Veers's Anime

Seen all Rating Comment
5 Centimeters Per Second (movie) Excellent A powerful, beautiful, moving film. Shinkai's best work to date; full impressions: http://veers1138.livejournal.com/66672.html
Air (TV) Decent After watching this show like three times just trying to make sense of it and look for clues I might have missed, I've decided that it's too sloppy and depressing for its own good. That, and the whole second half of the show after the lolcrow part is like "huh, whu?" but that doesn't change the fact that the development of Misuzu and her aunt's relationship is really beautiful (and so is the art!). Don't watch this if you're not in the mood for a sad story.
Air (movie) So-so Series is better; this is pretty much a retelling with less supporting cast interaction.
Air In Summer (special) So-so
Akira (movie) Very good
Amagami SS (TV) Good It's a guilty pleasure......
Angel Beats! (TV) Good Really, the constant mood whiplash and bad slapstick humor really made this show hard to get into given the otherwise serious tone of the plot. At least the first episode was fantastic, the OP is great, and generally good production values made the show worth watching once.
Aoi Bungaku Series (TV) Excellent Animated Japanese Masterpiece Theater. Plz can has moar. An interesting and incredible series, but not an easy one to wtach in a hurry--of the 6 stories told in these 12 episodes, only one of them really ends on anything resembling a positivte note, and even then that one was bittersweet. Each arc stands on its own--different art styles and all, so it's more like watching a collection of OVAs instead of an actual series, making it hard to review or plug as a whole. The source materials being what they are help Aoi Bungaku escape many of the failings of modern anime (most importanlty the trend of not being able to tell a coherent story in 26 episodes, much less ONE episode). If you're looking for something different, watch Aoi Bungaku. If you're looking for something thought provoking, watch Aoi Bungaku. if you're looking for some mind-bending, gut-punching imagery and drama, watch Aoi Bungaku. Run, Melos! (episodes 9 and 10) and Hell Screen (episode 12) were my favorite episodes, though I enjoyed all the other stories, too. If you tried watching Aoi Bungaku and couldn't make it through the depressing first four episodes, I do recommend giving 9-12 a spin; they're a little less /wrists than the first arc.
Aria - The Natural (TV) Decent Seriously lacking in a hard-to-describe charm that ANIMATION and ORIGINATION have. Too much hokey supernatural and too much of that goofy giant cat. It has some good moments, but IMO watch ANIMATION and ORIGINATION and just skip this one.
Aria the Animation (TV) Excellent I looked into Aria because I read about it on some random blog where the author called it something like slice-of-life at its best. I'm not sure to what extent I will agree with that statement, but when a story can, with such simplicity and so little exposition as Aria employs, manage to get me so attached to archetypal characters, it's doing something right. It's an atmospheric combination that just clicks with me and I find it very enjoyable; very easy to slip into, very easy to relax with, but sufficiently demanding of attention that it doesn't bore.
Aria the Origination (TV) Excellent An end that is a beginning. My personal favorite of the three Aria series. This one (thankfully) leaves behind the seemingly aimless wandering of NATURAL (as well as the goofy and annoying weird spirit/cat stuff) and takes a more serious look at the girls' career advancements (that we've been waiting soooo long for!). Very beautiful series. Episode nine especially was simply stunningly wonderful.
Aria the OVA ~Arietta~ Good
Azumanga Daioh (TV) Excellent Truly the great king of slice of life comedy.
Azumanga Daioh - The Very Short Movie Good
Azumanga Web Daioh (ONA) Good
Baccano! (TV) Very good Baccano's first episode is kinda slow, but after that it really gets rolling with its interesting method of telling its story of supernatural mafia characters whose fates intertwine in a myriad of ways. It's pretty gruesome at parts, though--it is not*just* about hurting people in nasty ways, but you do need to have a stomach for violence and pain to enjoy this one.
Bakemonogatari (TV) Decent Alternates between boring and really engaging. Milage will depend on your ability to enjoy the various characters. Loved episode 12 and was glad I stuck around for that. Wish the supernatural side had been explored more, but at least there's plenty (aka TONS) of dialog to keep things moving.
Banner of the Stars (TV) Very good Jinto & Lafiel <3
Banner of the Stars II (TV) Very good A wonderful conclusion to the Crest/Banner series, and a promising beginning for the main characters.
