Questions about Battle Angel Alita: Last Order

I recently started reading Battle Angel Alita: Last Order then realized there was a prequel and started reading it instead but i'm confused about a couple of things.

I understand that Yoko is Alita and Gally but was yoko ever human?
In the first couple of scenes of last order they show yoko and erica walking through a minefield. was she human back then as she was an orphan? And is there any history of her life as an orphan?
