After War Gundam X (TV) Excellent
Akira (movie) Very good I liked this movie. It's not the holy grail of anime movies like some people say but it's great. I saw it subbed and recommend it.
Beast Wars: Transformers (U.S. TV) Excellent While not anime, it was dubbed into Japanese. I've never seen the Japanese dub but the original English was a good franchise. It took the transformers franchise and made a different aspect where they transform from animals instead of vehicles. It's 100% CGI too. It's not mindblowing cgi though, it's kinda like "Reboot" CGI. It's still very nice looking though. I recommend it.
Beat Angel Escalayer (OAV) Decent For my first Hentai anime I'm sort of glad I chose this one. It was just weird. There is a story and it's not a coverup for all of the sex. There are too many loose ends with the story though and the ending seemed rushed. I know it's hentai I'm not supposed to expect anymore than some sort of penis shaped object being inserted into a woman but they had something. Oh well. I have no intentions of watching this again unless I need a quick turn on lol.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Very good (dub & sub) Very good. to be honest it's not the best thing ever unlike what some people ay. Maybe my tastes are different. I really liked this series though but I would go so far to say it's a masterpiece. And I don't know but it seems like the sub version is a dub of an american animated show rather than the other way around which I've never seen happen before in all of the anime that I've ever watched. The sub is still good though since some things really aren't funny in the dub but then in the sub it's hilarious. Their both equally good though. I recommend it.
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Excellent
Crying Freeman (OAV) Bad (dub), Good (sub) Great, except too much unnecessary sex and nudity. Most of it didn't even have a point to it and the last episode really sucked in comparison to the earlier parts of the OVA. The dub on this ranges from pure comedy to "I want to punch the TV" wrong. Now I saw the "updated" ADV dub of this and it reminded me of Streamline dub, the horrible, piece of crap Streamline dub. But the ADV dub was fine until episode 3 hit then everything started to go to hell. BGM was added to scenes, lines were completely changed into something else that had nothing to do with anything. The dub makes everything that could be considered sleazy, sleazy and anything cheesy, cheesy. There was ventriloquist dialogue from some characters, sometimes in the Japanese language track the characters would speak actual Chinese, or in one case Russian. There are Japanese subtitles for these sequences but they were pretty unique. Well the dub does away with this completely and everybody speaks english where that's not supposed to be the case. So it was pretty funny that when I was watching parts of the dub random Kanji and hiragana would pop up with on significance whatsoever. The dub also did my most hated things about anime dubs, they added more swearing than there should have been in the original was to make everything seem like it was much more "adult" than it was. Does this work?...Did it work in Angel Cop and Manga Corps dubs? No. It just makes everything suck and presented in a way that you can't take it seriously. Freeman sounds and delivers his lines like a stoner, pretty much s***ing all over Toshio Furukawa performance like no tomorrow. Everytime I hear dubbed Freeman's voice I can't take anything he says seriously because he sounds like he's high. Well, in the end the only thing good about the dub was hearing the girls moan louder during sex scenes except one girl, her moans were much louder on the Japanese side of things but she was a whore. Other than that, this dub sucked. I recommend the subbed version if you take the task of watching this. It's not for everybody either. I don't expect too many people to actually like this OVA series that much because of the turn-offish sex scenes.
Digimon Adventure (TV) Good (edit.dub), Very good (raw) I monster raising series. I like Digimon better than Pokemon for the sole fact that there's a plot and story line but I thought it was good. I don't recommend this for anybody over 11 to start watching this though because it's very shallow to people over that age. I like it only because I've stuck with this series since I was younger but yeah I doubt seasoned anime viewer will even care about this show. The other thing is that the Japanese version makes the plot and story easier to follow than the dub. I did not like how the dub would randomly cut off episodes 1-2 minutes before they were over, sometimes, and then show that 1-2 minutes at the beginning of the next episode. The music's really cool in the JP version too. And these kids talk more their age in the Japanese version, so there's good dialogue. I recommend both finding some raws of Digimon if dubs aren't your thing but the dub's good too, IMO.
Digimon Adventure 02 (TV) Good (edit.dub), Very good (raw) (Comment same as Digimon Adventure)
Digimon Tamers (TV) Very good (edit.dub & raw) This digimon series is one that not alot of people like. I personally like it just as much as Adventure and Adventure 02. The plot more based on Earth rather than the digital world so it added a better "realism" feeling than series before it. This series is pretty dark in both the dub and the Japanese version(more in the Japanese version). I recommend it.
Digimon: Diaboromon Strikes Back (movie) Very good A continuation of Digimon Adventure: Bokura no War Game. The last movie involving the Digimon Adventure cast. I liked this movie a lot. I recommend the subbed version though.
Digimon: Our War Game (movie) Very good This movie was absolutely hilarious and awesome. And this was first Digimon movie that I have ever seen subbed. Man, was it better than, Digimon: The Movie it was miles ahead of it. I recommend it subbed if you haven't seen it.
Digimon: The Golden Digimentals (movie) Very good Another good movie better than its Digimon: The Movie counterpart. I recommend it because the Digimon: The Movie version takes away a huge plotpoint.
