A.I.C.O. -Incarnation- (ONA) Good Interesting sci-fi story, but with fairly average characters. A lot of its emotional moments fall flat.
Aeon Flux (U.S. TV) Very good The best thing to ever come from MTV's Liquid Television.
Akame ga KILL! (TV) Decent Never lived up to the hype. All in all, it was just a typical shounen anime: entertaining, but without depth.
Aki Sora (OAV) Not really good
Akira (movie) Excellent Among the best of classic 1980s sci-fi.
Another (TV) Very good Has a few standard horror clichés and contrived cliffhangers, but still effectively builds up the tension and dread from episode to episode before unleashing a "Higurashi-style" climax of wanton bloody mayhem.
Armored Fleet Dairugger XV (TV) Not really good The "other Voltron." Watched a lot of this as a kid, but don't remember very much about it.
Attack on Titan (TV) Very good Excellent action, engaging story and interesting characters. Perfectly set up for a second season.
Attack on Titan (TV 2/2017) Very good
B Gata H Kei - Yamada’s First Time (TV) So-so
Bakemonogatari (TV) Excellent A spooky little animé with a unique artistic style, loads of inside jokes and word-play, and a healthy dose of fanservice.
Bastard!! (OAV) Good Gives off a "Berserk" vibe. Probably needed a few more episodes to really flesh out a decent story.
Battle Angel (OAV) Good Typical dystopian story with interesting visuals and depressing atmosphere.
Berserk (TV 1997) Very good Brutal, dark and unrelenting.
Berserk (TV 2016) Good So great to finally see a continuation of this story, even if it pales in comparison to the original.
Berserk (TV 2017) Good
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I - The Egg of the King (movie) Very good
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc II - The Battle for Doldrey (movie) Excellent
Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III - The Advent (movie) Excellent Unbelievable climax to the Golden Age Arc. Better than the original series.
Black Lagoon (TV) Good What a Hollywood summer blockbuster would look like in animated form. Completely over-the-top action and proud of it.
Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail (OAV) Good Even more insane than the first two seasons.
Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage (TV) Good No different from the first season: nonstop over-the-top action.
Brynhildr in the Darkness (TV) Decent Interesting premise, but wastes its potential through rushed pacing and inability to set a consistent tone.
Claymore (TV) Very good Littered with standard shounen clichés and tropes, but the character development and world-building is really well done. This animé truly deserves a second season.
Corpse Party: Tortured Souls (OAV) Decent Lots of insane gore, but a rushed story with bland characters brings it down.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Excellent A futuristic sci-fi film noir with a "wild west" vibe set to jazz, blues, and rock-n-roll. Possibly the best animé soundtrack ever.
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Masterpiece Ranks among the best episodes of the original series. An instant classic.
CROSS ANGE Rondo of Angel and Dragon (TV) Decent
Dallos (OAV) Decent Old school sci-fi. Not bad.
Darker than Black (TV) Good Very slow to start and the episodic nature breaks up the plot too much. But as it develops, it grows into an intriguing and interesting story.
Death Note (TV) Excellent Best episodes are in the first half with the constant scheming and counter-scheming between Light and L.
Death Parade (TV) Very good This anime pulls a lot of emotional strings. A unique tale of the afterlife.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (TV) Very good
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train Very good
Devil Hunter Yohko (OAV) So-so A strangely disjointed series in style and tone, it never really reaches its potential.
DEVILMAN crybaby (ONA) Very good
Dimension W (TV) Decent An interesting premise botched by an unwieldy story with too many unimportant and boring characters.
Dragon's Dogma (ONA) So-so
Dragonar Academy (TV) Weak Clichés and fanservice. Also, fanservice clichés.
Elfen Lied (TV) Very good An odd combination of sci-fi, gore, action, tragic romance, and ecchi... but it works. Has there ever been a more talked about opening sequence than this one?
Elfen Lied (OAV) Decent The flashback scene to Lucy's past is excellent, but the rest of this OAV is weak.
ERASED (TV) Excellent Engaging storytelling with a sci-fi twist. Well-defined and enjoyable characters.
Ergo Proxy (TV) Excellent Dark and gritty dystopian sci-fi with excellent opening and closing music sequences. Existentialist philosophy and pyschological mind games abound.
