That's pretty-much where I'm at with this show. She has to be like an alien or something because the whole stuff she can do with her spittle is too weird/amazing/freakish.
Honestly, she's not all that likeable. Really? She doesn't need friends? Don't wake me when I'm asleep? I don't eat lunch?
All I really care about is -- what are you strange high school girl??
I have to know. I found the manga and read up to the last chapter I could find and nothing. So far, nothing is relvealed. I hope the anime reveals more. |

I have been reading the manga for a bit now, don't remember too much of the early chapters, but don't think there is going to be some big reveal or such.
Mikoto is just an eccentric girl, a bit over the top perhaps, but that is nothing new in anime.
Think the anime made a mistake in overemphasizing the amount and consistency of the drool. Almost makes it look like it will start moving on its own and start eating people. |

No kidding. This show totally falls into the category of not-so-cute-girl doing not-so-cute-things. |

So what? I'm enjoying quite a bit how offbeat Mikoto is compared to just about every other anime heroine/girlfriend figure out there. And I love how the series is setting her weirdness within the context of an otherwise very banal setting and applying adolescent sexual subtexts without doing so in a crude fashion (such as episode 4's unspoken focus on the "indirect kiss," for instance).
And frankly, I hope they never fully explain what Mikoto's deal with drool is. Doing so would defeat the purpose of the title, wouldn't it? |

That Ayuko-san is one sharp little cookie isn't she? Not only did she get the whole alchemy figured out in one day she managed to use it to bust through Mikoto's habitual stand-offishness. In comparison Akira has been tagging along for a month going duuuuuuuuuh waddooido now.
It sure sucks being a male anime romantic lead.
I just love the extras in that first feeding scene. |

| It's kind of weird seeing you people use their first names, the manga almost makes a point of them remaining on a last name basis all the way through to current, to show that their relationship is still at a distance and is only bridged by spit. I hope any dubs retain the use of the last names and only use the first names where the Japanese do. I know this stuff is completely and utterly trivial in most anime, but not here. |

Personally I think Ayuko is seriously into Mikoto as more than a friend. If Mikoto measures the strength of a romantic bond in terms of saliva sensing ability, then the only barrier between her and Ayuko is that she met Akria first and Ayuko is female. Ayuko was genuinely excited that she also shares a unique bond, but this revelation has nothing to do with just being friends, since you can be friends without it. I think Mikoto and Ayuko will just remain good friends since it would just be so anticlimactic for the current romantic story to take a turn like this, and I don't think it should get derailed so soon. |

That's how it's been played out in the manga and I don't expect that to be any different in the anime. just friends comparing notes about their respective boyfriends. |

Japanese heterosexual females are much more open to physical contacts from the same gender than Western heterosexual females. It's a cultural thing and don't ask me why. |

The problem is, though, that such a practice would sound utterly unnatural in an English dub. |

Oka and Urabe sound just as good as Ayuko and Mikoto. They're all foreign-sounding so changing how the characters refer to each other based on "sounding utterly unnatural" is a really weak argument. |

| I prefer Urabe 'coz it sounds like "You're a babe" which fits her. And Tsubaki sounds like "So baka" which fits him (for dating such a weirdo. Sure she's cute, but come on ... you can hear the bells of Crazy Town ringing a mile away, srsly.) |

The mangaka is dragging it out as far as he can but I will just wait for the series to end at this point. I hope the anime does in a new direction since it's only 12 epiosdes. On the spit issue well It's more symbolic than anything else of how or they way their relationship is "taste this to know how my relationship is my bf". I will admit it's different very different which keeps me watching. |

It's not an issue of semantics, its an issue of cultural differences. Where its inappropriately informal to address someone by their first name in Japan, under the exact same conditions its stuffy and formal to do so by Western customs. I know this takes place in Japan so the saying might go "while in Rome do as the Romans do" but we're not in Japan and there's really no pressing reason to exclusively refer to them by their last names as if we were worried we're committing a cultural faux pas. |