Banner of the Stars III (OAV) Good
Berserk (TV 1997) Good Well, the "ending" kinda sucks but otherwise it's good.
Black Lagoon (TV) Excellent
Black Rock Shooter (OAV) Weak
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan (TV) Good
Blue Submarine No.6 (OAV) Good
Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai (OAV) Decent
Bokura ga Ita (TV) Decent Painfully repetitive.
Boogiepop Phantom (TV) Decent
Bunny Drop (TV) Excellent
Buso Renkin (TV) Not really good A big letdown compared to the Kenshin manga.
CANAAN (TV) Decent
Cardcaptor Sakura (TV) Good
Cardcaptor Sakura The Movie 2: The Sealed Card Good
Cardcaptor Sakura: The Movie Good
Carnival Phantasm (OAV) Very good
Castle in the Sky (movie) Very good
(The) Cat Returns (movie) Good
Cat Shit One: The Animated Series (ONA) Good
A Certain Magical Index (TV) So-so
A Certain Scientific Railgun (TV) Decent
Chobits (TV) Weak Tries to be deep and constantly fails. Relies heavily on cheap humor and innuendo.
Clannad (TV) Decent Okazaki is the best harem show male lead ever.
Claymore (TV) Good This series is nearly ruined by two dud main characters (Raki is flat out terrible, Claire is boring for half the show), but lots of action and good supporting cast keep things interesting. Though to be honest Teresa's backstory episodes were the highlight of the show and after that everything else felt kinda meh because I just couldn't get attached to any of the characters like I did Teresa. The ending was total hogwash, too, but I hear that's due to the manga being ongoing (I have not read it).
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) Very good Lelouch is such a wonderful douche. Code Geass is like what happens if you toss CLAMP, Gundam, and Death Note and an extra dose of wut in a blender. A fun show, though.
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV) Very good I swear, this show gets more and more rediculious with each episode. It's pretentious and hard to take seriously. But, ya know, it's a really FUN show. Plenty of ownage, explosions, shark jumping, and faces twisted in rage/dispair/horror/etc. in every episode. Jury's still out on whether R2's tendancy to kill off main-ish characters is good plot development or just a lazy way to tie off story threads.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Excellent
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Good
Crest of the Stars (TV) Very good CotS is a character-driven space drama, and among my favorite sci-fi anime. But don't go into this expecting Bebop or Outlaw Star. CotS is a character-driven story focusing on the relationship between Jinto, a human, and Lafiel, an Ahb, a space-faring race of genetically modified humanity. The world-building in CotS is very well done, with the fictional cultures and races being well developed. The animation is nothing really special, but the writing is excellent. Jinto and Lalfiel make such a wonderful duo and the supporting cast, which is blessedly manageable, is great and has many memorable individuals. I'd highly recommend Crest and Banner of the Stars to anyone looking for a good character-drive sci-fi. Do not watch the dub. I saw this first on TechTV and loved the show but hated the English dub. The dub sucks :(
Dance in the Vampire Bund (TV) Decent
Darker than Black (TV) So-so A very interesting setting that I felt wasn't explored enough. I felt cheated at every turn by this show's story and direction. Artwork and music were very nice. The kind of series that I wanted to like but...couldn't.
Darker than Black - Kuro no Keiyakusha: Gaiden (OAV) Good Hei kicks ass for a while. The end. This OAV is the best thing about DTB.
Darker than Black: Gemini of the Meteor (TV) Decent Well, the end is the kind of ending that makes you feel trolled and angry for wasting your time, but at least this show is still better than the first season.
Dead Leaves (OAV) So-so A crude, violent, and bizarre story about escaping a prison on the moon that probably has some deeper meaning, but I didn't spend the effort thinking too hard on this one.
Death Note (TV) Good This show is so rediculious but strangely engaging. I really enjoyed it until "that part" at which point it kinda got dumb, but at least I liked the ending. Be careful what you wish for......
Den-noh Coil (TV) Masterpiece Wonderful. Simply wonderful. Some of the best character development, artwork, and story I've seen.
