Whisper of the Heart (movie) Decent
Welcome to the NHK (TV) Very good (dub & sub)
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) Decent (dub), Very good (sub) It's hard to believe that only one man made this anime...for what it is, it's brilliant. I was a little confused about what was going on while watching it at points, but it might've been my mood on the day I watched it. One thing that annoys me about this anime is ADV's dub, though. The two actors they hired are great, I admire both of them--but they were struggling with an inaccurate script that was at times a little awkward. When bad scripts happen to good actors, ugh.
Toradora! (TV) Good
Tiger & Bunny (TV) Excellent
Superbook (TV) Decent
Steamboy (movie) Not really good
Star Driver (TV) Good
Spirited Away (movie) Excellent (dub & sub) The movie that made me a Miyzaki fan. Probably one of his best. Great animation, and does a great job of developing characters (even though it only has two hours to do so!) If you haven't seen it, you should.
Slayers Return (movie) Decent
Slayers Excellent (OAV) Decent
Slayers - The Motion Picture Decent
Slayers (TV) So-so (dub), Good (sub)
Shiki (TV) Good
Sakura Wars (OAV) Bad
Read or Die (OAV) So-so
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 2: Eternal Very good
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 1: Beginnings Very good
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) Excellent
Princess Tutu (TV) Masterpiece (dub & sub) My favorite anime of all time. I LOVE it. Great animation, excellent use of classical music. Incredibly original plot, that uses fairytale elements so well and defys the conventions of the magical girl genre. I love every single character, down to the background characters with only one or two lines. To top it off, ADV did a phenominal job with the dub. I particularly loved Chris Patton as Fakir and Marty Fleck (I believe) as Drosselmeyer. Highly, highly, HIGHLY recommended, particularly if you're a shoujo fan or really like fairytales or ballet.
Princess Mononoke (movie) Excellent (dub), Masterpiece (sub) A masterpiece. Hands down. Not everyone will like this anime (no anime is loved by everyone), but I ADORE it. One of my favorites. Great plot, great characters, beautiful animation. Any anime fan should try this at least once.
Princess Jellyfish (TV) Good
Pretear (TV) Good (dub & sub)
Porco Rosso (movie) Very good I think this one is a bit slower than some of Miyazaki's other movies, but it's really a beautiful movie that has a nice, mature feel to the anime.
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (movie) Decent
Pom Poko (movie) Good
Pokemon: The First Movie Decent
Pokemon 2000 - The Movie Decent I saw this back when I was into Pokemon. I enjoyed it, but I didn't think it was incredible.
Perfect Blue (movie) Good
Patlabor 2: The Movie Good
Paranoia Agent (TV) Excellent (dub & sub) I love, love, LOVE this anime. Haven't seen the sub yet--need to get the DVD--but I absolutely enjoyed this anime's run on Cartoon Network. It's a shame it wasn't as popular as the shounen shows. The animation is nearly movie-quality, and the characters feel very REAL.
Paprika (movie) Very good (dub & sub)
Ouran High School Host Club (TV) Good (dub), Excellent (sub) A bit of a guilty pleasure of mine because of the harem aspects, but a FUN anime. I loved all the characters--they're both great parodies of typical character types in shoujo shows, and deep, interesting characters in their own rights. There's quite a few laugh-out-loud funny moments in the anime, too. I'm looking forward to the American release.
Nerima Daikon Brothers (TV) Very good
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Very good
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Excellent I was very, very surprised by how much I liked this anime. I didn't expect to like it so much, but I do...particularly the strong characters ('strong' in the sense of being well developed and realistic, at least). The more I think about it, the more I find myself liking it. It's slowly becoming one of my favorites.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) Decent (dub), Good (sub) I don't love this one like some fans of Miyazaki does...I didn't get attatched to the characters like I do with most of Miyazaki's movies. Still a solid film, however, and it's great to see how my favorite director started.
My Neighbors the Yamadas (movie) Very good
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) So-so (dub), Excellent (sub & raw)
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OAV) Decent
Millennium Actress (movie) Very good
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (TV) So-so
Last Quarter (live-action movie) Good Not the best movie, but very, very beautiful, with great music. I really liked the children actors. Special effects were a bit overdone.
Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) Excellent Loooove this one. It's a bit slow moving, but every moment is in the movie for a reason. The characters as so rememberable and lovable, too.
Is This a Zombie? (TV) Decent
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) Good (dub & sub) Really, really confusing at points--the book had a better plot--but there's lovable characters, gorgeous animation and a nice romance to be found here. Probably one of my least favorites of Miyazaki's films, but still excellent.
