YES! I actually just started this, but I had to comment on using the old music. Ah, it's like a soothing balm. I do like the new song by Bucharest, but man, the nostalgia.

I won't be able to finish this tonight - I'm already tired - but I'll continue at some point. Gotta love these Super Nerd episodes.

In Justin's defense C.M Punk does scream "It's clobbering time" before he goes into the ring.

Something people need to remember that Gundam Unicorn is based on a novel written by Harutoshi Fukui whose a famous writer in Japan but unheard of in America due to his viewpoints. It's a show that's mainly aimed at Japanese (in particular people who grew up with Zeta Gundam) even by Gundam's standards.

I should point out that Hiromu Arakawa had originally planned to have 100 chapters (this is the reason why they where able to actually do that) but it went long by 10 chapters of content, but because they needed her to finish it she finished the final 4 chapters of content in two with one chapter being over a 100 pages. The anime was actually finished using her storyboards.

I am still confused about how Stigmata's Quaser has never been licensed considering you can just slap on (From the creator of My-Hime and

Good lord would a Civil Warriors kick ass, in fact Sherman's relationship with Grant would be perfect for this game, just make him a bishonen whose a little bit too "attached" to Grant. Also Grant's musou needs to be him taking a drink than causing a huge flame by lighting his breath with a cigar.

My taste has changed little over the past decade, while I generally do enjoy Rebuild of Evangelion, that's mainly because it tones down the things I hated about the tv series (mainly Anno stoping the show so he can ramble on about his philosophy). I also tried it recently with My-Hime, and that thing was pure torture to get through a second time because the characters rarely seemed to care about what was going on, and I knew where the plot was going so I knew all the buildup wouldn't be worth it.

Panty and Stocking is the result of when people see something that isn't there. A lot of the praise of Panty and Stocking is people claiming that it was some attack on moe or some attack on Western animation when it's simply trying to cross a bunch of lines.

The ending is based on the myth that Gainax always has brilliant subversive endings that are all weird so when it came out people confused the troll ending with some brilliant plot twist that would get a sequel.

I should just point out is this review of Steamboy

animenewsnetwork.com/review/steamboy

If Mike wanted to be that specific about the Imagawa vs Anno question he could have pointed out that Imagawa's mecha shows are more heavily inspired by Hong Kong Wuxia movies (which is weird because Mike's review on G Gundam for Anime jump was where I first heard of the term Wuxia) than Super robot anime like Mazinger. Anno's kind of an interesting guy because his clearly shown that he would make a kickass traditional Super robot anime (the scene where the Gunbuster first appears, and Shinji rescuing Rei in the second Rebuild movie are excellent super robot scenes) he just never really did it for some reason.

Pretear is a reverse harem. Sorry, Mike. Wink

It has a "subversive" ending, and yet it doesn't. Not enough to make it stand out or anything. It's a very safe, very fangirl-pleasing reverse harem where the hot guys happen to turn into costumes that give the heroine powers. But the fact that her powers come directly from the guy transforming into clothing and transferring his essence inside of her.......yeeeeeeeeeah. Laughing

Also, my question took up a butt-ton of time comparatively speaking. Anime dazed Ah well. HOORAY!

OH GOD SUCKER PUNCH BAD BAD SUCKER PUNCH VERY BAD. ;A; That was the worst movie I saw this year...best, I don't know yet. Would have to think about that.

Sobering Evangelion news.

ADV vs Gainax vs Khara.

And what of the possibility of Blu Ray?

The fact that its not even on Blu Ray in Japan leads me to think this is an offshoot of internal problems on the Japan end, Gainax vs Khara. As Justin points out, the fact that FUNimation couldn't license-rescue End of Eva is another indication of this.

Crud.

Poking fun at Matt Greenfield's dream-project of adapting Mutineer's Moon?! I jumped out of my seat when I heard you make that jab in the podcast. That was a low-hit Zac, low-hit. You son of a bitch (as Mike said). You cruel monster.

