Anime I'm watching at the moment, and a few that I haven't finished in the past.

Read some Rating Comment
Adachi and Shimamura (light novel) The anime covers about the first 4 vols. of LNs. Quite some details are left out of course.
I kinda like the odd personalities of the characters. Not just the two main girls, but Hino, Nagafuji and, Shimamura's little sister too. Hino&Nagafuji are pretty much a couple too, as are in a way Shou and Yashiro. They give some contrast to A&S, but they're fun to follow on their own too. Nagafuji is hilarious, Yashiro mostly mysterious.
This romance moves very, very slowly. It isn't until the end of vol.6 that Adachi confesses her love to Shimamura. All along it kinda felt like Shimamura was just kinda indifferent to everyone around her, including Adachi, so it's nice that she accepted Adachi's love anyway. After that the story shows that even though she was indifferent at first, Shimamura slowly grew to love Adachi too. Vol.8 and 9 felt kinda like they were setting up an ending, what with all the flashbacks and -forwards, but the story hasn't ended yet, and it feels like it might continue a bit longer.
Up to vol.7 has been officially translated, with some not quite fitting-feeling modern English colloquialisms. It might be true that the original had similar phrases in Japanese, but it still looks a little weird. The fan translation (up to vol.9 now) feels better in that regard.
Amanchu! (manga) Very good Couldn't resist reading the first few chapters while waiting for the anime to finish broadcasting. Only the introduction though; I don't want to spoil the story yet ^_^;
Watched the anime, and now I'm curious how gay the manga is. Looks like the anime stuck really close to the manga. Only a few chapters reshuffled, and not the one I thought.
Ch.24 was just dripping with subtext. Not that the others weren't already. Chs.25 and 35 reminded me of Kotonoba Drive. Oh, and ch.38 went Flying Witch. Chs.36 and 46 were silly borderline-ecchi comedy :/ Ch.48 was another supernatural mystery one.
This manga feels like it lost its focus in recent (say, the last 15 or so) chapters. The heavy subtext is gone, there's very little actual diving (there wasn't in early chapters either, but at least there were diving-related things), and the character focus is also diluted among a larger cast. It's still okay, but not as good as it was. Read up to ch.51 (2016-11-19).
Chs.52-55 are all magic dreaming about "Peter Pan", who turns out to be Towano, Katori-sensei's colleague/new boyfriend. Let's get back to the diving now, okay? Oh, after that we get a lot more diving. Also two more club members. Read up to ch.64 (2018-08-20).
Asahinagu (manga) Naginata are pretty cool. There's no yuri so far, and it doesn't look like that's going to happen later either, but at least it's not super het. Read up to up to ch.32 (2021-04-11).
A Centaur's Life (manga) Got curious about how this depicts centaurs since I've been wondering how these critters could dress themselves or even wipe their own behinds. Apparently they're just really flexible, and maybe shorter than horses?
This is pretty cute slice-of-life. The early chapters had some so-so stuff, but not really bad or a lot. I'll have to check out the anime after it's finished.
Caught up to where scanlation is (vol.5,ch.65,p.4). Well, that was good, but kinda weirdly mixed genre. It can't quite settle on whether it just wants to be slice-of-life or alternate history or sci-fi or fantasy. Most of the time it's cute slice-of-life (even ultra cute when Shino or the younger Manami sisters are involved). Now and then it suddenly swerves to alternate history though, where a whole chapter goes into some background world-political or historical events. Kinda unsettling when it goes from ultra cute kindergarten antics in one chapter to alternate-history slavery or WW2. Then there are often hints about aliens meddling in all sorts of things, which makes it more sci-fi. The Antarcticans do that too, but that's more world-political background. The aliens are just weird. And then there was a stretch of several chapters about Himeno and Shino being stuck in some sort of medieval fantasy world with regular four-limbed humans, complete with magic. I don't know if this is just the author trying to derail his own story or if it's going somewhere ultimately, but as it is, these elements don't fit in with the slice-of-life aspect very well (or at all). When it's cute it's really cute though, and the world-building is pretty thorough. I wonder what the anime will make of it.
Wow, I hadn't read this manga in a long time, had I? The official translation seems pretty good, except they keep using variations on "big sis"/"sissie" for 姉, which is just annoying. They do translate the end-of-chapter background texts though, which adds a lot. The manga itself continues to swerve in all directions. Alternate history, fairytales, magic, aliens all appear now and then, on top of the increasing mixing of the regular stories of Himeno&friends and the world-politics stories about Antarcticans and amphibianfolk. Not sure that's a great idea, but it feels like it's gradually building up to (maybe?) some grand conclusion. The subtle differences in design between some characters as well as the huge cast make it hard to remember who's who sometimes. Still a good manga. Even if it's not always great, it's at least very intriguing and thoroughly built. Up to vol.15,ch.116 (+afterword) now (2019-09-22).
