From what I've heard, local residents near the shrine love and hate those Lucky Star fans: like all tourist groups, they bring money and noise at the same time, not to mention those overwhelming ema featuring the four main characters (happened to Kamichu! as well).

The shrine officials and local citizens' initial reactions to the fan influx ranged from indifferent tolerance to vocal opposition, but many eventually embraced the increased tourism that resulted.

Ahh tourism money ... is there any purer form of a love-hate relationship?

Sometimes you just have to take it. Thanks to one series your business has starting flourishing like you never thought it would. I would love to see how that event turns out.

Gahahah those poor towns people never knew what hit them. Admittedly I feel sorry for them, but hey at least it's commerce. At least with this money, they can prepare for the next onslaught, to come sometime after the Lucky Star sequel. (Assuming of course that there is one? I would think so.)

Actually fans started flocking the shrine starting about June/July when NewType Japan published an article on "Lucky Star Pilgrimages" showing where are the various places that were featured on the show.

The townsfolk have no idea what was going on at first and were quite startled when:
1) Lots of strangers in glasses, in big backpacks, carrying around big cameras, started walking around the town.
2) The local shrine got a sudden influx of Ema with anime girls drawn on them, proclaiming "Konata is my wife!" "Kagamin is my wife!"

From what I read on the "town blog" - they were not very pleased and warned citizens to be on the lookout for criminal activities and keep a close eye on the children.

And then 3~4 months later, looks like they realized the commercial potential so the shrine actually got local woodcraft experts to start mass producing official Lucky Star ema themselves. Sometimes the profit is too lucrative and too appealing - especially when it comes to Otaku related products....Otaku are known (like me Very Happy) are known to be merciless when it comes to spending on things they love.

She's off trying to pursue her musical career Rolling Eyes

Like so many others... except in her case I think her VA talent sets her much further apart from the rest than her singing. "God Knows" was a one-hit wonder, honestly.