Overall, yet another great podcast. It's just a pity Justin wasn't able to stick around for the duration.

I can't speak for the fourth episode yet, but I continue to think the first three episodes of Gundam Unicorn can be appreciated on a basic level, even without an encyclopedic knowledge or nostalgic appreciation for the rest of this property. They do, however, benefit from having a large amount of patience and the ability to deal with a high concentration of exposition when the series actually tries to explain its background, but that's not the same thing as being exclusively limited to existing fans. In fact, the OVA has already described or suggested a few crazy newtype antics before episode four, so I'll have to wait and see what's up with that.

As far as Limited Editions are concerned, I'm usually only interested in them if the extra content has some sort of substance. Say, behind-the-scenes material like commentary tracks or booklets with interesting information on the production process. Just including a nice box, some promotional artwork or a bunch of stationery isn't going to interest me at all.

Something like the recent Revolutionary Girl Utena sets, for example, provides an excellent example of how to actually pull this off and, for that matter, is a fine tribute to a property which definitely deserved to be put back in circulation. The extras in those particular releases are absolutely wonderful and I certainly don't regret paying that much for the Limited Editions.

At the same time, I don't think I'll go out of my way to pay ridiculous amounts of money for Fate/Zero either. I didn't mind paying like $300 for all of Osamu Tezuka's out-of-print Phoenix manga and my latest anime purchases collectively add up to a lot more than that, but I'm not willing to pay Japanese prices for a new, ongoing series and support such an inherently flawed business model when plenty of other options are available.

On another note...I was enjoying the early episodes of Mawaru Penguindrum myself, but I've actually tried to avoid as many spoilers as possible after deciding to stop and wait for the entire series to wrap up instead. I'm only vaguely keeping track of public reactions. If Ikuhara doesn't end up overplaying his hand, I'll almost certainly go ahead and buy it at the first opportunity.

I've liked SPT Layzner well enough, at least going by what has been unofficially translated, but haven't had the chance to check out Giant Gorg and see what's the big deal. Once again, it's really too bad to remember how internal debates involving Japanese self-interest and paranoia could outright prevent both of those shows from ever reaching the market. Granted, they most likely wouldn't have sold that well in the first place either, even with masters in perfect condition.

Guilty Crown is obviously taking a lot of "inspiration" from Code Geass and attempts to target the same audience but there's one -of several additional issues and nitpicks I'm not going to list here- huge difference: it completely misses the point by making the protagonist someone who is closer in personality to Shinji Ikari of Neon Genesis Evangelion than to a manipulator like Lelouch or even Death Note's Light Yagami.

At least in my personal opinion, Shu is not a strong or interesting enough main character to provide a sense of direction in the middle of all the crazy events surrounding him. There are many other problems with the series, of course, but I've already commented on them elsewhere in the forum. Overall, Guilty Crown just isn't a compelling watch, even for some of the same people who did like Code Geass back in 2006-2008, not only for the traditional noitaminA base.

This is one of the reasons that I think it might be some time before we here anything about an Eva TV series rescue.

Speaking about similarities between Code Geass and Guilty Crown, the premise was clearly very similar in the first couple of episodes, however at this point both shows are quite different, at least I don't feel compelled to compare them anymore. I do enjoy much less than Code Geass though.

Also, congrats on the large round number for the ANNCast!

Re: anime kind of like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia where the characters are awful people being mean to each other, doesn't Gintama fit the bill, at least somewhat? For the unfamiliar: it's anachronism, aliens and samurai; mostly insane and non sequitur comedy, some standard Shounen Jump fare. Lots of "I can't believe this is a prime-time show" humor, like that recent episode that got complaints to the Japanese broadcast oversight organization.

("There was a funeral scene in an anime and my child said he felt really awful after seeing this, and is scared even now. Dirty jokes which are too cruel and aberrant, sexual imagery, the act of slighting a dead person—these are all things I would not have thought would be included in an anime on at dinner time. Even as an adult I feel uncomfortable."