Hell Girl (TV) Good
Haré+Guu (TV) Good (dub & sub)
Gungrave (TV) Good Probably the only good anime to ever be based on a video game. I didn't really like how it ended, but otherwise I REALLY enjoyed it. Dark, gritty, and dramatic. Recommended for fans of Hellsing or Trigun.
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Masterpiece
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Very good
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) Very good
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Good
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa Decent Not the "BEST MOVIE EVAH", but a nice ending to the series. I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't seen the series yet, though.
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Excellent (dub & sub) FMA is one of my favorite anime series of all time. It's not perfect, but it has excellent animation, great writing and characters, and a beautiful soundtrack. To top it off, the dub is possibly the best dub ever done for any anime. Definately check this one out.
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (TV) Very good
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (TV) Very good
Full Metal Panic! (TV) Decent (dub & sub)
Free! - Iwatobi Swim Club (TV) Good
Flowers of Evil (TV) Good
FLCL (OAV) Good
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (US CG movie) Weak Meh. Didn't really care for this movie at all. Very pretty to look at, but confusing, and I don't recall being very attatched to the characters.
Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo (movie) Good
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (movie) Good
Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (movie) Good
Digimon Tamers (TV) Good
Digimon Adventure 02 (TV) Decent I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first season, but it was enjoyable.
Digimon Adventure (TV) Good I aboslutely loved this show as a kid. I've never had a chance to see the original Japanese version, however.
Death Note (TV) Very good (dub & sub) It's hard to say something about this show that hasn't already been said, but I think it's a great adaptation of the manga. Overhyped, but still worth a watch.
D.N.Angel (TV) Decent I think the manga is a little better, but I still like the show. ...Particularly the dub. The dub might have something to do with my love of the show.
Cromartie High School (TV) Very good I definantely don't regret buying this series. Some episodes are slower than other, and there's no "story" to speak of, but for the most part the anime is absolutely hilarious. So far I've only seen the dub, but the dub was very well done (although not quite perfect). I adore Mechazawa.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Very good The ending for this anime blew me away, as well as the music. Definately deserving of all of the popularity it has, although I'm not obsessed with the show.
Clannad (TV) Good
Chrono Crusade (TV) Good (dub & sub) Chrono Crusade is a good series and very entertaining to watch, with a dub I absolutely love. (In fact, the dub is the reason I rated this "very good" instead of just "good". Personally, though, I think the manga is much, MUCH better. The anime has a lot more weird Christian theology than the manga (which can make someone like myself, who is a Christian, cringe during some scenes) and some of the changes they made--particularly to Aion's personality and Rosette's background--aren't for the better. I recommend checking out the manga first, but the anime certainly isn't a waste of time.
Chihayafuru (TV) Good
(The) Cat Returns (movie) Good (dub & sub) I really enjoyed this movie, both in the sub and the dub (although the dub takes some liberties). Great animation (of course, it's Ghibli), and a really cute story. I'm disappointed Disney used dubtitles for this release, however--I'm glad the Japanese release has the real subtitles on the disk.
Castle in the Sky (movie) Very good (dub), Excellent (sub) One of my favorite Miyazaki movies. My only issue with this movie is that it isn't quite as original as some of Miyazaki's other films (like Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away), but it's a solid piece of work that ages well. The dub's a bit of a mixed bag--the leads are only OK, but most of the other characters are excellent, particularly Mark Hamil as the main villian.
Batman: Gotham Knight (movie) Decent It's worth renting this anthology out to see it, as there's some good shorts in it, but I wouldn't encourage you to buy it blind. Overall the set of shorts here isn't that memorable.
Baccano! (TV) Very good This is a great series with an excellent dub. It's a bit more shallow than its out-of-order airing style makes it seem, I think, but it's still brimming with great animation, wonderful characters, and a fun world. And the dub can't be missed!
Azumanga Daioh (TV) Very good (dub & sub) Really zany and fun show. I personally think the dub is great, but not everyone agrees.
Animation Runner Kuromi (OAV) Decent Lots of fun, particularly for a fan of animation that would like to know more about the process. The art style wasn't my thing, but it's cute. The dub's not my favorite but it works.
Angel Beats! (TV) Good (dub), Very good (sub)
Akira (movie) Good It's easy to see why this is considered a classic, but I'm not sure that it holds up as well today as it once did.
Agent Aika (OAV) Awful The only thing I enjoyed about watching this was counting the panty shots and the character named Gusto. It's good to mock, but not much else.
