With all of the negative press that Death Note seems to get from schools it's nice to see it actually get recognized for its literary merits.

Well, they never actually show any violent scenes in the book. And the book itself does have a good moral (they never said what Light is doing is right, especially the ending of the story) |

Good news. Nice to hear "Death Note has some literary value" before "Death Note inspired crazy people to kill!" in the United States.
Hope it wins~ And then maybe someday, manga with some ounce of literary value might actually be taught in the classroom! (Maybe...?) |

I'm highly surprised by this.
...Considering the fact that most parents disapprove manga for content that assumes are brainwashing their kids...
*thinks of the horrible Peach Girl manga incident*
....Change is good at least. I thought Death Note was rated older teen, but I suppose I'll check it again. >.>; |

Tell that to the schools that have been banning it and the negative press that follows.

I've already had to read a graphic novel for Lit (an excerpt on it, anyway). It wasn't manga, though, I think it was American. |

they may only go as far as shootings and referring to suicides and murder but even by the u.s standards this is not grade 7 material although the nomination is only for the 1st vol which doesnt have all the craziness yet. gl for DN but i will assume that very few volumes will get to the nomination stage. |

| the vol covered alot. it maybe has a chance because kids are voting. Manga is easier to read than an entire book. |

Really?! That's excellent! I've never had anything like that... Was is Spiegelman's Maus?

Nah, that's just China being China again. At any rate, while I certainly don't approve of the bannings, I mean, come on, isn't school supposed to be for learning algebra and not for reading manga (unless it's a school assignment) and bringing in toys?[/quote] |

To be honest, I can't remember. That class was about a year ago, and um...I kinda procrastinated and didn't really read it, if I remember right. ^^;; I believe it was protesting the current War on Terror? Or, at the very least, had something to do with the middle east and war. |

Teachers actually encouraging students to read manga. Sounds like a nice change from the ordinary. |

| Death Note has been put on a couple of Teen recommended reading lists at the library I work at since it has been published, so this doesn't surprise me so much. Death Note has been a librarian darling in many, many different libraries across the nation. I think it has been recommended by the ALA too but I'd have to double check. |