Dragon Ball (TV) Good (dub), Excellent (sub) Dragon ball is a fun series to watch. It's funny, has great action, and an epic storyline. Here's what I thought of the dub and subbed versions since I've seen them both. Sub: The Japanese version, I feel, makes Dragon Ball one of the greatest shonen anime series ever. The feeling is so mystic and Goku sounds so cute. I really can't put my finger on it but Dragonball can only be experienced to it's full potential in Japanese moreso than in English. There's alot of preverted humor and it's a bit more fanservicy than one would think. That doesn't bother me though since the moments are really done for comedic value and not for erotic pleasure. Dub: The English dub uses the same voices from Funimation's Dragon Ball Z so every voice actor from the DBZ dub that is in this series will be there. This dub, unlike the DBZ and DBGT dub, uses the original BGM, well partially. Nearly all of the insert songs are removed and thus there's this long silence or added dialogue to fill the void. It's pretty bothersome especially since the reason that some of the sequences were created was specifically for the use of the insert song. So, in the end most of those scenes become very useless because of the missing music. Alot of the Toriyama references are gone or barely etched upon. Penguin Village is pretty much reduced to a town bearing the name of Penguin Village if you get what I mean. If you don't, let's say that if you watched this dubbed and saw weird characters just randomly appearing with no significance whatsoever, would you be confused? I would. General Blue becomes magically straight instead of being gay in the dub as well. I've got some more problems too. Toriyama's drawing style is somewhat considered offensive by some people, not me I fine with it, it's only anime and there aren't offensive things said to these characters, but then dub somewhat puts salt in the wound so to speak with these drawings. Namu, for example is a Hindu Indian and he sounds no different than anybody else in the sub version. In fact, he sounds like he's worth integrity and valor in Japanese. Now the dub makes him sound like what they think a Hindu Indian sounds like when he speaks English. He has a stereotypical Indian accent and he goes around talking like a walking stereotype. I mean I'm not Indian but I was pretty offended with Funimation's voice choice for him. It pretty much lowered Namu to a point where he was just a fool rather than a man worth integrity. Goku's voice choice changes him from a cute naive little kid like the Japanese version, to more of a "cool kid" and that really changes his character. His voice is done by Stephanie Nadolny in the dub and she sounds like a girl with strep throat sometimes, it's pretty grating on the ears too, at least if you've seen the sub first or have gotten too used to how he sounds in Japanese. In my opinion it really on seems like she was voicing Goku to add "continuity" or lack there of in Funimation's DB universe because she also voiced Gohan in the DBZ dub but the thing is, she really cannot voice boys at all. I'm pretty glad that she hasn't done any recent voicework on anything because she just doesn't have a good voice. One other character change worth noting is a character who is a pervert yet his "pervertedness" gets toned down a lot in the dub. I really have this new dislike for Bulma's dub VA too. Her dub VA makes her sound like an airheaded Valley girl. She doesn't even sound like a teenager either. she sounds more like a 40+ year old trying very hard to imitate some kids she heard at the mall in 1980. Really though if I critique the entire cast I'd be saying the same things I don't like about the DBZ dub. Overall this dub is better than the DBZ dub but it still has flaws like stereotypical voices, fandub quality/forced acting rather than professional soundinh, a deviating script that changes character personalities, and barely etching the surface of what makes this series great. I would have to recommend the subbed version over the dub since the dub sometimes strays from the original intention of what the was trying to be said originally and there are changed plot-points that take away from the overall feel of the series. Everything is more enjoyable in Japanese rather than in English. Which, the dub is enjoyable too, but not as much, maybe like 1/4th as enjoyable as the original since mostly everything is stripped down to the bare minimum. The stereotypical voices for some characters made me think of Funimation, and their dub which I thought was actually pretty good, a whole lot less as well. Overall it's good but is still not anywhere near the sub version. I recommend that you watch this series before seeing DBZ because it came first and it makes DBZ more enjoyable.
Dragon Ball Movie 1: Curse of the Blood Rubies Good Muwhahahah! I saw this movie and I saw it fansubbed. It was great. It's pretty much an alternate re-telling of Dragonball Episodes 1-13.
Dragon Ball Movie 2: Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle Very good It was a very good movie. It had all the things that made the original Dragonball so great and most importantly comedy. It's pretty much campy fun but an awesome movie at the same time. I recommend it.
Dragon Ball Movie 3: Mystical Adventure Good A review of the subbed version. This movie is a rough, alternate retelling of episodes 14-89(or so). It's a fun movie it definitely should not be missed if you're a fan of the Dragonball franchise.