Expelled from Paradise (movie) Very good Unique animation style and great action scenes.
Fate/stay night (TV) Decent Watchable and entertaining, but nothing special.
Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel I. presage flower (movie) Excellent
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (TV) Very good A fantastic adaptation that is miles ahead of the original produced by Deen.
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (TV 2) Very good High quality animation and engaging story, but a bit more uneven than the first cour.
Fate/Zero (TV) Excellent A great series all around: exciting action, interesting dialogue, and a compelling story.
Fate/Zero (TV 2) Excellent Second cour of Fate/Zero is even stronger than the first. A fantastic prequel to the Fate/stay night franchise.
FLCL (OAV) Good
Flowers of Evil (TV) Very good Very effectively creates a sense of building tension, uneasiness, dread, and manic desperation. The rotoscoping takes some getting used to, but really adds to the realistic gritty feel of the show. The worst mark against it is that it stops just before getting to the best (most insane) part of the source material.
Freezing (TV) Weak Very awkward fanservice and repetitive battles overshadow what could have been an interesting plot.
Freezing Vibration (TV) Not really good A deeper and more engaging story than the first season, even though it falls prey to most of the same silly tropes.
From the New World (TV) Good The story builds slowly and unevenly, but has a strong finale. Animation during some episodes is a bit weak.
(The) Future Diary (TV) Good This show has some really great plot twists, but also some ridiculous character reactions/interactions and plot holes. On the whole, it's an enjoyable show, but it really wasted its potential to be something exceptional.
Gantz (TV) Good An interesting premise that suffers somewhat from poor pacing and an inexplicably sudden ending.
(The) Garden of Sinners (movie series) Masterpiece The non-linear and slow-paced story takes some getting used to, but it is intriguing and ultimately rewarding for the attentive viewer. The artwork is simply stunning -- the most beautiful I have ever seen in an animé.
(The) Garden of Sinners/recalled out summer (movie) Very good Not quite up to the quality of the original series, but still a worthwhile and interesting side story.
Gatchaman (TV) So-so It's still a pretty standard kid-oriented super-hero show, but the original unedited version is quite a bit darker and more violent than the bowdlerized mess Sandy Frank put on the air in the '70s.
Genesis Climber Mospeada (TV) Good Another great animé used to form Robotech, though this one hasn't aged quite as well as Macross.
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Masterpiece Classic sci-fi masterpiece.
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Very good Intelligent world-building and interesting stories, but lacking the overall ambience of the movies.
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Good Well-made movie with great animation, but the "time travel will screw things up" plot is a bit predictable.
God Eater (TV) So-so Excellent animation wasted on a formulaic story with boring characters and little personality.
Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (movie) Good
Gunslinger Girl (TV) Very good A very well-made show, it has a lot more emotional heart than most short action series.
GYO: Tokyo Fish Attack (OAV) So-so Hits all the tropes of a low-budget horror B-movie.
Hanamonogatari (TV) Very good Unique animation and clever wordplay - in other words, another great chapter of the Monogatari series.
Hell Girl (TV) Good Would have been considerably better if the first cour had not been so annoyingly repetitive.
High School DxD (TV) Decent Some fun moments, but never really rises above a standard harem setup except in sheer quantity of fanservice.
High School DxD BorN (TV) Decent Incredibly, this season seems to have increased the amount of fanservice over the previous two.
High School DxD New (TV) Decent Pretty much the same as the first season.
High School of the Dead (TV) Good Total guilty pleasure: large-breasted women, machine guns, and a zombie apocalypse. What more do you need?
Highschool of the Dead: Drifters of the Dead (OAV) Weak Completely pointless.
Jormungand (TV) Decent A poor man's Black Lagoon. Similar style/atmosphere, but inferior in almost every way.
Jormungand Perfect Order (TV) Good A definite improvement over the first season of Jormungand.
Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (TV) Very good Entertaining clone of Shingeki no Kyojin.
Kemonozume (TV) Very good A bizarre wild ride - a great story animated in a highly unorthodox style.
Kill la Kill (TV) Decent Frenetic, haphazard, and wildly over-the-top. Not nearly so deep as its superfans would have you believe, but despite its flaws, it turns out to be quite entertaining.
