Releases in Bandai Entertainment's current catalog will still be available after February, and Bandai Entertainment plans to produce new stock on these existing releases, if needed, until their respective licenses expire.

So what they're saying is that, even if they aren't getting new shows their current shows won't be going OOP anytime soon? Or should we panic and start buying stuff up now?

Of course TotA gets caught in it. I was gonna buy that manga, too.

And what about Star Driver?

I am saddened by the news.

Instead, Bandai Entertainment will focus on licensing rights to other companies, particularly in digital distribution, broadcast, and merchandising.

Hopefully Something positive can come out of this.

The second half of that comes out later this month so I think it's safe.

I guess that explains why they're releasing so much stuff in February. Turns out it will be their last hurrah. At least I'm still getting the rest of Gundam 0079 next month, but I'm upset about Turn A. We had to wait so long... for nothing.

Can't say I didn't see this coming, since all of their current series finished up in Feb, but it doesn't make it suck any less. I was really hoping for at least K-ON S2 and reasonably price Anime Legends Hayate before this happened. I wonder who's going to step up for future Gundams though, can't really see Funi doing AGE.

What terrible news and such a bad way to start 2012.

Tales of the Abyss and Star Driver aren't affected, Parts 3 and 4 of the former come out in February and Part 2 of the latter comes out in January, so both will be completed. I'm not sure if Gundam Unicorn will be affected by this. Hopefully tomorrow's interview will shed some light on this.

Also, while you shouldn't fool around forever in picking them up, the article says Bandai will be printing more copies of existing DVDs/BRs until the licenses expire, so the only series that should be going OOP recently from them are older series.

Still, no Nichijou makes me very sad, hopefully Sentai will pick it up (especially since it bombed sales-wise in Japan, so the license shouldn't cost too much). Hopefully Gosick and Turn A get rescued as well.

Even though they weren't releasing as many anime as they were back in the day, Bandai still delivered a few good anime series here and there their last few years and it's a shame to see them leave the business. Honestly, while it's nice they're focusing on other aspects, I question how successful they'll be. Digital distribution and merchandise they can find plenty to work with, sure, but broadcast? You can count the number of new anime on TV on one hand.

Definitely not the best way to start off the new year. Sad

Gundam Unicorn isn't handled by Bandai Entertainment. That's Bandai Visual Japan that is releasing that.

Given that Sunrise still seem to be producing it I hope that maybe Bandai will, as they say they are now refocusing on license negotiation, sublicence it to someone who won't try and sell it for £50 / $60 a pop and be sensible with pricing?

Also why is, say volume 3 US $59.98 which should be £38.66 or so and yet Amazon UK are selling it for £47.20 i.e. $71.21? 'Rip-Off Britain' indeed

Oh! Good.

Still terribly disappointing that Turn A has been cancelled.

Ah, so no 'possible sensible pricing' silver lining to come of this then (I was writing my previous post when yours appeared).

...boo.
