Washu0's Anime

Will not finish Rating Comment
Akiba Maid War (TV) So-so (2022 Q4 Fall) Some entertaining violence, but conceit doesn't succeed and main character's win via optimism unconvincing.
Basilisk (TV) Not really good (2006) Watched first disk at Otakon; wasn't compelled to watch more.
BASTARD!! -Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy- (ONA) Bad (2022 Q3 Summer) Watched first episode. Wants to be over the top awesome like Demon King Academy, but lacks both charisma and chutzpah to be entertaining. Wide open plot holes and sad power-fantasy.
Bleach (TV) So-so (2006) First season was great: interesting world setup and characters. Then the most interesting character, Rukia, got locked in a tower for the entire second season, and the rescue mission dragged on, and I got bored.
Blue Dragon (TV) Weak (2008) Boring adolescent power fantasy.
Bocchi the Rock! (TV) Not really good (2022 Q4 Fall) Japan really, really needs therapists. Main character's crippling mental illness played for laughs (like in WATAMOTE). More painful than engaging.
Case Closed (TV) So-so (2004) Watched a few episodes in the early 2000s. De-ageing stick got old fast. Individual episodes not bad, but the ultimate "goal" of Conan no longer being a kid was obviously--even then with "only" hundreds of episodes as opposed the the 1,000+ currently available in 2022--never going to reach closure, so didn't get engaged.
Dead Mount Death Play (TV) So-so (2023 Q2 Spring) Strong first episode with nice twist, but then didn't seem to be going anywhere.
(The) Demon Girl Next Door (TV 2) So-so (2022 Q2 Spring)
(The) Devil Is a Part-Timer!! (TV 2) Weak (2022 Q3 Summer)
Don't Hurt Me, My Healer! (TV) Bad (2022 Q2 Spring) Meh. Karla is Pure Evil without the purpose or charisma.
Drug Store in Another World - The Slow Life of a Cheat Pharmacist (TV) Bad (2021 Q3 Summer) Not continuing when the first episode is that cliche and boring.
(The) Executioner and Her Way of Life (TV) Awful (2022 Q2 Spring) First half of first episode was nicely isekai trope subverting, then Momo the sexual assault lesbian appeared and the initial momentum just died. It never really picked back up, but I watched until episode 7(?) when they recycled the same footage 3 times in the same episode (and another piece of footage twice), and tried to distract from this laziness by having one of the girls wagging her butt in the center of the camera multiple times. Such a waste of a great premise.
Fairy Tail (TV) So-so (2011) Slayers meets One Piece. Kind of stock characters and story, but well executed in the beginning. But then it just goes on and on and on and ugh.
(The) Fire Hunter (TV) Bad (2023 Q1 Winter) I'm not that big a stickler for animation quality if the world-building, story, and characters are compelling, but the animation budget here looks like they had about $2.50 at most. The other three criteria didn't even begin to make up for the animation shortfall, so I stopped watching after two episodes.
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Bad (2005) Tried multiple times to get into this show in the half decade after it came out, since it was so hyped. Edward was a gratingly annoying character (perhaps the English dub didn't help) and nothing shown made enough sense to be engaging. Just couldn't make myself keep watching. See FMA: Brotherhood entry for rest of review.
.hack//SIGN (TV) Bad (2003) So boring.
I'm Quitting Heroing (TV) Bad (2022 Q2 Spring) Main character made to look smart and competent by making everyone else stupid. Succubus general needed to write up and enforce some sexual harassment policies. Annoying.
I've Somehow Gotten Stronger When I Improved My Farm-Related Skills (TV) Weak (2022 Q4 Fall) One note joke gets quickly stale; occasional over the top ridiculousness does not compensate.
Infinite Dendrogram (TV) Awful (2020 Q1 Winter) Isekai done badly is so awful. The main character is completely generic and uninteresting and gets plot-armored with overpowered abilities that he in no way earned. The world building is illogical and inconsistent and the implications of sentient NPC AIs are terrible. Avoid.
Kaguya-sama: Love is War -Ultra Romantic- (TV) So-so (2022 Q2 Spring) Faked-up, drawn out drama to prevent characters from getting together is not my cup of tea. If 10 minutes of honest communication will resolve the situation, then there isn't actually a story worth telling.
Komi Can't Communicate (TV 2) Not really good (2022 Q2 Spring) Like WATAMOTE and Bocchi the Rock, main character's crippling mental illness (social anxiety) is played for laughs. Again more painful than engaging.
KonoSuba – God’s blessing on this wonderful world!! (TV) Bad (2020 Q2 Spring) One note stupid comedy about annoying idiots.
Lupin the 3rd (TV) Decent (2005) Year is a guess, I think I saw some of this on Adult Swim or Toonami. Fun, but episodic. Not worth the time investment to watch this many episodes.
Management of a Novice Alchemist (TV) Bad (2022 Q4 Fall) Overpowered main character? Check. Cardboard cutout characters? Check. Boring plot? Check. Uninspired world building? Check.