Delicious in Dungeon (manga) Recommended by Leah. This is really good. Art, story, world-building, even the characters are intriguing. 2020-10-16, ch.68.
Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon (manga) A sweet love story about two OLs, at least one of them ace it seems. Up to ch.11 as of 2020-12-03.
(The) Elder Sister-like One (manga) Slice-of-life, sometimes slightly ecchi. Shub-Niggurath as onee-san. Cute, but so far it hasn't done much Cthulhu mythos stuff. Read up to ch.45 as of 2022-05-24.
Flying Witch (manga) I read a bit of this when it was linked on Twitter, long before the anime was announced. I think it was only a few chapters though, because only one or two eps.' stories looked familiar (Inukai's story, chasing the pheasant, summoning crows).
Read up to ch.61 (2021-07-03) (updates every 2 months or so).
Free Life Fantasy Online: Immortal Princess (manga) This is a pretty mediocre adaptation of the LNs. It's nice to have illustrations, but the story skips so many details. There's also the pointless addition of the AI helper. Probably to substitute for the MC talking/thinking to herself in the LNs, but it's too silly. The scanlation is really bad automatic translation quality too, with the scanlator apparently not even being able to read kana. Yeah, stick to the LNs if you want to experience this great story and skip the manga.
Free Life Fantasy Online: Immortal Princess (light novel) Reading the fan TL. No idea if the official TL will be better or worse, but the first vol. comes out next November. It's so far behind that it's almost pointless :/
Read up to ch.112, then decided I might get even more out of this great story if I read up on some Cthulhu mythos. So that's what I've been doing for the past 4 months or so (and still not finished). Already found that the MC's first special dress's color is probably inspired by The King In Yellow, which mentions such dresses several times. The byakhee summoning incantation is not listed in the Chaosium rule and additional books, so that must come from Derleth's Trail Of Cthulhu stories. The chain attack she gets later is originally from The Chain Of Aforgomon, but is listed with a description and non-original details almost identical to the LN's in the Bestiary, so that's probably where it came from instead. There's plenty more Mythos references of course, but most are openly discussed by the characters.
Hakumei & Mikochi - Tiny Little Life in the Woods (manga) Very good The anime was just announced, so I was curious what it's like. It does remind me a little of those old Gnomes books, especially the background art and attention to details of everyday life. There are a lot of differences too, of course, but I wonder if it was a source of inspiration. Besides the setting and art, the characters are also interesting. Hakumei and Mikochi are both adults. Their friends are adults, they have jobs, they drink sake or beer now and then. Well, the latter I don't care for, but it's refreshing to see some adults again for a change. Adults who are 9cm tall in this case.
Read up to chapter 42 (2018-06-02). The anime had some stories that I hadn't read yet last year, and a few I didn't remember, but follows the manga very closely.
Chapter 56 (2019-11-09) (two-monthly?). Seems the manga was dropped by the regular scanlation group, so there's only been one new chapter in a year. Chapter 57 (2020-10-25).
Kase-san and... (manga) Read this (up to ch.24) after watching the movie. I'm not sure if it's finished or not? ANN says it ran from 2010 to 2014, but Baka-Updates says 'ongoing', and online it looks like the latest chapters are from this year. Anyway, it's super lovely. The only drawbacks are that it repeats the "we're dating even though we're both girls etc." introduction/side line about every chapter, and that both Yamada and Kase keep being inscure about themselves. I hope the story continues.
Ah, so it's continued under the title "Yamada To Kase-san". Although the subtitles continue as "Kase-san and __". Ch.11, did they change translators? I think I heard this one's kinda bad. Anyways, read up to ch.19 (2021-04-18).
(The) Morose Mononokean (manga) So up to v.6 ch.25 (incl.) is what the anime covers. And they're nearly the same. Differences are Ashiya's mom showing more flowers at the very beginning, the part about the exorcism at the big mansion (Togetoge doesn't appear in the manga, Abeno finishes the job quickly, without the quaking, and it was the mom's mother-in-law who hired them, not the daughter), and the final part of the anime, Ashiya losing his ability to see youkai temporarily, was drama-inflated quite a bit, as expected (in particular, the exorcised youkai don't all come to visit at the end, and Abeno's visit to the underworld wasn't even shown). So from here on it'll be new material.
