What a shame. Great studio wasting talent on this instead of something new.

Yes, wasting talent on a franchise that makes money for them to this day. What a shame.

Yay!!! Adult age Asahi and Ikuya look so cool!
Another recap film before the new film? Well it has been almost four years since season 1 but I'm glad we'll see Haruka attend college level swimming competitions.
Looking forward to this and Violet Evergarden from KyoAni.

The goals of the recap films are different: the first one emphasizes the bonds between the Iwatobi members, focusing on Haruka, while the second one emphasizes the promise between Rin and Sousuke to swim together in a medley relay. The new film takes place right before Haruka's, Makoto's, Rin's, and Sousuke's graduation and is composed of four new stories tied together, so sadly you won't see Haruka in college.
Also agreed on how older Asahi and Ikuya look!

There is little to no need of comments like this. Free! has been the most successful franchise for Animation Do and likely one of, if not the, best franchises for Kyoto Animation financially. They are not beholden to your whims for what to make; their producers make what they feel would both be profitable and enjoyable to work on/fans to view. There's still enough encouragement from Free! fans (as seen by the support for the birthday goods) to make more and a film is the most profitable/easiest way to fulfill their desires.

Box office receipts for the previous recap films:
Love, Chunibyo, & Other Delusions - Rikka Ver - : 220 million yen
Beyond the Boundary: Past Arc: 140 million yen
Sound! Euphonium ~Welcome to the Kitauji High Concert Band~: 230 million yen
Box office receipts for the previous newly animated films:
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya: 850 million yen (Kadokawa-led committee)
K-On! The Movie: 1.9 billion yen (TBS-led committee)
Tamako Love Story: 205 million yen
Beyond the Boundary: Future Arc: 203 million yen
High Speed!: 690 million yen
A Silent Voice 2.3 billion yen
As you can see, the recaps are often just as profitable as newer films for less popular franchises. Boundary's recap came about late in production, so it's in a weird spot. I've little doubt that these two Free! recaps could earn over 200 million yen each with few additional scenes animated, so they're definitely profitable in contrast to something like Tamako/Boundary. That doesn't include other revenue sources like video disc sales, music sales, international right sales, and merchandise.
Eupho and Free! are popular franchises, thus recap films make sense monetarily.

I was kinda hoping that KyoAni would milk the franchise annually until 2020, finishing it off at the Tokyo Olympics. I'm excited to see the movies and hope that more come afterwards.

I think compilation films are actually really good for anime. It helps introduce people to the anime without them having to sit infront of the tv for hours on end to finish the series, it's just takes out all the necessary parts, emphasizes the scenes that are important and adds some new material! So, I wouldn't say that they are a "waste of time". Also. Glad for more Free! It's been so long since the last season.

I'm just happy to hear that they're finally getting off the block and putting out the BD for the first season. Can't believe it's taken them nearly 4 years.