Densha Otoko (live-action TV) Good
Durarara!! (TV) Good
Eden of the East (TV) Very good A very engaging series. EotE's premise is a little... silly, I guess you could say. But it's the kind of show that half the fun is piecing everything together; lots of unknowns for the audience to ponder along with the cast. Takizawa deserves honorable mention as a main character, if only because he tips the whole "amnesiac" stereotype on its head (no, seriously, his reaction is basically "hey, I have amnesia... cool!"). Social and political commentary (Japanese in particular) runs thick in this series, but in a much more serious manner than, say, something like Zetsubou Sensei. The biggest downside is that this series ends on a very incomplete not, leading into the movies that will continue the story. Don't go into this series expecting resolution, because you won't get much of that. Considering the ending, the show as a whole is definitely not "Very Good" but I liked it until the ending enough to be a bit more generous than usual.
Eden of the East: The King of Eden (movie) Good
ef: a tale of melodies (TV) Decent Not nearly as interesting as a tale of memories... :(
ef: a tale of memories (TV) Very good On the surface, just another visual novel adaptation... but if you look past some cliches, its deliciously pretentious art style, and its over-dramatization, there's some depth to this story and its cast. A very thought-provoking story with some powerful and memorable scenes.
El-Hazard 2: The Magnificent World (OAV) So-so
El-Hazard: The Magnificent World (OAV) Not really good
El-Hazard: The Wanderers (TV) So-so
Elfen Lied (TV) Good Behind the excessive violence and nudity is a very interesting story of ethics and morality that doesn't get bogged down with religion.
Ergo Proxy (TV) Very good This show was so awesome until the halfway point then it went downhill fast. Filler episodes and weird for the sake of weird bogged the show's second half down. Decent ending but ugh...that second half...
Escaflowne: The Movie Not really good
Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (movie) Excellent
(The) Familiar of Zero (TV) Not really good The only reason I check this out was because of Rie Kugimiya. The only reason I finished it was because I had nothing else to watch.
Fate/stay night (TV) Not really good Some cool fights and supporting characters, but Shirou is such a moron this show was painful to finish. Do yourself a favor and skip this show... if you want to know the story, read the VN instead.
Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (movie) Good
Fate/Zero (TV) Very good
Fate/Zero (TV 2) Excellent
Figure 17 (TV) Very good Figure 17 is a tad hard to describe. It's like a slice of life sci-fi magical girl story with no magic; a story of courage and friendship and innocence and how life and death effect them. I wanna say it's what you'd get it of you mixed Miyazaki-like storytelling with Yotsuba and Nanoha. It follows a sort of monster-of-the-week format, but the show really isn't about the fighting as much as it is a character development story about Tsubasa dealing with both the changes in her life up to and after she gains this power and with her newfound friendship with Hikaru. Set in rural Hokkaido, Figure 17 also is quite unique in its setting of a modern farming community and the show's watercolor background art made for lots of nice scenery. While there were a few parts of the story that felt a little... odd/rushed/cheap/unresolved/unnecessary which ultimately prevent me from rating this show very high, overall the characters were very well written and the main relationships were very interesting to watch develop. Tsubasa's friendship with Hikaru was especially touching; one of the best, most sincere friendships I've seen in an anime. After a wonderfully cheesy first episode full of really annoying music followed by two really slow (aka boring) episodes, Figure 17 decided to get interesting and had me gripped until the end. I know the episodes are long, so being patient for the first third of the show to get finished with may seem like asking a lot, but for me it was well worth the wait; Figure 17 told a moving story I'd recommend to fans of character-driven stories that don't mind the very young age of the main characters (fear not, while one girl is shown nekkid from a distance once, there isn't a shred of fanservice in the show--I was referring more to some people's preference for stories with main characters older than 10). While Figure 17 does have some sci-fi and does have some fights (which range from boring to quite intense to just plain wtf), the focus is really on the two girls, and though they really shine, the plot suffers for it. In my opinion it was a worthy trade. Milage will vary.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) Good
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (US CG movie) Good I don't get the hate; this isn't a BAD movie...
FLCL (OAV) Very good An interesting take on what it's like to grow up. Memorable for more than just its randomness.
