The article is interesting, showing how even today the revisionists of Japan's crimes still can influence manga.

According to my interpretation, it's the manga-ka who is a revisionist (that is a socialism/left-wing term, BTW), while the protesting group of 37 members of local assemblies are right-wing conservatists. Advocates of Japanese apology for war crimes before and during WWII often receive death threats from right-wing extremists.

Please read my comment on a right-wing manga, Taiwan Discourse.

EDIT: I used Google for "国が燃える" and found many hate messages towards manga-ka Hiroshi Motomiya (本宮 ひろ志), calling him a liar and a masochist (what the...?!). According to excerpt pages on various websites I'd say this manga is quite truthful to history.

Maybe its just what I've read, but it seems discussing matters like this is pretty taboo in Japan. I remember reading that they still have an untouchable like class in their society today, but you can't talk about it in the open. I also think that talking about the persicution of the Ainu, the indigineous people of Japan who are somewhat caucasian, isn't discussed in media either.

Okay, maybe I'm just mixed up, but aren't the protestors the revisionists? They're the ones who are trying to pretend the Rape of Nanjing never happened.

Original consensus position, though, is that it never happened. Or at least that it should be swept under the rug and ignored.

Hmm, looks like I didn't understand the word "revisionist" clear enough. Japanese history textbooks teach their children that they were merely "entering and leaving (進出)" China since 1931-09-18, so I thought those who want to revise their history books (to a version more acceptable by other Asian nations) are "revisionists." My apologies.

The latter statement is a very true mutual agreement among most Japanese. Few dare to stand up.

EDIT: Just looked up the Japanese definition of revisionism; more specifically, "historical revisionism (歴史修正主義)." Quite different from revisionism in communist terms (emphasis on consumer than heavy industry; more tolerance and democratic).

There's a bit more to it than that, though. Apparently, the manga-ka illustrated a scene based on a specific photograph that has not been authenticated. A Shueisha representative is quoted as saying, "Some people say the photo used for reference in the drawing cannot be authenticated. It was inappropriate to use such material....The parts related to the use of the photo as pointed out will be edited or deleted when the comic book is published."

It's not simply about claiming that this event never occurred; it's questioning the authenticity of specific source material, which is perfectly fair.
