| 5 Centimeters Per Second (movie) | Very good | Well, I am a huge Shinkai fangirl, and this latest from him I couldn't help but compare to his earlier works. The artistry was phenominal, truely backgrounds and details and rich vibrant colors are what he does best and this doesn't disappoint in that respect.
I was a bit disappointed in both the Seiyuu and Voice Actors chosen to do this, for some reason, neither seemed to perfectly capture the characters, although it wasn't hideous sounding either. Speaking of sounds, I was expecting much more from the score used, perhaps because I so love the BGM used in The Place Promised in Our Early Days (Shinkai's earlier work) that I was hoping for more here than was delivered. It sounded fine, but nothing stood out to me as particularly moving, and while the last song does seem to perfectly convey the feelings of the show, it does seem a little harsh as its a bit loud, but nothing sounds glaringly wrong either.
The story itself was fine, I was able to connect with nearly every characters feelings well, but I personally would have liked more of one characters feeling though all three shorts. It was disappointing to not hear more of Takaki's feeling in the second short, although I admit, this short moved me the most.
Over-all, while this will not replace Place Promised as my favorite, it was a very solid show, which I can easily see myself re-watching many times and growing more fond of with each viewing. |

I thought "oohhh, looks pretty" and indeed, it does have many elements I like in anime...pretty animation, winged boys, bishis and some BL, yet throwing a bunch of favorite foods together and calling it dinner will make you sick when you are eating hot fudge covered chicken and rice. Apparently based of a BL game, which may or may not suck, I don't know, the premise is muddled at best here in the anime. Brothers from another world who are royalty and have wings unbeknownst to them, separated as children and reunited at school years later...with enemies out to get them...who knows, I could make stuff up and you would never know, my plot description there is more coherent than what I saw. If you simply don't care one wit about any sort of plot, it's watchable for the character designs and pretty art, but...that's it folks. Nothing I can recomend here. |
| Angelic Layer (TV) | Excellent | Anytime an anime can suck you in to caring about the characters, that's a good thing, and this anime excels in that. There are many good things here, it's complex yet subtle relationships, character design and plot. It's hard to not instantly love the Angelic Layer game and it's "angels" or dolls, whom a user can create themselves for a wonderful diversity of designs or styles, all showing some of Clamps best designs (there is a very high cuteness factor at work here.) The plot is a wonderfully well thought out with the ending being one of the more satisfying in how it wraps everything together. It's hard to not draw comparisons to Clamps best work, in my opinion, CardCaptor Sakura. Humor, drama, human emotion and a plucky heroine all make this an anime you should definately check out. |

| Appleseed: Ex Machina (movie) | Very good | I didn't expect to like this so much actually, the first Appleseed (Both other previous Appleseed actually) were underwealming and didn't leave me expecting much here, but I was pleasantly surprised. The art is excellent but more than that, the story is solid. Yeah, it is still heavily action oriented, and those scenes are fun to see, but beyond that, the background and character interactions are enough to flesh everyone out, give them some interest and make this a more solid story than it could have otherwise been. This gets slightly higher marks from me due to the pretty art, be it CGI or hand drawn, pretty art always interests me. Not boring and the one Appleseed I would recomend if you only wanted to see one...which you only want to see one, trust me. |

She has been entrusted with seeds, containing the DNA for life and re-growth on the earth. Of course, not everyone wants this to happen, or this would be a very boring movie, so in comes the baddie to try and take her and her companions out before they can save the planet from permenant desolation. The story is a bit muddled for no clear reason, the girl/war part makes sense, but the brain/god thingers trying to stop her don't and they aren't explained well enough to take very seriously in this story. Seriously, they look like a big brain in a bubble (are they talking aloud, or communicating telepathically? It isn't clear, but to differentiate which blobby brain talks, they glow a bit so you can tell...so silly.) I can't say I really liked this, or recomend it to others. |

The battles never feel like it's the monster of the week, and if I could ever live in an anime family, I would want to live in Sakura's, as I think Sakura is about the absolutely cutest anime girl EVER. |

The characters are one dimensional and don't grow or vary through the series and the plot is...weak. It could have been interesting if done differently and in a much shorter time frame. The animation is terrible and uses way too many stills, pan and scans, and lazy animation. The dialog is cheezy and nothing stays dramatically serious, yet nothing is actually funny either, despite the characters all "bravely foraging on ahead laughing and staying close to each other" which sounds heart-warming, but isn't. The English dub just makes it more unbearable as I think the same VA (or an admirer) was used that does Mr. Crabbs in Sponge Bob to add that piratey character. I say, go watch Gankutsuou, and if you have already seen it, go watch something else and skip this. |

The show itself suffers almost from so many maids and the weak male lead who looks about 11 is insufferable to watch with all the adult looking maids throwing themselves on him. The story was predictable, it wasn't really great anything, yet I was glad to see it since I had previous fond memories of this plot. I think I am over that now. |

