Hunter X Hunter has always been popular. Heck, if it wasn't popular then there's no way Togashi could take as much time off as he has.

Hunter x Hunter making the animation TV ranking at this point just means something else didn't air or got lower ratings, HxH rating has been stable for weeks now.

Children riding in flying watermelons is the number one animated show in Japan.

One Piece is not even close to it.

Go search in wiki about Sazae-san. It is old enough to be a childhood memory of a great grand mother, and everyone that is Japanese knows what is Sazae-san, so is no surprise, it always has been in the top of the chart.

And Sazae-san is based on one of the most-beloved yonkoma (four-panel) manga ever created--it was a huge hit when it ran in the Asahi Shimbum newspaper between 1949 and 1974, when she retired the series. In fact, the nostalgia for that original yonkoma manga is why it continues to be the #1-rated anime show in Japan, getting ratings more appropriate for the golden hour programming (1900-2100 hours) in Japan.
