Akira (movie) So-so I really, really like the song over the end credits, though. RASSERA RASSERA RASSE-RASSE-RASSERA. Also the constant "TETSUO!" "KANEDA!" screaming and blob-transformings are comedy gold.
Android Kikaider - The Animation (TV) Bad
Angel's Egg (movie) Decent An interesting curiosity, but its pace and ponderousness can be utterly grueling if you're not in the right mood for it.
anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day (TV) Weak Anjou was interesting and Poppo was likable, but the rest of the main cast is pretty intolerable. Menma in particular. HOLY SHIT, she was absolutely unbearable. Like fucking nails on chalkboard. And considering the whole show's plot summary is basically EVERYONE HAS BONERS (emotional, physical, or both) FOR MENMA, welp. Too melodramatic, frustrating, and stupid in the end to be worth a positive in my book in the end. OH MY GOD IT SERIOUSLY TOOK 9 EPISODES FOR THEM TO REALIZE MENMA COULD MOVE SHIT JESUS H. CHRIST. I think it could've been much more successful as a live-action drama.
Baccano! (TV) Excellent MORE STUFF LIKE THIS, PEOPLE! Completely over-the-top, hilarious, with great action. Very well done. Some of the most flat-out entertaining situations and characters I've seen in anime in YEARS.
Boogiepop Phantom (TV) Very good A solid, enjoyable mindbender.
Call Me Tonight (OAV) So-so
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (TV) So-so
Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (TV) Not really good
Cowboy Bebop (TV) Masterpiece <3
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Excellent Not as good as Bebop proper, but pretty and enjoyable nonetheless. Also contains one of my favorite Bebop songs, "Gotta Knock a Little Harder" so extra credit!
Crest of the Stars (TV) So-so
Cromartie High School (TV) Excellent From the moment Freddie Mercury showed up, I knew this show would be something special.
Death Note (TV) Good I dropped the Death Note manga after a certain famous spoiler midway through which I GREATLY disagreed with, so I took this as the opportunity to finish the story. Not so great. Nothing worse than a story which starts out exceptionally strong, but craps all over itself by the end. The beginning is excellent, parts of the middle decent, and ending so-so to bad, so the average is good.
Den-noh Coil (TV) Very good A surprisingly insightful, smart, and moving series geared for younger audiences, brought down a bit by its ending.
Descendants of Darkness (TV) Not really good I kind of doubt I was supposed to laugh at this series as much as I did. But if you start off a series with an opening animation that has a little boy in tiny shorts hugging a doll, what am I supposed to do BESIDES laugh? Additionally, the opening theme is one of the worst I've ever heard. Sounds like cats in a bag being hit by bricks.
Detroit Metal City (OAV) Excellent The second funniest anime I've ever seen (after Cromartie). The episode with Negishi as Krauser trying to instill knowledge in his brother on the family farm had me in absolute stitches.
Dragon Half (OAV) So-so This was a lot funnier when I was 14. Nine years later and it just doesn't hold up.
Excel Saga (TV) Excellent HAIL ACROSS.
FLCL (OAV) Weak Hell of overrated.
Fullmetal Alchemist (TV) Excellent The ending kind of went to hell in a handbasket, but overall it's pretty great.
Ga-Rei-Zero (TV) Very good
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (TV) Excellent
Giant Robo (OAV) Excellent Goddammit, why did this show have to set up for episodes that don't exist?! What happened next?! I want to know about Big Fire! Why did that one Magnificent Ten member have such an amazing hat!? WHY MUST YOUR LENGTH BE FINITE, GIANT ROBO. WHY.
Grave of the Fireflies (movie) Masterpiece In highschool this movie was voted Most Likely to Make You Want to Die.
Gurren Lagann (TV) Very good Please, giant robot anime, more like this and less like the Evangelion. I loved the ridiculous, over-the-top hot-bloodedness of this show. MIGHTY PASSIONATE SPEECHES! LET'S PUNCH THE UNIVERSE! IN THE FACE! I'm on board with that. The only things that drag it down are the annoying over-emphasis on boobs+butt fanservice (oh yoko you can be awesome and not half-naked, it is indeed possible) in the early episodes and the punch-in-the-gut ending which undermines a lot of the series' "FUCK YOUUU SO-CALLED 'DESTINY', I DO WHAT I WANT" philosophy.
Honey and Clover (TV) Very good It's unlikely I'll ever rate this higher than Very Good, since I think Hagu is utterly grating. The fact that at least two characters fall INSTANTLY in love with her 8 year old-looking-and-acting self is exceptionally weird. If she looked the way she does but BEHAVED like the grown woman she allegedly is, I'd have no trouble.
Howl's Moving Castle (movie) Very good Better than, like, 98% of all anime movies, but I personally did not become as invested in it as I did with Miyazaki's other works. The visuals are absolutely phenomenal, the music is stirring, and the directing is top notch, as per usual. But... I thought the storyline didn't have enough focus or exposition. A wandering plot can work for nostalgic, atmospheric fare like Kiki or Totoro, but this movie felt like there was a strong plot in there, but it just wasn't in focus.
