Yes, there is -- I don't think anything comes out DVD-only in Japan anymore outside of the very kiddy/family-type series.

Any idea if the Japanese BD will have subs on it? I've done my part, I told EJ Rivera at Sakura-Con that under no circumstances would I buy a DVD set, but if it came out on BD that I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. The feeling I got from my conversation with him was that I'd never see Zvezda on my shelves. If Japanese BD has subs, then I'd go with that.

certainly no expert here and definitely not in the business, but I do tend to use Amzn JP for sampling music OSTs/the occasional subtitled blu or raw dvd and or artbook as well as simply checking to see what's coming into R1.
There are JP DVD releases numbered in the thousands for current anime titles that are still available/being released.
For DVD only type there are 10,536 choices for stuff from the 2010's (as of this post). Just for the titles coming within 90 Days there are 869.

here we are 2015 and it's still numero uno. Why is that?
just more of the things we already know---> when it has been done right, as in authored beautifully it's still the best deal around. The pic quality is good enough and the price is more affordable than the newer blu format. well that and not everyone has the same "needs" when it comes to their viewing experience.

RE: the Zevzda dvd release
As I've already cried about previously, streaming really isn't my best bet but I did want to watch this show so I bought it. My choices were what? 300 plus USD for a raw blu set OR: whatever America's most beloved anime seller that is Aniplex is charging for the R1 dvd set. Great, just great.
Zevzda R1 dvd looks fine though. So far I haven't noticed anything visually that would take away from my enjoyment of it. It's not as if it's "Knights of Sidonia" with all kinds of architectural detail to go gah gah over in the higher resolution.
Would I have preferred a blu set for Zevzda? Sure, mostly for the better sound quality that it offers when played through my system. That's just me though.
