Can someone tell me what's with One Piece breaking all the records.

I mean, the set a new record one month and then break it the next.

Woo, it broke 2 million copies in first week sales. Way to go One Piece!

EDIT: Rinkwolf, unlike most shounen which degrade as time goes on, One Piece just gets better. So there is strong retention as well as more fans getting recruited each month.

Awesome, impressive to see it go this well even after spoiler[the war has ended and it's actually in the middle of a flashback arc.]

The past couple of volumes contain the arcs with fairly epic storylines that reshaped One Piece's established foundations with things like character encounters, developments, reunions, and deaths as well as answering a few questions but also introducing a much greater over-arcing story that goes beyond the series original premise of finding "One Piece" and the random encounters with rival pirate crews. Basically it tied alot of stuff together even though it still hasn't extensively answered many of the series' questions. But despited all of the added drama, it still manages to keep it's light-hearted/goofy touch and doesn't get bogged down. It's probably safe to say that the next 1-3 volumes to follow will have similar (though probably smaller) figures.

But man... that's alot in 4 days. What is that like $8 - 9 U.S. million?

according to the current YEN to USD exchange rate, if each volume was 420 yen, then selling 2,094,123 books would be 879,531,660 yen, which is about 10.7 mil USD. wows

I actually expected it to go down in sales this time, spoiler[not because of a drop in quality or anything, just because the war finished and this volume is a bit more slow-paced. ] But then OP goes ahead and wipes the floor with it's own record from last volume. Dang. Just goes to show how hugely popular OP is over here. Nothing comes close.
And I bought volume 60 and OP Green the day they came out. Pretty cool!

The manga doesn't even show in Top 20 Manga lists.

Mr. sickVisionz: Well, it least hasn't shared the same fate that Lupin and Conan have had. But man... those first 20-some episodes in the anime really hurt this series' chance over here.

That's okay. Bleach and Naruto didn't really improve much since they made it big in the US, did they?

I know, but what I'm saying is in terms of overall popularity in the US. Naruto and Bleach started off remotely more entertaining and didn't seem to pander to a younger audience. One Piece on the other hand had alot of goofy things going on including the heroes and villians. It wasn't until later when Luffy starting fighting more traditional villians (Arlong and that weapon guy in gold armor) where you got a better sense of "oh, it's goofy but actually pretty cool too." But most kids wrote the series off during those early episodes. I think if they stuck with the series (and maybe if the edits were a wee bit lighter) there would be a much bigger audience for it in the US. Maybe still not as big as Naruto, DBZ or Bleach, but bigger then like Pokemon (current level not peak level) or Bakugan or even Dinosaur King.

Well... apart of some goofy villains at the start.... the main culprit of one piece going so-so in US (and other parts of america)has only one name.... 4Kids.... damn editing bastards....the damage was already done when funimation take care of it....

Likely due to the huge promotion of the series leading up to the release of One Piece Movie 10.