Dragon Ball Z (TV) Bad (dub), So-so (edit.dub), Excellent (sub & Spa.dub) (A review of the subbed version) This was my very first anime series that I got into and I'm not going to bore you with my history with this series but needless to say the sub version is way better than the dub. If you've seen this series on TV dubbed and hated it I don't blame you. It makes no sense and the dub is stupid. All I can say is that you're missing out on a good series since the dub breaks everything and poorly puts it back together. One, this version has great music. It actually stops(unlike any english dub's music). Sometimes they have "standoff" scene where absolutely no music plays. Those are the best scenes ever because there's no music, no voices, just silence. It really give you a feeling of a martial arts adventure and captures the feeling of this series way better than the Funimation, and Ocean dubbed versions. All I can say is this music is great on the subbed version. Two, there's great voice acting. The Japanese version has top Seiyuus like the late Hirotaka Suzuoki, Ryo Horikawa, Masako Nozawa, Tohru Furuya, Daisuke Gouri, and Takeshi Kusao, to name a few from this great cast. That's pretty much an all-star cast in Japan and every Seiyuu captures every bit of the character so well it's like the characters are real people. The sub version also has an excellent script. People talk like normal people and not like Looney Toon characters. So all those stupid jokes and that stupid dialogue, FYI, were added to Funimation's dub. Why? I don't know. And lastly there's a coherent followable storyline that doesn't feel repetitive. Some people always complain about DBZ being repetitive or being too long I guarantee you that if you watch this series in Japanese you'll be wanting more and once the series is over you'll wish it hadn't ended. All I can say is that this series is much better in Japanese. I absolutely love the subbed version of this show and it thoroughly captures the essence of the Dragonball world. I absolutely recommend that if you watch this show to watch the subbed version over the dubbed to have a much better experience. My only complaints are that there are too many ridiculously long battles. 10+ episode battles aren't uncommon and things there are things that happen in this anime that made some people give this anime the name "Drag-On Ball Z" if you get what I mean. Also this anime should have just continued with the name Dragonball rather than adding that "Z" thing after like the manga which the whole thing is just, "Dragonball". I encourage you to watch this after watching Dragonball too. Everything makes a lot more sense it's the same anime as Dragonball too just that there's more emphasis on "over the top" fighting rather than "realistic" fighting.
Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku (special) Good (dub), Very good (sub) A review of the subbed version. The 1st of two DBZ TV specials. Now this is essentially a prequel to the original Dragonball series. The BGM here is pretty much the same as the early parts of the DBZ TV series but there are some themes and pieces that are only used in this TV special only. And the story ties together Goku's mysterious past. I recommend this TV special subbed though.
Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound (movie 9) Not really good (dub), Very good (sub) A review of the subbed version. I thought this movie was another good DBZ production. It starts off slow but once it gets going it becomes a great movie. This movie also features some of the best BGM pieces and placement in DBZ too. I really recommend the subbed version of his movie.
Dragon Ball Z: Broly - The Legendary Super Saiyan (movie 8) Good (edit.dub & sub) A review of the subbed version. Broli is considered a cult favorite among DBZ fans. I think he's overrated though. The movie was good but the overratedness of Broli makes this movie a bit hard to watch. I still recommend this movie.
Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge (movie 5) Very good (dub & sub) The only Funimation dubbed DBZ production that I have ever liked as much as the subbed version. The plot is good and the story progression is great. Funimation replaced all the BGM again but it's with good songs from real bands. Some people don't like this music and say you have to be a die hard DBZ dubbie. It's really a matter or taste here in this movie because the music does not suck(unlike the TV series). But I can say that this is the best dubbed DBZ production from Funimation. It's not bad like the TV series and it actually was on the level of the subbed version. Now I can recommend this dubbed but if you've seen the DBZ TV series subbed, then watch the movie subbed.
Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone (movie 1) Good (dub & sub) A pretty good movie. This was the first movie to take place in the DBZ series. The action is great in this movie too I liked the technical choreography put into the fights. They actually seem more like they're watching actual fights sometimes rather than guys hitting each other repeatedly. The story was fast moving and the animation was good. I've the subbed version, the uncut Ocean dubbed version, and some of Funimation's redub of this movie. The Ocean dubbed and the subbd version were both, while the Funimation one wasn't so much. The Funimation version still went through the usual script and name changes, BGM replacing, and bad side voices. I did not like the way Garlic Jr. Henchmen sounded. A change worth noting is that Gohan eats an apple and gets drunk at a point in the movie and the Funimation dub changes it to, "You'll feel weird", but there's no implication that he's getting drunk. And Gohan's "drunk song" was replaced with random techno noises. There are some more changes but I'm not going to list them all because I don't feel like watching the Funimation dubbed version of this movie. The uncut Ocean dubbed version was better and it's what many fans consider what the dubbed DBZ TV series could have been like if it wasn't held under the pressures of Saban and didn't have to go through the horrendous editing and censorship it was subjected to. It has an accurate script, the original BGM is used, and the voices are good for the most part. This dub is worth checking out if you're a fan of the sub version because it is truly what could have been. This dub definitely beats the new dub of this movie so it's worth checking out. The events in this movie are resurfaced in a filler arc in the TV series. So if you're a completionist, this movie is essential. I recommend it.
Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn (movie 12) Excellent A review of the subbed version. This is a great DBZ movie. Probably the best one out of the 13. The plot is actually there and worth somebodies time unlike most DBZ movies. It has some of the greatest bgm in a Dragonball movie too. I can recommend the subbed version.
Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug (movie 4) Awful (dub & sub) I absolutely hate this movie dubbed and subbed(which is unusual because I usually like subbed DBZ). This is the worst DBZ movie I have seen. The plot is the most generic thing to ever come out of a Toei executive's mind. The animation's spotty at best. and, just everything sucks. I don't recommend that you watch this movie dubbed or subbed or at all.