From the New World (TV) Excellent
From Up On Poppy Hill (movie) Good
Fruits Basket (TV 1/2001) Very good Though this adaptation of the manga is abbreviated and leaves out a lot of the story and character development, it is still a charming story about friendship and trust. Highly recommended.
Full Metal Panic! (TV) Decent The first season has its moments but it's got so many things that drove me nuts I just can't recommend it easily. It's full of dumb pantyshots, it's got too much filler, and it tries to do too much genre mixing (the whole franchise is guilty of this, but this show especially) which just hurts the show IMO. It does have a great villain and some awesome fights and some good characters, though.
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (TV) Very good The crowning achievement of the FMP series. Very well written and animated with great villains. This is like FMP distilled into its best qualities; it doesn't suffer from the bloat and filler and the feeling of trying to do everything at once that season one suffers from.
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (OAV) Good
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (TV) Good It's funny. In small doses.
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Good Ending sucks but the cast and story are great.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (TV) Excellent
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa Good
Ga-Rei-Zero (TV) Weak
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV) Very good It's the Count! In space! With blue skin! A fun retelling of a classic story with some space/anime/futuristic spin.
(The) Garden of Sinners (movie series) Masterpiece These movies take some time to get going (ie. they are confusing as stand-alone films) but the stories and relationships they weave are pretty interesting. Bonus points for great animation and nice music.
Genius Party (movie) Good
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Good
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Good
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) Very good Charming, well-written "be careful what you wish for" story.
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Very good What this movie sets out to do, it does with devastating effectiveness. The film is a very personal work by the author. Knowing this going into the movie is more important than usual considering the content. If you're not in the mood for it, though, there is really no reason at all to watch this unless you feel like seeing it to try to understand why it's often put on a pedestal or top-X-anime-movies lists.
Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl (TV) Good
GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (TV) So-so Manga is in my top 5 but the anime is watered down so much it's pathetic. Don't watch the anime, read the manga.
Gungrave (TV) Good Ending sucks but the story and characters are awesome.
Gunslinger Girl (TV) Very good What a depressing show...
Gunsmith Cats (OAV) Very good A fun, high-energy OVA that is far too short :(
Gurren Lagann (TV) Excellent Epic incarnate.
Haganai (TV) Good
Haibane Renmei (TV) Masterpiece A beautiful, atmospheric, and relaxing story that's hard to describe... just go watch it :)
Haré+Guu (TV) Good Very loud. Very obnoxious. Very random. Very funny.
Haré+Guu Deluxe (OAV) Good
Hayate the Combat Butler (TV) Very good Some people complain that Hayate no Gotoku relies too much on references for its humor, but even if you don't get 95% of them it's still, for the most part, hilarious.
Hayate the Combat Butler!! (TV) Good
Hidamari Sketch (TV) Good
Hidamari Sketch × 365 (TV) Decent
High School of the Dead (TV) Good
Honey and Clover (TV) Very good A story about students at an art college who are trying to decide where to go with their lives. For me, it was a meaningful story. Mileage may vary. Morita is awesome.
Honey and Clover II (TV) Very good
House of Five Leaves (TV) Excellent
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) Decent
Humanity Has Declined (TV) Very good
Iria - Zeiram the Animation (OAV) Decent
Is This a Zombie? (TV) Decent
Jin-Roh - The Wolf Brigade (movie) Very good
Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu Final (OAV) Good
K-ON! (TV) Good Don't worry, Lucky Star haters--K-ON! is, so far, completely lacking in otaku humor. If you need a chillaxing slice of life show to watch, check out this one. Just don't expect anything really original; it's obviously drawing a lot from every other music- and highschool girl-oriented anime in recent history.
K-ON!! (TV 2) Decent
Kaleido Star (TV) Decent
Kamen no Maid Guy (TV) Good This show is absurd, which is where it gets its humor. I grew sick of the boob jokes, but Maid Guy's evil laugh will never not be funny.
Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens (TV) So-so
Kanon (TV 1/2002) Weak I wouldn't have finished this show if I hadn't been watching it with my sister. I can't remember a single good thing about it.
