Season 1 - Restaurant to Another World (TV)
Season 2 - Restaurant to Another World (TV 2)

Genres: fantasy, slice of life
Themes: cooking, food, isekai, other world, restaurant

Plot Summary: A restaurant called "Yōshoku no Nekoya" (Western Cuisine Cat Restaurant), which is located on the first basement floor of a building at a corner of a shopping district near an office area. While it normally feeds salarymen, there is a secret in Nekoya. Every Saturday when the shop takes a day off, Nekoya is teeming full of "special customers." For the office workers, it is a familiar place with familiar dishes, but for these Saturday customers — "people from that world" — it is nothing but cuisine never seen or heard before.

S1 - (Crunchyroll)
S2 - Oct. 1, 2021 (Fridays; Crunchyroll)

Episode 1:

Well this was fairly interesting for a fantasy show.

Pretty animation too for a series with such a simple premise. Aletta is adorale and I like her already. The world setting also sparks my interest and the mood of the story feels very atmospheric.

Personally, I think this show has potential. They even captured my attention with the theme songs and music so far.

It has my attention too with some potential, but I am also a little worried that some of its pieces could be a bit too heavy, like bothering with the regular world connection. I am thinking way too much about things like where the gas and power comes from when he is in a different world, that if it is just the doorway that acts like a portal, then is it perfectly soundproof? What about ingredients, health inspectors, converting money, paying taxes, keeping people from really using violence (threatening not to cook is not enough), steady business plans, and I guess random people just walking in at the middle of the night.

Part of me wonders if it would be better if it did not have this fairly solid connection to the mundane world, and instead was more on the fantasy with the restaurant that travels, but say the menu was still things from Earth. Kind of feels surreal that what looks like a regular mundane chef has the power to go between worlds. And if I understand, it is a different world each day a week or something. I want to feel invested in a fantasy setting, but I fear it is going to give 6 different ones plus regular Earth, and maybe some trouble with each being a bit bare bones. The description the girl gave of how demons are treated where she is and what her situation is, was kind of clunky.

Oooo, I think I'll be eating here again. A food show in a half-reality/half-fantasy setting. That's cool. Dragon Lady has a slammin' bod to go with her palate.

Of the two yokai shows released yesterday, I enjoyed this one more than Yokai Apartments. I've come to admire Suwabe Junichi's performances, particularly Tetsuo in Demi-chan. He has a strong calm voice that fits well with his character in this story. Aletta is a bit generic, but dragon lady was interesting. That scene at the end wasn't what I expected from her at all.

I watched the first episode and it seems like a fun, light-hearted show. I'll watch this.

Alright, so the first episode I will honestly say I found somewhat terrible. But, after watching episode 2, I think I'm getting the sense of what kind of series this is, and it's pretty fine by me. I wouldn't mind watching a few more of these vignettes. Nice, pleasant little watch.

hmmm, seems like an interesting anime then considering the plot summary that you have provided. I wonder what's the biggest secret in this anime series.

Not a big fan of food porn shows, which is basically what the first couple of episodes seem to be. There's only so much ooohing and aaahing over various dishes I can take before I want something with an actual plot. The animation is nice, though.

Episodes 2 and 3 have been a bit weak in my opinion. They have just been like 2 ministories each that mostly lead to the same "The food here is so yummy!" thing. I wish we'd get a bit more focus on the chef and his new employee.

Episode 7

I have kind of gone down on the series that it feels like it has mostly become a food porn show. But I will have to admit that both curry and a black dragon does get my attention, I happen to like to order curry from a Japanese restaurant that is nearby when I have the chance. And I have a soft spot for things that nature might say evil as in dark, but not actually evil.

Episode 12 (finale)

Well we did I think find out some of the secret of the restaurant, which could be considered some closure for this series. This was otherwise a series with not much of a plot arc.

For the series as a whole, I am not entirely sure what I should say. I might just start off that I am somewhat disappointed, but some episodes did appeal, which probably came down to the level of just talking about food to world building of the fantasy world. Sure I like food, but that in and of itself is not enough to really have me entertained, so whatever the fantasy people ate tended to have me more interested. How the fantasy people made do with what they could in their world, some economic matters, or maybe a couple interesting curious sirens. I guess I am somewhat interested in some food shown, but how good of a mouthpiece are people with medieval level cooking?

I was interested in stories like with Aletta trying to make it in her world, including when she got a job under one of the patrons. It just kind split its focus on having characters break down how awesome food was in very descriptive words. The last episode maybe also did a good job at bringing together all of the mini stories we had through the show which felt like they were conduits to talk about food. I am writing this while a little hungry, and I am not sure if that is a good point or not, whether best watched after eating, or right before.

I will rate this show as So-so (5/10), nothing really wrong, but the food element just did not grab my attention that much. I still think it might be worth watching, just not really a big deal that one might kind of think.

I feel like this show rather should have been more about the people who work in that restaurant than about the customers. I would have been more interested in learning why demon folk are oppressed, what daily life is like for Aletta, teaching Aletta and Kuro about our world, teaching Kuro how to serve etc etc. Just more time should have been spent developing Aletta, Kuro and the chef. Instead most of the time was spent looking at the various customers who happen to visit the restaurant. Rated it so-so.
