So I've been thinking that there have been far too many new arrivals that identify themselves with a J-Pop number. Now, before anyone says anything, please note that I have nothing against J-Pop (I mean, I hated its use in Another, and felt that a dark industrial number would have served its purposes much better, but meh). It's just that it's such a predictable choice now that it just gets a little bland. The song can be great, but you almost feel as if you've heard it before.
But what would you replace it with? Personally, I would love for a great new anime to make use of a soundtrack comprised of or inspired by artists in or linked to the general post-metal/drone (metal)/avant-garde/sludge metal movement. By that, I refer to acts such as Isis, Jesu, Cult of Luna, Nadja, and/or Sunn O))), to name just a few of the bigger ones right now (of course... Isis disbanded two years ago, bless them). Maybe if you want to go back further, there's Godflesh and Neurosis, the two acts responsible for laying the groundwork for said movement. And what about Boris? They're actually Japanese and are pretty famous in the movement for collaborating with Sunn O))) and Merzbow, and have experimented with everything from drone metal, to stoner rock, to pop.
