Kumamoto Prefecture suffered a damaging earthquake last year that even affected its iconic Kumamoto Castle.

"Affected" is an understatement. Having visited it both before and after the earthquake, I can tell you it's absolutely devastated.

According to this report and many others like it, as of April 2017, the keep alone was still two years away from repairs being completed and the rest of the ground (the walls,of which 10% have collapsed and another 30% are damaged) will take at least 20 years to repair. I'm glad I got to see it when I did back in 2014. While it's not the original keep, it's still a sight to behold from the outside, and there was a lot of fascinating stuff in the museum inside the keep.
