Nope, totally not going to gloat about Katawa Shoujo... Smile

But oh, man. That Simpsons arcade brawler. I remember playing it once about 15 years ago in the lobby of a theater in a mall over an hour away. It was a fun diversion, but in retrospect it didn't really make sense as a Simpsons property. Why was Marge beating people with a vacuum cleaner? Because it was the 90s and people (like me) loved that crap, I guess.

wow that neo-geo handheld looks really really cool. i hope it's real and they have the whole neo geo catalog available for it.
i've been playing KOF XIII non-stop since it came out.

Katawa Shoujo and VN's in general are dumb. at least you had an open mind about it though.

I'm not a mega-man fan but it's kinda funny how badly they get treated by capcom. i would just move on by now and accept there's not going to be a new mega man game in the franchise.

I'm so sick of capcom fighters. Ultimate MVC3 sucks, so does this tekken, street fighter crossover. KOF satisfies all my needs right now.

The Simpsons arcade game is a classic, they just don't make videogames like that anymore.

One question remains, though: why are he and Pac-Man only in the Sony-backed versions of the game?

That's simple, the producer went to both Microsoft and Sony with deals for exclusive characters, but only Sony took the deal. My guess is that had Microsoft excepted the deal, Mega man would be exclusive to one console while Pac-man man would be exclusive to the other.

That's a pretty arrogant thing to say

Katawa Shoujo is not a Dating Sim, not even if you are cynical. That's like saying that "Skyrim is an FPS if you are cynical". Sure, you can shoot things in it in a first-person view, but these phrases have pre-defined meanings beyond that, categorizing genres with complex systems.

A dating sim is a video game genre, that involves simulating romantic or sexual acts through an RPG-like mechanic, with stats, levelling up, and contolling an avatar through the day. For example The Sims has strong "dating sim elements".

A Visual Novel is any story that is told in the same visual medium as Katawa Shoujo, with character sprites, background art, and text at the bottom, and zero interactivity beyond choosing routes. For example Phoenix Wright is a video game that uses "Visual Novel elements" for the narrative instead of cutscenes.

I'm nitpicking, because I love the visual novel medium, including stories that are not even about romance at all, e.g. Ever 17, or Higurashi. (and others that ARE about romance). Saying that actually it's all just another, more positive term for video games like Tokimeki Memorial or Kimikiss, sounds like dismissing the entire medium. And not in the sense that "it's insulting to compare my glorious VNs to these mere dating sims", but that the two things are so blatantly different, that it just sounds like not acknowledging that Visual Novels exist as a thing of their own.

Zero's voice acting might have been famous but for me the star was the Coronel who could not breathe while talking.

Oh gawd, I'm dying at the Mega Man. Just check out that man pouch. Take your pick. Yeah it sucks big time that Inafune ran out on the project. I guess there was just no getting around to it. It would have been nice to see. But not on a handheld. As for handheld that NEO GEO system looks really nice.

I still blame the Mega Man thing on Inafune turning into a bitter, self-xenophobic jerk. Heck, he didn't even really make Mega Man. He was hired on late in the project as an artist. Even claiming he's a co-creator is shaky.

I hate “moe” in nearly all of its forms, but I don't hate Katawa Shoujo.

From recollection of past confrontations of a similar ilk, I find that concessions such as this are as much as one may hope to achieve.

Anyway, play Katawa Shoujo, it's great. That is all.

I'll try not to gloat, either, about your altered opinion on Katawa Shoujo Smile .

Even so, there seems to be some bit of ambivalence left towards the title. Since you say youself that you "hate 'moe' in nearly all its forms," I suppose there are some moe elements that couldn't help turning you off, so I guess nothing can change that... I will say personally that even though I really don't care much for moe, there were so many moments in the routes I've played thus far where moe felt non-existent. On a pure emotional-intellectual level, I feel that I've understood at least a couple characters more than in many other pieces of literature as of late. Granted, it helped my enjoyment to have anime-styled CGs and what not for certain scenes, but I think it could work very well as an actually printed and published story.

