Figures: 22 for $1567.25 down from 24 last year.
Miscellaneous: $281.94 That is $30 to ANN, $69.99 to Crunchyroll, $54.95 to Funimation and $127 to Anime Sols.

Total for the Year 2014: $9482.46

For Comparison:
2010 $8068
2011 $8120
2012 $8896
2013 $7380

Obviously I'm not trying to cut my anime/manga expenses. However I'm not going out of my way to buy stuff either. Basically more stuff became available last year so I bought more.

Here we go....

December
£59.08 - Grand total.
£45.08 - Manga
£14.00 - A figure

This year I spent £2382.26 in total. Last year I spent £2110.74. I thought I was being good this year, but then I looked back over the beginning of the year....

Here's the breakdown. The most expensive month was January where I spent £427.93. March and April were both over £300 each as well. The most frugal month was December, where I spent a mere £59.03. Generally my spending in the second half of the year was much less due to moving house and my rent going up. My average spend per month therefore comes to £198.52.

Anime
I spent £326.39 on anime this year, up slightly on last year where I spent £296.59. This figure doesn't include anything acquired through Kickstarter. I bought 16 shows and films, so the average price for an item is therefore £16.32.

Figures and merch
I acquired 50 items and spent £487.28. Considering I spent £41 on them last year the downward spiral seems to have happened....

Manhwa
£61.43 on 25 volumes. Less than last year but more volumes. Hooray for charity bookshops and Amazon.

Kickstarters.
This year I funded 4 Kickstarters. Mai Mai Miracle, Patema Inverted, Captain Ken and Santa Company. The total was £109.38 and the average contribution was £27.35.

Novels
£55.61 on 7 items. I expected to just be buying Spice and Wolf as it came out. Then Yen On happened. And Alice in the Country of Diamonds.

Live action
£18.98 on 6 items. Mainly from closing down sales.

Artbooks.
£45.54 on 3 items, most notably a Tiger and Bunny illustration book.

Leaving £1249.05 on manga. This got me 229 volumes, giving an average price of £5.46 per volume. I've finished quite a few series this year so hopefully this figure will go down.

The rest is miscellaneous expenses such as Crunchyroll, my ANN subscription and a ticket to the one con I attended.

Well its that time of the year again. Let's calculate this years damage versus years past:

Total of all purchases in 2010: Too painful to bother adding up.
Total for all purchases in 2011: $2283.80
Total for all purchases in 2012: $1783.40
Total for all purchases in 2013: $1106.58
Total for all purchases in 2014: $777.41*

Notes:
-Came in under budget this year. Was aiming for 1K to $1,500 max.

-Most anime purchases came from Funimation.

-Only 1 from NISA as I wasn't as interested in what they had lately. I did double dip for Toradora. Oddly I'm starting to miss their giant packaging, it worked like a mini poster for me.

-Only 1 from AoA as I don't like to give them any money if I can help it and the GoS ended up being kinda crappy for an LE, which did not improve my general feelings towards them.

-1 kickstarter

-4 OOP titles.

-zero purchases from Sentai or any of their brethren. While they have shown some willingness to finally do some LE, which I applaud, I still don't trust the quality of their releases and as such am unwilling to pre-order anything with their name on it.

For the new year I'd like to keep purchases down again to the 1K to 1.5K limit I've set for myself. Let's see if companies can make me break my budget this year.

*Edit: ended up getting a refund on some damaged anime, so totals dropped.

Well, lem, I think we can safely anoint you the Heavy Weight Buying Champ - at least in this thread. Wink

Here's my own December 2014 damage (as always all figures in Cdn dollars): $340.89.

That was my TRSI Christmas sale package.

Total purchases in 2015: $2550.68

In other words, by far my cheapest year since I started my anime hobby in January, 2009. (the next closest year was 2010 with an estimated total of $3500, but that was back in the days before I recorded and totaled every single purchase, so I suspect that estimate is on the low side).

Here's a year by year comparison since I started recording purchases in 2011:

2011 - $11,636.57
2012 - $8,747.29
2013 - $3,914.57
2014 - $2,550.68

I am currently putting aside $75 each pay check into a savings account to use for my anime hobby. I get paid twice a month so that gives me a 2015 budget of $1,800 to play with. I may go over that but I absolutely will NOT deficit finance. The money will either come out of the dedicated savings account or my regular checking account. NO MORE adding to my credit card debt.

I should point out that my shrinking totals reflect purely a desire on my part to rein in spending, not a dwindling interest in the hobby itself. If money was no object, there would be a ton of stuff I'd buy.

It's about time I got around to this.

Manga: $8.77
Anime: $55.97

December 2014 Total: $64.74
December YOY-$104.69

2014 Total: $1,687.24
2014 YOY: -$973.06

Saving nearly a grand over last year isn't bad at all, even if I know that it's only because my Homura figure hasn't shipped on schedule. But the new year leaves me with no car payment, so I wouldn't be too surprised to see a more spendy 2015.

That's some hardcore holding back there for all of 2014. Dedication AND Fiscal restraint. I've been fortunate enough to not have to go to that extreme in the difference in numbers - from 11k+ to that low.

putting aside $$... ...NO MORE adding to my credit card debt.

