In 009 Re:Cyborg, a modern classic is born

by FUNimation (Paid Advertisement),

Do you remember days when the mention of the word “anime” would conjure images of dystopian futures and technologically augmented existences? That golden era when gritty detail and thought provoking ideas were the focus, instead of bubbly school girls and other modern moe tropes? From the creative genius of Kenji Kamiyama, the director of contemporary classics such as Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Eden of the East, comes a modern reboot of Shōtarō Ishinomori's seminal story in FUNimation's release of the Production I.G film, 009 Re:Cyborg. From the first frames of gorgeous animation, viewers will be treated to an experience that dares to approach issues such as social awareness and post 9/11 commentary, in a way that could only be realized through animation and Kamiyama's visionary direction.

It's hard not to draw comparison to the aesthetics of legendary properties like Silent Möbius and Akira, with their sprawling cityscapes and painstakingly detailed tech, all while embracing the moods similar to the cyber thriller series, Serial Experiments Lain. The film's state of the art visuals capture high octane action, mesmerizing your eyeballs, all while making you think. Spanning multiple continents and various government organizations, the epic movie explores a society plagued with terrorism and always a moment away from another world war. Watching the 00 Cyborg team navigate the thin line between saving the world, and becoming a pawns to an agenda more powerful than their own cyborg super powers, it's difficult not to draw comparisons to Kamiyama's wildly popular Eden of the East.

In the tradition of Mamoru Oshii, 009 Re:Cyborg doesn't shy away from exploring the beautiful detail of cyborg technology, even its flaws. Fans of Ghost in Shell and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex will find themselves right at home with the film's painstakingly realized mechanical designs and unique approach to cybernetic design and abilities. The explosive action sequences, weapon design and gorgeous technology give nods to series like Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell, similar with their well integrated approach. The unique abilities of Cyborg 009 Joe Shimamura, and the rest of the cyborgs will fill the cyberpunk void that's been present in modern anime.

Joe Shimamura and the rest of the cyborg team have been reawakened for duty in FUNimation's 009 Re:Cyborg. In this modern take on a classic story by prolific manga artist and Guinness World Record Holder Shōtarō Ishinomori, it's no longer clear who the enemy is, or who's pulling the strings. Even Cyborg 009 is not unclouded by the influence of the world's greatest threat, “The Voice.” In an era when cyber-terrorism is rapidly advancing, how can the cyborgs combat an enemy that has no face, no weapons, and seemingly no motive? FUNimation will be releasing a special Limited Edition, featuring a silver chrome foil slipcover and 44 page guide book, which includes many of the directorial decisions behind certain scenes, an inside look into the process of making an anime film and a thorough interview with Director Kamiyama. You won't find these bonuses anywhere else, and they will not be reprinted. Make sure to pick up this modern classic, and return to the cyberpunk era of anime for a special limited sales price, over at FUNimation.com.