I'm afraid that I also take a bit of issue with some of this statement:
Quote:
In each relationship explored, there's an underlying Important Lesson about treating the disabled with respect. It's the stuff of after-school specials coated in cutesy “moe” stylings and awkward prose, but there are good intentions at work.

While I think too that there are Important Lessons to be learned, it just feels that there is so much more than "treating the disabled with respect" at work here. (Have you fully played the Rin route, that of the character with no arms? Very little drama was made of her physical disabilities; if anything, the drama (and the resulting "lessons") came from dealing with, struggling with confronting a super-aloof personality that seems to exhibit traits of autism.) Putting together that capitalized "Important Lesson" with the phrase "after school special," I can't help but feel that it comes off as a bit patronizing. When I hear "after-school" special, now, I think back to my Creative Writing Workshop's professor's recent commentary on the weekly ABC Movie of the Week that aired back years ago, and how at least some of their movies were more like the "ABC Disease of the Week": films that were apparently little more than low-budget two hour "dramas" that focused on educating the viewership on a disease or disability and little else. I don't get that kind of thing at all from Katawa Shoujo.

With all that said and done, though, I'm very happy that you've actually given Katawa Shoujo a good try and had a more positive than negative reaction to it. If you really haven't ended up playing/reading-through the Rin route, though-- honestly, it's a bit hard to tell if you really have already or not-- I strongly suggest doing so. I just finished it last night, and it was phenomenal.

This a thousand times over.. there not dating sims those only exist on new grounds and i shudder to think that I actually used to like them.. Ahem on subject well I never though of mega man that way but still it pains me to see capcom to cut off the franchise completely. I am still pissed about breath of fire being axed, resident evil 5 etc but there is no appeasing some fan boys.

Must not take much these days...

All kidding aside, he means that in the past he has disagreed with Todd over similar subjects so having Todd admit that Katawa Shoujo was a good game is as good as its going to get in terms of him accepting Moe.

Glad that he at least took a look at KS.

On our friend's spelling mistake, if you notice where they posted from, English is likely a second, third, or fourth language for them.
Judging from how I have always mutilated German myself, props to him.

I will speak for the blue bomber's greatness. Mega Man 2 is still my entry into his robotic world and one of my favorite platformers to this day; it sucked up quite a bit of my childhood as I had rented it constantly back when Blockbuster mattered to anyone. I've stood alongside Mega Man for a very long time, and I still do. With every different incarnation, I've enjoyed the different takes on the series (Battle Network was a tad quirky for my tastes, but I still tried it despite the RPG setup), with X being my one favorite version out of all of them. I guess that one illustration I saw years ago of Dr. Light about to push Mega Man's off button in his back is really coming true. I don't know why Crapbomb even bothers anymore. Legends fans still say they're the worst trolls and I doubt that image is going to be erased anytime soon.

Simpsons: Despite the fact I stopped watching the Simpletons and their stagnating show years upon years ago, the arcade game was a mild distraction and a fairly entertaining one when I went to Vegas. Since my brother and our friends were obviously too young for the casino, we took turns on the Simpsons arcade machine in the lobby while waiting for our folks to return.

The only people who think Capcom hates Rockman is Dash fans, simple as that. They seem to ignore the plethora of other Rockman games and stuff that comes out over the years, sometimes even considering it a jab at them (like this Mega Man inclusion) based on the notion that 'It's not Dash, therefore they're making fun at us' and seems to speak from a deluded persecution complex to me. To keep saying that Capcom hates one of their big franchises is facepalm worthy.

Dash is a fun game, sure, but it's probably my least favorite out of all of them. Classic, X, EXE, Ryuusei.. I find those all to be much more enjoyable. I don't think you can say Capcom hates Rockman when they gave him 8+ great anime series and a bunch of OVAs/movies to boot. In addition to all the cameos and 'rebirth' games like 9 and 10. Capcom seems to be one of the latest companies/things for people to mercilessly bash on for no reason.