Kite (OAV) So-so A bit of the old ultraviolence. Has some interesting character moments, but some of the action is ridiculously over-the-top and the explicit hentai scenes are unnecessary.
Kizumonogatari Part 1: Tekketsu (movie) Very good
Kizumonogatari Part 2: Nekketsu (movie) Very good
Kizumonogatari Part 3: Reiketsu (movie) Very good
Knights of Sidonia (TV) Excellent Creative hard sci-fi story and fantastic CGI + sound effects. A great show in every way!
Knights of Sidonia: Battle for Planet Nine (TV) Very good Great followup to the first season that only suffers a bit from unnecessarily relying on worn-out animé harem tropes on occasion.
Koyomimonogatari (ONA) Very good Cute individual short stories, but same "monogatari" quality.
Kubikiri Cycle: Aoiro Savant to Zaregoto Tsukai (OAV) Very good
Lily C.A.T. (OAV) So-so A shameless ripoff of both "Alien" and "The Thing", but that's what actually makes it watchable.
Lunar Legend Tsukihime (TV) Decent Not a bad show overall, but lacking a lot of explanation, as if too many ideas were rushed over or skipped. This VN deserves a full-quality ufotable remake with 24+ episodes.
Macross 7 (TV) So-so Such a waste of a good franchise. A very thin story with weak characters drawn out over far too many episodes.
Macross Plus (OAV) Very good Beautiful, near-cinema-quality animation.
Mezzo Forte (OAV) So-so Very similar to "Kite." Ultraviolent, over-the-top, and explicit.
Michiko & Hatchin (TV) Decent The Brazilian music and faux-Brazilian setting are the highlights of this animé, but the story itself is merely average.
Mirai Nikki Redial (OAV) So-so If you are going through the effort to remake the ending of Mirai Nikki, why waste more than half the time on stupid beach scenes?
Monogatari Series Second Season (TV) Very good Excellent continuation of the Monogatari Series, in the same quirky style as the earlier installments.
Monster (TV) Masterpiece The story moves slowly, but it builds relentlessly. Character development is excellent and the character design artwork is unique and realistic. This is one of the very few animés that could be directly adapted into a live-action drama without coming across as ridiculous.
Motto To Love Ru (TV) Not really good
My First Girlfriend is a Gal (TV) So-so
Nekomonogatari (Black) (TV) Very good Another excellent chapter in the Monogatari series.
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Excellent Groundbreaking "psychological horror" animé that suffers from a truncated incoherent ending. Fortunately, "End of Evangelion" fixes this problem.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Excellent The true and appropriate ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Nisemonogatari (TV) Very good Same as Bakemonogatari, but with extra fanservice.
No Game, No Life (TV) Good Mostly an otaku wish-fulfillment story. Fun to watch, even though not quite as clever as it thinks it is.
Noir (TV) Very good Kind of slow and cliché at the start, but it builds up into a pretty entertaining story by the end. And the music is really great, too.
One Punch Man (TV) Excellent Great action scenes, excellent animation, and hilarious comedy = a perfect combination.
Owarimonogatari (TV) Very good Monogatari series = awesome as always.
Owarimonogatari (specials) Very good
Paprika (movie) Very good Interesting sci-fi movie with aspects of a psychological thriller.
Parasyte -the maxim- (TV) Very good Excellent sci-fi/horror with a dash of comedy.
Patema Inverted (movie) Very good Interesting premise and well-executed story with some social commentary thrown in. The villian is a bit too cliché, but overall an enjoyable film with a nice plot twist at the end.
Perfect Blue (movie) Excellent Fantastic psychological thriller. Keeps you on the edge of your seat questioning reality the entire time.
(The) Perfect Insider (TV) Good Very cool and creepy mystery story. Would love to see these characters return for future stories.
Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ (TV) Good Interesting story with characters you actually care about.
(The) Promised Neverland (TV) Excellent
Psycho-Pass (TV) Masterpiece Dystopian future crime drama with fascinating multidimensional characters, beautiful artwork, a captivating storyline, and thought-provoking psychological undertones. Simply an incredible animé.
Psycho-Pass (movie) Very good A proper sequel to the original Psycho-Pass series.
