.hack//Roots (TV)

Source: Original

Demographic: Shounen

Animation Studio: Bee Train

Genres: adventure, drama, fantasy, romance, science fiction

Themes: isekai, MMORPG, unrequited love, virtual reality

Plot Summary: In 2015, CC Corporation's datacenter caught on fire destroying "The World". By splicing in data from what would have been another project, CC Corp. was able to rebuild the game. In 2016, "The World R:2" was released. .hack//Roots covers the time Haseo spent with Shino and Ovan in the guild known as the Twilight Brigade, before the .hack//G.U. PS2 games.

Air Date & Platform:
April 5, 2006 (Wednesday)
Available on: FUNimation, Hulu, Tubi

Episode Count / Runtime: 26 episodes
----------------------------------

Ok so I finally got to see the first episode of the new .hack series. And so far it has a similar feel to the original (.hack//sign) series appears that it will be a character driven story, with bits of action used to keep things interesting. Also from the start it felt like if you hadn't seen the .hack/gu trailer (from E3 last year) then you would be somewhat lost. spoiler goes through first episode and trailer and a theory. spoiler[being welcome to the world by Ovan, and also the name of episode "Welcome to the world" is the last thing said in the trailer. On second thought since this a prequel to the game perhaps that trailer is the end of anime. Food for thought.] Anywho I think series could interesting as it dives into the world of PKers, and also into the mystery that surrounds the guild and the player in them. Couple of rants the Villan or what appears to be the villan (I wouldn't say antagonist just yet) looks a little off, maybe that me. Perhaps I miss my Sora, anyways another thing, the opening song I just can't stand it. I mean for those of you who have seen the game trailer (and heard it I hope) the songs used in that timespan is just awesome. I think that the ending song of the trailer is also really well done, but the Ending song for the new anime is alright I guess. I mean it better then hearing that damn opening again. So what did everyone think?
Till next time,

Thanks for the update, Deltakiral. So, more like SIGN than Legend of the Twilight? Sounds good. I'll have to look into it when it becomes available either on Cartoon Network or DVD.

I felt it was a good first episode, it set things up nicely, and shows promise (although it's a little slow paced, but then again, so was SIGN).

Do you mean the one with the blue face? Yeah, I thought so too. I want to ask the makers why they felt that they should introduce new species to the world (Tabby for example, does the world really need catgirls?)

I dunno, I actually liked the song

spoiler[Isn't it odd that he would welcome him at the end of the anime? He would have been playing for a considerable amount of time by then... I personally think it's a scene they didn't show when Ovan revived Haseo at the start of the episode, and that its a memory of that in the trailer for G.U]

Ok let me break this down into two answers. 1. The characters look like they did in Sign, not the super cute model that appeared in the LOTT. And yes there is a more serious tone, rather then a cute/semi comedy like LOTT (Although I though LOTT had its moments) was.
Secondly I state that this series may dive into the aspect, whereas I thought Sign didn't really do this except to the fact where Bear was talking about how you play the 'World'.

Ok well I took a moment to see the opening scene in Roots, as well as look into the trailer end. Ok so here what I got, or something I am working on in theory spoiler[At the beginning of the anime Haseo is revived by Ovan right, but here the kicker that put the trailer in a different realm then the anime. When Haseo is revived in Anime its his first time playing, and it's kinda like the end is the beginning. So I am thinking in the end of the series Haseo become really powerful because he has new Armor, and also he has other weapons. SO basically at the end Haseo meets Tri-Edge and gets datadrain. So that why Haseo Welcomes him to the world again, since he has lost all of his power.] Damn now I really want to see the next episode tonite, I really wish my Japanese was a lot better then it was because at least then I could watch the RAW tomorrow. Oh well I guess I can wait......patience is a virtue.....

I totally agree with your theory Deltakiral, however, there's something that's bugging me...

spoiler[About the upgrades that Haseo gets, is it really armor?
In the ending credits, we see Haseo transform into some sort of demon form, complete with scythe. When you look at it, it's the same form he's in when he attacks the PKs in the trailer for G.U. My question is, what is this transformation and is it what Ovan has been looking for?]

