Japan can't really be having problems with getting the US to license an Evangelion movie, can they?

They will have problems if they get greedy.

Also, I don't think it's the entire country of Japan selling the US film rights. Interesting that it shows Nippon Television as the group showing it here. I wonder what company is controlling the rights. Who are the deal makers? What control does studio Gainax have?

I guess we'll find out eventually.

So does that mean that Geneon no longer has the rights to Barefoot Gen?

Hard to believe that Eva would need to be promoted.

Back up. Some of those--specifically, Akihabara@DEEP, Sukeban Deka, and Death Note--have already been licensed, and in Sukeban Deka's case, released.

Well, it couldn't hurt for them to draw in more potential bidders (perhaps even investors that have more money to spare than typical anime distributors), if that's the intention.

I just emailed a few of my close associates that live down in Southern California and asked if they're going. They hold jobs in the film industry (a few have done work for me).

Hopefully they'll pitch a screening to Eva and tell me how it is.

In some cases, American distribution rights have been licensed already, but not distribution to other specific countries. In other cases, theatrical distribution has been arranged but not home video or net distribution, or vice versa. In still other cases, the producers screen the movies to entice investors for future projects they can't show yet.

Just because one film has been distributed for one venue type in a particular country doesn't mean that all distributions rights have been signed, or for that matter, all distribution rights for films from the same producers that haven't been made at all yet.

Yes, but that doesn't mean it won't speed up the process. We all know that people from ADV and/or Manga Entertainment are going to be there. For instance, our film composer, Carl Johnson, is going to be there, too. I don't think he's heard of Eva, but I'm urging him to go see the new movie and keep his eyes pealed on buyers.

Remember, this is the first time Evangelion has made it to the AFM...

Ooooo Eva showed on Friday! I wonder if we'll be hearing any news on it soon?

It will also show again on Monday, at 1:00PM.

Why is Barefoot Gen on the list? Surely it's been licensed for a long, long time? It's certainly still available on DVD here in Britain.

Or is this a remake they're talking about?

Moomintroll: Gen's license probably expired with the Geneon bail-out.

Yea. Saying that Japan sells rights to Evangelion is like saying the US sells rights to Star Wars. Laughing

Anyways, if anyone were to market something to the Hollywood scene, it might as well be Evangelion.

Ah, I see. I wouldn't have thought it would be a major licensing priority quarter of a century after it was first released but I suppose it is a classic.

In Britain a company specialising in world cinema, Optimum Releasing, has the license for Barefoot Gen 1 & 2 (along with the Ghibli catalogue and a few other theatrical anime titles) so if anyone in North America is looking for it and can play R2 discs it's still easy enough to get hold of.
