maggotthemango's Anime

Seen all Rating Comment
Akira (movie) Decent beautiful animation for it's time, well-executed post-apocalyptic imagery, a landmark of the genre. unfortunately, they tried to cram 6 volumes of manga into a 90 minute film, reducing the story to a nonsensical vehicle for said post-apocalyptic imagery.
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (OAV) Weak i watched this because i like cat girls. there's no other merit to this show.
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku DASH! (OAV) Weak i liked cat girls enough to watch the next nuku nuku series, which was slightly longer than the first. i finished it because i'm a completist, but did not have the stomach to watch the tv series. skip it unless you'll watch anything with cute girls fighting.
Armitage III: Poly-Matrix (movie) Good fairly good film dealing with the same themes as bladerunner, but doesn't hold the same weight.
Armitage: Dual-Matrix (movie) So-so an unnecessary sequel. looks good, but, that's it.
Azumanga Daioh (TV) Excellent i can see why some have referred to this as the "seinfeld" of anime. without any real story, the humor is created through mundane incidents and the ways the different characters react to them. the result is a cute and endearing series.
Baggy (movie) So-so very dated, and very forgettable. it would probably be a fanboy's dream if someone remade it today.
Battle Angel (OAV) Good as only two episodes of this were made, it's hard to recommend. but it did make me want to see more, and when i found out there wasn't any, i bought all the manga. it's effectively a decent adaptation of the first two volumes.
BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad (TV) Good
Berserk (TV 1997) Excellent a fantastic story with intriguing characters and rich themes. don't be fooled by the horrible first episode. try not the throw a brick through your tv after the last episode, as the one downside to the show is it has no resolution, a totally fubar'd cliffhanger with no promise of a second series. i suppose you can read the manga, but i hear it's very different.
Blood: The Last Vampire (movie) Weak 25 minutes? that's it? how does that constitute a movie? it's very well-animated, but there is literally no story. there's not enough time to get involved with the characters or be intrigued by anything except the pretty colors.
Blue Submarine No.6 (OAV) So-so i know i've seen it, but i don't remember much about it. i guess that says something, eh? i do remember it tried to fuse CG and cel animation, but ended up looking like crap.
Boogiepop Phantom (TV) Very good i really enjoyed this. i particularly liked how the story was crafted. there is one central event that changes an entire city, and every episode is about different characters that were affected by it. an intriguing and complex show, don't be put off by the title or the comparisons to "lain".
Boys Over Flowers (TV) Bad this is one of those cases where being a completist has harmed me. i started watching it because i wanted to see more high school series that don't have any sci-fi or magical elements. what i found out was this show doesn't take place in any reality i'm aware of. maybe japan is this fucked up, i certainly hope not. this show is more of an insult to women than almost any other series i've seen. what about hentai you say? or cutie honey? or any of the endless boobtastic guntoting bimbo series there are? yeah, well, those series are for guys. this one is aimed at women. the protagonist is weak, indecisive, and dense. if there is something to be learned from this series, no matter how bad your boyfriend treats you (like hitting you, forcing himself on you, spreading rumors about you that get you ostracised from the whole school and even DRAGGED ON THE GROUND FROM THE BACK OF A MOVING CAR) he's still good at heart.
Castle in the Sky (movie) Good i don't have much to say about this one. it was a good, beautifully animated miyazaki film with the now familiar environmental message, but somehow lacked the magic of some of his other works.
Chobits (TV) Good i really enjoyed this because chi was cute, the show was crafted well enough to really get you intrigued about her backstory, and the humor was on target. the ecchi factor is quite high, but not nearly as overbearing or harmful to the story as it is in the manga. my major disappointment was the ending, which felt like the right ending, but without the proper build up.
Colorful (TV) Bad can't say much about this. it's a show about panties. and guys who like panties. you get to see a lot of guys reacting to panties. hooray.
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Masterpiece there is nothing i can say that hasn't already been said.
Cromartie High School (TV) Decent Here the Japanese have made a show that would fit right into the Adult Swim comedy block. It's not consistently hilarious, but it has some great moments.
Death Note (TV)
Escaflowne: The Movie So-so useless film reinterpretation of the popular series. i fell asleep the first two times i tried to watch it. with a bigger budget it's animated better than the series was, but it only functions on nostalgia for the original, there is nothing new or intriguing here.
Flame of Recca (TV) Bad the first two episodes intrigued me enough to watch more. it devolves into one fight per episode with no resolution because it got cancelled. don't let it fool you, this show is as banal as dragonball z.