Psycho-Pass 2 (TV) Good Not nearly as well-plotted or intelligent as the original, but still an interesting and entertaining series.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) Excellent Dark, psychological thriller with a "magical girl" story wrapped around it, enchanced by a strong soundtrack and animation style.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 1: Beginnings Excellent Same as the original series, but remade with superior quality art and animation.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 2: Eternal Masterpiece The pinnacle of the Madoka Magica story, now in cinematic quality. Fantastic music and animation with a powerful and compelling story.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica The Movie Part 3: Rebellion Excellent A somewhat unnecessary extension to the Madoka Magica story, but still on a par with the original in terms of animation and emotion.
Pupa (TV) Awful Trash.
RIN - Daughters of Mnemosyne (TV) Very good A fascinating blend of crime drama, sci-fi, Norse mythology, and s**t that just gets more insane with every episode.
Robotech (U.S. TV) Good The "gateway animé" of my generation. Still fun to watch.
Robotech II: The Sentinels (U.S. OAV) Good Not completely satisfying except as a "might have been." The full Sentinels story was finally released in book form, but it's a shame that it never got fleshed out as an animé.
Sankarea: Undying Love (TV) Good Simple and cute love story. Doesn't really do a lot with its potential.
School Days (TV) Not really good Having one of the most awesome final lines ever ("It was a lie after all. There's nobody inside.") did not make up for suffering through the previous 11 episodes of ridiculously far-fetched high-school soap-opera, but it did keep it from being a complete waste of time.
Scum's Wish (TV) Very good
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) Very good Mind-bending psychological drama.
Shiki (TV) Very good Strange character designs and somewhat uneven pacing, but the relentlessly dark final story arc is phenomenal. The 2 OAV episodes are also among the best of the series.
Steins;Gate (TV) Excellent An intriguing time-travel story whose characters interact well together and are fun to watch. A well-balanced mix of humourous and dramatic moments, and you really have to pay attention to keep all of the details straight.
Sunday Without God (TV) Decent Beautiful artwork and an interesting concept, but the story is fragmented and directionless.
(The) Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross (TV) Decent The weakest link among the three animés mashed together to form Robotech.
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross (TV) Very good This classic mecha animé holds up surprisingly well today.
(The) Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? (movie) Very good This re-imagining of the Macross story is as good as (or better than) the original.
Terror in Resonance (TV) Good
Time of Eve (movie) Excellent Beautiful movie with exquisitely-drawn artwork that delves deeply into philosophical questions about the nature of humanity.
To Love Ru: Darkness (TV) So-so
To Love-Ru (TV) Not really good
To Love-Ru (OAV) Not really good
To Love-Ru -Trouble- Darkness (OAV) Not really good
To Love-Ru -Trouble- Darkness (OAV 2) Not really good
Tokko (TV) Decent The horror story is interesting, but the art and animation are a bit "iffy," and the ending is ridiculous.
Tokyo Ghoul (TV) Good A good story that had potential to be great, but was cut off too abruptly in the final episode. Hopefully the second season can help it flesh out its ideas.
Tokyo Ghoul √A (TV) Good First episode would have been an excellent finish to the original season, but as a whole, this animé suffers from the same problems as the first season, right down to another non-conclusive ending.
Tsukimonogatari (TV) Very good Monogatari back for more and great as always!
Urotsukidōji: Legend of the Overfiend (OAV) Bad Seriously, WTF!?!?
Ushio & Tora (TV) Good A standard shounen, but the comedic banter between the two leads keeps it fun to watch.
Violet Evergarden (TV) Very good
Violet Evergarden (OAV) Good
Voltron (TV) So-so A decent animé for its time (and the age at which I first watched it), but today it feels quite dated and not really anything special.
When They Cry - Higurashi (TV) Excellent Creepy, atmospheric, suspenseful, and deliciously insane. You never know what to expect. Opening theme song is nearly perfect.
When They Cry - Kai (TV) Very good Excellent companion season to Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. Explains and ties up almost all loose ends.
When They Cry - Rei (OAV) Decent Somewhat unnecessary.
Yosuga no Sora - In solitude where we are least alone (TV) Decent Softcore hentai with twincest. Well-made and somewhat interesting, but has a very high "ick" factor.
your name. (movie) Excellent
