This will all be general statement, so bear with me:

Always try to get DVD/Blu-ray combos. Funimation pretty much leads in this concept, but yeah.

I will say that, no matter what, a blu-ray will almost always look better on your HDTV at its native resolution than a DVD will, even if it's a 1080i upscale. DVD's scaled during playback to fit such a display will be plagued with aliasing, pixelation, and shaky picture, and the effect, of course, is more apparent the closer you're sitting and the older the release. I use a 1080p FullHD monitor, 27", and while DVD's are watchable on it, they still pale in comparison to their HD counterparts.

Read reviews. If it seems like actual work was done on the material (digital cleanup, colour correction, etc.), then, in my opinion, it's worth the money for use with your display. If it is literally nothing but a lazy resize, then no, don't get it. As far as I am aware though, none of the anime licensing and distribution companies that bother to upscale such sources are known for being that retarded about it. Claymore is probably the most contested blu-ray upscale that I am aware of. I distanced myself from it, but eventually, I said, 'fudge it," and made the order. I'm glad that I did because while it's not sex for the eyes, it fits my display without any noticeable aliasing, tearing, colour washing, pixelation, or anything else of the sort.

All of that being said, I am not a videophile beyond being partial to blu-ray as my preferred media format. I just know that it looks better if you're using the appropriate display.

Also, while this might be extreme, if you're thinking about a blu-ray player, I'd urge you to consider a PS3. I know it's a gaming console first and I know that it's expensive, but it remains the best and most accommodating on the market. It would have to be--the PS3 was regarded early on as being integral to the success of blu-ray as a viable successor to DVD. Buy one secondhand if you must.

I don't disagree with the general gist of your post, but I have to say, I've never been plagued by the problems you've listed above. My Soul Eater BD was noticeably awesome, but my Burst Angel BD basically looks like many of the DVDs I've popped into my BD player. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a DVD, but the happy ending it performed on my eyes was damn close to Soul Eater BD standard.

Like Blood-, while, in general, I agree with everything you said, I would point out that stand alone players are not as inferior as they once were to the PS3. Now, if you're a gamer or have someone who is, you should have a PS3 anyway 'cause there are just too many great exclusives, but if you're not, I would argue the difference in playback, functionality, etc. between the console and a brand new player doesn't really justify the additional cost. Also, since you've got a 3D set, if you're going to use that feature, it should be noted that the PS3 still cannot pass Dolby TrueHD at the same time; although, that's not really that big of a deal since DTS-MA has petty much become standard.

Thanks for the replies. They should come in handy once I get a Blu-ray player.

Well, I'm not really invested in the 3D tech. I mainly got an ST30 series Panasonic for all the other bells & whistles (e.g., smart TV), plus it's regular 2D picture is supposed to be better than the S30 series, and from what I've seen over the last few days I've had it, that can't be too far off the mark; it's gorgeous even if the source material isn't 1080p (I've been watching TV and playing some Halo). I've seen some 3D movies in theatres, but the only ones that really did the format well were Avatar and Tron Legacy. So, since I really won't be doing 3D stuff all that much, would the PS3 still be the best choice for a BD player?

Well, since you are a gamer, yes would be the answer. I also bought my Panny for the 2D picture quality without much interest in 3D. I had only watched Avatar for which I thought the 3D was pretty spectacular and Alice in Wonderland which was a headache-inducing nightmare; the lesson was to avoid 2D->3D conversions like the plague. Anyway, since I got a great deal on a pair of glasses, I decided to try it out. I figured since I had just spent over a grand on a TV, $60 just didn't seem like all that much. Smile There are plenty of games in 3D; KZ3, U3, GT5, GoW: Origins, Team Ico Collection and many others. And yeah, there isn't a great deal of non-children's movies out there that were actually filmed in 3D, but sometimes, the 3D can be quite integral to the experience.

Is Disney working continuously on Ghibli films for blu-ray release? It seems as if they're doing them in chronological order (sans Ponyo), which is quite fine with me since the DVD releases are rather expensive anyway.

Good to see the Ghibli Bd's coming out over here. This way I won't have to get the way more expensive (but most likely much more beautifully packaged) Japanese release.

That's actually a decent price, especially considering what the R1 dvds go for now. The lack of english subs is a deal breaker though, and I liked the dub for this one too. I only recently decided to get a Paul Champagne artbox for my Paranoia Agent dvds (along with Paul's boxes for Lain and Haibane Renmei), so I really can't justify spending much more money on this series. If anyone is interested in what the Paul Champagne boxes look like, I can take some pics and post them somewhere on here. Smile The Haibane Renmei box is just gorgeous.

I didn't see a listing for Haibane on their site. Or Paranoia Agent. Where could I get one? The ones they have look great.

I too am a Panasonic fan having bought a 60gt30 this year. I agree their picture is phenomenal, especially if you calibrate it right. For me I went the stand alone player route and have a BDT-210 (I think that's the model number at least) panasonic player. It's 3d (I know you said you weren't going to do much of that but its nice to have if you change your mind) and since its panny it has vieracast and you can use the one TV remote to control it all (the netflix app on it is much better than the TV version too.) It's also not expensive at all. If you are a fan of space I'd recommend the Hubble Imax 3D Blu. While it could use more space shots and less of astronauts getting suited up it is still amazing. With a dark enough room as you moved through a nebula and stars they really seem to pass out of the screen and past your head, better than anything I have yet to see in the theater (well maybe Avatar is near equal to it....)

I still haven't properly calibrated my Panny, but after fiddling around with the settings (I'm using a modified version of D-Nice's settings, without the whole complicated break-in stuff he recommends), and it's already looking really sharp with really accurate colors and deep blacks as dark as the depths of space.

As for a BD player, while I do want to get a PS3 eventually, $250 is still a bit much (it took months to save up the $850 for the TV), so I may end up going the standalone player route.

SonRyu designs them (or at least most of them... I don't know if he does all of them), and he's uploaded pictures of the ones he's done here. Paranoia Agent is on the 4th page, and Haibane Renmei is on the 3rd page.

I'm planning on picking up the Princess Tutu one soon. A little too pinkish for my tastes (I would have preferred different artwork... perhaps Fakir/Ahiru on one side and Rue/Mytho on the other), but I'm not gonna complain much since a box was never released for the series.
