Well... Hopefully they use the extra month to give us non-buned in subs.

I know. I'm being too hopeful.

...but I still preordered the set. I love this show.

Don't really like the cover image. Maetel, sure,--- You can't get cooler than Maetel. But the composition isn't very striking/dramatic/iconic.

Good grief.

Galaxy Express 999 will always hold a special place in my heart, on the benefit of being the very first anime I remember seeing, ever. However, I watched all 113 episodes earlier this year, and you know what? It really wasn't very good, for reasons I'd already specified in the earlier thread here. I was considering buying this release anyway however, just to provide support for more oldschool anime releases, even if I don't really care to actually watch it...but hard subs too? Ridicilous amount of episodes per disc?

I...I don't think I can justify it anymore.

Sheesh, what is going on at S'More Entertainment? You'd think they could at least match the font for the "999" to the train. What a lazy cash-in.

I just hope that they (somehow) get us better video quality than Crunchyroll... Is it possible with the number of episodes that they're trying to cram in per disk?

I'm definitely buying it because I want GE 999 and similar shows to be released here, but it'll be a same if I end up never opening it because of offering an inferior experience to what's available via streaming.

Not looking very promising...

Amazon.com review

Video quality -

In a word, horrible. With the hard coded subtitles, there are a ton of compression issues surrounding the text. The text is easy to read, but anything under the text is made massively ugly. There is color banding in solid colors (black background looks alive). Finer detail is lost due to compression. I'm almost positive that S'More just took the streaming video and slapped it onto DVD. That's how they were able to cram 10 episodes onto a single disc.

A few more important notes from the Amazon review.

Other oddness:

There are no chapters. The only chapters are the beginning of each episode. If you don't want to watch the opening credits, you have to fast forward. Hitting NEXT will take you to the next episode.

Each episode is preceded by the Toei logo. Further proof this is just exactly the same files used for the streaming service.