Karas (OAV) Good
Katanagatari (TV) So-so Heartless, calculated, soulless, and totally devoid of any sense of emotion. This show's cast aren't characters, they are representations of themes... Which isn't bad in and of itself; the problem is there was nothing engaging about the plot or cast. No sense of urgency. No emotion. Everything was keikaku douri up until the end. And I felt like the twist was deserved. Katanagatari had some very nice art, a few fights that looked nice (but, again, never evoked emotion, until one particular fight in the last episode). The series did succeed on several occasions to make an interesting point with a single episode (such as the "wise man" mind games episode), but ultimately failed to put the episodes together in the form of any kind of engaging tale.
Kids on the Slope (TV) Good
Kiki's Delivery Service (movie) Very good
Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World (movie) Excellent
Kino's Journey (TV) Masterpiece Don't watch this when you're depressed--Kino no Tabi addresses human nature (in both a "this is what we are" and "this is what we could be" way) and while it is very interesting and thought provoking, it isn't uplifting or pretty.
Kino's Travels: Life Goes On (movie) Excellent
Kurau: Phantom Memory (TV) Decent
Kyo no Gononi (OAV) Very good Wonderfully perverted (without ever having anything explicit). Benjamins? Pentiums? Pfff. It's all about the collarbones, baby.
Kyōran Kazoku Nikki (TV) Decent
Last Exile (TV) Very good
Living for the Day After Tomorrow (TV) Good
Lovely Complex (TV) Good Great start and good ending, but REALLY flounders in the middle. Had this show been half as long as it is, it would have been really great.
Lucky Star (TV) Very good Hit and miss... I found it pretty funny overall, past episode 4 anyway.
Lunar Legend Tsukihime (TV) Not really good Fans of the game will insist this show doesn't exist. Having no prior knowledge of Tsukihime beyond playing Melty Blood, I decided to check this out. It actually started out really good; it was pretty interesting. But the show is so short that it leaves TONS of loose ends and by the time it's over it was a big mess of "huh?"
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (TV) So-so Monster of the week magical loli series that gets good in its second half.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's (TV) Good Simple plot but has some nice character development, awesome rivalries, and tons of action.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS (TV) Decent Somewhere in that timeskip between A's and StrikerS, all the air got let out of the Nanoha bus' tires. StrikerS was a huge letdown after A's. Vita is the only one of the original cast that makes it out of this series with a shred of dignity. :(
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha The MOVIE 1st Good
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 2nd A's Very good
Magical Witch Punie-chan (OAV) Excellent
Maid Sama! (TV) Good
Mardock Scramble: The First Compression (movie) Good
Mardock Scramble: The Second Combustion (movie) Good
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Excellent Great example of taking stereotype characters and using them in such a way that it doesn't feel lame--there's more to each character than just their sterotype. Also, Kyon has got to be one of the most interesting and funny "normal guy sucked into whacky situation" characters ever. Maybe doesn't deserve all the hype it got/gets, but TMoHS is still a funny and engaging story of big dreams coming true in small ways.
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV 2009 renewal) Decent
Metropolis (movie) Good
Michiko & Hatchin (TV) Very good
Midori Days (TV) Decent
Millennium Actress (movie) Very good
Minami-ke (TV) Good
Mobile Fighter G Gundam (TV) So-so
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed (TV) Good
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OAV) Decent
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team (OAV) Very good
Momo: The Girl God of Death (TV) Good Short, so I managed to finish it but... Not my cup of tea opverall. Or maybe I just watched it at a point in time when it didn't have anything in it for me to really relate to. Several episodes I really enjoyed, several I couldn't get into. It's episodic which I tend to not mind but didn't grab me like Kino or Mushishi. It may not appeal to you if you're not in the mood for reflection. Worth noting that despite fairly simple animation, I thought most of the character designs were really good, realistic (for anime), and easy on the eyes.
Monster (TV) Excellent
Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit (TV) Very good Slow-but-steady character-centric Imperial-Japan-fantasy story with beautiful artwork, and interesting setting, and some (a very few...) of the most edge-of-your-seat action ever. Personally I think the ending is very anti-climactic and disappointing, but overall Seirei no Moribito was worth the ride.
Mushi-Shi (TV) Masterpiece Words defy the beauty of this anime. You have to experience it for yourself. (Mushishi is best in small doses.)
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) Good
My-HiME (TV) Good Second half is awesome though the ending really ruins a lot of the gravity.