Metallic Rouge (TV) Bad (2024 Q1) Early episodes had potential to build an interesting world and situation; however, I was getting skeptical by episode 5 that anything would come together. In reading the review for episode 9, I find "Metallic Rouge has no unifying thematic or narrative direction apart from the philosophy of 'fuck it, we ball.'" and "The plot moves, but it moves too fast to find footing. The characters are all here, but they're flattened. The themes and social commentary are apparent but neutered, simplified, and frequently contradictory. Its mosaic of influences is vast, but it stops short of synthesizing them in a novel and compelling way." So yeah, it went JJ Abrams as I suspected, and I'm glad I gave up around episode 6.
Naruto (TV) Not really good (2005) First season wan't bad, then a tournament arc started, then endless filler started, and I quit.
Noblesse (TV) Awful (2020 Q4 Fall) Didn't go in with high expectations from the OVA, but was mildly interested. That was wrong. Plot development was sadly obvious, characters were shallow, and the only thing that retained some potentially intriguing mystery was the Rai-Frankenstein backstory. Then the episodes about said backstory played, and I quit watching.
One Piece (TV 1999) So-so (2005) Watched the bowdlerized (rather obviously and hilariously so) dub on Toonami and it wasn't bad, but not good enough to make me want to invest the time for 1000+ episodes.
Otaku Elf (TV) So-so (2023 Q2 Spring) Simple pattern of not-plot, okay characters, interesting historical/cultural tidbits. Not enough to make me watch beyond an episode or two.
Our Dating Story: The Experienced You and The Inexperienced Me (TV) Weak (2023 Q4) Potentially interesting premise, but didn't seem to be going anywhere.
(The) Promised Neverland (TV) Decent (2019 Q4 Fall) Watched only the first episode and really liked where everything stood, so I didn't feel like watching more as I felt the rest of season 1 could only go downhill. That attitude was apparently justified as the second season was generally hated.
Psycho-Pass 2 (TV) Awful (2020 June) Entered with high expectation from the first. So very disappointed. It got JJ Abrams-ed. (To sufficiently understand my loathing for Abrams, he ruined Star Trek and finished ruining Star Wars for me.) The world stopped making sense, the new main character is as vile as Trump, and the plot degenerated into a morass of increasingly ridiculous sub-plots getting thrown in to distract from the weaknesses of the previous subplot. Best to avoid altogether to avoid ruining the first.
Revenger (TV) Weak (2023 Q1 Winter) Interesting opening; liked that no year/place was openly stated--you had to put it together from context. Watched a few episodes, and tonally it seemed to want to be taken as a serious show, but the assassin group's methods of killing were so ludicrously unrealistic that they broke my engagement and suspension of disbelief.
Rosario + Vampire Capu2 (TV) Awful (2008) Sarcastic voice-over bat became an in-world character, and the only good point of the show was lost.
Sabikui Bisco (TV) Weak (2022 Q4 Winter) If you have to try that hard to be cool, you automatically fail. How do those mushrooms get the mass necessary to grow that quickly?
Sgt. Frog (TV) Weak (2012) Spousal unit watched. Not my cup of tea.
Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie (TV) Not really good (2022 Q2 Spring) Usually I can remember why I dislike something; here it just wasn't memorable.
Teasing Master Takagi-san (TV 3) Not really good (2022 Q1 Winter) Faked-up, drawn out drama to prevent characters from getting together is not my cup of tea. If 10 minutes of honest communication will resolve the situation, then there isn't actually a story worth telling.
'Tis Time for "Torture," Princess (TV) Weak (2024 Q1) Somewhat amusing, but one note. Got bored after 3 episodes.
Tokyo Ghoul (TV) Awful (2018) Pretentious and incoherent.
Tower of God (TV) Weak (2020 Spring)
Trigun Stampede (TV) Weak (2023 Q1) CGI quality wasn't bad, but the way they choose to use it was. Replacing Millie with cynical old dude (embodying going to die mentor trope) was also a bad choice. Then the "Does anyone have a bullet?!?" shtick finished driving me away.
Undead Unluck (TV) Weak (2023 Q4) Disjointed intro; unpleasant harassment; shonen jump, which means no end in sight. Pass.
UniteUp! (TV) Weak (2023 Q1 Winter) Idol show had a somewhat different opening premise so gave it a try. Didn't hold attention past the 3rd episode.
Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun (TV 3) Weak (2022 Q4 Fall) Central premise of "human in demon world is in so very much danger!!" doesn't hold up.
Witchblade (TV) Bad (2006) I like the live action TV show, so gave this a try at Otakon. Unfortunately, the anime got ridiculously hypersexualized and main character's motivation got focused on "protecting a child is the only reason a woman can be violent." Felt sorry for the voice actress who had to fake an orgasm every few minutes.
Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files (TV) Decent (2002) First season was pretty good, but then second became a tournament arc and was too boring to continue.