Dragon Ball Z: Plan to Destroy the Saiyajin (OAV) Decent People always call this a lost movie. It's not a movie it's just a two part visual OVA on how to beat the Playdia game of this with a completion rate of 100%. It' not that I didn't like it either. I just didn't like the cheap 90's BGM that was used rather than getting the(real not dub) DBZ BGM composer and the story was rather generic overall. You can go without this one but people are still probably going to see this because it has a "lost movie" status.
Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13! (movie 7) Very good Review of the subbed version. It was a great movie. the only thing that bothered me was the animation, which I would say, was below the TV series' level at the time this movie came out. But it was good. I recommend the subbed version of this movie.
Dragon Ball Z: The History of Trunks (special) Good (dub), Excellent (sub) This is the best of the 2 TV specials. The sub version conveyed the despair of Trunks' future way more than the dub though. I think it was the BGM in the Japanese version, since the dub puts horrible rap music in some scenes, BTW Dragonball & Rap=No. I recommend the subbed version of this awesome TV special.
Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler (movie 6) Good (dub), Very good (sub) This movie is a sequel to Movie 5. So I'm not spoiling anything but I will say that the sub version of this movie was better(like 98% of all of the Funimation DBZ dubs). I recommend it subbed.
Dragon Ball Z: The Tree of Might (movie 3) Good (dub & sub) A review of the subbed version. Well I liked this movie but I got bored through it. This is pretty much the only DBZ movie, that I've seen, where the storytelling and the event mashing isn't too good. End the end I liked the story. It revolves around a "What-if Goku was evil?" scenario. This scenario is also further implied in the Japanese version since the main villain looks and sounds like Goku but is the complete opposite of him. It was average for me, but it was fun.
Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest (movie 2) Good (dub & sub)
Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon (movie 13) Very good A review of the subbed version. Another great DBZ film. Some consider it the best but I say that belongs to movie 12. I can recommend the subbed version, since Funimation killed parts of the movie that were important to the plot.
Excel Saga (TV) Excellent A very funny comedy anime. I really had no problem with it whatsoever except that they had so many opportunities to parody more than what they did but then they didn't. I still liked that somebody had the balls to parody genres and anime legends in a funny way though. I also thought that sometimes the comedy went a bit stale after awhile but overall a really good job.
Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture Good (dub & sub) A video game adaption anime. Now I liked it. It was pretty good. However I'm a fan of 2D fighters an KoF, that's mostly why this movie was enjoyable. If you're not a fan then don't watch it. I recommend it for KoF/Fatal Fury fans only.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) Good (dub), Excellent (sub) I thought this movie was great. It a sequel to Final Fantasy VII, arguably the greatest Final Fantay ever. So to really understand where this movie is coming from you need to have at least played Final Fantasy VII to understand it. I've played through FFVII and that made this movie all the more excellent. Now I watched the sub version of this movie and I rated it "excellent". I've watched the dub version of this movie and I gave it a "good" rating. I just thought that the dub wasn't as good as the original because of the miscasts. Not too many people sounded like how I thought they would while the subbed version nearly everybody sounded like how I thought they would. The movie's still good in dubbed it's just not as good as the Japanese one. I recommend it only if you've played FFVII in its entirety. If you've never touched the game or never finished it don't watch this movie.
Fist of the North Star (TV) Excellent An anime that should be as popular as Dragonball or Sailor Moon but not. I can say that this is one of the greatest classic anime series I've ever seen. It really set the bar for action shonen anime when it was created and influenced everything of this genre afterwards. The fights are incredible even by today's standards. The only thing I could think of that would turn people off from this series is that it was made between the years of 1984-1987, so he animation will look very dated because it was a long running TV series and to people who are used to anime from post 1998. However the animation was not a problem for me whatsoever because this series is just enjoyable. If you're a fan of shonen series or anime classics hunt down some fansubs of Hokuto No Ken. It's a great series than should not be missed by fans of action, martial arts, and classic anime. One last thing even though this is a shonen series it's very violent for a typical series of that genre.
Fist of the North Star (movie) Very good A re-telling of the first 50 or so episodes of the Fist of The North Star TV series with new plot elements. It was good. It's worth it even if it's just a generic TV series events in movie form. The animation is redone from the ground up so this production has great animation compared to the TV series. I recommend this movie but, there are two endings though. The original and the dubbed ending. I'm not spoiling anything but I'm just saying the dubbed version has a different ending than the subbed. I saw the subbed ending, which is considered the original ending but the dubbed ending is actually the original ending.
Fist of the North Star 2 (TV) Excellent Sequels aren't always as good as the originals but Hokuto No Ken 2 was amazing. HnK also proved why it still is the master of shounen in my book. I highly recommend it.
Genesis Climber Mospeada (TV) Decent Note: I have never seen Robotech "The Masters", the series that this was based off of this anime and used as the 3rd part of Robotech. With that said I feel like my experience with this will best reflect the quality of this series. Now, the thing is that this series is 25 episodes long yet it employs tactics that I've seen in happen in 100+ episode series. In the past I've sat through 7 episodes of One Piece in one sitting, 13 episodes of Sailor Moon in one sitting, 18 episodes of Dragonball in one sitting, and I've watched the entire MSG TV series, considered by some to be very boring, multiple times yet it was very hard to sit through even 2 episodes of this series. Really, the killer of this anime for me was that most of the episodes are filler, and since most of the episodes were filler, the storytelling and progression was painstakingly slow. In the end I had some fun with this series, it had some decent action, had some good mecha designs, and it had some good character development, but it just has some of the worst storytelling that I've seen from a mecha anime series. I mean the way it presented the story was more like watch the first 3 episodes then watch some here and there then watch the last 3 and you've got the story.