My-Otome (TV) Decent Could have been worse I guess, but if you only watch one flying transforming magical girl series, don't make it this one.
NAKAIMO - My Little Sister Is Among Them! (TV) Decent
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) Very good
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Decent Overrated.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) Decent
Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion (movie) Decent
Noein - to your other self (TV) Very good
Now and Then, Here and There (TV) Masterpiece
Nyaruko: Crawling with Love! (TV) Very good
Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror (movie) Good
Only Yesterday (movie) Good
Oreimo (TV) Good
Outlaw Star (TV) Very good This show is good fun, plain and simple.
Pani Poni Dash! (TV) So-so
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt (TV) Good
Paprika (movie) Excellent
Paranoia Agent (TV) Very good
Patlabor 2: The Movie (movie 2) Masterpiece
Patlabor: The Movie (movie 1) Good
Penguindrum (TV) Excellent
Perfect Blue (movie) Very good
Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ (TV) Good The cold, emotionless assassin girl thing has been done before, but that doesn't stop Phantom form being pretty interesting so far. Watching Zwei's mentality change is both interesting and unsettling. While I liked how this show developed its two main characters (and Cal before the time skip), I felt ultimately cheated by how the ending was handled, though I don't feel that the result of the ending's events were out of place. Not as streamlined as it could have been, and I think the ending is a ding against the show that keeps it from getting a Very Good ranking. Still, slick visuals and nice character designs made this a treat for the eyes, and the story and character interaction kept me interested from start to finish.
(The) Place Promised in Our Early Days (movie) Good Beyond the Clouds' story and setting incorporates a mixture of sci-fi, fantasy, spiritual, military, and reality, and, honestly, becomes a bit of a jumbled mess that tries to do too much at once and, at least I felt, alienates the viewer from the main characters.
Planetes (TV) Very good If you can resist being annoyed by some of the cast, this show has a lot to offer in terms of character development. The animation is wonderful and the very realistic take on space is both fascinating and refreshing.
Pom Poko (movie) So-so
Porco Rosso (movie) Excellent
(Le) Portrait de Petite Cossette (OAV) So-so
Princess Jellyfish (TV) Good
Princess Mononoke (movie) Masterpiece One of the first anime movies I ever saw. Still one of my favorites. Environmentalist messages are obvious, but they don't detract from the story for me. Recommended reading: http://www.willamette.edu/~rloftus/jfilm/napier.pdf
Princess Tutu (TV) Masterpiece Do you like classical music? Dancing anteaters? Talking ducks? Examining what it meas to play a role in a story or in life? More meta than you can shake a slipper at? A great sense of humor with serious and dramatic story themes? Then Princess Tutu is the fairy tale subverting fairy tale within a fairy tale for you!
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) Masterpiece I can't fit all the good I have to say about this show in this box.
R.O.D -The TV- Good
Read or Die (OAV) Very good
REC (TV) Good So cute...
Record of Lodoss War (OAV) So-so
Redline (movie) Masterpiece
Renkin 3-kyū Magical? Pokān (TV) Good This show is even crazier than you'd think from reading a synopsis.
Rozen Maiden (TV) Very good
Rozen Maiden: Ouvertüre (special) Very good
Rozen Maiden: Träumend (TV) Very good
Rumbling Hearts (TV) Good I've seen a good bit of eroge based anime. But you know, they all kinda seemed the same. Until I saw Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. Not only does KGNE take a somewhat unique approach in that it is not in a highschool setting (well, it starts in one, but the main story is set later), but it also has the most realistic feel of any romantic drama anmie I've seen. Sure, there are exaggerations, but the way the characters are portrayed dealing with very real struggles (with things both in and out of their control) is refreshingly believable overall. KGNE has, in its own way, a happy ending, but is ultimately a kind of sad story about the crushing of dreams, coping with reality, and the dangers of staying trapped in the past. Highly recommended for drama and/or romance fans. Yes, this is basically a soap opera, but it's probably one of the best ones you'll find in anime.
Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection (OAV) Good Eh, I just like to pretend this isn't Kenshin in this movie... because I just don't like it as a piece of the Kenshin story. However, as a film I really like it; the animation and music are very well done and the story (if you can detatch it from the rest of Kenshin) was good, albiet sad :|
Rurouni Kenshin: The Motion Picture Weak Uh, is this like some episodes of the TV show they forgot to air or something lolz... I guess for the serious Kenshin nut this'll be something fun but I found it pretty boring.
