Wow, I didn't know a thread like this existed! Very Happy
Is it still being updated? If so, I have three series to add to the list.

Blast of Tempest: Hakaze Kusaribe, who is betrayed by her own clan, and is left to die on a deserted island, surely deserves some credit. No matter how desperate her situation gets, she never gives up. She's also very resourceful, and quite clever.

Bleach: Rukia Kuchiki, who (backstory)spoiler[ was abandonded as a baby, and had to survive on her own in a poor district. She joined a group of kids, who survived by stealing what they needed, and quickly became their leader. After watching her friends die, leaving only Renji and her alive, they decide to become shinigami ](end of backstory). If you've seen Bleach, you know that even Rukia's life as a Shinigami has been far from easy: spoiler[The distance between her, and Byakuya, Kayen's fate, as well as the sacrifice she made for Ichigo, and the consequences of that decision.] No matter what challenges she's faced with (including Ichigo Wink), Rukia never gives an inch, and she is definitely one of the strongest female characters in anime.

Accel World: Kuroyukihime, who definitely knows what she wants, and is not afraid to pursue it, even if it means making enemies. She's the student council vice-president, and spoiler[also the leader of one of Brain Burst's online factions.]

I'll also second the following anime:
Angel Beats!
Attack on Titan
Black Lagoon
Canaan
Certain Scientific Railgun
Claymore
El Cazador de la Bruja
Fate/Stay Night
From the New World
Hellsing
Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Spice and Wolf

Done (please check all entries in the index to ensure that that they are correct). By the way, this recommendation thread is just one of many that can be found on this meta-recommendation thread.

The index entries are correct, and the links work. Thanks for the referral link as well. I thought that thread was limited to the broader genres. Smile

My goodness, still no mention of Michiko & Hatchin?
MIchiko, despite her periods of vulnerability, stands as one of the great women badasses in anime but it's probably her determination and loyalty that makes her and Hatchin one of the best strong female co-leads in anime. IT's actually to their credit that they both have such a hard life, routinely get abused physically and mentally and get stuck in such bad situations but persevere.
You could maybe see their quest to find a guy who they, or at least Michiko, figure could be the answer to their problems as a sign of weakness and in a way you'd be right... but it's something they actually have to deal with. Discovering that this "great guy" might not be what he seems.
Supporting character Atsuko "Jambo" Jackson, the childhood "friend" of Michiko and the cop tasked with catching her also gets a mention as a Pam Greer inspired badass with her own set of personal issues and motivations.

And remember, this is a series that was actually directed by a woman, Sayo Yamamoto, who also directed Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine (TV) (which I also second as a recommendation), she actually understands women characters, they're not just "tough" like a guy with boobs, they're actually multifaceted characters that can't be so easily defined.

Well, since I'm currently reading the novels...

Lord Marksman and Vanadis - You got seven women, each with the strength of 1000 men. Of course the main girl is one of them, but she's a very friendly and open person. She's capable on and off the battlefield and fights alongside the hero as an equal.

Could we make sure to use the English release titles? This is an English language site and these shows are being marketed with English titles. Otherwise I can never tell what you're talking about.

I like the way nbahn puts the English title first, then puts the Japanese title in brackets. Everyone can be happy that way.

Is this still being updated?

A few I didn't see (or missed) on the list:

Shingu: Nayuta and Harumi
Both of the female guardians - Nayuta and Harumi - are considered the most powerful spoiler[alien-human hybrids] from the current Shrine Ascension. Nayuta is, of course, her generation's spoiler[Shingu]. Harumi tosses giant killer space robots around like they're made of tissue paper or something, while managing to be the show's most "feminine" character (at least from the perspective of the show's other characters).

Simoun: Aeru, Dominura, and Neviril
Considering its a show about fighter pilots set on a planet where everyone is female until they turn 17, it's not too surprising that there would be strong female leads. Aeru and Dominura stand out, though, as particularly "strong" characters. Neviril is strong, too, although she kinda ruins it by spending the first third of the series sulking in her room.

Dear Brother: Nanako
I'm sure people are going to disagree with me about whether Nanako is really a "strong" lead, but this girl's physical, mental, and emotional resilience is awe inspiring considering the stuff Riyoko Ikeda throws at her. There's a scene where Nanako is thrown off an auditorium stage by a bully, lands in an obviously painful way on the ground, and then just gets up like nothing happened and goes back to looking for painkillers for her ill friend.

Maria Watches Over Us: Rosa Chinensis, Rosa Gigantea, Rosa Foetida
The three Lady Roses always command respect, devotion, and a little bit of terror from their followers -no matter whether the women holding those titles are Youko&Sei&Eriko, Sachiko&Shimako&Rei, Yumi&Shimako&Yoshino, or spoiler[Touko&Noriko&Nana]. Sure, most of them are really messed up on an emotional level, but you totally get the picture that they would all do just fine if they were dropped into a show like Kill la Kill (I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person who thinks this, considering how many people Yumi manages to straight up behead in the average MariMite fanfic).

Bodacious Space Pirates: Marika and her pirate mom
This one is pretty self-explanatory: they are both straight-up action heroines who can easily think or fight their way out of any situation. The YuriCon blog actually has a really interesting article by Erica Friedman about how Bodacious Space Pirates is a show explicitly about strong female characters:
http://okazu.yuricon.com/2012/07/10/its-a-womans-world-bodacious-space-pirates-maria-sama-ga-miteru-and-the-bechdel-test/

(Edited for some typos.)
