Its funny since its quite the opposite in the US.
Kids seem to be playing less games and playing less sports IMO
And watching more Tv and Spending more time on the internet.
Oh and Saturday Mornings have died..

I believe the reason this is happening in Japan is because they read the manga and already know whats gonna happen anyway,so they tape it and watch it whenever ,or by the DVD.

Another reason being is that Weekly Jump anime series are so fillered up and/or have the story altered nowadays that the fans might be getting bored or offended. Look at the Konpaku from Bleach being carried over from the Bount filler Arc into the REAL Arrancar Arc.

At least back in 1992 when Pierrot animated Yu Yu Hakusho and decided to create a filler character (Jorge Saotome/Blue Ogre) to interact with Koenma or when they COMPLETLY removed Atsuko Urameshi from going to the Dark Tournament, it wasn't really offensive. The filler Konpaku in Bleach are reaching Brady Bunch Cousin Oliver status VERY VERY quickly.

I actually do the very same thing, If I already read the manga, then I'll skip the fillers or leave them to watch another day.

I consider after school activities to be a good thing, because that means kids are actually doing something. Unfortunately it's hurting anime, which isn't so great, and people are starting to do more gaming now. But the Japanese work out a bit more than people here in the US of A, so they can afford to play video games.

Lets see less kids are watching anime, therefore leading to more possibly being cancel. It's just like how the Manga industry has taken a hit recently because of text messaging. Then again this could be because more people are enjoying the three new next gen systems, or everyone is still standing in line waiting for DS lites.

some of the reasons for the declining ratings from the article:

- decline in the population of children
- competition between TV stations
- kids are at home less in the evenings
- meteoric increase in the number of portable or console game machines
- children are adept at setting the VCR

it seems all tv stations will have to take a proactive approach to be a front runner as the main source of entertainment. as much as i love anime and such there are simply too many to watch and so little time to do it in. and now with being able to record shows more readily and streaming them to other devices do broadcasters take in account that in their ratings as well as all the other merchandise a franchise can produce such as games, movies, toys, etc. if so, maybe ratings arent that big of a deal anymore. Cool

Well...It's a good thing that kids are becoming active I guess. They can always watch anime later on.