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal (OAV) Masterpiece Anime simply doesn't get any better than this.
S-CRY-ed (TV) Weak
Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei (TV) Very good
School Rumble (TV) Good Funny, but it goes nowhere.
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) Good Saw this back when TechTV was showing anime. Found it interesting because it was so weird. Watched it a couple more times to try and make sense of it and decided that Lain is just too pretentious and weird for the sake of weird to really be a good show. It does have its moments, but its outlook is just too depressing for me to enjoy.
Shakugan no Shana (TV) Weak Horrible main characters... I'm not sure how I managed to finish the show... Margery Daw was the only good one :\
Shakugan no Shana (movie) Weak
She and Her Cat (OAV) Good
Shiki (TV) Very good
Shuffle! (TV) Bad I found myself fast forwarding in this show, actually. It was that uninteresting. Also, Nia's voice was like fingernails on chalkboards in stereo. (p-_-)p
Silent Möbius (TV) Good Also saw this one on TechTV back when. Thought it was alright. Didn't like the noses. Rewatched it a few years later since I couldn't remember much except for some of the depressing ending. Not as good as I remembered. Still don't like the noses.
Silent Möbius: The Motion Picture Decent
Sketchbook ~full color'S~ (TV) Very good If I had to sum up Sketchbook ~ full color'S in one word, it would be "relaxing." It's a show about normal things seen through the eyes of these students, and their rainbow-colored outlooks provide a lot of smiles. Also, Kate is awesome.
(The) Sky Crawlers (movie) Very good
Soul Eater (TV) Very good Soul Eater is awesome. Or rather, it's an awesome presentation of a bunch of worn out shounen elements. A fun mix of character development (both for the good guys and the villains), action, and humor with a pretty solid, though very predictable, plot and some seriously awesome art. I don't really proactively seek out shounen type shows so I guess Soul Eater slipped under my radar, but I'm glad I checked it out because it's really good. Shounen fans, don't miss this one! And for those of you who aren't shounen fans, or aren't sure if you are, you should still watch Soul Eater!
Sound of the Sky (TV) Very good A very pretty show; a treat for the eyes and ears, with world building and backstory that is very interesting. Reminiscent of a nice smoothie made from K-ON's cast, Haibane Renmei's world, and Aria's pacing with a dash of military--this is not a war series as much as it is a slice of life series that uses a very odd military setting. Nothing memorable in terms of story or character development, though episode 7 will forever stand out as one of the show's most effective episodes in my mind--SnW did manage to surprise me a few times, which was fun. Though, for a show that takes itself as seriously as SnW mostly does, it still has plenty of wtf moments, and one will probably need to shore up their suspension of disbelief and roll with some things (both explained and unexplained) in order to enjoy the show. Sora no Woto's cast is probably its weakest point, and I found myself soon caring much more about the world/setting/history than I did about the cast. Sadly, some of the more interesting tidbits were not fully explored, but they at least gave me plenty to speculate about, which was fun. The ending is a bunch of bull, in more ways than one, even though it doesn't feel like it came out of nowhere, so I'm not docking points for that.
Space Pirate Captain Harlock (TV) Not really good I really tried to like this one but... I dunno, I couldn't get into it. I probably would have really liked this as a kid.
Spice and Wolf (TV) Very good Yes, it's a bit slow. Yes, it's about economics. But the interaction of the main characters kept my attention from start to finish.
Spice and Wolf II (TV) Excellent
Spiral (TV) Not really good Watched this one because it was advertised as a mystery type story. Meh. It wasn't terrible; I did finish it. But it's very forgetable. Plenty of better (and worse) things to spend your time on.
Spirited Away (movie) Excellent
Squid Girl (TV) Very good
Squid Girl Season 2 (TV) Good
Steamboy (movie) Decent
Strawberry Marshmallow (TV) Very good Cute, not pedo. This show is so funny, in its own kinda slow-paced wtfMiu? way. :D No, seriously. Don't avoid this just because the girls are so young. Miu is a bundle of energy that will knock down the walls of your prejudice and gladly take you back to the whacky hijinx of childhood.
