Hearing Lea Hernandez talk about the comic book industry was actually a little depressing... Because it hasn't improved much. There are some comic creators that I used to respect, until skin-crawling stories pop up. Hearing that anecdote in the end I thought... yep... sounds exactly like the Brian Wood issue.
Interesting to hear about early days of Gainax though, terrible as it was. |

Yeah, but people are fighting that really hard now thankfully, at least certain sects of the talent & consumers are. From what I can tell though, it's more enjoyable for men & women alike to work on all ages comics ATM. |

This was a great listen, thanks for interviewing her Zac!
It was a bit discouraging to hear some of the nonsense she had to put up with (from rude people at clubs to the sexism to the clusterf*** with a Japanese company) but also weirdly reassuring in that "yeah, this happens and people are like this, but you move past it and there are better people and opportunities" way. As a girl, it was also nice to hear from a female comics artist who has been through some of this crap. |

Man, the whole "Strike it rich betting on a pipe dream" attitude described in that podcast sounds like a totally different Toren than the one I imagined from reading his later online rants.

My stories about harassment in the comics business aren't pretty, but at least now women and girls have a way to push back and communicate with each other about the problem. Beats feeling crazy and isolated: two things abusive ratbags count on. Keep talking to other people when shit happens. And keep making comics (or whatever you make that makes you happy)! |

Nope! Every episode title is a stupid (usually meaningless) pun, Lea Halalea is a song from the Lion King musical that has your name in it. Hey, it was a low-creativity week.

Another great interview, Zac (well, Lea did all the heavy lifting in this interview --- Zac, you just needed to stay out of her way, which is a skill in itself, and you did it wonderfully).
I don't know if I'm sorry to say that I was one of those, "But we need to be incluuuuusive" people. Though thank heaven our included person wasn't anything like death-threat guy, just autistic. I was sorry Lea didn't get a chance to talk about some of her own work --- I have Clockwork Angels, Cathedral Child, and Rumble Girls and keep hoping to see more. Meanwhile, it's off to Boing Boing for her new memoir. |

I know what I'm listening to on my morning commute. Thanks for having Lea on the program.
The first time I saw one of her works decades ago it struck me as not only being different than the usual comic art one saw back then but so visually interesting I made a point of keeping my eyes out for more. I wish I had known she was local I would have made contact with her then rather than years later. PS Lea I still have that rice paddle you left at one of the potlucks before you left the state. If you make it to another I'll hand it back to you. - grin. |

I had trouble also. It downloaded to iTunes fine but would not synch with my iPhone. I removed the podcast from my iPhone both in iTunes and on the phone then re-synched and it loaded just fine. |

Lea Hernandez, all through the cast I kept thinking that the name rang a bell.
Found it, Rumble Girls: Silky Warrior Tansie, six issues from Image comics. Unfortunately they didn't finish it. I later found a graphic novel from NBM with a seventh part that provided a conclusion. Interestingly it was marked with volume number 1 though I never found any more. Unfortunately, the size of the graphic novel didn't do the art work justice. This was about the time I quit buying new titles from Image. I got tired of them going a few issues and just quitting. |

Tell me about it. The Toren Smith in the livejournals sounds bitter, angry, and all-around irascible. The Toren Smith shown in Bani Garu is cool and jokey. Maybe all those years of working in the manga industry, with all of its peccadilloes and all of the trouble from the noisier aspects of the fandom chipped away at him. Heck, even other people in the forum who had the privilege of meeting Smith talk about how cool he was. One of the guys in House of 1000 Manga's "64 Pounds of Porn" talkback spoke about how Smith basically dropped one of his Eros comics onto the guy after a conversation. |

Have you EVER considered that not everybody is lovey-dovey/happy-happy all the time????
This business that we're all supposed to be part of a Disney-ville "It's a small world" ride is ludicrous! Square pegs do NOT fit into round holes! That's one of the things I truly despise about Disney... this idea we're supposed to work for corporations and be happy all the time while the managers and co-workers stab you in the back! As much as I don't care for a lot of "Beavis and Butthead" or "King of the Hill" generally speaking, I liked the fact that Mike Judge cut the crap and was more honest about workplaces in "Idiocracy" and "Office Space." Yes, it was over the top satire but far more honest than what you see on the news. ********************************** I had plenty of online interaction with Toren Smith over a few years. He was like most anybody... good days, bad days. He had a level of integrity that you just don't see very often in many fields -- ESPECIALLY the comic book field. I've been to enough comic cons to have run across misanthropes -- complete A-holes -- amongst the fans AND pros. I have my favorites and people I would have a hard time lending a nickel to if they ended up in the gutter. I'm sorry, but they were THAT awful and unfortunately I'm a human being and NO saint! Toren wasn't a bad guy from what I experienced. Sorry if he didn't live up to all your expectations with regards to personal politics and 100% "happy" behavior all the time. He was his own person and very much the type that walked to the beat of his own drum... That is something to be admired not disrespected! |
