Akira (movie) Excellent
(The) Animatrix (OAV) Very good
Appleseed (movie) Decent
Arjuna (TV) Very good
Blade of the Phantom Master (movie) Very good
Blood: The Last Vampire (movie) Good
Boogiepop Phantom (TV) Very good This show was quite interesting, however some episodes were not "on the level". Meaning some were rather boring. Also, all episodes are quite long to get into, but the ending is always good. Over 12 episodes, I really enjoyed most, probably 9 out of 12.
Elfen Lied (TV) Excellent This is a show I picked because I had read it would shock me, and I did not believe it. So I watched it, and I have to admit : I was wrong! This show is really sick, but not in a bad way. This is not for the faint of heart nor the easily offended, as there is lot of violence and nudity (none of the nudity is erotic, unless you are really perverted and like to see naked girls drenched in blood). The characters are interesting and quite charming. Some complained about Mayu's past, that it was unnecessary, but I answer that this is good in such a show to remind us that humans do as much horrible things as monsters. All in all, I really enjoyed the series, altough some scenes are very hard.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (movie) Excellent
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (US CG movie) Bad
First Squad - The Moment Of Truth (OAV) Awful
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV) Masterpiece Gankutsuou is a very interesting adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel. Set in an anachronistic future instead of old France, this relates the story of vengeance of the Count. However, it distinguishes itself from most anime by its singular animation, which is at times truly amazing and at others only so-so, yet the character designs are well-done. The emotions are very well conveyed by the animation, especially the count, when he realizes (minor spoiler) that by getting his revenge he will hurt Albert, the look in his face is really sad... then he gets his resolve again and appears to be truly evil. Awesome scene. The supernatural elements in the anime is only an exaggeration of what was already in the novel, as the Count passes for a vampire. The story holds itself very well so far, and some of the most memorable moments from the novel are really well rendered, and most changes are eventually justified. Don’t go looking for a perfect adaptation here, as there are quite a lot of changes, but in its own way, stays very true to the original. Music is top-notch also, so it is worth nothing.
Ghost in the Shell (movie) Masterpiece
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie) Excellent
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) Excellent
Ghost Talker's Daydream (OAV) Good A bit disappointed by this show, altough it is quite good. Humor is only so-so ("bushy!"), and some aspects of the characters are not at all explained (such as her "ghost-whip"). But the actual ghost aspect of the show was done very well, in a more credible manner than the main characters...
.hack//Liminality (OAV) Decent
Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid (movie)
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) Very good
(The) Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (TV) Masterpiece
My-HiME (TV) Very good My-HiME was a series I enjoyed quite a lot. At first, I was turned off by the girly covers, but it ended up a really nice anime. I appreciated how they mixed up genres a lot, and make it work, which is something not that easy, especially as it mixes action, sci-fi, drama, humor and romance. The character design was great, and even with the tons of characters, mostly females, they were all easily recognizable and most had interesting personalities. My fave would probably be Mikoto, the tiny girl with the huge Cloud-like sword and an almost cat or dog-like personality was really funny. In some episode, the balance between the genres shifted, but except for a few romance-oriented episodes (not my kind, but being a Buffy fan, I don't mind) most were really enjoyable.
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Good
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (movie) So-so
Ninja Scroll (movie) Very good
(Le) Portrait de Petite Cossette (OAV) Good That one was weird. Really weird. The images are quite good, and kudos to the artistic team. The character design was quite okay. I hoped it would be spookier, though, since it is really simply a ghost story staying on the intriguing and mildly scaring levels.
Princess Mononoke (movie) Excellent
Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight (TV) Decent
Serial Experiments Lain (TV) Very good
(The) Slayers (TV) Very good
Slayers - The Motion Picture Decent
(The) Slayers Next (TV) Excellent
(The) Slayers Try (TV) Good
Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II: The Movie (OAV) Decent
Texhnolyze (TV) Masterpiece
Trinity Blood (TV) Excellent TB is an uneven series. While some of it soars high, some episodes suffer from a lacking dialogue and weird directing. However, for the most part, it has interesting characters, and kudos to the writers, because they made me care about Esther, a character I found utterly annoying at the beginning. Don't expect deep plots (it's well conceived, but nothing very deep of philosophical), character development (it's there, but not that much), but do expect lots of atmosphere, gorgeous animation, really fun action scenes and an unconventional story structure, working from arc to arc of 2 to 5 episodes. It's no "enemy of the week" style, and as Abel seem to be the invincible character àla Alucard of Vampire Hunter D, you realize his power does not make him able to always succeed, which was nice. I'll give that to the writers, they put him in situations where going all Crusnik was not always an option. It does suffer from a lack of background, however, and for a vampire series, it might not be bloody enough for some. Still, the character design is great, and the cast is varied. A shame some characters are not seen enough, cause most are at least interesting.
(The) Twelve Kingdoms (TV) Masterpiece This is my personnal number one. Great characters, great stories (more than one sttory arc in the whole series), great animation (most of the time), excellent character design. I see it as the more mature "schoolgirl travels to fantasy world". The land of the 12 kingdoms is believable, and you have anything you can want in a series.
X (movie) So-so
