Yea, I've seen all of Claymore and don't really know what moment you're talking about. Have a couple of suspects but not really one defining moment in mind.

Mr. Sinister,

What happens to a certain Claymore in the flashback episodes. I sure as heck didn't see that coming.

Apple 01,

I wont even reveal that as a spoiler. It's a moment you really need to experience for yourself. I was so dumbfounded that I sat there staring at the TV screen with my mouth hanging open.

Someone else please say what it is since Tuor doesn't want to.

Mr. Sinister,

Nope. I was mildly surprised by that, but not shocked. I was pretty sad when spoiler[Flora died. I mean, WTF Lion-O? You DO NOT kill hot chicks. That's just Wrong! Plus, Flora was pretty cool]. Oh well. That's part of what makes the series so bad ass: hardly anyone is safe, and you never know when someone is gonna bite it.

Apple 01,

Even if I told you, it wouldn't have much impact since you haven't established a feel for the characters or the scene where the WHAM event takes place. When I say "shocking" I don't mean gross or horrific, but more like a complete subversion of what you were expecting to happen. If anyone saw it coming, then I salute them, because I'm usually good at picking up such things and I had no idea.

Oh, I know exactly what scene Tuor_of_Gondolin is talking about, and I agree that it's one of the biggest jaw-dropper moments in the past few years. Reports of people staring at the screen in stunned disbelief were very common back when that episode (episode 8, incidentally) first aired. It was also the series' defining moment plot-wise, as nearly everything in the current-time timeline happened either directly or indirectly because of that scene.

So I'm halfway through Claymore:

My favorite aspect is the setting. It's a dark and dreary kind of feudal wasteland, but has its moments within the towns and camp sites where things aren't quite as rough. It allows for development, exposition, and even a little reflection on the characters and all the revolving subplots. To this point, I especially like how the show has utilized its time to not only flesh out Clare and her backstory, but a little bit of the conspiracy elements within the main plot as well. In addition, I also like the whole half-Yoma, half-human inner conflict and the humanitarian struggle that a Claymore has to deal with as shown in the flashback episodes.

Production-wise, I think a big component in aiding the show with its charm and presentation is the music. It's a really nice infusion of western rock, synth, and orchestral arrangements that help to create some very fitting mood pieces be it for the action, drama, or suspenseful moments of the series. Art and animation are good, with a somewhat muted color palette and a lot of blacks, dark grays, and browns in the night shots (which makes it kind of hard to see stuff), but like the music, it fits well with the atmosphere. A lot of the art itself has kind of a digital sheen to it, which I'm not sure is either a result of the upscaling by FUNi or some kind of intentional stylistic decision by the art director, but that's really the only minor gripe I have with its physical presentation.

As for the story, I actually like it a lot more than I originally did during its fansub run. Watching it in one long chunk like this instead of an episode a week really ties a lot of the subtleties together. It's stylish enough, fairly heartfelt, coherent, consistent, and doesn't really overload itself till after the flashback. At this point, it's starting to feel slightly more formulaic and give off a real shounen vibe with all the side characters and how every Claymore has their own unique ability/power and such, but it's a staple of the genre, so I'm okay with that.

And in response to the spoiler from episode 8, yes. I agree that it can be quite a shock to the flow of things if you haven't seen the series yet. But it's one of those literary devices that needs to happen for the sake of progression (just like Ned Stark in Game of Thrones).

Overall, I'm happy that I decided to revisit this series. My own personal preference is for the darker, more pessimistic (even depressing) seinen stuff like Berserk, which is currently my standard for the dark feudal fantasy genre at the moment. But for what it is, Claymore is still pretty entertaining at this point. I would rate it a Very Good or 8/10.

Why even bring up then if you won't be specific? If it's not going to make a difference to me, then why bring it up to begin with? ...and if it's not going to make a difference, then why not tell me?

I'm not the kind of person who won't watch something because I know what's going to happen. I'm asking you to tell me and if you're not going to discuss it I ask again, why bother even bring it up?

Apple 01,

Why bring it up? So that you know that the anime possesses such a scene. If that sort of thing interests you, then you should watch it. If I didn't tell you it was there, you might not watch the anime at all, and then you'd never get to enjoy the scene.

I'm not actually sure *why* you would want the scene spoiled. If you watched the anime up to that point, then it will have a strong effect on you. If I told you now, I doubt it would impress you at all, and then if you actually watched it, you would go into it spoilt as well. So of course I wouldn't want to deprive you of that enjoyment.

It's sort of like telling you that there's some ice cream in the fridge, and then you were to ask me how it tastes: just go eat some and find out; all I've done is told you it was there to be eaten. It's up to you to eat it and then form your own opinion of how it tastes... if you're interested in ice cream, that is. If not, then you'd probably just shrug after I told you about it.

The whole point of this thread is about which is better between Claymore and Casshern Sins. There are various strengths and weaknesses for both. The scene I mentioned is one of the strengths of Claymore, but if I actually spoiled it, it would stop being a strength, so I wont do that.

Apple 01,

Trust me you will be very thankful that Tuor did not spoil the scene for you if you watch the show. Normally I don't mind spoilers, but this scene is just too powerful to spoil. It's one of those gut-punch things that will likely affect you emotionally, and make you care more about the characters in the show. I think the only reason to bring it up is to say that, from what I remember, there weren't any scenes like that in Casshern Sins so you probably won't become very emotionally attached to CS. CS might be slightly more likely to engage your intellectual/philosophical side, but only slightly, as Claymore has a good bit of philosophy as well. However, Claymore will engage you much stronger on the emotional level.

well thanks for nothing.

EDIT: to save myself from coming across as a total arsehole.

You do realize saying something completely vague like "this anime has a twist" or "this anime has a shocking scene" means literally nothing in the world of anime. I mean Bible Black has quite a few "shocking scenes".

So if you're not going to be specific, it's pointless and really irritating.

"I know, but I'm not going to tell you, or even tell you what I'm not going to tell you about. I just want to tell you there is something because then you'll want to know. Then I can tell you I'm not going to tell you because I like to make judgements for other people."

thanks for that.

He mentioned it because its a point in Claymore's favor when it comes to you deciding on the show you may want to buy. If we tell you what it is then there's a chance it will lose its impact when you watch it. He's not spoiling it just to tease you or irritate you. He was just trying to give another reason why you might want to choose Claymore is all. Anyways enough of that or else we might oversell it.

Maybe you just need to buy one show now and save the other for a later purchase since both of them might have things you might enjoy.

Good luck, I hope you enjoy whichever show you get.
