Why is Ninja Scroll soooo popular in the West? I mean, yes, it's a good movie, but you don't see people asking about even more popular/classic titles e.g. Ghibli's titles on anime forums every other day.

Furthermore, the attention it has received in the West far exceeds to that in the East; ask an average Asian anime fan and s/he is unlikely to have watched or even heard of it, but in the West it's like every anime fan knows about it (and is anticipating its sequel and/or live-action adaptation). For titles like Cowboy Bebop I could see the reason, as it has tons of elements almost tailor-made for Western fans, but I don't think Ninja Scroll has comparable elements.

I couldn't say just what the cause is -- evidently I saw it once on SciFi/Syfy (Grrr... what a horrible name change!) and it made very little impression on me.

By the way, I just love your avatar!

EDIT:
I just checked the encyclopedia entry for Ninja Scroll 2 (movie). It's still in pre-production and people are already rating it???!!! What's up with that?!

It's an old issue; some users would rate a title as soon as it has been announced (particularly often for sequels). Until the rating system can "lock" unaired and/or unfinished titles there's nothing we can do about it.

My theory would be that it is the apex for those that believe that sex and violence means "mature" stories for adults.

Sorry if that sounds condescending to big fans but I can't think of any way to say that but bluntly.

I believe Ninja Scroll to be one of the main gateway anime in the West along with Akira, at least when/where I was growing up. A lot of retailers advertised the really dark and/or graphic titles because the tone of said anime were so much different from Western cartoons that it was really more of a culture shock to the degree of, not only explicitness, but technical production, style, etc.

That being said, after anime garnered some popularity with the likes of NS and Akira, there was another boom in the early to mid-90's when Cartoon Network started airing, I think, Vampire Hunter D, Twilight of the Cockroaches, and Robot Carnival really late at night (and possibly unedited), which then created Toonami for the after-school time slot, which then made another Toonami block for night time, and so on.

But yeah, NS, Akira, and the original Guyver OVA were pretty much all they had to rent at my local Blockbuster at the time, so if that was any indication of what was available to make new anime fans, then the sole fact that it was "just there" and that it happened to appeal to Western sensibilities (we like violence, gore, and sex), then that's the reason.

By the way, NS is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I can't wait for a Blu-ray release Mr. Green. If you want me to really break down why I like the movie, then I can make a new thread about it.

Hi to all, and sorry in advance if this has been already solved, I tried searching the forums, but keywords were not quite helpfulk in terms of results...

I am looking for at least 15 year old anime (butr I suppose fairly much more).

I have seen it when I was a kid, and have little recollection of it, but the main idea was that the story told was from some sort of a god-like creature to it's child (?) and the movie itself is a projection of the story told, whgich involves giant sphere-like hovering robots, also some sort of an underground city, an in the end the main character reaches a rooom where there are skeletons, one of which is almost pressing a triangular(?) button on the wall, and once this is pressed a red(?) gun is revealed that later in the plot destroys the planet...

I realise how little recollection I have of that movie, but if anyone has any idea what that might be I would greatly appreciate it, I can't get rest searching for that.

Hey I just found this pic and wanted to know.
Does anybody know who is on the picture?
And is it an anime or a game?
Or just a fanart?

Did an image search, found many copies of it, very popular in Eastern Europe, but from a quick perusal of the English language results, nothing that claimed what it was. Although I got tired o looking quickly, every result was from someone's image bomb of pictures they liked.

Is there any way of assigning a different -- and lower-- weight to any ratings that are assigned to anything that hasn't yet been released? As I understand it, the ratings system already assigns lower weight values to users who only rate 1/11 or 11/11.

Possibly Hisoka from Hunter × Hunter?

I have a list of mecha related anime spanning from the late 50s all the way to present day, sorted by year. This one anime title keeps popping up under several years, and I cannot find anything about it in the encyclopedia here, anidb.net, wikipedia, or anywhere else. They're called "It Came From Outer Space" and based on how they're titled, they must be a series of anime films or OVAs:

It Came From Outer Space - 1985
It Came From Outer Space 2 - 1986
It Came From Outer Space 3 - 1987
It Came From Outer Space 4 - 1987
It Came From Outer Space 5 - 1988
It Came From Outer Space 6 - 1989
It Came From Outer Space 7 - 1992
It Came From Outer Space 8 - 1993
It Came From Outer Space 9 - 1994

Supposedly this list was constructed by searching everything on anidb.net tagged "mecha", but I dunno--I looked on there and came up with nothing. Anidb.net is annoying sometimes because the search only works with the original Japanese name.

Does anyone have an idea what this stuff could possibly be? Anime dazed
