| Grave of the Fireflies (movie) | So-so | 44 A rare misfire for Ghibli. Amazing how the studio can skip from the intrepid Castle in the Sky where the characters' actions decided their outcomes to something as lumbering and operatic as Grave of the Fireflies, merely a post-war lament that watches as its two passive protagonists suffer helplessly at the hands of forces entirely beyond their control. Sweeping pathos with little understanding and few ideas, endlessly tragic circumstances resulting from irrevocable sources rather than characters' decisions, single-minded reliance on the magnitude of the disaster to achieve emotional heft - this film literally hits every tenet of melodrama all by its lonesome. On a positive note, Grave of the Fireflies is about fifty times better than the eerily similar Barefoot Gen. |

| Like the Clouds, Like the Wind (movie) | Good | 64 Lots of interesting observations, the most controversial of which is likely the empire founded on wisdom courtesy the bumbling, pedantic scholar who needed fifty years to figure out the difference between men and women is the capacity to bear children. Also captivating when it examines how political strife and modernism cause social classes to blur. I'd list more but I'm too baffled by the curt ending that somehow fails to provide a resolution for any of the film's ideas in favor of a historical and-that's-that. Still probably the best TV movie around next to Ocean Waves / I Can Hear the Sea though. |

| Ocean Waves (movie) | Very good | 78 Maybe a tad mundane for Ghibli, but what incredible nuance for the first project of an up-and-coming crop of animators, even considering they were taught by the best of the best. Won't spoil the whole movie here but keep an eye out for two staggering scenes. First, when our heroes go for a night-time stroll to unwind after the hysterical reunion dinner, the mood is just perfect, one of fond chagrin for how serious their conflicts and relationships seemed back then, and the concluding shot mirrors this attitude with a slow pullback from the lit-up building - the ardor and intensity of high school fade as these guys and gals finally graduate emotionally. Seems melancholy, but the second astonishing scene that occurs on the subway with Taku and Rikako qualifies the notion; in a film of largely static shots ... whooooaaaaaaaa! The camera pivots into a whip-pan of appropriate grandeur; the perfect way to acknowledge maturity doesn't oblige the loss of passion or majesty. If this film is any indication, post-Miyazaki/Takahata Ghibli is in good hands. |