Done in all flashback form and narrarated by a main character from the present, the story can focus on drawing you into their lives so that you care about the characters and what they feel and go through. Tastefully and wonderfully done, and the animation is fairly good for being mid 80's when it came out, althought it wouldn't compare well to todays standards, there is nothing that would keep you from enjoying it. |

The balance of what is going on, and what you know so far in the story, and what will happen next is a fun guessing game up until the end, and you can't help but hope that Key doesn't end in tragedy, that she finds her friends and becomes human. Caring for robot Key isn't hard to do, despite her stiffness, it's easy when looking to her friends examples. Her friends that help her are all well fleshed out and very human in their emotions and it's easy to care about all involved with Key. The animation itself is unremarkable, yet fits the tone of the show well, as does it's music which seems to perfectly compliment the story. |

| Mushi-Shi (TV) | Masterpiece | There are so very many good elements in this anime, yet it may not actually have something for everyone. Episodic, quiet, serene, stunning, immaginative, beautiful, relaxing, endearing, the praise could go on and on. The animation is very pretty, crisp and clear, stunning colours are used in a warm and wonderful way, yet there isn't always something going on. There are times the scenery is still, the camera doesn't move, pans and scans are common, yet it never feels lazy here, instead it adds to the panoramic views, and the quiet gentle feel of this charming show. Each episode takes us into a new story, all wonderfully imagintive and varied where we get to meet new creatures, the Mushi, who are sometimes helpful, sometimes harmful, and sometimes simply just there, changing daily life for inhabitants. Ginko is the Mushi master, who deals with them, looking for solutions for people and Mushi to co-exist in harmony when possible.
The music is all designed to keep you in the perfect frame of mind and compliments the show perfectly, and frankly, this show has some of the best and most wonderful art designs for the box, cover, disks and extras, and it is well worth investing in this series. It would be an easy re-watch for one episode at a time or a marathon, whichever you have time for when in the mood for something to soothe you.
My one complaint about this show is that many of the characters are completely indistinguishable from each other. At first, I had trouble telling if the next episode was the same person as the last episode or a new character, but once I got over that, it was certainly no hinderance to watching and enjoying this show to it's fullest. |

The music is snappy, the lyrics (and dialog) are fun, the plot is enough to carry the story, and the variety of characters add points of interest. There are only about 8-10 different music scores used with different lyrics used so if this series were longer it would sound too repetitive, however, since the songs are fun, it's easy to overlook. The sub and dub are very different, but it certainly detracts nothing whichever way you listen to it, and I would recommend either. The disks are full of extras from commentaries, to sing along lyrics, to pop-up notes, that it's packed with many ways to view. I loved this, and it moved into my top 10, although I admit, it isn't for everyone...or perhaps even most. |

It started very good, very funny, and the wonderful plot device of changing sexes while not original, was certainly funny. The first few seasons drew me in, and I was enjoying all the exploits of all the characters, of which there are many, all with their own charms. Then, something bad happened...it fell into mediocrity, and sometimes not even rising to that. It started to find a bit of it charm again in season 5 I think it was, but it was not enough to make it really funny again. In the end, I felt cheated...seven long seasons, some specials and no conclusion. It felt like the whole show was simply filler...when it was good, it was good, but when it wasn't... watch the first two seasons and stop, and you'll have seen the very best this show would have to offer... that gets a much better over-all grade, all the way to excellent. |

In what is the most disappointing continuation, the animation suffered (it looks like I could have done better) all the characters look different, the voice actors all changed, so I had to start watching subbed, which I woudn't have minded as much had I not started this dubbed. The beautiful music you loved in the first series is all gone and replaced with forgettable stuff that doesn't enhance the show... I woudn't recomend this to most fans, however I stick around to see where it goes...I am expecting to be disappointed...and once again, the series doesn't end... |

A wonderful sub or dub with beautiful BGM perfectly hightening moods. Something I can watch over and over and over again without growing tired of it. |

| Super GALS (TV) | Masterpiece | This title is in my top ten as it feels easy breezy to watch whenever, and especially when I want to smile and forget about life for awhile, this title makes me smile. The contests between Ran and Mami, the "don't die Detective Kotobuki!" and Yuya "second place" all never fail to make me laugh. There isn't a huge plot you have to force yourself to concentrate on, all the characters are very likable, the animation is lovely, and the dub rocks. I was sorry the second season didn't get the dub treatment as well, however it doesn't hamper my enjoyment of the show one bit. A good show when you need a lift. |

It was wonderful to watch, I loved the details in the art, it was well written and acted (I watched subbed, I didn't like the dub, which had some VA changes in the last disk to my understanding as well, so I would recomend this subbed) and I would recomend anyone to see it. It was gripping, very easy to get sucked into the lives of the characters and really care about what is going on, so in that respect, it was a winner. The end however...when I finished the last disk, I fully expected there to be more, and alas...there wasn't. There should have been. There was more story to tell, and it's sad it never got told. This is one I will really hope more gets done with somme day, and if that ever happens, this may get moved up in rating. |