That's what I do or rather have been doing for the past 10 years now. But before that was even possible... my own abuse of credit left me with a debt that was going to affect my family as well as my friends that I lived with at the time. I sold everything I owned in several oh so sad little yard sales to avert that. With 50 bucks cash and an airfare that I borrowed from my brothers I was also able to make a fresh start. For about the next two years after I worked 100+ hours a week at three different jobs and I turned things around. A very painful lesson that one was. But the motivation it provided and the change it brought on? yep, just like those old Visa commercials. Priceless. Very Happy

@ lem - yes, I wished I had learned my lesson earlier. Oh well, better late than never.

What really spiked my 2011 total was figures - I bought 54 of the damn things which cost me almost $5,000 - not including shipping costs or taxes. I still love figures, but beyond the money issue, I simply don't have the space to properly display what I have, never mind additional ones.

Financial realities dictate my spending habits these days, but the other upside of reduced anime buying is that I'm (slowly, very slowly) chipping away at my physical backlog. I still have seen fewer than 25% of my titles and I'd never get a grip on that if I continued to buy at past levels.

I don't keep track per se of my numbers. I find it less depressing that way lol. I will sa I am quite sure 2014 saw a big jump for me. Since about 2010 my purchasing habits have dwindled each year. I'm buyinbg less anime and more importantly no anime figures. Didn't buy a single one in 2014. Money and space were the main reasons. It did llow me to focus on other things though. I purchased more physical anime in 2014 than the past 3 years combined. I was able to buy a bunch of sets I had been wanting to upgrade for a while now, and new ones from the past few years. Thanks to sales at Funi, RACS, and TRSI I figure I bought around $1,500 in physical anime. Not buying figures helped as did not buying a bunch of special editions. I upgraded several shows to BluRay from dvd and from vhs to dvd finally.

With the addition of 2 more cats in our household finances were tighter as well but cutting other facets allowed me to get the anime. I was also able to spend a couple hundred on manga and finally buy some manga for series I had stopped purchasing for a while. Plus my gf and I trying to save up to buy our own place and not simply rent a house. Would be cheaper by far in the long run to buy a small place. While it may be small numbers to many here it was a sharp increase for me this year. I doubt I'll ever buy at the level I used to during the single dvd days. Not that that's a bad thing lol. I also have learned patiance and to wait for sales instead of having to have new shows RIGHT NOW.

Guess I'll be the first to total up my spending from last month:

Eccentric Family Complete Series Blu-Ray Set- $51.48
Love Live School Idol Project and Hanasaku Iroha: Home Sweet Home Blu-Ray sets- $85.95
Psychic Squad Volume 2- $29.93
Engaged to the Unidentified DVD set- $33,48
Sailor Moon Combo Set 2- $52.73
Lupin III: Napoleon's Dictionary- $18.48

January Total: $272.05
Total Around This Time Last Year: $273.55

Ironic, about on par with what I was spending around this time last year. Unless I get a job in February though, I don't intend to spend anywhere as much as I did for anime in January due to my present employment situation.

Here's my spending for this month. It's rather (read quite a lot) larger than I would've liked, but there were some deals which were too good to pass up, as well as nabbing the reprint of Love Live Season 1 before it goes OOP again... Highlights of those deals were volumes 1-7 of Wandering Son for £65 including shipping (they're currently averaging around £11.50 each on Amazon, and they're £17.99 each in the comic shop) and season 1 of Psycho-Pass on BluRay for £20 including shipping. I also had to pay for a pre-ordered set of Love Live figures, and whilst I was doing so, a second hand figure of Umi from Love Live might've accidentally found its way into my basket too. But hey, I'd just got a new job so any excuse to celebrate Wink

Grand total £390.49
Anime total £93.90
Manga total £180.86
Manhwa total £7.57
Merch total £100.59
Live action total £7.57

New year is off to a good start! I imagine things will get off to a slow start (spending wise) since there isn't much piquing my interest as far as forthcoming releases. Couple that with a fully-stacked holiday order and only one or two pre-orders to be charged/shipped in the first few months and it's looking like purchasing will be held at bay for quite some time.

January:

$173.80 spent

$162.00 made through anime sales on eBay

----------

$173.80 YTD spent

$162.00 YTD made

$11.80 YTD difference

It came close, but in the end, only one thing shipped:

Anime: $84.48

January Total: $84.48

January YOY -$44.07

And one of these years my Homuhomu figure will ship.

Seeing as I don't intend to get anything else this month, I guess I'll total up my spending for February:

Tower of Druaga and Desert Punk sets = $41.70
From the Light: Raising an Autistic Child complete manga series = $71.68
Tale of Princess Kaguya = $24.58
Pandora Hearts (both sets) = $72.48

February Total: $210.44
YTD Total: $482.49
Total Around This Time Last Year: $542.30

Not bad in spite of getting a couple extra more things than I wanted. Plan to snag a couple more low-cost titles next month (more SAVE titles likely) and may possibly get my April Sentai pre-orders early from Rightstuf since they often send stuff out weeks before their official release date. Otherwise, still holding off on pricey stuff until I'm employed again.
