While I can see the reasoning behind this and agree that while you are in uniform of anything not just school your conduct should reflect whats expected of you, but it's still ridiculous to me for them to practically ban the students from getting jobs since having a job also teaches them about added responsibility, how to conduct yourself in the workforce, and interact normally with people older then you since you are really only around people your age when in school.

Yeah, I knew about the job thing but when I was in Japan and it was a Sunday and I was surprised to see how many kids were in their school uniform. I asked my friend about it (who is in JET) and they said many schools make their kids wear the uniform even in their time off so if they do anything that would get them in trouble the school would know about it. And I guess likely get them not do anything that would get them in trouble in the first place.

Different culture and traditions. Sure the Japanese look at the American school system and think about all the choice words they could say about it too.

You do see kids in uniforms here outside of school hours, Osceola County requires them, but not on weekends. I can't imagine American teachers taking that level of responsibility for their students though I know that some do take more responsibility than what you might think.

We had a similar policy in law school where you weren't allowed to have a job during your first year. The thinking was that since your grades depending entirely on the final exam, they wanted you to focus on studying instead of blaming a job for why you crammed at the last minute.

I'd say that school clubs, committees, classroom and cleaning duty, etc... fill the "teach added responsibility" niche in Japan. In the same way in Japan there's already a much stronger culture of "respect those older than you" than in the West as well as the senpai/kōhai system. So, it seems to me that those things are already covered. |

Now we know the school's reasoning, very silly if you ask me, but now the question is what does the general public think? I find it hard to believe that a few student misconducts is enough to label an entire institute.

I see kids with jobs. It's usually in shows that are trying to be kinda sorta a little serious or at least are taking place in something resembling Earth as we know it. Like a lot of harem rom coms that I've seen usually have somebody with an after school job.

You would be amazed how parents are quick to label a school. It only takes one or two particularly troublesome students, and it turns into "I would never send my kid there". And this is in western society, I can see it being far worse in Japan with the culture they have. It isn't what the general public think, it is about what the parents think. And if you are ever involved in school life anywhere, you will find that some parents can be very quick to judge. |

Not sure if this holds true when Western teachers are reputed as being very hands-on and engaging to their students after class. |

What anime was the person not watching? Several anime have high school students in jobs (High School Star Musical, Cardfight!! Vanguard, Kiss Him Not Me, The Devil Is a Part Timer )
