Eps 1,2 & 3 The technique used to animate this gives it a fake and cheap feel. It really looks like shit. Simply cringeworthy for the most part. After several episodes I'm still finding that Kazuka-kun is a total dumbass wimp of a character and what's her face with the glasses, to be an incredible idiot to boot. Yet I'll continue to watch? May 17th Having an intentionally vague appearance to the characters facial expressions serves to add to the level of absurdity on display here. In these young characters we glimpse a tortured soul that is Nakamura, she's intelligent, yet shunned by her classmates. She's also honest to a fault and simply can't bring herself to accept the bullshit she sees in her teacher and others around her. In her anger and immaturity we see that she is perfectly fine with calling out Kasuga on his contradictions. In Kasuga we have a young idealist that is victim to his limited view of life which is primarily a result of his use of book reading as a retreat and his constant dwelling on other things just as intangible. The third main character Saeki, rather personifies youth, innocence and normality. And in this story, is something that looks like it won't last. I think she'll have it tattered, shattered and scattered by the time its all said and done. Her days of young love are gonna unfold faster than Nakamura can dress Kasuga in her gym clothes. The OP and ED are great. My gawd that excuse for singing is spot on. If I ever buy a hug pillow it'll be for Sawa Nakamura. Her animated character puts the manga version to shame. Definitely buying this one and completing the manga as well. May 20th Ep 4, 5, 6 & 7 Ep 7. Wow. That was beautiful. In the privacy of Saek's own bedroom, sitting right next to her, Kasuga had the perfect chance to come clean and redeem himself. But what the fuck does he do? What's his response when he's presented the golden get out jail card for free? He chooses chickenshit door #1 and continues to avoid accepting responsibility for his actions. So when confronted by the utterly disgusted by liars and fakers of the world that is Nakamura he begins to cave in. Nakamura being Nakamura knows she has his number and relishes in his inability to deal with it head on. His unwillingness to muster even the tiniest bit of courage has him finally going the opposite way. No longer wanting to hide things he has allowed Nakamura to manipulate his own self imposed guilt. He's finally relieved himself of the pressure that lying to himself has caused but how will he deal with the consequences of his latest actions? He's vandalized the school, he's insulted his classmates, and Saeki will have her trust in him severely tested or utterly crushed by this revelation. To say nothing of her parents and his. Oh the comedy here. It's dark and it's beautiful. This pain of others. And apparently it all stems from Flowers of Evil. I like how this show has taken an all too common theme and setting for anime - the high school and just shit all over it with characters that resemble actual human beings with weaknesses, character flaws and other things that will hit closer to home for those it was intended for - Japanese teens. Finally we get to see something beyond different colored hair, big boobs and other things that are so par for the course.
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (TV) Good
Water world and the boring rehash of Nausicaa and her little side-kick aside, this has been a pretty one to ogle at. It'll be interesting enough for me to stick around if they can develop dude with the talking robot, instant pirate vaporizer, into something more than a fish outta water type character. We'll see.
