It's perfectly normal to embed videos using youtube-nocookie.com, it's an embedding method with enhanced privacy, made to be compliant with various privacy laws. In the EU, among others.

It appears there are two bugs here, both in the the Youtube flash player and both triggered when accessing it via youtube-nocookie. That's why Chrome users are not affected; they get the html5 player by default. And for Firefox even if you set your preference to the html5 player on youtube.com, it has no effect on youtube-nocookie.com (and that's the point, really).

The first bug is that these videos give "An error occured" when you try to play the video. I tried switching to a youtube.com embed and there's no such error, even with the Flash player.

The second bug is that the "watch on youtube" link leads to youtube-nocookie.com instead of youtube.com, and since there's no "watch" page on that domain you get a 404.

Since both of these errors are on Youtube's domain there's nothing I can do about them. Given that it's been at least 5 days and they still haven't fixed the bug, there's no telling when or even if they will fix it. So in the meantime I'm going to automatically convert our articles to use the privacy-impaired version of the embed.

@ Dan42

Thanks for the diagnosis and switching it back. Several others in news articles have experienced the same so I'm sure they appreciate it too. Just curious, have you found any Google discussion threads / reports about this?

Regarding privacy, from what I understand, the only enhancement the -nocookie embeds do is to avoid dropping a cookie before being played. But it still uses cookies when playing the embedded video or opening in youtube.

I am running Firefox 37.0 beta on Windows7 sp1 64 bit.

I'm running Firefox 36.0.1. So maybe the beta and upcoming Firefox will default to HTML5 and sidestep the issue on Windows at least.