(The) Irresponsible Captain Tylor (TV) Good COME TOGEZA I JUST SINK OF TOMORROW! I can only remember the characters from this show, but I do recall that I really liked it a lot.
Kaiba (TV) Excellent Very, very well done. Great music, wonderful visuals, and powerful story that gently guides the viewer by the hand without bludgeoning them over the head. Expects intelligence from its viewers. I really, REALLY wish anime tried for more inventive visual styles like this, as opposed to yet more iterations of "KYUN KYUN MOEBLOB PANTY-CHAN"
Kakurenbo - Hide & Seek (movie) Decent This was fun. Good monster design.
(The) Legend of the Galactic Heroes (OAV) Masterpiece Currently watching. Fuck yeah! You can only wish you were as cool as this show.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes: My Conquest is the Sea of Stars (movie) Excellent
Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overture to a New War (movie) Excellent
Library War (TV) Very good
Lovely Complex (TV) Very good
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (movie) Masterpiece Best Lupin, accept no substitutes.
Lupin III: The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure (special) Not really good Pretty worthless aside from Zenigata (who is always a treat) and the name "Herr Mafroditte". To use a tired phrase: lol.
Macross Frontier (TV) Very good Sheryl is better than Ranka. The fact that there is disagreement to this statement at all is very disappointing. You disappoint me, world.
Mononoke (TV) Very good
Monster (TV) Masterpiece Bestbestbest anime #1. Anyone who isn't profoundly moved at least once during this series is a cold, unfeeling robot with horrible metal claws and a spare can of WD40 where his heart should be.
Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku (OAV) Very good
My Neighbor Totoro (movie) Masterpiece
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (movie) Masterpiece HEARTS!
Neon Genesis Evangelion (TV) Awful An utterly loathsome pile that began with promise and flair and delivered only whining from the worst characters in the history of anything ever.
Night on the Galactic Railroad (movie) Excellent Very slow, but haunting in a way few movies are. Beautiful and stirring, though its messages and deliberate pace will be lost on the impatient and foolish.
Oh My Goddess! (OAV) Bad Why does everyone like this. It's boring and Belldandy is to personality as white-out is to color.
Ouran High School Host Club (TV) Excellent
Pani Poni Dash! (TV) So-so Anime comedy once again proving itself not terribly funny. I did lol at the Drifting Classroom reference very early on, though.
Paranoia Agent (TV) Masterpiece Even if I wasn't an unrepentant Satoshi Kon whore, this series would still be beyond spectacular. Alternately hilarious, sad, creepy, and just plain weird, it's a treasure.
Perfect Blue (movie) Masterpiece This movie made my skin crawl and my mind reel in the most wonderful ways.
Phoenix (TV) Very good
Princess Mononoke (movie) Masterpiece
Princess Tutu (TV) Good
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (TV) Excellent
RahXephon (TV) Excellent Likeable characters, an interesting story that remains coherent, exploration of troubling themes without resorting to condescension and public couch-tripping, and the fact that the last episodes are actualy ANIMATED = better than Eva in every conceivable way.
Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV) Masterpiece Currently watching. Rad! Alternately funny, moving, horrifying, and sad, while being smart and stylish throughout.
Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie Good
Rideback (TV) Decent
Samurai Champloo (TV) Good Yeah the art's great and a couple of the episodes were pretty nice. No Bebop, though.
Scrapped Princess (TV) Decent
Spice and Wolf (TV) So-so
Spice and Wolf II (TV) So-so
Spirited Away (movie) Masterpiece Amazing. There are scenes in this that take my breath away every time, particularly when the train is gliding across the seemingly endless water.
Tentai Senshi Sunred (TV) Excellent
Tentai Senshi Sunred (TV 2) Excellent
Texhnolyze (TV) Bad Currently watching. Am not sure what to make of it yet, but it hasn't turned me off enough to quit yet.
They Were 11 (movie) Very good The first subtitled anime I ever saw. It was 1999, I was 12, and I decided to rent the tape just because the cover looked interesting. That could have ended very, very badly. But it didn't, because They Were 11 is quite nice.
Welcome to Irabu's Office (TV) Excellent
Witch Hunter Robin (TV) So-so I liked a couple of things about this, but... eh. There just didn't seem to be any emotion or passion in this series, at least not until way too late in the game.
Wolf's Rain (TV) So-so Terrific art, wonderful music, and solid acting, but decidedly MEH where it really counts: characters, pacing, and plot. The ending was a also a great big sticky puddle of WTF.
Wolf's Rain (OAV) So-so See TV remarks.
xxxHOLiC (TV) Good You know in those old Tom and Jerry cartoons where Tom would grab something while his feet get stuck in one position, and he gets stretched out ridiculously long? Yeah. Yeaaah. yeah. That said, there's a strange sort of charm to this show. That charm's name is Doumeki.
Zan Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei (TV) So-so
Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou-sensei (TV) So-so