Caught up (well, almost, but this is all that's available outside of CR) to ch.52 (2018-03-24). We've learned a bit about Hanae's dad, but not yet how both Abeno and the Legislator are familiar with the name. We also haven't learned yet what happened between Abeno and Aoi, and what kind of youkai the Mononokean is (aside from a tearoom with a talking scroll).
Hmm, I can see chs.54 and 56 online, but 53 and 55 seem to be missing. BakaUpdates lists them as available on CR, so it's not that they don't exist. I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer (2018-08-16).
Found a site that had ch.53, but it turned out the regular site also had it, just in a different 'version' of the manga. Ah well. Read up to ch.65 now (2019-05-20). Things are starting to get interesting, what with the underworld princess being ill, and Abeno's past finally starting to get revealed a tiny little bit. Mostly it's just teased yet though. Hurry up the manga please ^_^;
'the bleep is up with this site's archiving of this manga? You really have to pay attention or you miss chapters all the time. Up to ch.85 now (2020-10-17).
New Game! (manga) Read a few chapters of this before the anime was announced. It's cute and seems fairly realistic re: work setting.
Read up to ch.64 (2016-11). The prequel sidestory wasn't really game-related at all, just slice-of-life school stuff. I hope it'll get back to the main story now.
Ch.77 now (2018-08). They're back to the present, but with Kou in Paris it's a bit messy. I hope it doesn't lose coherence.
Ch.82 (2019-05). That New Year's chapter was kinda fanservicey. Not too much development after that yet. It seems the chapters are coming more slowly now. I hope it doesn't turn into one of those series that just fades away.
Ch.90 (2019-08). Ah, so they're scanlating from tankoubon, that's why it takes ages between releases and then a bunch show up in a short time. It's hard to keep track of all the characters now. Good thing there's a reference chart at the end of ch.90.
Shy (manga)
Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle (manga) After watching the anime, let's try the manga too. I've already read a few chapters that weren't adapted.
Now and then new characters are added to the cast. A lot of the characters show up pretty rarely actually. The author seems to be fond of male characters bonding/arguing with other male characters more than other interactions. Also plots depending on characters not talking while still providing thought bubbles. It's not a bad joke, but only if it's used sparingly, which this manga doesn't. The story also gradually drifts away from the princess (she's rarely called by her name) being a hostage and the hero coming to save her. After the early chapters the demons basically stop doing anything to put her back in her role, and the hero only sporadically shows up. This doesn't make the story bad or anything, but the initial draw of the captive princess being more evil than a whole castle full of demons all for her sleep is kinda gone. I'll keep following this manga, but it's not as good as it was early on.
Read up to ch.254 as of 2021-09-14.
So I'm a Spider, So What? (light novel) After watching the anime and catching up with the manga I couldn't resist reading the novels. Read up to vol.12 as of 2021-12-17. Next English translated vol. doesn't come out until January so I'm stuck waiting for now.
Anyways, after vol.5 (Kumoko's battle with Ariel and Shun's side's preparations for the elf village battle, i.e. about where the anime ended) for a while the novels stop with the alternating Kumoko and Shun times and then it's only Kumoko and others from the same time for a while. Presumably that'll last until it catches up to Shun's time. Vol.6 isn't so great because it has very little Kumoko (or White as she's been called since then) and basically alternates Sophia and Ronandt. Vol.7 is the UFO battle (yeah, if you thought the elves using robots was weird for a fantasy setting, this novel definitely puts things back into the sci-fi genre), fortunately nearly all from White's POV. Vol.8 alternates Kyouya (later Wrath)'s and White/Sophia/Ronandt's POVs. Vols.9 and 10 are again White alternated with a bunch of others. Vol.11 is pretty bad again since it is all Julius with only brief notes from Sophia. White only appears in one scene, from Sanatoria's (2nd demon army commander IIRC) POV. Vol.12 is the human-demon war the preparatory and aftermath meetings of which were shown in the manga and anime. Which means you already know what's going to happen, except now you get the details. It focuses on each battle in turn, from whoever's POV is appropriate. Meaning unfortunately that White again gets very little pagetime. Well, from the blurb I read online it seems vol.13 at least will get back to White's POV again. It's about time this series matches its title again.
So I'm a Spider, So What? (manga) Mentioned by Leah, then I got caught up in reading it. This manga is pretty good. It's basically RPG-like, but from an unusual perspective and with a somewhat sympathetic MC. It's written so you just keep on turning pages, so now (2018-03-13) I'm stuck with nothing more to read for now at ch.25.1.