Basically, the gang goes to a funeral, sees the dead guy's ghost and inadvertently pisses it off by botching the funeral rites and, uh, messing with his corpse. Like breaking off his... you-know. Hilarious!)

Did take a few episodes to get into, though. Then again, I didn't get Arrested Development at first either!

If you listen carefully Mike actually refers to Pretty Cure. The others mishear him thinking he is talking about Pretear, he tries to correct them and then seems to get confused about the title of the show he is thinking about. As far as I can tell, Pretty Cure is a magical girl show.

Also, Un-Go isn't a murder mystery show. It sets us up to think it is, then pulls the rug from under our feet. Still doesn't make it a good show, though.

I always label Pretear as a magical girl show, because it follows all of the magical girl tropes that Mike was talking about (transformations, mascots, monster of the day, etc). Just because hot guys take up a greater part of the formula doesn't mean that it's exclusively Reverse harem
But it can count as a reverse Harem too just fine. I always had the theory the purpose of Pretear was to experiment with combining genres to see if they could revolutionize magical girl marketing again. (its all shoujo in the end, doesn't really matter XD)

Then Pretty Cure came around and said "we got it! if kids get bored of the old characters, we'll just switch them out with new ones! and then they'll do the exact same thing as last season, just in a different art motif and outfit"
marketing. genius. (I love pretty cure because it has all those magical girl tropes I love so so much, but man....)

Still, I would be more than happy if another magical girl show came out and tried to stand on its own against pretty cure without relying on its male otaku audience (but then again, magical girls have been kinda doing that since the 70s and 80s....there's so many uncomfortable panty shots in Majokko Megu and Yousei Pelsia...) last year's LilPri show tried to do that and I think it did ok?

but yeah, congrats ANNcast for making 100 episodes!

100 eps! nice.

My only experience with the Fate/Stay franchise is the original visual novel. its pretty good, even though a hundred bucks was alittle steep (english patches and an awesome voice patch is what made me buy it) I loved it, haven't gotten anything but the bad 'tiger dojo' endings. Seriously, if you've never played a VN because you think they're 'icky', this one is a winner. While I admit the h-scenes almost ruin it for me, (voice patch came from an all ages version so the h-scenes didn't have voices, not to mention the sudden change of character...) the novel is just too good. If you like reading, and you like anime, (or are not offended by some softcore-cartoon porn), there is no reason not to play it. Plus in the game you can go and read bios on the chars so you don't end up feeling lost in all the mythology. For sure i'll watch the F/S N anime but I need to at least get one good ending on the VN first... the bad ones make me not want to play for a while Shocked

I like the Tomino-esque Newtype stuff in Unicorn. It's not overdone like it is in some entries in the franchise (even some of my favorites). The English dub is superb, too. NYAV needs applause for it.

Maybe it's predictable that as a UC Gundam fanatic that I'm not that fond of AGE, but I'm giving it plenty of a chance, reviewing it for my blog. I actually like the premise, but the execution lacks. I find it can be a chore to get through at times. Especially those Zalam/Euba episodes.

I've been watching Penguindrum slowly. It's a bizarre show, but is really interesting. By the way, I've never seen Utena.

I got the Platinum thinpad set of Evangelion years ago, so I'm fine. But I'd like to see somebody license rescue EoE, which I don't have in my collection.

I think Vic Mignogna is overrated as Edward Elric. But he's a fine singer.

I really liked Shin Mazinger.

I definitely wish there would be more Yamato releases over here, too. Like the live-action movie or redubs of the original series.

I like buying limited editions of things I LOVE. Actually I've only ever bought one thing that was a limited edition since that's the only thing I've loved that has had one.

The ANN holiday special sounds promising. Will it feature Bea Arthur?

I was very amused by the return of the old theme, which I somehow still miss, and when Justin didn't recognize the quotations from Dr. Weird and The Thing. It's too bad he had to leave before the end.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes is my favorite series longer than 100 episodes too, even though I've never seen it. This is partly because I avoid such long series. I've been meaning to watch Galaxy Express 999 on of these days...
