. |
| Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa | Excellent | Not the "BEST MOVIE EVAH", but a nice ending to the series. I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't seen the series yet, though. |
| Gungrave (TV) | Very good | Probably the only good anime to ever be based on a video game. I didn't really like how it ended, but otherwise I REALLY enjoyed it. Dark, gritty, and dramatic. Recommended for fans of Hellsing or Trigun. |
| Howl's Moving Castle (movie) | Excellent (dub & sub) | Really, really confusing at points--the book had a better plot--but there's lovable characters, gorgeous animation and a nice romance to be found here. Probably one of my least favorites of Miyazaki's films, but still excellent. |
| Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) | Excellent | Loooove this one. It's a bit slow moving, but every moment is in the movie for a reason. The characters as so rememberable and lovable, too. |
| Last Quarter (live-action movie) | Good | Not the best movie, but very, very beautiful, with great music. I really liked the children actors. Special effects were a bit overdone. |
| Millennium Actress (movie) | Very good | |
| Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OAV) | Decent | |
| My Neighbor Totoro (movie) | Excellent | |
| My Neighbors the Yamadas (movie) | Excellent | |
| Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) | Excellent | I don't love this one like some fans of Miyazaki does...I didn't get attatched to the characters like I do with most of Miyazaki's movies. Still a solid film, however, and it's great to see how my favorite director started. |
| Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) | Masterpiece | I was very, very surprised by how much I liked this anime. I didn't expect to like it so much, but I do...particularly the strong characters ('strong' in the sense of being well developed and realistic, at least). The more I think about it, the more I find myself liking it. It's slowly becoming one of my favorites. |
| Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) | Very good | |
| Nerima Daikon Brothers (TV) | Very good | |
| Ouran High School Host Club (TV) | Very good | A bit of a guilty pleasure of mine because of the harem aspects, but a FUN anime. I loved all the characters--they're both great parodies of typical character types in shoujo shows, and deep, interesting characters in their own rights. There's quite a few laugh-out-loud funny moments in the anime, too. I'm looking forward to the American release. |
| Paprika (movie) | Excellent | |
| Paranoia Agent (TV) | Excellent | I love, love, LOVE this anime. Haven't seen the sub yet--need to get the DVD--but I absolutely enjoyed this anime's run on Cartoon Network. It's a shame it wasn't as popular as the shounen shows. The animation is nearly movie-quality, and the characters feel very REAL. |
| Pokemon 2000 - The Movie | Decent | I saw this back when I was into Pokemon. I enjoyed it, but I didn't think it was incredible. |
| Pokemon: The First Movie | Decent | |
| Porco Rosso (movie) | Excellent | I think this one is a bit slower than some of Miyazaki's other movies, but it's really a beautiful movie that has a nice, mature feel to the anime. |
| Princess Mononoke (movie) | Masterpiece (dub & sub) | A masterpiece. Hands down. Not everyone will like this anime (no anime is loved by everyone), but I ADORE it. One of my favorites. Great plot, great characters, beautiful animation. Any anime fan should try this at least once. |
| Princess Tutu (TV) | Masterpiece (dub & sub) | My favorite anime of all time. I LOVE it. Great animation, excellent use of classical music. Incredibly original plot, that uses fairytale elements so well and defys the conventions of the magical girl genre. I love every single character, down to the background characters with only one or two lines. To top it off, ADV did a phenominal job with the dub. I particularly loved Chris Patton as Fakir and Marty Fleck (I believe) as Drosselmeyer. Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommended, particularly if you're a shoujo fan or really like fairytales or ballet. |
| Read or Die (OAV) | Very good | |
| Spirited Away (movie) | Masterpiece (dub & sub) | The movie that made me a Miyzaki fan. Probably one of his best. Great animation, and does a great job of developing characters (even though it only has two hours to do so!) If you haven't seen it, you should. |
| Superbook (TV) | Decent | |
| Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) | Good (dub), Excellent (sub) | It's hard to believe that only one man made this anime...for what it is, it's brilliant. I was a little confused about what was going on while watching it at points, but it might've been my mood on the day I watched it.
One thing that annoys me about this anime is ADV's dub, though. The two actors they hired are great, I admire both of them--but they were struggling with an inaccurate script that was at times a little awkward. When bad scripts happen to good actors, ugh. |
| Welcome to the NHK (TV) | Very good | |
| Whisper of the Heart (movie) | | |