FLCL (OAV) Masterpiece what is so inspiring about flcl is imagining the creative process behind it. on one hand you have a list of anime cliches: alien girl, giant robots, girl suddenly living with boy. and then they dismantle all of that and create something that feels familiar but startlingly new. underneath all the madness, there is a sincerity rarely felt in anime, and this show operates on that rather than logic- the raw emotion and powerful moments that are difficult to define.
Fruits Basket (TV 1/2001) Good even though it's filled to the brim with cliches, the humor is still fresh because the timing is so precise and the animation is excellent. like most fantasy anime that works, they take a bizarre situation (in this case, a family is stricken with a curse that causes them to turn into animals from the chinese zodiac any time they are embraced by a member of the opposite sex), and present it unflinchingly as their version of reality. the creators have fully fleshed out what a reality like that means, and it never feels like the show is drawing attention to itself just because it's weird. on the other hand, the show is extremely cutesy, has mixed messages about what it means to be selfless, and the protagonist never changes, she only serves as a vehicle for growth in the supporting characters. all in all enjoyable, i'm not sure i would like it as much if i were to watch it again.
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Not really good a highly overrated show, and i can see why. it has everything anime fans want: good animation, cool costumes and character designs, an alternate world with magic and intrigue, lots of cool fighting. unfortunately, the show rarely delivers in any other area. The jokes are lame and repetitive (there should be a drinking game for every time Hughes mentions his daughter, Ed gets mad at someone for calling him short, etc.), the drama is forced and unmotivated, and the characters have maybe two personality traits each making their actions completely predictable. the writing for the show is also terrible, using cheap ploys (such as talking about a character but never mentioning his name, only referring to him as "that person") at an attempt to preserve suspense. what the writers choose to ignore is that no one talks like that, and the audience knows who they're talking about anyway. it's this kind of laziness that i can't tolerate from anime anymore, and i've seen enough of it.
Fullmetal Alchemist: The Movie - Conqueror of Shamballa Not really good a fitting conclusion to the popular tv series, in that it is every bit as dumb, in particular for its moralistic slant and the direction the series took in suggesting earth is a parallel world. the characters ae every bit as dense and uninteresting, but the animation is top-notch (except for the cel-shaded CGI fusion they attempted which made some key scenes look like Viewtiful Joe). See it if you enjoyed the series, it ties everything up.
Genshiken (TV) Very good This was a great comedy portraying Japanese otaku and their day-to-day lives. It was honest and well paced. If you appreciated Otaku no Video, this is a simpler approach to the same idea.
Genshiken (OAV) Good
Genshiken 2 (TV) Decent
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Very good One might argue that this film's entire purpose is to manipulate the emotions of the viewer, however, any film portraying the atrocities committed to Japanese civilians during World War II should either make you cry or make you sick. Everyone knows we dropped two atomic bombs on the country, but many people seem to forget that we destroyed the majority of their other major cities by firebombing them. This film follows two children after the firebombing of Kobe, and how they try and fend for themselves despite illness and food shortages. It gives perspective to these events so I recommend seeing it at least once, and possibly never again after that.
GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka (TV) Good it's been a while since i've seen this. i'm aware it's a fan favorite, and i'm also aware it's no masterpiece. but it's damn funny.
Gunbuster (OAV) Good One of Anno's first projects, it seems to focus more on exploiting anime cliches than i had hoped it would. girls are piloting giant robots battling aliens in space, the ecchi factor is quite high, and super-secret special moves abound. on a certain level, anno does seem seem like he's trying to distinguish himself. i really liked how time factored into the story, for example, missions would take the main characters a few weeks to complete, while several years have gone by on earth. this device led to a startlingly beautiful conclusion, even though much of the series was underwhelming. it's worth a look at only 6 episodes. it gives some perspective to where Evangelion came from.
Gunbuster 2: Diebuster (OAV) Decent slicker animation than the original, cool opening theme song from Round Table. other than that, only the high ecchi factor survives. it was fun, but, forgettable in the end.
Gunsmith Cats (OAV) Good this is definitely a bit of a guilty pleasure. cute girls with guns and fast cars being bounty hunters. fan service aside, however, the writing is considerably better than most shows with the same concept. this is due in part to the creator's desire to be authentic, as the show is actually set in Chicago, and the animators went there to do research. many of the backgrounds are drawings of actual places. and the cars and guns are all drawn from real models; the sounds for the guns are the actual guns being fired. if you like the 3 episode ova, read the manga next.