Last Order Final Fantasy VII (OAV) Good Re-tells Cloud's past in FFVII in anime form. I was kinda disappointed in Cloud's emoness, but Zack really shines in this movie. I recommend it for fans of FFVII.
Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (OAV) Very good (dub & sub)
Mobile Fighter G Gundam (TV) Very good (dub & sub) This is a Gundam series that does not takes place in the in the Universal Century and is an alternate Gundam series so no knowledge of the UC is required. G Gundam takes place in Future Century 60. This is a love it or hate it series. The hate it part comes from that this series is more "Super-Robot" esque than an average Gundam series. So it's on the lines of anime like Mazinger Z, Tesujin #8 and other super robot TV series. To me, it's good in its own right. I liked this series. I say that if you don't like "Super Robot" elements in a "Real Robot" anime then don't watch this. If you don't care then I recommend it.
Mobile Suit Gundam (TV) Very good (dub), Excellent (raw) This is a Gundam series that takes place in the Universal Century. This would fall in the year 0079 and is the 1st gundam series chronological to the UC. This is the first ever Gundam TV series made back in 1979. I enjoyed this series it was great. If you're looking to get anywhere farther in the UC past 0083 then this is where you start. Keep in mind though that the animation is dated(since it was made in 1979*duh*) but I challenge you to look past any animation flaws or problems this TV series has and follow the story elements, then you'll see why this series is great. I recommend it
Mobile Suit Gundam - The Movie Trilogy Weak (dub), Masterpiece (sub) This is a Gundam series that takes place in the Universal Century. This would fall in the year 0079. This was a re-edit of the TV series into three movies. "Mobile Suit Gundam", "Soldiers of Sorrow" and "Encounters In Space". Now this is the only Gundam movie compilation that has ever worked right. The story of the TV series transfers very well, so much so, that this Movie Trilogy can be used as a substitute to the TV series it was based on, although IMO, I recommend that you see the TV series all the way through first then the movie trilogy second, but that's just me. I recommend this movie but here are some guidelines to making this a "masterpiece" rather than "alright" rating. Don't watch the dubbed version, and find the VHS edition subbed, rather DVD version. The DVD versions just aren't as good as the VHS versions. And keep in mind that this was made in the early 80's and parts of the animation come from the TV series which didn't have too spectacular animation, so things aren't going to look great from an animation standpoint.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (OAV) Very good (dub & sub) This is a Gundam series that takes place in the Universal Century. This would fall in the year 0079 and is the 3rd series chronological to the UC. This is the shortest OVA series in the UC and probably one of the only standlone UC gundam anime series. I say that if you couldn't get into the 1st series then this OVA might make you watch it because this is so good. I recommend it.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (OAV) Very good (dub & sub) This is a Gundam series that takes place in the Universal Century. This would fall in the year 0083 and is the 4th series chronological to the UC. I liked this OVA. It bridges the gap between the series of Mobile Suit Gundam and Zeta Gundam. It does not involve anybody from either of those series but it helps bridge things. Now this was made after Zeta Gundam but I watched it before I watched Zeta. It helped me understand Zeta better than it would have if I went without it. I recommend it.
Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (movie) Decent This is a Gundam series that takes place in the Universal Century. This would fall in the year 0123 and is the 8th gundam production chronological to the UC. This could have been so much more than it was. F91 was supposed to be a new TV series but got scrapped halfway through and became a movie instead. Now The movie itself was alright for me but it really lacks in plot since it's impossible to cram 50+ episodes worth of plot into one two hour movie. So in turn, things happen for no reason, characters appear then disappear for the rest of the movie and never reappear, the commander didn't have a name, there was no point for the cast to be on a capital cruiser they just were, if you don't pay attention you're screwed, etc... I think this would have been a great Gundam anime if it was a TV series like how it was originally planned to be. This would be high up there if it were, but unfortunately it wasn't. I say watch it if you've been into the UC.
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (TV) Decent (dub & sub) This is a Gundam series that does not takes place in the in the Universal Century and is an alternate Gundam series so no knowledge of the UC is required. Gundam Seed takes place in Cosmic Era 71. This series people always think is the best but it's very far from it. I just didn't like the fact that 60% this show has reused elements from various UC series, and 40% original. And it's not really original in its originality department either. Another thing I don't like is the amount of teen agnst that goes on in this show. I swear like I felt like I was watching a teen drama shows that you'd see on Noggin like, Degrassi or Summerland, rather than a Gundam series. And the story blew so much mostly because it was unoriginal. The only thing that helped it were the final 5 or so episodes which were very good. Overall it's got some good action sequences but even those are very unrealistic compared to older Gundam series. And while the animation is nice(since this was made in 2002), I feel that this series was trying to hide behind it's animation rather than show the flaws of the series itself plotwise and story telling wise. I don't recommend this series if you're a die-hard Gundam fan because you'll be disappointed. If youu're new to Gundam I recommend starting with another series other than SEED.
