I'm guessing theres been a little bit of "all of the above" going on with this fiasco. Judging by the reactions of Ichiki, how the whole thing played out, other industry members Unfollowing people from Twitter et al over this. Kikuchi deriding his own singer publicly around the same period which extends peoples negative view of him. And I'm sure just the "juiciest" clips may have been put together out of the extended videos.
But theres too much going on here for me to think it's just all a misunderstanding. Who would think up something like this as just a publicity stunt? Especially when bullying is such a hot button topic with Otaku in Japan. This was some of the ugly underbelly that happens behind the scenes that we're not supposed to see. Sempai/Kouhai relations, etc. |

I don't think that was ever a question. Most of the live streams and radio shows where the clips/translations were taken from can still be found online in their entirety. That's why the first apology by the staff only made things worse. They claimed that the videos were altered when everyone could clearly see that they were not. Take the excerpts mentioned here: http://pastebin.com/Pu2hADMc The full versions: The live event where the audition was revealed to be fake and Ichiki Mitsuhiro was made the "PR Head": http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/23525790 Live stream from the Kokoro Connect van with Ichiki and Kanemoto Hisako: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/23847650 Kokoro Connect Radio Episodes #1-5: http://www49.atwiki.jp/kokoro-ijimect/pages/83.html Imai Asami no Singer Song Gamer #170 (2012.07.20): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nmdPqGao68 (Parts of interest: http://www49.atwiki.jp/kokoro-ijimect/pages/35.html) He seems to imply that lots of companies (King Records, Enterbrain) are involved, and thus he had to go along with it and take the job of PR Head. The only one I can't find anymore is Sugita Tomokazu's radio show "Sugita Tomokazu no Anigera! DeDoooon" #86 (2012.07.12) where Ichiki was the guest. Seems like all the episodes of that radio show have been deleted from Nico Nico. The excerpt from the radio show is at the 7:00 mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yh2_joRXGXc&t And an aside, a translation of Ichiki's tweets before and after the event when the prank took place: http://www.otafez.com/2012/08/30/comments-of-zero-no-tsukaimas-author-on-kokoro-connect-prank-and-some-tweets-from-ichiki-mitsuhiro/ Links to Ichiki's Twitter for the tweets that are mentioned: https://twitter.com/mitsuhiroichiki/status/216573456735674368 https://twitter.com/mitsuhiroichiki/status/216781233361911810 https://twitter.com/mitsuhiroichiki/status/216784752835964929 https://twitter.com/mitsuhiroichiki/status/216799004518920193 https://twitter.com/mitsuhiroichiki/status/216799879350075392 https://twitter.com/mitsuhiroichiki/status/216842818180755458 https://twitter.com/mitsuhiroichiki/status/216871067032092673 https://twitter.com/mitsuhiroichiki/status/216924120867278849 https://twitter.com/mitsuhiroichiki/status/217063341435273216 https://twitter.com/mitsuhiroichiki/status/217089662093758464 https://twitter.com/mitsuhiroichiki/status/217289515193212930 https://twitter.com/mitsuhiroichiki/status/217511342372962306
I think you made a mistake here. It wasn't riya that Kikuchi made the "how lame" comment to, but Momoi Halko. |

So am I reading this correctly? They scrubbed the opening from the home version, because they don't like something one of the band members said? That is the most idiotic thing I've heard in a good while.

When it comes to Japan and apologies (actually maybe Asia in general), "words from the individual himself" could also mean "statements that he was directed to say by higher ups". So you can't really say that these people sound like lunatics. The situation is a bit like when idols are caught with boyfriends or caught smoking and then 'graduate' so they are forced to 'apologize'. This PR campaign was such a horrible idea from the start. I wonder if whoever approved it was fired. And they scrubbed the opening not so much because the band member said something that they didn't like, but because it started a giant storm of stuff hitting the fan which led to massive boycotts and people generally just... hating the Kokoro Connect staff. |

Exactly. Although there is some weight to the guy's statement, taking it a face value is kind of naive. |