Ok well let me try to answer that, or attempt to answer that question with the best of my knowledge spoiler[First I think that it's not a transformation rather Haseo levels up and gets to use different armor. So that why he looks different although he might transform. I don't think that Scythe would be a part of a transformation (if that what it is) rather Haseo is a mult-weapon class user. As per episode 1 of Roots. So in the trailer technically Haseo has three weapons the scythe, the chain saw sword and the twin blades (which he has already). I think that Haseo will find these weapons as he become stronger in the game. As to what Ovan is looking for, I think it has to do with Haseo, and the rest of phases. But yet I think it has to do with the Guild (twilight) coming together and being able to take on the PK. But more than likely Ovan is looking for the Key of the twilight. Such that would mean that Ovan is from the original world (Not Beta) perhaps even a member of the dothacker. Question being which one? Most people from the original world didn't make the transition to the new world since they lost all their player data. But who knows.] I don't know if this is all true its basically a theory but I kinda got the feeling some of it is true.

spoiler[Yeah, I can totally see Ovan being a player of the original The World. But, if he's looking for the key of the twilight, then that's bordering on obsession, after all, most of the data from the previous world was lost - proof of this is in the new character classes, multiweapon, steamgunner, grappler etc. There was hardly any proof that it existed in the previous version, so how can he be sure that it exists here? On a side note, it explains to me why his Guild is called the "Twilight Brigade".
Now I have a new chain of thought here, Ovan has a irregular left arm, Ender herself states this. If it's irregular, and no other player in the game has one, then he may be a hacker like Helba who edited his character design.]

Part of the mystery concerning that armspoiler[it's already been reveal (in the game see dothackers.net) that Ovan arms holds some sort of power that was sealed away with a key! So I kinda know that his arm will still be sealed until at least the game comes out. But perhaps more of how he got that arm will be revealed. I still can't shake this feeling he is from the original world. ]
Damn I can't wait for episode 2 I need to watch something.

Just watched episode 2, spoiler[it's been confirmed that Ovan is looking for the Key of the Twilight, and one member of the world shared his opinion on Ovans left arm; that it could be a cheat.
]
That's all I'm going to say for now.

OK I have watched both episodes and I do not see the connection to the first 2 shows other Than the Key of the Twilight. Is this new show a stand a lone or part of a story arc starting with dot hack/sign?

It's different from the other stories, but it would help to have an understanding of the other series in order to grasp somethings in this story thus far.

[OT] Is it just me, or does anyone imagine this series to be the first anime with black people? When I see the word "ROOTS", I get reminded of the movie (and the group) and think it's about .hack with pure black people.

I hope I didn't offend anyone.

I sure someone will pop on here and say "No, the first case of an black person in anime is...", None the less, People of the Afican decent as appeared in anime before. The earliest one I can remember off the top of my mind is Claudia Grant of Robotech.

Back to topic, I guess the game will be released in the States right around the time the anime verison hits. I do believe .hack//G.U. comes out this week in Japan.

Seeing as the series isn't licensed yet.......it going to take at least 8 months from when that occurs. As for the game the US version is schedule for the typical September-November timetable. My money is on later November, pre-Christmas. I haven't finished episode 2 yet (damn school) but wasn't I right spoiler[about what they are looking for?] Kinda creepy huh Laughing

Alright I just finish the second Episode and I am really interested in this series now. Spoiler through 2 spoiler[So far I think that series has done a great job with character development and also showing the different (and new) aspect of the world. I gonna say the new cat chracters which are both interested in Ovan certainly make for an interesting couple. Anyways I don't believe Ovan arm is a hack or anything like that. I think it some sort of key that can be use to unlock something. What that is who knows. Things should get juicy once Haseo joins the Guild, since I think that when (we) will discover more about the mysterious place known as the world. And not only that maybe more into what the key of the twilight is in this game.] I am really looking forward to how things turn up on the next episode.