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (TV) Bad This is a Gundam series that does not takes place in the in the Universal Century and is an alternate Gundam series so no knowledge of the UC is required. It is a sequel to Gundam Seed and takes place in Cosmic Century 73. I'm going to honest if you liked SEED then this series will disappoint you, If you didn't like SEED, before you'll like this series less. If you liked this series you're being a fanboy. There's nothing good that comes out of this series. Just forget that this series ever existed and don't watch it.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing (TV) Good (dub & sub) This is a Gundam series that does not takes place in the in the Universal Century and is an alternate Gundam series so no knowledge of the UC is required. Gundam Wing takes place in After Colony 195. This was the first Gundam TV series to be dubbed into English. Now this series has a whole lot of controversy. The controversy is that this is either a "love it" or "hate it" series much like Gundam SEED and many other alternate universe Gundam series. The thing from the "hate it" side says mostly that, "this series is hypocritical". Yes this series is very hypocritical. It preaches things like "war is bad", and "be pacifistic" yet the people who preach these themes do things that a person who would say that would not do. The people from the "love it" side say that it makes you thing intensively about war and issues. Personally, I have to side with the hate it side more because the characters and the themes are infact hypocritical. I can't say that I didn't enjoy this series. It was good. I just don't like the sheer hypocrisy that's in this series.
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OAV) Good (dub & sub) This is a Gundam series that does not takes place in the in the Universal Century and is an alternate Gundam series so no knowledge of the UC is required. Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz takes place in After Colony 196. This is a sequel to the Gundam Wing TV series and there is an OVA and a Movie version of this production. I thought it was good since I thought that the TV series ending thoroughly sucked. The movie version does a good job of compiling the OVAs much better than the usual OVA-Movie transitions. It shows more footage and it has all of the footage of the OVA combined into one feature. I say watch it to finish Gundam Wing for good if you saw it.
Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (TV) Good This is a Gundam series that takes place in the Universal Century. This would fall in the years of 0088-0089 and is the 6th series chronological to the UC. This series is not as bad as some Gundam fans say. I liked this series. Not as much as Zeta or Victory Gundam, but I liked it better than SEED Destiny. If you go into this series with an open mind and no bias against it whatsoever you'll like it.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (movie) Excellent (dub), Masterpiece (sub) This is a Gundam series that takes place in the Universal Century. This would fall in year 0093 and is the 7th gundam show chronologically to the UC. This is the greatest Gundam movie ever. The animation here is amazing even by current standards. The story effectively ends all previous conflict in the UC. If you've watched UC gundam then this movie will not disappoint but knowledge of all the previous TV series, that involve the characters present in this movie, Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta Gundam, and ZZ Gundam are necessary to understand what's going on. But this is highly recommended.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (OAV) Very good (dub & sub) This is a Gundam series that takes place in the Universal Century. This would fall in the year 0079 and is the 2nd series chronological to the UC. I thought it was really good. 08th MS Team gives a better perspective of the grunt soldiers of the One Year War. So I'd say that this is the most realistic gundam series. The dub is good though. it's more vulgar than the sub version, but that kinda excusable because we're dealing with people in the military and not people at school or work. I recommend this and I also recommend this if you're trying hard to get into the Universal Century Gundam series.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team, Miller's Report (movie) Very good (dub & sub) A movie taking place between two episodes in the 08th MS Team OVA series. It fleshes out an event that happens in the TV series but you could go without it.
Mobile Suit SD Gundam (OAV/movie) Good These are shorts that were made in the mid 1980s involving Gundam characters from "Mobile Suit Gundam", "Zeta Gundam", and "ZZ Gundam". Now this isn't to be confused with "SD Gundam Force". This series is actually good. It's pretty much an ultimate parody show for UC Gundam fans. So the jokes that happen throughout this most likely will not be funny if you've never seen the three series I mentioned earlier. I recommend it if you have seen those series though because they're funny and hilarious.
Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (TV) Excellent This is a Gundam series that takes place in the Universal Century. This would fall in the years of 0153-0154 and is the final series chronological to the UC. The only other Gundam series that can stand up to the awesomeness of Zeta. This is the last series in the UC timeline, and it's great. I loved this series so much. One of the only UC Gundam series that require no knowledge of previous events. The only thing that might turn people off is it's slow pace and it's kinda depressing. But I loved this series. I recommend it.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (TV) Masterpiece (dub & sub) This is a Gundam series that takes place in the Universal Century. This would fall in the years of 0087-0088 and would be the 5th gundam series chronologically to the UC. This is arguably darkest gundam series ever created. Even though it takes place after 0083 Stardust Memories, knowledge of the first Gundam TV series and/or Movie Trilogy, Mobile Suit Gundam, is required and knowledge of 0083 is not required. This series really was a masterpiece, that's all I can say about it. I recommend it.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam: A New Translation (movies) Decent This is a movie re-edit of the Zeta TV series. I did not like this trilogy. It ruins the essence of the TV series by 180'ing the atmosphere, and it cut way too much out from the TV series to a point where it alters the story. Don't watch this movie thinking it's like other Gundam Movies of TV series where you can watch the show in a weekend because if you do then you'll be confused as hell. Just watch the Zeta TV series instead of these movies.