Strawberry Marshmallow (OAV) Good
Strike Witches (TV) Weak This show was total crap. I only managed to finish it because Lucchini is so darn cute. That's actually the same reason I watched it in the first place.
Summer Wars (movie) Excellent
Tales of the Abyss (TV) Good Very faithful adaptation of the game's story. Great for fans of the game who want to revisit the story without having to sit down to play the game through or for anyone who missed out on the game and wants to know what the TotA buzz was all about. The cast really carries this show with their interaction.
Tales of Vesperia: The First Strike (movie) Good
(The) Tatami Galaxy (TV) Excellent
Texhnolyze (TV) Very good
This Ugly Yet Beautiful World (TV) Bad
Time of Eve (ONA) Excellent
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (TV) Decent
Toradora! (TV) Very good I can't really say this show is great because it makes little to no attempts to be much more than another predictable highschool romance with a violent tsundere lead. However, among its fellow highschool romance shows, Toradora is actually pretty good for what it is. The humor rarely relied too heavily on silly miscommunications. Several of the cast, like Minori and Ami, had interesting layers to their character. And ToraDora has its heartfelt moments; when conversations about ghosts are used as an allusion to love, I gotta give some props.
Tweeny Witches (TV) Very good Don't let the eye-roller of a title keep you from watching this (like it did for me)! This show is like what you'd get if you mixed Tim Burton and Miyazaki and Lewis Carol with Dennou Coil and Harry Potter and a dash of Gianax. It's magical girl unlike anything you'd expect (well, mostly). More review: http://veers1138.livejournal.com/84959.html
Tweeny Witches: The Adventures (OAV) Decent
(The) Twelve Kingdoms (TV) Excellent One of my all-time favorites. Youko's character development is supurb, the historical fantasy setting is interesting and well fleshed-out, and there's plenty of action and plot to tie all the characters together. It's long, but don't let that stop you from checking this one out--anyone who doesn't outright hate historical fantasy really should see The Twelve Kingdoms.
Umineko - When They Cry (TV) Good Was really starting to get tired of this series until episode 11+ rolled around and then this show's blender mix of Phoenix Write, FLCL, and Higurashi jumped the shark with gusto and as all manner of insanity breaks out, entertainment value shot way up.
Utawarerumono (TV) Not really good This show was doing sooo well until the end. Total crap ending ruined it :| One of the best examples of a decent show totally sabotagued by a crappy ending that I can think of.
Venus Wars (movie) Decent
Vexille - 2077 Isolation of Japan (movie) Decent
(The) Vision of Escaflowne (TV) Good
Voices of a Distant Star (OAV) Very good
Wagnaria!! (TV) Decent
Welcome to the NHK (TV) Weak
When They Cry - Higurashi (TV) Very good
When They Cry - Kai (TV) Very good
Whisper of the Heart (movie) Excellent Still one of my favorite Miyazaki movies.
Wolf's Rain (TV) Decent This show was doing pretty good up until the ending. Has a great soundtrack but I can't say I'd ever want to watch it again.
Wolf's Rain (OAV) Not really good
X (TV) Bad I tried to like this show, really, but I couldn't. I managed to finish it (thanks mostly to Sora and Arashi I think) but ugh what a dismal plot and boring/annoying/depressing cast.
Xam'd: Lost Memories (ONA) Good It's a Bebop, it's a Mononoke, it's a Nausicaa, it's--! It's a Xam'd... and it's pretty awesome, for a while, at least. Kinda comes off the rails at the end.
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (OAV) Excellent
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou: Quiet Country Cafe (OAV) Excellent
Zan Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei (TV) Very good A bit more hit-and-miss than the first couple seasons, I think due to restrictive forumla, but this show is still awesome. 10/10 for trolling its own target audience even harder than before. If you like sarcastic, ironic, referential, social-commenting, dark humor, look no further than SZS.
Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei (TV) Very good Crazy. Just crazy. Look no further than this for your zany, cruel, sarcastic parodying social commentary needs. The sheer variety of art and animation styles is also pretty impressive. Just be sure you have your finger on the pause button because this show, and its prequal, move at breakneck paces.
