The proposed bill specifically includes "manga, anime, and other images" but excludes photography and live-action materials

What the bloody hell?! So drawn p***y is more obscene then real p***y?

i still don't see the point of this, when they already restrict the sale of this kinda stuff to minors in the first place?

if a grown adult is being "harmed" by something that is "Sexually stimulating" then the person has an issue already, not caused by the material.

and it's still vague
Quote:

"The revised bill will specifically target depictions of "sexual or pseudo sexual acts that would be illegal in real life,"

the age of consent in japan ranges from 13-18 so a lot of stuff would technically still be legal...in some locations of the country. vague bill is fail

and as usual, i dont even see any harm in loli/shota so i dont see a point in this bill, what ever happened to those people that were researching to prove if any harm was caused by loli/shota and such?

and now they adding incest to it? or was it in there before but no one cared. people are gonna be incestual whether or not it's in a comic, most incest-doers dont care at all what anyone thinks and just hide it anyway. pointless

No those are Government regulated not self regulated.

It's changing what needs an 18+ restriction (curently just porn), so can't be shown on TV etc.

First they came for the...
Anyway, I knew this was going to happen. The anime companies, instead of trying to obtain a more mainstream (if less enthusiastic) audience, decided to out pervert each other in the name of chasing down that ultra-otaku demographic. Well, not only is it bad business sense, but the overly explicit scenes in a lot of these anime has angered the moral crusaders and alienated the general public. I want this bill to pass, as crude and offensive to free speech as it is. I want to it pass so the industry is forced to understand the consequences of their actions. They made this bed by airing hentai on television. Let them sleep in it.

It's probably not too classy to quote what amounts to an Internet tabloid, but some thought-provoking commentary:

Quote:
As usual, the law targets only anime, manga and games, completely ignoring films and novels (it should be noted Tokyo’s governor Ishihara, a key proponent of the ban, has written a number of novels featuring scenes of graphic rape).

The law would thus classify a manga depiction of the Japanese literary classic “The Tale of Genji” (which features a young girl being kidnapped and reared as a sex slave, ultimately being raped) as obscene literature, whilst leaving an identical version of the same story conveyed in its original novel format or as a film alone completely.

Really? You want this to pass? That's just sad. The amount of anime and manga that would be affected would be insane.

Imagine a incredible show like Koi Kaze being banned because of this bill. That show is a real drama and in NO WAY exploits anything but because of it's themes it would likely be targeted for a ban. That's sad.

These bills they have been trying to pass in general are horrible ideas. Many things would be banned that don't need to be. Sure there are things that are pretty bad but banning everything with a vague bill like this is just retarded. All it will do is hurt the industry.

I could kinda see the justification for the former bill that didn't pass, anything involving children is touchy, but I still didn't approve of it since it was too broad and would be forced on shows that weren't even graphic. This bill on the other hand which is intended for characters of all ages, is just blatant censorship. Apparently you can kill and torture all the imaginary characters you want in an anime, but if it's done in a sexually violating way it's off limits? I don't condone rape any more than I condone murder, but everything has a value in story telling. That's story telling mind you, no body should consider rape "fanservice". And incest? Really? Just because something is illegal in real life doesn't mean you can't show it in an anime/manga/etc. Murder is illegal, torture is illegal, kidnapping is illegal, extortion is illegal, lots of things are illegal yet they're staples in entertainment.

Somehow I have a feeling this bill will have an even harder time passing, but we'll see.

As it should be. There's absolutely no need to broaden the scope of 18+ restrictions. Even in the more socially conservative US, there are no federal regulations on such restrictions and attempts to do what this bill does have been struck down as unconstitutional

Oh gawd, I don't even know how to respond to this... first of all, most of this was brought about NOT by any kind of public pressure or any kind of outrage but by a few ideologues, mostly from the LDP, and to satisfy outside/foreign groups. And WTF are you talking about showing hentai on TV? (besides, have you seen what other countries show on their TV with live action?) And the consequences of whose actions? No one is forcing anyone to watch anything.

I agree, but I'm all for "more creative /less creepy".

I don't know whether I would actually buy more than two shows from the Fall 2010 season if they were licensed in R1. Too much pandering ecchi, sis-con and eroge adaptations that I won't even bother to watch, much less buy.

That being said, I don't think that bans (or sales restrictions?) are going to change anything.

This is just blatant government censorship. Anything could be censored completely under this bill, like the original naruto volume where he kisses sauske, because that's anti-social. So all big moe series have to be shut down, hentai industry shut down, and that's a lot of money gone. Not to mention doujin sales at cons. Why have photography and live-action materials excluded? I just don't get it, does Japan hate sex and that's why it has a negative birth rate? Why are they so incessant on keeping social order? Do they fear an uprising of their ever aging seniors that spend all their money at pachinko parlors? Do they hate the one sector of their domestic consumption that turns out in huge numbers to many conventions and events that involve spending lots of money? Nearly all the manga would be shut down under this bill, One Piece for violence, Naruto for graphic violence, Bleach for violence, etc... They apparently encourage criminal behavior through going against social order. Do they just hate young people because the aren't young anymore?

Like what, exactly? Do they mean stuff like prostitution?

Quote:
sexual or pseudo sexual acts between close relatives whose marriage would be illegal

Honestly, I wouldn't mind if this passed. Loving OreImo, but the whole sibling love/cousin love leaves me pretty squeamish, and it's happening in shows a LOT more often than I'm comfortable with.

If they're gonna do this, though, they need to man up and apply it to everything, not just comics and anime. A novel isn't much different than a manga, except the reader's imagination can go even more haywire than the comic edition, and live-action shows with this crap would be even worse. Anime ISN'T REAL, while live-action pretty much is.

Regardless of whether or not some material makes you feel squeamish is no basis to outright ban it via the law. Get over yourselves. It's all fiction anyway.

Art imitates life. Maybe some of the authors are trying to tell their opinions through story or just pandering to get noticed. Damn why can't they all just be jokes like how we Americans do when the subject of the South comes up.

Well this is obviously going to pass. The real question here is...don't they all look like minors in a 20 year old woman's body?