One Piece: Nejimaki Shima no Bōken (movie 2) Excellent
One Piece: The Movie Good A Pretty good movie. I wasn't expecting much, since Toei made it and all, but I liked it.
Outlaw Star (TV) Very good (dub & sub) You should watch this series dubbed and subbed. It's a fun series to watch. I recommend it.
Pokémon (TV) Good (dub & sub & raw) I've watch all of this. Well mostly everything before Advanced Generation. I thought it was good for the most part. I have to say, that if you're one of those people who think the Japanese one is better isn't really all that better than the dub. The Japanese version's funnier and takes itself more seriously, but they're more or less the same.
Pokémon: The First Movie (movie 1) Decent (edit.dub), Very good (raw) Well the reason the original Japanese version of this movie was better was because the dub changed the entire meaning of the movie. I mean if you haven't seen it I'm not going to say a too much but, the plot and theme is twisted into something that it shouldn't be. And the dub replaces the BGM and pretty much re-writes the script. Which is very odd because Pokemon at this time was translated very well even though it was edited. I recommend you find a RAW of the Japanese version.
Record of Lodoss War (OAV) Excellent
Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight (TV) Very good
Robotech (U.S. TV) Not really good A combination of three unrelated anime series, Macross, Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada. It was alright until after the "Macross" portion then everything fell apart. I recommend watching the three anime series that inspired this and not even bother with Robotech.
Rurouni Kenshin (TV 1996) Very good (dub & sub) This was a great show. It falls downhill half-way through because of alright-god-awful filler arcs but I still recommend this anime dubbed and subbed.
Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection (OAV) Awful (dub), Not really good (sub) I really didn't like this OVA. It "concludes" the anime series but, it changes a few characters personalties to fit this faux dreary mood, which Rurouni Kenshin is not known for to have since the anime and manga series are fun and filled with lots of laughs. And it doesn't make sense half the time because characters are too busy being emo to think straight. I don't recommend this and say just read vol. 18-28 of the manga to get the real story rather than this adaption.
Rurouni Kenshin: The Motion Picture Awful (dub), Good (sub) It was good. Reminded me of an extra long episode rather than a movie though. Takes place after the Kyoto arc of the TV series so you know when to watch it.
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) So-so (dub), Excellent (sub) I saw this OVA subbed and I liked it alot. This is a prequel to the TV series but whatever you do, do not watch this before the TV series. If you do then the TV/Manga series will be absolutely ruined. And as good as this OVA was, the manga version of this is even better.
Sailor Moon (TV) Bad (edit.dub), Excellent (sub) I'm only going to talk about the sub version since if I did a review of the dub I'd write a book. This series was great. This is the 1st of 5 Sailor moon series and It covers episodes 1-46 of the entire "Sailor Moon" franchise. So this would be the place to start. It's one of those few series that you actually feel as if you're in the same place as the characters and walking along with them. And it's an anime that can go from being absolutely hilarious to being the most serious moments in anime you'll ever see. I can only recommend this soon to be classic. I don't recommend the dub though unless you really want to not get the full experience of this series. So watch it Japanese w/subs.
Sailor Moon R (TV) Weak (edit.dub), Very good (sub) My comments on "Sailor Moon" apply to Sailor Moon R. This is the 2nd out of 5 Sailor Moon series and covers episodes 47-89 of the "Sailor Moon" franchise. I consider the second weakest out of the 5 series only because the BGM soundtrack does not change too much and for the questionable filler arc. Mostly for this entire series mostly all the bgm is re-used from the last series. I was personally looking for new BGM, which there are some new pieces, but there aren't enough. Also this series has the worst filler arc in the history of the entire "Sailor Moon" franchise, as said earlier, lasting for 14 long episodes. Once that passes the series is quite enjoyable but during that filler arc it's like walking through Hell. I still recommend that you watch it Japanese and subtitled for the full effect.
Sailor Moon R: The Movie So-so (dub), Very good (sub) The first of 3 Sailor Moon movies and this was the best movie for me. The plot and action are actually really good and the animation is done better than most Sailor Moon productions. I recommend it.
Sailor Moon S (TV) Awful (dub), Masterpiece (sub) I'm talking about the subbed version. This is the 3rd of 5 Sailor Moon series and it covers episodes 90-127 of the "Sailor Moon" franchise". This is the series that I consider the best out of the 5 Sailor Moon series and from after this series on everything goes "downhill". Not far downhill but this series just couldn't be matched by later ones. The BGM finally gets newer pieces and most of the old BGM is mixed in. So this is as good as it gets for some of the greatest anime BGM ever. New characters are introduced, and rarely are there filler episodes for this series. Nearly all of the episodes have something to do with the story Some say the story here starts to take a "dark" tone too. But this series is not anywhere as dark themed and toned as the 5th series "Sailor Stars". I'd say that this is still typical Sailor Moon and is on the level of where the First series and "R" were in terms of tone. Meaning that the tone here is no different from the two series before it. And the most hilarious episodes from all of Sailor Moon come from this series. I don't recommend that you start here as this is the 3rd part in a continuing series but if you're going to watch it again, watch it subbed.
Sailor Moon S: The Movie Worst ever (dub), Very good (sub) The second of 3 Sailor Moon movies. The outers senshi are in this movie, and the story of this movie is heartwarming. I recommend it.