(2018-08-16) Up to ch.29.3. Kumoko finally met some of the people in charge of the world, and while she's evolving in ch.29.2 we get a little side-story in ch.29.3 about some demons? Let's get back to Kumoko soon, okay? Okay, it went back to Kumoko right after.
(2019-05-17, ch.36.1) So Kumoko has killed her first humans, and is probably going to get out of the dungeon after this battle.
(2020-01-03, ch.40.2) Indeed she did, and it looks like Mother has broken out too now. Shouldn't Kumoko be evolving a lot after defeating Alaba though?
(2020-10-24, ch.47.1) An even more powerful spider(-like lady) showed up, but Mother is about to die it seems.
(2021-12-18, ch.55.1) Wow, it was a long time since I last read Kumo Desu Ga. Anyways, I started over from the beginning because of watching the anime. The story developments started going a lot faster after Mother was killed (which was a little anti-climactic btw), with meeting another reincarnated girl, a baby vampire, getting worshipped by humans, starting a war between humans (or at least getting involved in it), meeting a murderous robot-elf (yeah, that one started kinda pushing the setting off balance), and then teaming up with the newly personality-changed demon king Ariel (she got fused with one of Kumoko's parallel wills) together with the vampire baby. It seems the side-story about the demons in ch.29 was indeed a flash-forward. The demon king is the same Ariel, not a future Kumoko as I speculated (certainly didn't expect a personality change), Shiro is Kumoko herself apparently (at least Ariel calls her that at one point), Kuro is the guy in black , and Merawhatshisname is the vampire baby's servant. Well, this story is certainly developing in unexpected ways.
Sora no Manimani (manga) Very good Just as good as the anime ^_^ In fact, the anime covers nearly all of the manga (that I've been able to read so far). Aside from a few panels here or there, the biggest parts missing from the anime are the (very short) interval between the first and second visits to Nogishiro (the anime made it seem like one), the second years' trip to Hokkaido (Ryuusei Distance only covered Mihoshi and Saku's phone call), and the Christmas party at Sayo's (which is when they got invited on the winter trip).
That's about all (ch.26) that's scanlated atm (2018-06-30) though. The only group currently scanlating it did their last release of SnMM in 2017, and the last before that in 2014, according to BakaUpdates. So, yah, I probably shouldn't expect to be able to read anything more for the foreseeable future :(
Still nothing new (2020-10-25).
Twin Spica (manga) Decent Ah, I see. They stopped scanlation because the manga was licensed officially. Well, as it is, I read up to ch.29, which is the last one scanlated. Some details are a bit different from the anime, and some interesting bits were left out of the anime, but yes, there are many flashbacks. They're often more clumped together at the end of each volume, but they're there. The whole story is almost as much about the past or other personal dramas as it is about going to space. I wouldn't mind reading the rest of the story, but not enough to buy it.
Wandering Son (manga) With about half a year between translated volumes, I have to reread the last part every time. Not really a bad thing, I just wish they'd release them more often. At this pace it takes several years to get the whole series.
Looks like vol.8 will be the last one for the foreseeable future, because translator Rachel Thorn is busy with other things. (2018) Seems they've unofficially dropped this manga completely, since Fantagraphics and Rachel Thorn are now doing another manga instead of continuing Wandering Son. Guess I'll have to read a scanlation then.
Yotsuba&! (manga) It's been quite a while, but I think I read through everything available back then. Maybe I should catch up some time.
Yozakura Quartet (manga) Decent Reading the manga, it seems that the first TV series only changed the overall plot, but not all that much of the details. The manga is just very vague in the early chapters, plus has a very sparse style. So the second series benefited from having more info to fill in some of the missing details. The first series was actually fairly close on a few things I thought must've been changed. The second series just skipped over most of those chapters. Pfft, this franchise really is messy. As for the ecchi stuff, the early chapters of the manga didn't have that either. I figured since both the OVAs and the second series had that it must've come from the manga, but it didn't. Or at least not at first. Later chapters (around the Ibara Michi & Hoshi No Umi arcs) have a few pantyshots here and there, which got worse over time (from Hana No Uta on), so I guess the later anime entries just adopted that style. Yah, messy.
I stopped reading this when the story got too long-winded around the Tsuki Ni Naku arc. It doesn't look like the mangaka intends to finish this story any time soon, and the talks between Akina, Enjin and the town council got more and more philosophical.
