motionmind's Anime

Will not finish Rating Comment
5 Centimeters Per Second (movie) So-so Watching exquisite paint dry, is still watching paint dry. The animation quality isn't enough to make up for the way the story drags.
Blassreiter (TV) Not really good You'd get better storylines and animation from Witchblade, though the fan service in WB is way over the top compared to Blassreiter. BL tries to be a serious, mature series, but the lack of interesting characters, stiff animation and unoriginal story keep it from ever taking off.
Bleach (TV) Weak (dub & sub) I've seen 80-something episodes of this anime series, including the conclusion of (finally, it only took 63 or so episodes) the story arc that was begun with the very first episode. While this series has its shining moments in writing and comedy, for the most part it is simply a vehicle for merchandising much like Pokemon. The stories are stretched beyond interesting limits and each episode feels like nothing was truly accomplished or revealed without seeing several other episodes that help build into a single, and often, unimportant revelation. These seemingly unimportant revelations are, in time, built into a cohesive portion of the story but the overall effect is that the creators are simply stalling for time to try and keep you from realizing that you just spent 60 episodes watching nothing but character introductions and dull battles filled with obvious, witless banter. Most of the battle scenes are repeats of the lessons that Ichigo should have learned by episode 30, but he still never seems to, and span an average of 3 episodes each while repeating some of the same footage to stretch the non-action even further. The character designs are somewhat varied and interesting, but the more characters they introduce, the more you start seeing personality bleed between some of them until they seem like the same person with a different body. I just can't take it any more, I finished the first story arc obsessively hoping to be done with it and expecting to feel some sort epiphany when it was over, but they just used it to launch into the next story arc. This next arc turns out to be a brief stalling tactic to keep you watching until they actually pick up where they left off at the end of the first arc. Ladies and gentlemen, this series is the domain of the scariest form of Otaku and I recommend you stay away from any series that goes over 100 episodes because none of them can keep a decent story going for that length of time generally speaking.
D.N.Angel (TV) Weak An interesting story idea marred by insipid high school drama.
DNA Hunter (OAV) Worst ever This is what happens when you don't read the synopsis of an anime...you end up watching a crappily animated Hentai.
Dominion Tank Police (OAV) Bad Cheesy in a bad way, terrible animation, awful voice dubs. I didn't get far enough in to see if the story was ever going to go anywhere and I really don't care, this thing is pure crap.
Full Metal Panic! (TV) Weak Oh, the typical Mech/High School drama/teenage love crap that seems to fill up so many of the main stream animes.
(The) Galaxy Railways (TV) Bad I couldn't get past the first episode. Trains in space, sure, but at least try and make it interesting.
(The) Girl Who Leapt Through Time (movie) So-so I simply couldn't finish this as the story seemed to be going nowhere and I really didn't care enough about her leaping through time. The animation was good, but that didn't get me to finish the more beautiful 5 Centimeters, so it's really doing nothing for me here.
Haibane Renmei (TV) Weak They completely ignore all of the cool things that could have been done with a story about a walled city where angels and people live together and instead made this into a run-of-the-mill drama.
Juden Chan (TV) Awful This fan service vehicle attempts to make fun of itself to try and compensate for how insipid it is. The joke, however, is on you.
Kannagi: Crazy Shrine Maidens (TV) Weak Magical girl BS. After watching the first episode I thought this could be decent but also had the capacity to be utterly insipid. Halfway through that's as far as I plan on going. This is yet another 2 episode OVA's worth of story that's been stretched with faux high school drama and fan-service (albeit a very minimal fan-service.) It's meant more as a comedy, but it's painfully goofy and not really funny, like Dane Cook with panty-shots.
Linebarrels of Iron (TV) Bad This anime tries to steal successful ideas from several other series and combine them. What they've come up with is Frankenstein's monster; lumbering, unintelligent and devoid of a soul.
Natsume's Book of Friends (TV) Not really good This looks and feels like Mushi-shi except geared more toward children. It's got a less mature animation style and story (though this one does have an arch). Not really getting into it.
Noir (TV) So-so The production quality is pretty terrible and the story drags.
Perfect Blue (movie) Not really good I'm really fed up with anime that has mental breakdown as it's central theme. It's not that there's not a world of things to do with that theme, just that this and so many others don't do anything particularly interesting with it. That and I can't stand the Japanese obsession with pop idols.
Red Garden (TV) Bad Singing?!? Are you fucking kidding me?!?! That's pretty much been it for the first 8 episodes: singing, mental breakdowns and annoying high school drama. Four undead girls are attacking people that turn into dog-ish people with fucking sticks and baseball bats while trying to avoid another mental meltdown. There are moments of homage to vampires and werewolves, but make no mistake, these are uselessly pale imitations. I still love the character designs on the four main girls and think they're unusually well-fleshed visually instead of being like so many other characters that look like they could have come from any of a handful of other series. Not Planning on finishing this one, but it's still a possibility I guess.
Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei (TV) Good This is one insane series. Seriously. Insane. It's meant to be a comedy, but it doesn't translate 100% into the American sense of humor. It is a very unique and cool style of animation, but its content is so off-the-wall that I've been skipping ahead in the episodes as it starts to get repetitive. Not sure if there's any real story that's going to happen here as all the eps so far have been barely connected. I just can't finish this...too many fast-paced jokes that are either only understandable to someone well-versed in Japanese culture or are only funny to said group. *Ok, I'm giving ip on this one for the time being since it's so hard to watch. The animation style is really interesting, but I feel like a good portion of the joke is lost with subtitles, nevermind losing the visual puns because I'm having to pay to much attention to the translations of on-screen elements. Still, a very entertaining and smart series of unconnected stories.
Viewtiful Joe (TV) Weak A slightly different animation style than the usual, but it doesn't make up for this being the type of anime that takes what should be a short battle scene and stretches it into an entire episode. I'm having a hard time staying interested as a result. The english dub isn't bad though, and that's saying a lot considering how many better animes got much worse voice treatment. Still, this is probably goin to be an anime that I finish only if I get desperate.
Welcome to the NHK (TV) Not really good This started out with a really cool idea, but watching the mental anguish of the characters while they try to sort out their lives is just not my thing.
Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei (TV) Good Same for me as the first season of this anime...too many fast-paced jokes that are either only understandable to someone well-versed in Japanese culture or are only funny to said group. Pretty cool animation though.