Sailor Moon Sailor Stars (TV) Excellent This is the final Sailor Moon series going from episodes 167-200. Thankfully, this season has never been dubbed, officially, into English. Now this series is what I would consider the darkest of all 5 series. The beginning of this series is the darkest tone I have ever seen from a Sailor Moon TV series. This series does tie everything together and ends Sailor Moon for good. I would still say that this series is the darkest one that has ever been made. Keep in mind that this is the last series and it should be seen if you want to finish Sailor Moon. Overall though I recommend it.
Sailor Moon SuperS (TV) Weak (dub), Good (sub) Talking about the subbed version. This is the 4th out of 5th Sailor Moon series and it covers episodes 128-166. Now I consider this the weakest Sailor Moon series out of the 5 because the "monster of the week" format that Sailor Moon uses starts to get old here. To make things worse, the fights are the least interesting to watch in this series compared to the other series. And, most of this series is filler. Not until the last 8 or so episodes do we actually get any plot. So in the end I thought this series was good but it is the weakest Sailor Moon series that has been created. But I still recommend it because it has story elements that tie in with the last series.
Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie Weak (dub), Good (sub) This movie was alright. I thought that the plot was kinda clichéd here but it was still enjoyable. I say it's up to you if you want to watch it, because this movie I don't consider a must see.
(The) Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross (TV) Not really good I wasn't terrible but the finished product ended up being completely confusing and incoherent. I want watch it again.
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross (TV) Masterpiece One of the 3 series used to create Robotech. I thought this was way, way better than Robotech personally. Even though the story is more or less the same Macross felt "different" from Robotech. I highly recommend it.
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (movie) Masterpiece Basically an alternate re-telling of the TV series with a new ending. It's great. I for one thought this movie was going to suck but it was much much better than I thought. I recommend that you watch this only after completing the TV series though.
Tenchi in Tokyo (TV) Decent (dub & sub) This Tenchi series disappointed me. The ending sucks so much in comparison to the series. I can't say that I didn't enjoy the series, one the greatest anime composers ever scored this series, and there are typical bits of Tenchi comedy. However in comparison everything feels "toned down" from other Tenchi series in the line of Fanservice and Comedy, two things that drive Tenchi. The dub didn't help either. The Tenchi series "trilogy" is know to have some of the best dubs in anime history but the dub here was very bland in comparison. 4 voices are replaced. Tenchi's Father and Grandfather are done by the same VA, Mishoshi's VA was changed but it's not noticeable unless you do some extra research and last but not least, Kiyone is replaced with Wendee Lee. Now, I think Wendee Lee is a good English dub VA but her Kiyone is quite possibly the worst role she has ever done to date. All she does is make Kiyone sound like she's forcfully yelling at somebody even when she's normally talking. The dub was pretty medicore in comparison to the amazing Tenchi OVAs and Universe TV series dubs, and it's a real shame too. I say watch it if you liked Muyo! and Universe. But it's not really recommended.
Tenchi Muyo! (OAV 1/1992) Excellent (dub & sub) The best Tenchi OVA ever. Comedy, action, and romance are all here. Definitely watch this anime.
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (OAV 2/1994) Excellent (dub & sub) (Comment same as Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki)
Tenchi Universe (TV) Excellent (dub & sub) This was the first Tenchi TV series. It basically retells the OVAs in a new story. So you could watch this at any point. It's recommended.
Yu Yu Hakusho The Movie: Poltergeist Report (movie 2/1994) Good (dub), Very good (sub) An actual feature length movie about the TV series. What I'm glad about is that it's actually an original story and not an alternate retelling. The animation is amazing considering that it was made in 1994 and in comparison to the TV series. If you liked Yu Yu Hakusho then you'll love this movie. The dub cast is not the same as Funimation's dub cast for the TV series however, the voices and dubbing are good and tolerable all except Kuwabara who sounds like a 50 year old Black preacher a lot of the time. I was expecting the dub to be horrible, but overall it's alright and non-cringe worthy.
Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files (TV) Very good (dub & sub) Another shonen action martial arts anime. I liked this series. The action's great and the animation while dated looking at the beginning, improves greatly halfway through. The storyline, surprisingly, is continuous and has not filler whatsoever. That's good and bad at the same time. Good because filler is worthless especially when it does not go anywhere. Bad because, If you skip one or two episodes you're screwed from then on. What really disappointed me the most was the last arc. I'm not going to spoil the arc for you but the action becomes too DBZish for my taste. Some may like it, some may not. I felt that it did not work for this series because of there was previous emphasis on realistic combat rather than, "Look at my, SUPAA LASAAAAAAZ!!!!! That was the only real downer for me but I the series is still good overall I recommend this anime.
Zoids (TV) Very good (edit.dub & raw) The first Zoids anime series. It's considered better than Zoids ZERO that came after it, but I consider it just as good. The plus here is that it has an ongoing/continuing storyline rather than the random battleness of Zoids ZERO. I recommend it.
Zoids/ZERO (TV) Very good (edit.dub & raw) The second Zoids anime series. Zoids ZERO is considered to be worse than the original Zoids. It's good still to me. Some people don't like the ramdomness of the story but it comes around full circle in the end. I recommend it still though.
